I just got an HTC One X, and it's already been rooted. The recovery is TWRP and that's all I know. I'm trying to flash a ROM, but first I need to flash the boot.img, and that's the problem. I can't. There's an automated process, and I followed the steps, got into fastboot usb but the program just sits on waiting for device. Also, when I boot into fastboot it only shows fastboot in red, until I move down towards power off, then it changes into fastboot usb. So, I have no idea what's going on, or if I'm missing something since I wasn't the one who rooted it.
Any help would be great, thanks and I apologize if this has already been asked.
Problem solved: issue with Windows 8.

when you are in fastboot usb
then that time open cmd in ur computer and go to fastboot folder
extract boot img from custom rom zip and place in fastboot folder
then use command
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
then goto recovery and flash custom ROM
or alternatively check this thread:

I just tried it manually as well.
CMD
cd C:\fastboot
fastboot flash boot boot.img
I'm getting waiting for device via this method as well, so my device isn't connected or my computer isn't seeing it and I don't know why. I have flashboot usb in red, so I assumed it was working.
No one knows? Is it a file that I may be missing or a driver?

Did you use the same PC for rooting ? Do you have HTC Sync (drivers) installed ? Try with a different USB port.

Sounds like drivers,
Update your packages on Android SDK, most noticeably the Google usb driver. (all whilst phone is plugged in of course)
Also check that usb debugging is enabled on your phone.

I wasn't the one who rooted the phone. I installed the HTC sync software and even installed separate driver for it where its now labeled "My HTC".
I installed the Android SDK along with the USB package and still no go. Don't remember if I had the phone plugged in at the time but I believe I did.
Thanks for the answers. I'll keep trying things out. Anymore advice would be appreciated.

Usb debugging enabled on the phone?
& installed all the packages on Android-SDK?
What adb commands are you typing, did you install Android-SDK to its default location?
Default commands aint what you were typing above.
The default location is:
CD c:/Android-SDK/platform-tools

USB de-bugging enabled, yes.
I installed the required packages, even the 4.0 and up images. I installed the SDK under C:\ just like I did with fastboot.
What are the default commands? I only used the commands that I seen being advised to use.
I just tried to reboot it using the command adb reboot. It just said: device not found, which confirms my problem. My computer isn't detecting the phone while it's in fastboot and I don't know why. Is there a specific driver that you need for the device while it's in fastboot?
Also, while in fastboot in device manager it's under Android 1.0 with a yellow triangle. While, out of fastboot it's under My HTC.

Ok, so you installed to a folder called fastboot instead of the default 'Android-SDK'?
This would make fastboot still located in platform-tools, right?
So after putting the boot.img inside c:/fastboot/platform-tools
Put phone in fastboot usb
Open command prompt on pc
CD c:/fastboot/platform-tools
fastboot flash boot boot.img

No-no, I installed in C:\ under the name Android so C:\Android\SDK but I also have a fastboot folder, which is under C:\ as well. I'm missing something and I know it has to be a driver but I jsut don't know what driver.

Nope, the command isn't the problem. I told you I have a separate fastboot folder I downloaded and put in C:\. So, C:\fastboot - fastboot flash boot boot.img. Same command. Problem isn't the command, it's that my computer isn't detecting my device while it's in fastboot and the command gets stuck on "waiting for device." Until I can get my computer to recognize the phone, commands are useless.
Also, I still tried the command you gave me just to see, same problem. Waiting for device.

Ok I think I've actually broken my One X.
I was trying to put a default ROM back onto the system, I had my phone plugged into my PC, and "ran Android_Revolution_HD_Super_Wipe_One_X"
STUPIDLY I deleted a couple of files off the SD card in Windows Explorer, and now I cant get into recovery mode for ClockwordMod Recovery (as I'm assuming like an idiot I deleted it somehow)
Literally if I boot the phone it won't go past the HTC welcome screen.
I apologise profusely if this is already covered elsewhere - but I am an absolute noob and do not understand much of the jargon. I shouldn't have messed in the first place, I could cry
1. Fastboot and erase the cache, that will then allow you back into the recovery.
2. Fastboot the boot.img to your phone, as S-OFF won't allow the clockwork to flash it.
3. Don't panic. You can always recover the phone through Fastboot.
I should know, i was once in your position.
thanks for the reply,
I read about erasing the cache, but I have no idea how.
the guide just says type it into your pc
sorry again for being thick!
No problem.
Do you have fastboot open on your pc? if so.
Type : fastboot erase cache
Then download the Boot.img from ARHD, and follow the instructions.
Mike has included a .bat file that will automatically erase the cache and flash the boot image. I suggest going on to his forum and running the file.
I know I have downloaded it (I'm so lost) but the file in my downloads isn't something that opens a program?
Thanks a bunch!
It should have a .bat named install-boot, it shouldn't run a program, but open in CMD with options displayed on what to do next. Follow the instructions and you'll be fine.
ok I don't have a file called install-boot, just adb, fastboot and a few .dll files. both exe files flash cmd but it doesnt remain open.
any chance you can point me in the direction of this software as it would appear i have the wrong thing!

It seems like we need to get back to basics a bit. Are you familiar with MS-DOS? Those programs are not meant to be run from windows by clicking on them. They are run with command lines typed in a DOS type window that is opened when you type "cmd" into your search box in windows.

sorry, confusing fastboot and flashboot I think,
I'm being told that I'm missing adbwinapi.dll - looking into it
I'm no genius but I'm not usually this bad, just so worried - got the phone 12 hours ago, naturally feeling sick!
ok, followed the steps with flashboot (ran the cache delete and install-boot)
still not let into recovery. it goes past the htc sense screen, all black with a mobile with green arrows in a circle (like a sync) which eventually changed to a triangle with '!' in it.
what am i missing?
You can't delete recovery through windows explorer for the record.

sorry noob alert again: how do i do this?
Sounds like it has the stock recovery on it. Download the Cwm recovery and you should have a file called recovery.img. Place this file in the adb platform-tools folder. Go to that location in cmd prompt then type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img or you can find on xda via search one x all in one kit which if you download and open then put your phone in fastboot mode via bootloader will allow you to flash Cwm recovery and should do it for you

ok, I have managed to boot a recovery (i think) and can now get into CWM, only problem now, is that my PC no longer recognises my phone in order for me to put any ROM files onto the SD card so that it can load them?
Yes Cwm does not support sd mount atm. I think you will need to refer to the post by someone saying relock bootloader and flash ruu. You will need to find and download the ruu that matches your device. ie network your on and country ur in. As I'm guessing you have deleted the rom image of the sd or nand backup?

and if you have the drivers already, try to disable your antivirus and/or firewall before plugging your device. (it happened to me, my antivirus had too strict settings, preventing HTC drivers to install correctly, and also preventing adb to see my device plugged.)
I did download the drivers but nothing happened.
just a one more question. Is it okay to install the boot.img before the ROM?

Yes, as long as you go back to recovery right after flashing the boot image and install the ROM, otherwise your phone MAY not boot up (it should boot up and work, but it's a digital device)...
try unplugging...and then selecting HBOOT.....it might not give that error ...
still i cant load the fricking boot.img!!!!!!!
everytime i try it says "cannot load boot.img"
any help
hi
It seems like its a problem wiith the path from which u run the fastboot command.....what is the location of boot.img in ur system? is it in the same folder as fastboot.exe? and while giving the command 'fastboot flash....' what is the location that the command prompt is showing?(the working directory)
Once in the bootloader you must select FASTBOOT first and then connect via usb and type in fastboot devices. If it returns a number you're connected. That, may fix your issue.

you should see you phones serial number

I don't get it. At my boatloader, there are option: fastboot, recovery, factory reset, somlock, system info & img crc. When I enter fastboot, there are option bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader & power down. What should I do? PC10IMG is already in my sd, but it fail to flash during hboot.
fastboot on you phone just puts you in fastboot mode, no commands are to be done with your phone rather your pc.
in the sdk you downloaded from android (I assume you rooted this yourself and I assume you have windows)
find a folder in the sdk called platform-tools. here should be fastboot.exe in this folder place your recovery image and name it recovery.img (not recovery.img.img)
now open cmd here (hold shift, right click in folder, select open command here)
now on pc type
fastboot devices
you should see you phones id, if you don't you did something wrong and we need to figure it out, if you see it then proceed
now type

now type
fastboot reboot recovery
you should now be in your new recovery

the phone id not appear, and the next command, the cmd reply error: cannot load. Probably the phone is not detected. any idea ....?
have you been able to use adb before? fastboot is similar, you need the proper drivers (same as adb) and you need to point cmd to the right place, either change the path in enviromental variables or change directories to fastboot.exe
this is also done by holding shift and right clicking in the folder fastboot.exe is in, then choose open command here.
in cmd if you type "fastboot devices" and it says waiting for device it isn't regestering it, your phone needs to be on, connected via usb, in fastboot mode on phone, drivers installed on pc. let me know where the trouble is

If the response is blank then you may not have the correct drivers installed for your phone. There are a number of ways to get the drivers; one way is to install PDAnet http://junefabrics.com/android/download.php
You don't even have to complete the whole install, just go until the driver is installed. In any case you can uninstall PDAnet and it will leave the drivers on your system.
When fastboot is finally able to recognize your phone then you can flash the boot.img by doing fastboot flash boot boot.img
(this assumes that boot.img is the actual name of the file, it should be unless you renamed it or downloaded it from somewhere)
is fastboot just a folder i create with the boot.img inside of it?

No, fastboot is a tool within the Android SDK. You used it when you unlocked your bootloader.
i bought this phone off another guy who had it rooted and loaded
where is the fastboot folder located in android sdk manager?
Download this file http://www.mediafire.com/?50baad8rykng2j0
Create a folder on your C: drive called fastboot and extract the .zip into the fastboot folder

alright ill try that out thanks
ended up bringing my phone to the cell shop. I know its an easy fix but cant seem to find that folder.. they said it was a 50/50 chance and will charge me $80 if they can get it to work...think it was a good idea?
Not really. Seems the only thing your phone needed to boot was the boot.img. That would have been done in a couple minutes. As already said here: you simply need to put the android sdk on your c: drive, put the boot.img in that folder, go into bootloader and connect your device with your pc, it should say fastboot USB, open command prompt, go to the direction of your sdk folder and use the fastboot command to flash the boot.img. It should then boot.

Sounds like they haven't got a clue what they're doing.
Should have just done it yourself, it's really not difficult.
hmm okay i might just go back tmr and get it my phone back.. thanks. I'll let you know if I succeed or not
First of all I did some research on Xda regarding my issue, the issue is my phone keeps on bootlooping it did this first time during the night while the phone was sleeping and then it did it today while I was on Xda developer it just froze. I don't know anything about if my bootloader is locked but it isn't rooted with s-on and fully stock. I can go to the recovery using power and vol down, but it doesn't have any affect I tried erasing the data but it just goes back in to a bootloop. I have been reading this threat http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020931
"Relock your bootloader using the commend 'fastboot oem lock'.
Go into fastboot mode and type 'fastboot oem rebootRUU'.
Flash the new firmware using the commend 'fastboot flash zip firmware.zip'.
On first time running the commend you will see FAILED, don't panic and just run the commend again.
Reunlock your bootloader via HTCDev.
Flash custom recovery using the commend 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'.
Download boot.img and flash it using the commend ‘fastboot flash boot boot.img’.
Use the commend 'fastboot erase cache' to avoid boot issues.
Go into recovery and install the ROM.
Reboot your device and enjoy from JB!"
I have some questions regarding this threat one of the members mentioned some steps like locking the bootloader then unlocking it. I have visited the HTC dev website and I'm finding it hard to figure how to use command prop. If I save the files to the c drive how do I locate it using cammand prop C:// (is this right?). If I connect my phone to the computer and I download the content that the member had mentioned (boot img and new firmware) where do I place these files, on the root of the sd on the phone? I can't possibly do that because after jb hox it cannot go to usb mount without root. I have two hox's one updated fine and is stock the other has been behaving funny. The phone did go into a bootloop previously but after the battery died I tired the phone on and it was working fine till one day later. The first issue I had was it was stuck on HTC boot screen then I turned it of and now it's stuck in bootloop. The only thing that I can figure out is keep it in recovery and allow the battery to die recharge it and factory reset it if it boots successfully.
Any help will be very appriciated

I just turned the phone on after I drained the battery leaving it on recovery mode and it has successfully booted but it did this before after the battery died when it went into its first bootloop during two nights ago. I know that this is only a temporary fix I feel there is something wrong with the battery or something related to that although it had more than 30% when I upgraded to jb although it was charging while updating.
Edit: I just put the phone into recovery and selected recovery it went to a screen with a phone and a bar underneath and then it rebooted asking me to go through the beginner tutorial. I don't know if the issue has been fixed yet.

Don't know for sure, but don't go unlocking the bootloader and flashing stuff. The bootloader is LOCKED. you have full warranty with that
Is the jb ruu available so I can re flash it, also can I not clear the cache using command prop what are my options? I'd the jb ruu os not avalible if I flash the ics ruu can I still recieve the ota of jb.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
No you cant flash the ics ruu because we can not downgrade the hboot. Give me your main version and see if i can hook you up with a ruu !
Fastboot getvar version-main
You tried a factory reset from the bootloader menu ?
And you can enter the recovery when you see that phone with the bar, just press volume down and power button. You see the phone with the bar because its the stock recovery
How do find out the main version? Yes I will try to factory reset through recovery.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
You put the phone in the bootloader and press hboot one time , it should say
Fastboot usb in red text
Then open a command prompt inside the fastboot folder and type
Fastboot getvar version-main
I went to recovery and connected a usb to the phone I clicked fastboot and above the hboot the fastboot usb was highlighted in red I clicked hboot and it went back to the main menu so I did it again without clicking hboot ans I opened command prop and it said C> so I typed fastboot getvar version-main it said fastboot wa not recognised I think I didn't type it properly can you help me.
The phone is now booting up but it keeps on saying sense crash then it freezes. It doesn't bootloop any more it just messes up.

Install these drivers
http://db.tt/gXVxa3Dp
Put these files in a folder where you can find them, open a command there and perform it again.
And leave the screen on in the bootloader where it says fastboot usb !

Ok so i had the same issue when i first tried to flash the new firmware on my htc one x
i was in bootloop for hours and didnt know what was going on
what fixed it for me was flashing the boot.img from the rom i had downloaded
try flashing the boot.img included in your rom it should be in the .zip file of the rom
after that i didnt experience any bootloops
Edit: i see you have problems with fastboot you first need to change to the directory where the fastboot files are stored
so you need to use the command cd to change to the directory(folder) of the fastboot files
for example my command would be cd C:\Users\Nimbs\Desktop\HTC ONE X fastboot folder

You clearly did not read ! He is already on the 1.39 hboot he does NOT have to flash a firmware, the bootloader is LOCKED so he has warranty ! The phone is 100% STOCK !!! He only wants to run a RUU to check if the problems are going away ! And the only option is a RUU because unlocking the bootloader in this case will void the warranty he still has ! .........
And please don't flash just the firmware, its actually non official released stuff !!!
And you also did not read my post, you are giving incorrect advice and posting the same info i already did. Please read the next time
I charged the phone then I connected it to the computer placed in recovery with it saying fastboot usb in red. I placed the four Dropbox files in my documents in a file called HTC driver. Then I opened command prop and it said C> then I typed /My documents/htc driver folder/fastboot getvar version-main and then I selected enter and it said my isn't recognised so I then placed user before it and it said user isn't rocognised so then I placed the user name and it said xyz not recognised. I don't know how to locate the files using command prop I placed all the files I downloaded in one file. I can't seem to understand how to use the directory sorry for being such a beginner at this I'm just not used to this. The last time I messed with a ruu and custom roms was when I had htc desire hd.

Put the files in a new FOLDER , not in a FILE ....
navigate to that folder in windows and press shift and right click inside that folder ....then you execute the command on the doscommand window that you just opened
Sorry for the mistype I placed it in a folder. So basically I open command then using windows explorer I press shift and right click to exacute the command okay.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
No you use the windows explorer to navigate to the folder then you do the shift + right click and then you type the command in the dos window
First of all I cannot run command the through shift+right click. I did download a add on from Microsoft that allows this functionality but thier was a issue. The only way I can locate the file is through command prop but it almost seems impossible to use. I don't know what to do I think I'm out of luck, all I can do is throw it back at htcs face for replacement. I tried to learn how to use command prop and but I haven't succeeded.
