Looks broken, u probly got a refurbished unit that wasnt up to par or it was damaged in shipping.
Did you look at the screen in recovery mode and download mode? If u still see it there, its hardware. If not, its software.

The blue line on the screen is a tracer for what the phone sees that i touched in the affected area. What is happening is a strip along the middle of the screen that is completely unresponsive.

Get a lcd test app from the market see what that gives you, if its not responding to touch on part of the screen something could be wrong with the digitizer... if you're technically apt I would take the phone apart and make sure the digitizer cable is properly connected... or just send it back....

How can i tell the difference exactly? And i got the phone first half of August in 2010 if that helps in case they started the narrow flex much later.
Like it was stated opening up the phone is the only true method. I believe skinny for Nova and wide for Epson but I don't know if that is 100% correct 100% of the time.

I opened my phone and this is what i got.
Narrow Cable
Wide Cable
The digitizer seems like it only comes in one type, the wide/narrow distinction is for the screen itself I believe.

I just bought an EVO 4G on Craigslist as a gift and as soon as I got home (45 minutes later) and inside, I noticed a very weird problem with the screen:

What the heck is this? I didn't notice it outside (where the transaction took place) or in my car. I can't not see it now...
I don't understand what I'm supposed to be looking at

Is this just what EVO screens look like? My Inspire sure never looked like that!
That is a problem with some evo screens. Mine looks the same. Something to do with the internals under the screen causing the whitout spots.

Thank you. Did it develop over time or did it always look like that?
This is a common problem and believe it's referred to as light leaking or something along those lines. Anyway, mine has the exact same two spots as do a lot of other people. Nothing you can do about it though and it's really not that big of a deal.
Yeah thats very common on evo 4g lcds,I dont think it develops so you dont have to worry about it getting worst...I have the same prob.with new lcd replacement.

Hey guys what is this? Does it mean I'm stuck in diag mode?
It appears after like every reboot or battery reinsert.
Thanks

Does the phone work at all, or is that screen all it boots to when you power it on?
I tried searching a couple of days ago for an answer after you posted this thread, but didn't come up with anything. Never seen that screen before or heard of this issue, so I'm interested to know what the deal is.
No, it does still function, and pressing the home button after boot up makes it go away, but while using maps it just popped up out of nowhere.

Weird.
If I remember correctly that might be diagnostic mode disable it with espt commands

Yes and no. The IMEI and serial number match, so definitely something is still the same.
Phone's menu shows SGH-T989.
However, that's not the case when I hook up via USB.

Does anyone know how to separate the Silver plated part from the black part of the spen? The silver part is not aligned with the black part and it always get stuck in the phone and needs to be pulled out really hard. I tried with other spen on my phone and its fine so i know its because of it not being aligned.
Pics?

Well I'm sitting here looking at my spen and, ,it has the same size gap between the silver top piece and the base.
The only suggestion I can give you is call Samsung and ask them about it...I'm sure they would be pleased to send u a new one..not very expensive for them. Just my suggestion.
