Hi, i am wondering about changing to a stock rom on my brothers HTC desire.
I do not need root or custom rom on this phone right now, but maybe in the future.
It is an ICS custom rom on it today and HBOOT 0.93. With root and maybe S-OFF.
I am a little afriad to utdate/downgrade to stock rom because i have read several places that if the HBOOT updates to newer than 0.93 i will not be able to root the phone later.
But i read this was via OTA, I will be using HTC Sync for the update.
This will be my phone number 2 and i just want everything to work, newer rom functions is not that important.
I hope anyone will give me some help, becase this phone is WAY more difficult to root and customize than my SGS.
Thanks i advance

Don't worry, every hboot can be hacked. Only 1.03 is a little dodgy, but running an official update will give you at most 1.02 hboot that's easy to handle with revolutionary.

Thats nice to hear
I wonder if i perhaps should go for the pre rooted stock rom from this forum instead.
It should work just as nice as the stock HTC sync rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
Also i am a little unsure about how important radio is.
I have a different radio on it today than the rom required.
A have read the noob proof guide but i didnt undersdtand how to flash the radio, can it be done in clockworkmod recovery?
On om my SGS all this can be done in either odin or clockworkmod, so i wonder if this can be done in CWM for the desire too, because it is already rooted and HBOOT'ed?
Many thanks.
radio can be flashed through CWM recovery but only v2.5.0.7 or older. best to flash it via fastboot commands. click adb & fastboot in my sig for a guide
heres a link for

HEEELP!
I may have a big problem.
I found out that the phone was S-ON and followed the Noob proof guide using alpharev to S-OFF it.
The 2 first steps went fine but step number 3 will not start
On the computer i just says, "waiting for flashing to complete".
But it never starts on the phone.
It also say on the computer that if i turn of the phone now it will be bricked, i dont wanna brick it.
What should i do????!?
****. I waited for an hour like the noob proof guide said i should and the i pulled the plug.
But now my phone will not boot into android. Just goes straight to fastboot mode.
What are my choices now?
Run 2.3 ruu and then all from start.

2.3 RUU via HTC sync or via fastboot? Or via the lin from your signature?
Sorry for being noobish, i just havent gotten the hang of this HTC way of doing it yet
In my signature is only a way how to obtain it. When you download it, it's .exe file packed in zip archive. Unpack it and run from yout PC. Make sure you have HTC sync installed on your PC prior running ruu.

Thanks I managed to install the 2.3 RUU.
I think i will just keep it stock this way for a while until my brother wants it back.
It is nice to have a phone that just works without beeing tweaked

I have searched enough and only method comes up to check hboot is apparently holding down volume down button and switching HDH on.
I've tried it on my orange branded desire HD but it just shown a flashy wall paper and then orange logo appears.
My software version is 1.40.61.2 and all I want to do it get rid of orange crap from it and use a generic htc software.
Could someone please help me in simple words?
How to check HBoot and what should I do to install generic software?
Thanks a lot in advance.

The reason why you didn't get to bootloader menu was because fastboot was enabled. Next time, take out your battery, replace it, then try and go into bootloader. It should work.
To flash a generic HTC ROM you will need to get root, Radio S-OFF and of course the actual Generic HTC ROM file.
Follow the instructions from this thread to Root + Radio S-OFF your device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
Once complete, and you have S-OFF enabled in bootloader you can proceed to flash the generic HTC ROM. The link below contains the HTC WWE 1.32.405.6 RUU:
http://www.xdafil.es/DesireHD/RUU/R....140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed.exe
Once you flash the above HTC RUU, you will lose root but you will still have Radio S-OFF which means you can still flash any ROM you like.
You can also flash a custom ROM instead of the generic HTC RUU after you have Radio S-OFF

Got it sorted with S-OFF thingie.......thanks for helping me.
Just a few more questions as you seem like quite knowledgeable.
1) I am downloading generic file, would that complete wipe my phone and settings?
2) Would I be able to upgrade OTA if a future release comes from HTC?
3) Loosing root means I wont be able to use those applications which require root access....even with VISIONary?
4) How do I flash the rom? Do I need a goldcard for that? As mine is a branded orange handset.
Thanks a lot.

1) Yes, it is a generic HTC unbranded ROM. It will wipe your settings, as will any ROM you flash.
2) I think so, as long as you stick with the official generic HTC roms. If not, you can download the OTA update from here and apply it manually via ClockworkMod Recovery, which is safer as it will stop it overwriting the HBOOT and Custom Recovery (which is what the last update did)
3) Losing root access means you can't use applications that require root access. However, Visonary is used to get root from being in a state of no-root. Once you run Visonary, it will do its exploit and make the system root for you. This doesn't work on 1.72/1.75 ROMs, however the ROM link I have given you is a rootable ROM.
4) With S-OFF, you do not need a Goldcard. For the Official ROMs (like the link I gave you) follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890
For custom ROMs, you will need to install ClockworkMod recovery and from there flash the ROMs. To get ClockworkMod recovery, first make sure your current ROM is rooted, then download 'ROM Manager' from the Android Market, then run the application and tap 'Flash ClockworkMod recovery'. To boot into clockworkmod recovery, take out the battery, replace it, go into bootloader, then choose 'Recovery'.
Also thought you would like to know how to get back to stock Orange UK ROM for warranty reasons.
1) Do Radio S-ON and restore your CID (using the same tool you used to get Radio S-OFF)
2) Download this Orange UK 1.40.61.2 ROM: http://www.xdafil.es/DesireHD/RUU/R....140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_157531_signed.exe
3) Install that ROM using the method described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890

Hey, no problem
If you have Radio S-OFF, it will stay Radio S-OFF unless you manually turn it to Radio S-ON using the program.
Flashing anything will not affect it. So you are good to flash the HTC ROM
Just to let other guys know.....I have followed the steps as prank1 has suggested and now I have a stock HTC rom without any of the orange crap on it. All orange logos, icons and softwares have disappeared.
I have unlocked phone with S-OFF and I am sure now I can flash with custom roms as well which would be my next try.
Thanks once again.

when the phone rebooted and was installed the update it stopped and now all i have is an image of the phone on the screen with a red triangle. it's been 10 minutes and it's not doing nething.
what have i done... and how do i undo it
PLEASE HELP
I did exactly the same thing and now it wont update, I reported it to HTC but theyve advised me that its 'with the developer' which to be honest suggests that I will never get a reply beyond the ticket number they gave me. Cant believe moving bloody Uno of my phone would cause such a hassle

Hi Fellow xda.
I have flashed the official Gingerbread ota update ruu to my desire.
After that i realized that i couldnt root or go back to Oxygen rom, now that the hboot version is 1.02
Before i had hboot version 0.93 i think.
I have tried the downgrade to 2.1
and root again with unrevoked.
None of these 2 methods work.
Is there any other way to go back to rooted and custom recovery to oxygen rom or hboot 0.93?.
With oxygen and launcherpro my desire feels faster than stock sense
Anyone else have this problem?
There is currently no method of downgrading the hboot or rooting the official GB RUU.
I guess all you can do is wait until somebody figures a way to root and install custom recovery

Same situation, precipitaded mself, now can't root and all my backups are Titanium backups, have nandroid backups but can't use them....

isn't it possible to downgrade hboot?
I am also facing this problem. Is there any solution available now?

No solution - check Alpharev/Unrevoked updates - if there will be a solution, it will probably be in the developement section.
Someone said that they used a Froyo RUU to downgrade then they just rooted. But it didn't work for other people but I think its with a shot. Otherwise you'll have to wait.
Swyped...
Hmmmm...I did not know about this...
I did not flash the RUU directly but tried to flash the rooted or modified ones from this forum...and decided to keep InsertCoin 1.0.9
How did the devs root it then? Perhaps, try asking Baadnewz and/or NeoPhyTe for help, since they have released the rooted official update.
I don't think they rooted it as such, but more of "ported" it. I don't know a thing about rom development but go and ask him.

The difference is that when u run the ruu, it will overwrite ur hboot, ur recovery, ur rom, ecc, everything...So u lost root, because the ruu restore everything as stock.
In particular after run the ruu, the new hboot installed doesn't allow to root again and doesn't allow to change hboot at the moment.
Instead, when u flash the rooted rom based on official gb (u already have root and u don't lost it, simply), the zip contain only the rom part and with inside the super user apk (that allow root permission), so flashing it u will continue to have ur recovery, ur hboot, ur root permissions.
Instead when running the ruu, so u lost root, there is no way to install again a custom recovery and there is no way to push the super user apk into the rom (unrevoked / alpharev doesn't work)..At the moment.
From devs side, create a rooted rom is easy, as they extract from the ruu only the rom and make it rooted pushing in the zip that they are going to create the super user apk and some other tweaks to the kernel as well...All this can be done with the dsixda kitchen
I hope everything is clear now

Okay well then i guess im stuck like others :S
i was just thinking if there was a way to get superuser rights by using the terminal or adb.
i did also try the old root method for the desire that came before unrevoked. That didnt work.
Thank goodness...I was tempted to flash the original RUU...but my stomach told me not to do it...I would have been in the same situation if had flashed it too...
I hope there will be an easy solution in the near future for you guys

Have the same problem as others here. Tried both apk and adb with GingerBreak. No luck
...but I'm trying to play around a bit and got a noob idea to use ARUWizard to flash custom rom. I've extracted RUU 2.29 and RUU 2.3.3 and replaced 2.3.3 rom.zip with the one from 2.29. It didn't work of course as newer version has been discovered but I was wondering if it's possible just to root the standard rom.zip and put it back. Is there any chance that it works?

Essentially, all you can do is fastboot flash hboot downgrade.img then RUU again.

Hey Guys,
Longtime no see.
Last Android I ran was a nook color that I flashed with gingerbread and that was a whole other kettle of fish.
I was donated a HTC Desire GSM and couldn't help myself and rooted it with unrevoked.
Then I updated the rom to Nikez Lentes ICS rom and I am very happy with it.
Now, I installed CWM and when it flashes it says that it is V5.0.2 but when I boot into recovery it is actually V2.5.0.
After a bit of reading I see that the author of the ROM and others and now using 4EXT Recovery so I bought that and went to give it a go but the S-ON is stopping it ( I booted into recovery and indeed it is S-ON currently ).
So reading up on how to turn ON to OFF I see unrevoked and alpharev have a solution for windows and linux only. ( I have VM windows and a raspberry pi linux ( but i assume the pi would be too underpowered to do this update))
I have read the wiki and read on the FAQ on this site that if you are not running the stock HTC rom that there could be an issue, is that correct ?
After all this, I am really just trying to make a Ext-SD partition on my SD card, cause the rom is like 120mb of the 140mb internal partition and I can't install enough apps to be happy.. lol.
I have the CWR image of V5.0.2 but am not sure really how to update it ( V2.5 is green text and V5.0 is blue so im sure I have the older version )
Or im happy to use 4EXT for my rom needs, but I need to change my S-ON to OFF to be able to flash the recovery and partition it that way.
If anyone can help that would be great, the whole setup has been rather painless and i'd like to keep it that way, I need the phone to work, but I would like to install more apps on the phone. The ROM also has a script built in so that is not the problem, just making a partition on the SD card really is what I need right now.
Thanks,
Steve
would it be because im currently S-OFF that I can't flash recovery above V2.5.0 or install 4EXT Recovery ?
Are you SON or SOFF ? Write down what your bootloader says.
1. Alpharev quote
Requirements:
The only requirement right now is that the ROM you're running is rooted.
As techniques such as 'data2ext' have been popping up, these might disturb our finely-tuned flashing process.
Please revert to a rooted stock ROM if possible. Your /data partition is used for temporary storage of important files.

I dont know whether it will work with ICS though. I wouldnt try it since this is a bootloader mod. Maybe best to go stock rooted rom before running alpharev.
Revolutionary is the other option for getting soff.
I am S-ON,
I ran unrevoked to root my phone, I want to make it S-OFF now.
I am asking how I can do it with my ICS rom and I don't want any issues, but I want to be able to make a SD-EXT partition to run apps2sd.

Read my post. Best to go to a stock rooted rom before running alpharev. Thereafter flash 4ext. Partition your sdcard with 4ext. Flash rom of your choice.
Can I ask why it is better to go to a stock rooted rom ?
Installing the stock rom, and stock radio, to then run alpharev, to then root, to then install 4ext, sounds like a lot of work just to unlock the S-ON.
That is alpharev requirement. Read my first post.
Link for rooted stock romlink
Where does it say you need to run a stock rooted rom ?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
the stock rooted rom that is U (updated) seems to be pulled and this guy has a URL at the top saying he has pulled the rom due to internal XDA fights.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151765
My suggestion is to run 2.3 ruu from htc dev and then use revolutionary, two flies in one hit, s-off and custom recovery, and then flashing su over recovery. Though you'll get cwm recovery after first boot you'll be able to flash 4ext.

Thanks for that nloooo,
I downloaded, unrar'd and unzipped the folder and can see the 2.3 RUU exe there, so I just run that in a windows machine ?
then rev, then reflash you are suggesting ?
is it worth trying revolutionary without returning to stock RUU and if it doesn't work, then installing the 2.3 RUU ?
It alk depends on hboit version your phone has. If it is 0.93 or 1.02 than it should work no matter which rom you have. I'm suggesting 2.3 ruu cause you'll get 1.02 hboot and you're good to go.
Sent from my GT-P3100 using Flashes and Thunders
My hboot is 0.93.
If 0.93 + revolutionary could work, I would prefer to do it that way because I am very green playing with android (mostly just use non-jailbroken apple gear) But I am loving the desire + ICS.
Thank you handy and nlooo for replying.

Hi guys, new to XDA-DEVELOPERS, really sorry but just like a real NOOOB! i tried to S-OFF on my htc desire with AlphaRev live cd.
Everything went well until step 3, live cd says "WAITING FOR FLASH TO COMPLETE" for nearly 2 hours.
So out of frustration i pulled the usb lead, oooOOPPPS!
Now it boots up into bootloader only and nothing more, every time i power up into the android bootloader again and again!!!
I have tried a factory reset with the bootloader which works fine but when it powers up again it goes back into the bootloader
I have since tried REVOLUTIONARY.EXE , when i connect the device to the computer the program does not recognize the device so that i can get the serial number for the beta key
I would really like someone to help out here, the phone was excellent when it was working it had the ANDROID 2.3.3 INSTALLED with GINGER VILLAIN.
All this stupidity cos i wanted the S-OFF on the device, ( sorry guys, just furious at myself)
In future i will always remember the old motto "IF ITS NOT BROKEN, DON'T TRY AND FIX IT!)
So please, all possible solutions and comments welcome even if it's slagging me off.

Thanks you, as I have said firstly, i am new to all this, secondly the htc desire device is in loop mode and starts up into bootloader splash screen, the phone doesn't boot up.
Please correct me, i think my selection would be guide 2 "S-ON" can't boot recovery/phone won't boot up- and to follow these instructions, but
you have said that i need to make a GOLDCARD but if the phone doesn't boot up then how would i make a goldcard?
I have downloaded the RUU, and because i am newbie with all this, anyway you can explain the full procedure in detail?
Really sorry to be noob!
Thanks
Put sdcard into another phone or use the 2.3 gb upgrade from HTCDev because u wont need a goldcard for that. U can get the 2.3gb upgrade in bortaks guide also, go down to resources.
To run the ruu, simply plug in ur phone to computer while in bootloader and run the ruu (double click it) make sure u have the drivers installed on ur computer for ur phone. All available in bortaks guide like stankyou said answer is there.

By the way are there any better RUU's that can give me more internal storage, as it is with android 2.3.3 i'v only got 156mb left on my htc Desire Bravo, but are easy to install, or should i just leave alone?
Thank again
Nope. Thats the problem with htc desire, low space. If u were to go s-off (security off) then u would be able to change hboots which will give u more space and u can flash custom roms. Check the Desire all things root guide in my sig. Loads of info there plus if u decide to go s-off then u can use "revolutionary". There a guide on how to use it in that Desire all things root guide.
So the first thing really is basically read guides so u have an idea of what ur doing. S-off & root using revolutionary is very easy and straight forward. Read the guide

Hi JM, i can't get into the bootloader with which i was stuck on before, i have tried holding volume down, power down when i release the power key it starts up as normal.
I wanted to know if the bootloader is S-ON or S-OFF

Hi Andy, first of all thanks for all the info and guides.
I have done nothing but read up on the whole process of S-OFF>>>ROOTING>>>FLASHRECOVERY etc.
I have taken the big jump and now i have S-OFF with Revolutionary and the this is the HBOOT-6.93.1002
I have downloade the flash recovery img (AMON-RA) and UNREVOKED
Followed the instructions and selected the custom image file (amon-ra), Unrevoked goes through the paces and stops with a message "waiting for root" (safe to start if this doesn't happen) then the phone just restarts as normal.
I checked apps folder there is a superuser icon, but when i boot into bootloader and select recovery, the phone shows black screen with a green circle (arrows in opposite) very briefly then a black screen with a red triangle over the phone.
I have retried the process but no luck, i don't know what i am missing, guidance would be appreciated!
Thanks MAT
when u run revolutionary u should just select yes to install clockworkmod recovery. re run the revolutionary program and select yes to install cwm recovery.

Sorry Andy, i read elseware to say NO to the install
I now have the Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4 installed and at this stage i have backed up my system in case!
Would the next step be to ROOT the device or am i barking up the wrong tree
Thanks MAT
nope. ul need root, its simple. in that guide theres a superuser.zip file. download it and then boot in to recovery and choose install from sdcard and flash the .zip file and ul be rooted.

Hi, JM, just to let you know i successfully installed a custom rom (mildwild) working ok!
Is it as easy to install the roms with 4ext or are there some which will need other additions e.g; HBOOTS, KERNELS etc?
Thanks MAT
