I seem to have exhausted all my self help efforts so I'll turn to the general populace for input.
My Galaxy Nexus GSM is running the deodexed Google ROM 4.1.1. Its unlocked and rooted (of course). I have been finding lately that the device is becoming slow at times, and even occasionally locks. I have had a variety of applications on it to 'optimize' but I have found that really does not do too much but add more clutter and 'crap-ware' to the device.
What I want to know are some examples of ROM+Utilities that people use to keep the device running fast and error free. I'll load a different ROM and utility 'recipe' to smooth this thing out.
Any examples/ideas from the tinkering experts out there?
I usually boot into recovery and clean cache and dalvik about once a week. It helps a lot.
If you want to expand on that, do a scheduled daily TB around 5 or 6am each day and a monthly factory reset with restore from one of those dailies.
Android seems to have a tendency to get slower over time, depending how much apps you have installed (I have about 260) and this procedure mitigates on those issues.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Well what kind of "optimizing" apps did you use? I hope it's not task killer
Monthly factory reset? I'm gonna say that's really excessive.....I don't do any of those and I never have android getting slower over time.....you'll get the same effect by rebooting the phone.....

a reboot at least once a week is good...
also, clean the cache every once in a while...
i reboot every other day.
and also clean cache and dalvik cache every other week.
Use app called System Tuner, grab from playstore. Its free. It does everything already posted and more. Best of all yoyr battery will thank you

I am trying to find out what house keeping should be done to keep a rom fast? This question is not directed to a specific rom, but memory management in general.
I flash a rom, and it runs good. After a day or so [if I keep one that long ] I notice that it starts to slow down. Some times I select a new rom to flash because it is interesting. Other times I select a new rom to flash because the one I am using is slowing down.
If I look at the memory in Titanium Backup, it shows that either or both the system rom memory and internal are getting towards full.
I am using a2sd and it shows some memory used there.
I guess my question is, do we simply need to clear the cache every couple of days, or is there more necessary?,
I appreciate any and all suggestions as how to keep the EVO 4G running faster.
I would clear app cache every couple days. I also reboot at the end of every day. Clear cache and dalvik in recovery one a week or so. I notice this happening with my evo as well. Its not as bad on my rezound though. Probably something to do with free space.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
I agree that clearing cache and rebooting is very helpful. I also use a2sd, dark tremors, and I have noticed that the more free system rom I have the smoother and faster my phone is. I used to use my a2sd to move dalvik to the sd card, now I move the dalvik to the "cache" partition and it seems to run better that way too. I noticed with the dalvik on the sd-ext it would take much longer to wipe and it seemed like I would get random errors... Could be coincidence, but the way I set up my rom's with the a2sd I typically have 100mb+ free in my system rom so its not an issue to keep the dalvik internal. I'm not really an expert but I have had my evo for about 2 years and I have flashed and set up my phone a ton of different ways and a2sd is a must with the evo. I noticed a big difference in smoothness since paying attention to my free internal space. I also have a bricked evo with a spare battery, so I shut my phone down daily for the battery swap. Prior to that I would never turn my phone off or reboot, and since I do it daily it seems I have had less issues.
Sorry for the giant rant, but hopefully I gave you something from all that
I use cache cleaner every morning and each of my Roms gets CoD tweaks added. My stuff runs buttery smooth.

Also try to use odex roms as they are faster than deodexed... and if the rom you like isnt odexed then try to odex it. Not hard just need JRE and dsixdas kitchen then unpack the boot.img and find the bootclasspath i think its in ramdisk somehwhere.

When I got my Tmo gs3 at the launch, it was blazing fast with no lag, maybe an occasional hiccup, and that was completely stock with all of my apps installed. I've been on FreeGS3 & stock kernel for about a month now & I'm starting to see quite a bit of lag in the home screens, opening apps, and especially in the SwiftKey keyboard which has always been extremely responsive in the past? I use the SClean feature that's an add on for the rom to optimize the memory & keep it cleaned up. I also have cleaned cache & dalvik regularly. The first few weeks I ran the rom I had no issues what so ever, so I don't believe the rom is the issue. I check my ram regularly and there's plenty free, and I often close apps that I'm not using. If anyone else has experienced this and has any idea of what's possibly causing it, please share your thoughts. Also, anyone who may have any suggestions or input. Thanks in advance to all who take the time to respond.

Every time you free up ram you are erasing apps that the phone has put In memory so next time they open fast. Once you clear ram the next time you open the same app it will take longer and might be a little laggy

I'm having a similar issue. Also running sclean which helps with the keyboard lag but it comes back. I ran sd maid and had a ton if duplicate files. Not sure what's going in but it's driving me nuts.

I understand, but I'm not clearing the ram, just simply closing apps when I'm finished with them such as Facebook, browser, YouTube, etc. I never dump the ram, as it kills battery, and the ram is holding commonly used apps in order to start them faster.

I appreciate your link, as communicating via Internet it's difficult to know how much each other understands. However, I'm familiar with ram & its purpose, and I've checked all of the obvious possibilities, and I'm sure that it's not related to user error. I suppose the only thing I can do is try flashing a different rom, or return to stock. If the problem isn't present, I can maybe try reflashing freegs3. I appreciate those that have taken the time to respond.
I just recently flashed my Verizon Galaxy Nexus with PARANOIDANDROID 3.15 [Toro] 25-MAR-2013
I love this rom, but unfortunately, I've been getting random reboots, and numerous freezes, which require removing the battery. I get these freezes, and have to remove the battery 4 to 5 times a day (which gets old as you imagine). I just came from a stock JB 4.1.1 Verizon Rom, but have used CM10 and CodenameAndroid ROMS in the past with success.
I'm using TWRP v2.4.1.0. and flashed pa_gapps-full-4.2-20130308.zip along with the PA 3.15 zip (I downloaded both zips from goo.im). I did a factory reset , and cleared the dalvik / cache.
I've done some googling, but haven't found any answers. in all the forums that I have read, people have had no stability issues with this ROM. I really want to stick with this rom, but may be forced to go back to stock if I can't get this rom to run stable.
Any help from the dev community would be much appreciated!
I have had similar problems when expanded desktop and pie are on. I just gave up on them. Runs fine for me as long as pie isn't activated. It's a shame, but a clean install and full wipe never fixed the issues here either. That's just my experience.

Thanks for the reply! I've been having issues even w/o expanded desktop or pie enabled.
What I really like about this rom is the ability to change the resolution in individual apps specifically the browser, (I have a website I need to access for my work that requires a higher res).
I wonder if I was to use an older version of this rom, like the 2.99's, and not have the same freezing issues?
Does anyone have experiences with the older ParanoidAndroid (toro) ROMS?

I have problem in SMS , sometime I cannot send but I can receive, and sometime I can send but missing many incoming messages.
I'm having the same problems with the 3.15-15APR version as well (latest). It tends to happen when apps try to update - they'll get to the install part and then the phone locks up & requires a battery pull to recover. I'm going to try a factory reset and if that doesn't work I'm off to another ROM - I've been on PA for several months, but I can't accept instability to the point that my phone may lock up in my pocket and I'll never know until I try and can't use it.
Edit: I've had tentative success with wiping data from the app manager from Download Manager and the Play Store, which has allowed me to update apps, but I'm crossing my fingers that I won't see any more freezes...
Hi guys, recently my gnex has become laggy. I don't know what the proper reason is. I have tried different roms and on all it's the same. After flashing a new rom once I use it for a few hours it becomes laggy. I have installed Facebook home (patched ). I have uninstalled it thinking it might be the reason and still the same. Any suggestion guys?
Thanks

Did u flash a 4.2.2 ROM ?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I have had this happen to my Galaxy Nexus couple of times, especially since the 4.2.2 update last December.
I know this might be a harsh solution and does take up a lot of time, especially if you have a relatively filled up sdcard (mine is usually around 6-8 gb), and requires using adb, but the best option/solution I found for this is to backup the entire contents of my SD Card to PC, wipe /sdcard, then restore all /sdcard contents.
Meanwhile, I also wipe /system and /data, transfer new ROM/Gapps/Kernel to phone and start with a clean set-up.
In terms of ROM, you can give ATOM a go (xda link in my signature). v12 for magure teamed with AK70 is blazing fast for me.
One thing I avoid doing is filling up my sdcard with music, as it seems as my sdcard gets filled it really slows down the phone.
Again, this is something that works for me, so it is worth a try if no better option is presented to you. As always, don't forget to back-up everything off-line before wiping anything. Best of luck!

Possible solution
Try using apps like Greenify which will makes some of the useless or unwanted apps hibernate for more free ram. Use sdmaid, it'll remove the junk and duplicate files from your phone.
You can also try scripts like v6 supercharger for better ram management and Crossbreeder mod for more entropy.
Try using xenonhd rom 8.0 with ak kernel.
My phone is buttery smooth, fast and stable.
here try this thread :good: !
that could be the reason..
I’ve had the GNex since the day it came out. Unlocked bootloader, flashed a new rom and did everything from there.
I’ve noticed that with every new nightly build, there was always a bug here and there which made it felt like this phone was never really solid.
Don’t get me wrong. I love this phone and it has served me well.
Recently, I bought the nexus 5 for my wife. Instantly, it felt a billion times faster right out of the box compared to my custom GNex.
It got me thinking, was the GNex always been THIS SLOW and LAGGY? Or is it the wrong ROM I’ve been using all this time? I’ve went from PA to AOKP to Slim and now Liquid. I’ve used the latest Kitkat on all and there’s ALWAYS this super bad lag after using it for a few days.
It got to the point where I did a FULL DATA WIPE on every new nightly that came out.
I’ve always done the following when installing a new ROM:
1. Wipe Data
2. Wipe cache
3. Wipe dalvik
4. Reboot into recovery again. Repeat 1-3 then install new ROM, then gapps.
5. Reboot phone one last time to finalize.
The new ROM always feels smooth/fast in the beginning, but after a while, it feels like $H*t.
I've also tried this with different combination of kernels such as Franco, Dirty V and with ART enable and disabled.
Any difference is negligible and doesn't seem to vastly improve performance.
I don’t have many apps. In fact, 95% of the apps I use are google apps (gmail, etc) Then I have pandora, evernote and a couple of other productive apps and that’s about it.
So what’s really slowing down my GNex? Too many flashes in the past 2-years? Bad ROM? Bad installation?
Or has it always been like this and I just haven’t noticed how slow/laggy it was?
Your help would be appreciated. I really don’t want to jump onto a new phone quite yet.
First of all dont even try to compare it to the Nexus 5. Its just a newer phone.. Of course its faster. My phone is flying. Things age over time. Soaybe your device is just aging. And with the right kernel and settings you can make your phone really fast. I never had lag but I had faster and slower roms or kernels.. Its what you make of it and what you think is lag..

In that case, please share your every details. I'd love to try them out and give new life to my GNex.
Which ROM, which kernel, performance, every main settings etc...
Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 5 are just different generations of the family, they ought to have differences. In my opinion, no matter how you optimize our Galaxy Nexus, it can run nicely, the animations can be mostly smooth, but it just couldn't catch up to a Nexus 5, mostly in apps' loading speed and other things that requires sheer CPU power. Sure, it doesn't even catch up to my properly optimized Nexus 4.

GNex 5 is not comparable to Nexus 5.I have tried GNex earlier and i am quite dissatisfied from it.Now i switched to Nexus 5 and there no hanging problem in nexus 5 at all and provide good memory usage.

Have you gave Vanir a try? If you haven't already well maybe you should because this is by far the smoothest/fastest ROM available for the Gnex. It may lag here and there but it is certainly tolerable given that this a 2+ year old phone.
Comparing the gnex to any current flagship phone is kind of silly considering they all contain the latest and greatest in CPU's/GPU's + more ram . So obviously there will be significant differences in terms of performance...not sure why you would expect anything else.
Give vanir a try and see if your Gnex runs a little better. PA AOKP and CM11 are noticeably laggier than Vanir...don't know why but they just are. If Vanir doesn't make your Gnex experience any better well just deal with it until you buy a new phone.

It's just that I don't recall the phone being THIS SLOW compared last year or a few months ago when JB was around.
It definitely feels so much more laggier these days.
Has it been a global change in all the ROMs that infected all gnex roms?
Compared to newer phones our Galaxy Nexus is slower i think. I got my Mum the Motorola Moto G and it does seem a lot more responsive than my Galaxy Nexus running the CM11 M4 Build.
However i do have a lot of apps running in the background such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Push Email and so on, the Moto G was a fresh phone with nothing on.
I do feel the Galaxy Nexus is significantly faster with a 4.4 rom, compared to 4.3 or 4.2, however its not as snappy as a newer device, which considering the phone is 2 and a half years old i dont think you can expect it to be.
I think also apps get more demanding, i mean WhatsApp is getting huge now and using more ram, as are other apps you likely use on a daily basis.
I dont have lag.. Maybe you can share your setup/settings with us? And the Moto G is a newer phone with F2FS this makes it faster.. Also please dont use the facebook app. It slows your device and eats battery and ram. Probably all developers here will tell you the app should be banned from google play.

I've noticed that my navigation bar always consists of 5 items: Google Now, Back, Home, Recents and Last app.
I used those very frequently. To each one of those, I've also assigned a long press action to them: Bookmark#1, #2, Voice Command, Calculator and app drawer.
My nav ring has 5 item as well, with each their own long press.
I tend to launch each app not using the recents button, but rather the shortcuts that I've assigned them. That way, all apps I frequently access is only a single press or swipe away. The more buttons I press, the more I am annoyed.
^^ Could this be the reason why my phone laggs so much?

1. If you compare the Galaxy Nexus with the Nexus 5, you're trying to compare a ferrari 599 GTO with a Ferrari 360 spyder. -_- dafuq.
Yes spyder is fast, but the freaking technology advanced by 3 years.
2. Performance is not completely comprimised. It's by how much you make the ROM lean, and how efficient each custom kernel runs on your device.
3. Make sure the KERNEL you use has the optimizations you want.
Cheers.
