Turn on {} Developer Options -> Force GPU Rendering
I'm a tinkerer and had turned that on a while back when dinking with the stock settings. I started having freezes, Home Page reloading, slow everything, HORRIBLE power useage, and I was basicly just hating my phone.
I was to the point of thinking about selling it and getting a SGS3 but I went into the settings and saw that was still on, turned it off, and haven't had any problems since.
Obviously this is one of those YMMV type options. I'd say stay away from it.

ive always left force gpu rendering on. Never had a single problem. I keep it on simply because of the transitions seem another. Weird that yours did that. In all honesty i think its pretty standard default setting to be on on asop roms

According to pocket now force gpu rendering is basically used to off load the graphical tasks given to the CPU in apps that aren't optimized for ICS. ICS has this option enabled by default when writing apps for it but with apps written on GB down to cupcake 1.6, gpu rendering when writing apps is off by default.
Basically, leave it on as its probably helping your CPU run older unoptimized apps more efficiently since it doesn't have to process the graphical UI for that app too.

Been thinking about this for a while. Exactly what type of apps benefit the most from having GPU Acceleration enabled and what type of apps have bad side-effects from having it enabled? I noticed that if you have it enabled and try to click on the weather graph in the "News&Weather" app it produces a foreclosure.

Hi,
I take you mean "force GPU acceleration"?
The setting in the dev section of the phone just forces it on, it doesn't "enable" it...
What I can think of is "old" games and graphic intense apps, not supported and developed anymore ... or very rarely apps that don't support this GPU.

You're right I did mean to put "force GPU acceleration" lol. It just seemed weird to me that it borks the weather graph in the News&Weather app and causes it to force close. I've had it enabled for a while then I disabled it didn't really see any difference in most apps[games & everyday apps] I've tried.
Double Post
Yeah I just left it off and I never had any problems ... if there EVER occurs to be any lag or something in a graphic intense app I'll turn it on.
As long as there aren't any problems, I'll just leave it off, I don't think there is much benefit, if at all, for 99,9% of the apps
Try Facebook without gpu acceleration just scroll down and look at the frame rate its just not smooth. Enable gpu acceleration swipe Facebook off from task and do the same scrolling again.
By scrolling I mean. Flick your finger and let go.... difference is massive in smoothness . If you can't see it theres clearly something wrong with your eyes

Truthfully...it's not.

This rom when installed correctly blows stock out of the water. Add the Nova launcher..and tweak the settings...and you will see exactly what I mean.Use the latest TWRP..and wipe correctly...and you won't want to go back to stock...ever.
He has a new update coming soon...which will add even more to it.
No need to go full unroot if you have Triangle away & TWRP

No issues here with any of 3 different roms. What apps are you running or is it like this immediately after flashing? sounds like something is running in the background causing your problem. Is media scan running constantly? Need more info on what is going on in the background to diagnose.

Most custom roms are de-bloated already.

Maybe try to reduce the Animated Scale setting under Settings - Developer Options from 1x to 0.5x or below? Toggle GPU rendering setting in there as well.
I also agree that a lot is dependent on your launcher. Nova is good to compare too *only* if you optimize it's settings to set all to "Faster than light"

I'm on the newest version of CleanRom. I much prefer it to stock. There are a lot of features I can't live without. Still, the price you pay is with scrolling. It's jerky compared to stock, especially when you are slow scrolling. Fast scrolling is not an issue.
Yeah, I don't know what you talking about. I'm running Jedi X6.1.2 and I don't feel a performance difference, but I do have a lot of nice goodies stock doesn't have.
OP should make a video to show people his problem
I experience none of that with jedi or cleanrom

I know what he means. I also started a thread about jerky scrolling. Some people seem to have decent eyes they just dont realize or never seen a fluid scrolling capable samsung rom. My stock browser is buttery smooth even with heavy picture loaded wep pages. However tapatalk and facebook and some apps are super jerky. Even setting menu of phone is very jerky. Unbelievable. They are jerky when u scroll only with medium speed. If you scroll very slow or very fast its smooth.
This is very annoying for me. So I flashed every available rom and kernel and tried every rom/kernel combo. I think I found the solution.
Seems like The problem is caused by cpu governer + rom type. So I tried some stock roms that are very smooth and that are jerky.
I got the best scrolling with note2core kernel and ONLY IF you select iNTERACTIVE governer. Perseus and other kernels only have pegasusq governer. Once I made it interactive they all became super smooth.
If you are running perseus kernel or such u can also test this by selecting "performance" governer. It basically keeps your cpu in highest level. And your scrolling becomes buttery smooth.
It has something to do with cpu levels I guess. With pegasusq there is not much load to trigger higher cpu levels so it uses low levels.
I suggest you to try note2core with interactive governer.

the lag should be enough, i did it on my galaxy s3 i had one that seemed to have alot of micro lag......if they can see it they should replace it. Most likely they will ask you to show them the problem, tell them you have a friend with the note 2 and you dont see any of this on his phone and think that it must be a bad unit. they should just replace it if its within the alotted time. just keep complaining you didnt pay that much money for a device to be as laggy as a last years gen phone and so on blah blah blah.....they should give you a new one.
As this may pertain to samsungs internel hardware, i just wanna confirm if anyone on these launchers on this phone has experinces this little jitter lag when you scroll thru homescreens..seems as if when you swipe the screen stutters and doesnt move to the next one..also when u scroll fast thru homescreens it does this..if there is a fix please direct me to it..its so annoying when i cant find anyone talking about this.. Thanks
I used my friends phone on Apex and Nova and it didnt stutter at all.... and besides, its a dual core processor Snapdragon™ just powering a launcher, i dont think lags would occur. Even if they would, i find it minimal.
EDIT: my friend's phne is the intl version with the Exynos 4412 Quad so i dont know if it applies to ya. You could try flashing MPEngine™ 12SE because the script minimized lags on my phone clocked at 184-921MhZ
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
A stutter here and there isn't abnormal. If you are getting stuttering on almost every transition, that definitely isn't normal.
Assuming you are running stock, you might want to consider a custom ROM which tend to be smoother. You could also try just rooting and playing with your CPU clock settings.

Try changing the animation and transition speed. Lower the number, faster it is. Also, if that doesn't work you can try disabling hw overlays. All those are under Developer Options. Here are my settings on Paranoid Android, but i use the same settings for any ROM i run (i did not disable hw overlay, but there's the option)
I think it may be with the hardware..its more of lil stutters in transition pages than lag..havent seen samsung addresss it thou :/

What have you done/installed since you got your phone? My phone actually hasn't experienced any noticeable lag at all, not even once since opening the box. And I had three of them - all had zero lag. Of course, I still went and updated it and disabled some stock apps. It's getting better and better. The only issue is the speed at which this phone gets warm performing basic tasks like camera, email, internet. Even sometimes in my pocket with Sync turned off and Sound muted, the phone would get warm by itself. That's funny.

I installed action launcher, removed animations and thats about it. Right now I'm downloading the wicked rom to install, but I don't want to lose all of the samsung features such as, "smart scroll, s beam, multi-window, etc). Would you happen to know if the wicked v2 rom removes any of those?
im tired of the lag too.im on stock rooted with all the gimmics disable , my gf gs3 is alot faster. gallery takes about 2 sec just to open.
hopefully is fixed. had the htc one but battery life on it doesnt compare to gs4 .
If you don't want to be rooted to "kill the lag" go to recovery mode and factory reset and reboot. Do not touch or do anything with the phone for 5 minutes before setting up.
Im stock rooted, running Faux's kernel. I ALWAYS disable animations in Developer options....that alone eliminates much of the lag in any phone. Also, you can disable the S Voice connection to the home button.
Lastly if you want an incredibly ultra fast experience in scrolling and app drawer.... Install Nova...and make sure to make scroll speed "faster than light". You will then see how fast this phone can be when not slowed down by animations. The nice thing about Touchwiz, is that the settings and notification tray look fairly stock JB....so it matches great with Nova.
This S4 is FLYING....so friggin fast, zero lag, great battery life!
Try it out!
Cheers.

Thanks in fact i'm using perseus kernel, but i think it depend on which apps i'm using. On some apps i have no lag.
I also use pheonix rom, but if i want to eliminate these lags, i'll loose some battery life.
I think i'll buy zerolemon battery and put higher settings on the kernel. But i really need the settings for color on perseus kernel and i don't know if any other kernel use it?
If you're on Stock Rom then there'll be lag, in xda, in Tapatalk, when scrolling in my files and almost everywhere else. But since I moved to Android Revolution HD, almost 50% of those lag things are gone. Now when I scroll through Tapatalk, or in Twitter, it's just smooth as hell. Well not iOS or WP smooth, but for Android it's more than enough. Honestly I've never believed or seen a droid phone could perform this fluidly.
I sounded like a custom Rom fan, but let me tell you, I actually hate them, and always preferred stock ROMs, but this ARHD is something.

Lol. That is due to Mali's slower fill rate. And once you scroll through all of it, it doesn't do it anymore. Same in the browsers. You're less likely to see that on a power vr or adreno platform.

It has nothing to do with gpu rendering. You can replicate it in many browsers with it with out GPU rendering ticked. It can minor or major issues but I just haven't run into any lately, so for now it stays permanently ticked til I come across something elsemucked up.
