A few questions now that I'm in Jelly Bean - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

How can I make a favorites page in the phone app? It's a bummer having to scroll through 200 contacts when I frequently use only 8 on a daily basis.
Does anyone know of a good notes application similar to the iPhone one? I used Gmail sync on the iPhone (so my notes are saved) and just need a no hassle way to save text quickly.
Can I somehow get a few of the Samsung apps back? I suppose the only thing I really miss at this moment is the voice recorder...
Thanks,
T

To add favorites (they appear on the 3rd tab in the Phone app), open their contact and click the Star up in the top-right corner.

That's a negative on samsung apps. Go find a voice recorder in the market.

I've been using Easy Voice Recorder for quite a while now (though the free version has a recording limit of something like 1 hour). It even includes a widget for instant recording. Give it a try. The S3 with noise cancellation makes for an excellent recording device. I've dubbed its audio tracks over video and after a little audacity post-process you'd be hard-pressed to tell it wasn't recorded on a pro microphone.
None of the Samsung apps will be coming to CM or AOKP, because their fangs are sunk too deep into the touchwiz framework itself and can't stand alone.

Thanks for the detailed reply. EverNote seems like it will let me record audio and also attach some text with it, which will be ideal for song demos while I'm working out the lyrics. If that doesn't work I'll give EVR a try.
Who knows, I may end up going back to TouchWiz once the official Jelly Bean update is out, but I'm really enjoying CM in the meantime.

Yeah I figure I though i would ask. I seen an Ad of The The Shift @ the top and it look like the Incoming screen was Full Screen.
best thing i can recommend is using
the appmarket that doesnt make you pay, try a few the buy the one that works best.
not sure if i can name that market or if its wares. but buy the one that is best and support the developer.

I use FULL SCREEN CALLER ID and i ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT
It truely is an awesome program.. I found it online and downloaded it for free, but in order to get it to work correctly (i.e. sync all the facebook photos) i had to download and install the old version, then upgrade to the new version .. when i just downloaded the new version the sync would never work, it only worked when i installed the old version, then upgraded to the new version...
But it allows you to sync all your friends facebook photo's and go in and use your own Hi-Def pictures for all your friends.. It truly does look amazing when you an 8 megapixel photo you took with your EVO to make a full screen photo when someone calls, the picture quality is so crisp and clean.. I love this app, it's definitely in my top 5 favorite apps... there is a free version and a paid version of the app in the market, i think the paid version is like 5 bucks or less.. But i would 100% recommend this app, It also allows for modificaiton of the answer/call buttons and other animation stuff too, along with Full Screen photo's for text messaging and missed calls too..it's great, Once you start using full screen photo's for text's and phone calls youll never ever ever ever go back to using the linky dinky mini little pictures stock rom uses, The program is very well made and very nice and professionally done, and it looks very clean and minimalistic
agreed FULL SCREEN CALLER ID is the way to go

[Q] What you like seen in the next major update to ICS?

There is no denying that ICS is a major step forward for android phones (and it is awesome!) but what feature etc. do you feel should be included in the next major update?
One thing I would like is a quick access button to toggle the auto-rotate screen on and off! I use my phone a lot in bed and it`s imposable to use the phone with auto-rotate on (as with many smartphones I have tried).

download a widget app like Widgetsoid. You can make yourself an auto-rotate on/off widget
USB host OTG (promised but not delivered).
Syncing of the default browser with Chromium or Chrome.
I'd like to see some Siri competition.
Onboard external storage with ssd speeds. Even tighter and consistent integration with hardware and software. Methinks there is still going to be a clusterfuck of hardware and software still to come. Oem overlays should be optional and/or pick and choose what you like from their launcher. Still boggles my mind people buy a samsung or motorola phone and want sense on their rom. No sense if you ask me.

PS: Didn't mean to thank you - wrong button, but oh well!
I want the stock Gallery App to be as smooth and as quick just like the rest of the OS. How come when you flick through photos and do pinch to zoom it's still sluggish just like on Android 2.2? Can't it be fast like the Browser?
Cannot think of much anything major yet, but here some minor ones:
The Google search bar is really unnecessary.
A disable option for the shutter sound would be nice but I guess they don't have it for legal reasons.
Maybe a pre-loaded plain black wall paper.
I would like to see integration with google talk throughout the device. I woild love for it to be like bbm/imessanger. I use it a lot and feel like it has great potential.

Will never happen.
BBM and iMessage work because the only devices that can communicate via those methods are the mobile phones themselves.
Google Talk works with computers too. Meaning that there is a large margin for disjointed conversations where part of the conversation is completely lost and unable to be referenced without getting the other person to repeat themselves.

I'd be surprised if they took that out - where when the phone is in silent/vibrate there is no shutter sound. That's how it's always been on my OG Droid, especially back when it was stock.

Or simply have it do exactly what it does now, and sync conversations across devices? All that needs to be done is have Android device detection, like iMessaging, so that sms conversations automatically switch to Talk (or a rebranded version of Talk).
Regarding shutter sound: Can't we just rename/delete the soundfile, so it cannot be played? What's the filename and where do I find it?

I don't quite understand. Why is it that when you bring computers into this equation, part of the conversation is liable to being lost?

There is an app called Smart Rotator which I use to only allow certain apps (ie Gallery) to autorotate. Very handy.
i wonder how ICS's keyboard is like.. Particularly, the horizontal keyboard. For some reason, in many of the text fields when using (practically) any type of keyboard, default, swiftkey, (and i don't remember the names of the other ones that i've tried in the past), the horizontal keyboard does not show the background at all. It makes a big text field of the field that you are typing and the touch keyboard takes up the rest with the "next" or "done" at the top right.
It's extremely un-user friendly. I want the apple style keyboard where regardless which orientation you are in, you can still see half of the keyboard, AND add a row to show all of the corrections/suggestions.
Hope that's in ICS, if not, please make it happen in the next update!

What do you use since there is no default note taking / voice rec apps

I never understood why google don't add a note taking / voice recording app to the AOSP, so wanted to see what you guys use that fills this gap?
I currently have flicknote for notes (syncs to my simplenote, which is great), don't have anything for audio recording at the moment.
I use Catch. It's backed up online, so if I'm flashing between ROMs I don't have to keep track of backing it up.

This. I use Evernote for all my note taking.
Ditto for Evernote, as far as note-taking goes. I've never needed to record audio notes, so can't comment there.
I use ColorNote, free app.
If you download LauncherPro, and open up the activities widget in the normal launcher, then scroll down to sound recorder option and select it, you will then have access to the hidden sound recorder app on the home screen, similar to how you access the Rocket Launcher.

Swype with Google Voice....

Hi
Anyone know how to tell Swype Beta to use google voice instead of the fire "Dragon Dictate" as Jellybean has offline voice typing and is far superior.
Just a shame the stock samsung keyboard with its swipe isnt as good.
Anyway, so far only way Ive found by leaving swype as default is to pull down notification bar when Im about to do voice typing and just select google voice from the input method.
I would just prefer to press the mic button though...
Thanks

Swype is not open source correct?
If not, could one develop an app that overlaps the voice button on Swype provides that launches Google Voice instead?

If one likes Swype but HATES the terrible predictive speech recognition of Dragon Go, yes it does matter.
That being said, I guess we can't do it, so thanks to the poster who brought Kii to our attention; it'll do, though it's not as fluid as Swype for keyboard swyping.
Temporary Solution
Sorry that I'm a little late getting in on this thread, but I have a temp solve.
(Disclaimer ... for anyone interested: I, too, use Swype, religiously, because it is way faster than any other gesturing keyboard in Android - I type a lot of text, using a Note 2, and Swype is constantly helping me break all my speed records. Dragon, however, is a pain, for one, because it is not as stable as Google Voice, often giving me grief when connectivity is sporadic; but also because the software is slightly more bloated than Google Voice, causing the annoying "fade in" graphical interface which drags down on its listening response time. This lag is noticeable when you are "Swyping" at 80 words a minute when transitioning to speaking texts suddenly takes 4 times as long as "Swyping.")
Sooooo...
A temporary solution (despite the extra key presses) is to...
1) Long press on the text window
2) Select "Full Editor" from the pop up menu
3) Tap the "Google Mic" icon
And that's pretty much it. It is, unfortunately, an annoying solution, but for me, it's working faster than Dragon on the average. Hope that helps someone, particularly JoeyDVDZ

Not having Google Voice with Swype finally bothered me enough that I have been working on such a thing! I have a proof-of-concept working fairly well on my phone (Nexus 4), and now I'd like to find someone with a rooted S3 willing to try it out there. It requires root to be able to inject keystrokes into an app. If you have a rooted S3, please shoot me a message at [email protected], and I'll discuss it with you some more.
(I've posted a similar message in the S4 section. Since these are two of the most popular devices, I'd like to see if, and how well, it works on them before pursuing it further.)

Yes, it's built in to my Nexus 4, but it's not as good as Swype at getting the word I want. I've tried them all, and I always end up coming back to Swype. Google's voice typing is better than Dragon Dictate, though, so this is the best of both.

(Comparison) Handcent vs Chompsms vs Stock

Hey guys I just want to have people's opinions about the above apps. I have S3 and have been using my stock messaging app with SMSpop up to handle the notifications when I receive texts. Lately I've been reading about these two messaging apps and I have been interested in trying them especially because I want emoji support (I hate my iPhone friends lool). Anyways tell me what messaging app you use and why you love it.
I know what someone will say maybe you should try them out and do research. I have seen review videos for both apps, but I don't really have the time to try them out one by one. I'd rather read reviews than try them.
If I do install a 3rd party messaging app I can keep SMSpop up? Or do the 3rd party apps take care of those functions as well? Such as personalized LED lights per contact and custom text tone for each contact?
thanks for your time and recommendations.
:good::good:
I also get paranoid installing and deleting things in my phone because if it slows down I feel like the program installed a file that didn't delete when I uninstalled. I know I'm paranoid but I know both apps use ads to support their free version.
I have used handcent on all my android phones. I've tried go sms and chomp sms but I always end up back woth handcent. I don't remember if the other two had pop up text, but handcent does. I'd suggest just try each one for a few days and see which one you like best.

Honestly... You do have time. Ha. Both handcent and chomp will receive your messages. And it only takes a couple seconds to install... If you install it receive messages and end up not liking it un install and try the other, they're not going anywhere and having it won't halt your daily life. So you absolutely have time to try each out if you desire. And if you watched a lot of video reviews some of these questions should have been answered... Personally I used to always use handcent mostly because of the feature to use a password to access texts. But I also like it as a texting app

Used Handcent for a long time, but then my wife got an HTC 8x (Windows mobile) and my daughter an iPhone 5 w iOS6, and neither of them could see my emojis; I tried all three " how to encode emojis" settings in Handcent, none made a difference. Even though including emojis isn't exactly a deal breaker , I like fiddling with apps so I tried Go SMS Pro - worked fine with emojis, but access to Quick Text was cumbersome (needed several taps). So now I am using chompSMS - emojis work fine, access to quick text is easy (though it's called "templates"). The only thing I don't like is that all three SMS apps have outgoing messages on the right, incoming on the left. For some reason (don't really understand it myself !!) I prefer it the other way around. You can make that switch in Handcent & Go, but not in chomp.....
I honestly don't recommend any of the above apps unless you have a slow phone. I'd use GO SMS Pro, fully featured and flies off the handle. It pops up text messages too, and has a free add on where you can use and see all iOS 6 emojis.

Are you rooted? If you are just use this link:

I don't know what happens when you flash straight up but I manually unzipped on phone and placed files in correct location while backing up originals. This will give emoji in stock app so you can your current setup and still have emoji!
I have used handcent for a long time on many different devices. I have tried other apps, GoSMS and Chomp, and have always returned to handcent. I like the privacy inbox and the fact that it does not run as a service like GoSMS. I do like GoSMS, but find it ridiculous that you can not disable it as a service.
Also, handcent has a setting to change its priority allowing security and location apps like Cerberus and Androidlost to work properly.
Thanks guys
I've used all of them for a while now. I decided to stick with Chomp sms its basic but works really well hasn't crashed and my battery has seen no change. Even MMS I feared would appear when I used this app did not surface so overall it was a nice experience and I am sticking to it. I wish I had more friends so I could test out the group message but if its something I don't use a lot I am not gonna worry if it works 100% correctly.
IMO GO SMS is the best for functionality and themes. Only thing I don't like about it is that every time I send MMS is resizes the crap out of it whereas stock handles it pretty good but then again it could be my fault for not changing or changing something in the settings.
i use handcent as well. love the popup even on the lock screen. you can read and reply without unlocking your phone, good assortment of themes and lots of settings

+1. Never had any issues with Chomp. And the main person I text (my wife) has an iPhone 4s that I jailbroke and is running Chomp's iOS version which is a jailbroken app called BiteSMS. Emojis/MMS work perfect between the two of us.

I've used stock mms since I got my phone, and believe me I tried gosms as well as handcent but I still kept going back to stock. gosms was too bloaty like a previous poster mentioned while handcent has that ugly gingerbread feel to it. stock looks and feels slick and has just the right amount of customization and not overloaded with features like gosms.
Then i tried messages+ (in addition to contacts/dialer/call log+) and oh man. It has the same slickness as stock and I just really love the UI. its not laggy at all, it feels as though this should have been the stock mms app. Oh and it has the AOSP popup feature.
everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is mine. if your a day over 15 and you use a stupid sms replacement then you need to look deep into your soul because this is srs bizns.
the simplicity and beauty of aosp's app is what set's it apart. if google could do anything to improve it i would be impressed because imo its perfect
the other ones are garbage. not even a fair comparison because the other one's are for children.
GO SMS ftw. And yes it does have pop up text and its very customizable.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I personally use GoSMS. It has a few features that other's do NOT... Like the ability to have seperate & customizable MMS receive settings (mmsc, proxy, port, etc) custom user agent, and change the way it resizes MMS pictures and what the maximum size can be - all separately and independently from the stock mms app.
It does have pop up notification, custom status bar icons for individual contacts, custom individual message tones.... very nice. And its themeable which I do like...
I can't speak of handscent... but I will say this, I was an iPhone user for 4+ years before my current GS3, and on the iPhone BiteSMS is kind, which IS ChompSMS on android -- and I tried it but overall liked GoSMS better... I can't speak of the service running, etc... I will say MOST of the themes cost money, so that sucks - and I use the free ones.
I'm on T-mobile USA, and the NETWORK limits MMS to 300k - plain and simple, so regardless of anything else, your image is going to be resized by the network to 300k regardless what app you use.... (unless something has changed recently on T-mobile network). Another advantage of GoSMS is the customizable UAPROF (user agent) --- This is the string the phone sends to the network server telling HOW to deliver the MMS to your device. The wrong UAPROF results in crappy images. The RIGHT UAPROF results in very nice images. THIS IS A BIG FACTOR IN QUALITY OF MMS - ESPECIALLY IF YOUR USING UNLOCKED PHONES OR NON-BRANDED PHONES ON CERTAIN NETWORKS.... That *ALONE* makes GoSMS worth it (depending on your phone & network combination)
ChompSMS was fine, I just liked GoSMS better for whatever the reason? they're pretty much the same (minus the customizable settings in GoSMS). Now that I'm using a T-mobile branded phone on the T-mobile network, none of the custom settings matter anymore, and if I use the stock mms/messaging app on my current custom rom (darthstalker) I am able to send MMS over wifi just like sending over data. Also receive over wifi....

Why I hate the default messaging/mms app.................. When I get a picture, it plays as a slideshow in a tiny preview unless I save it and view in gallery. UNACCEPTABLE. GoSMS doesn't do that.... I get a picture and I see it using the default viewer - in full screen. NOT AS A SLIDE SHOW. If the default app would do this, I'd probably be using it with some kind of smspopup tweak.
