Take whatever ROM.zip that has the apk you want and extract it. Then navigate to system/app and find the apk you want. Then you can drop it on the the sdcard of you device and with root explorer put the apk into system/app and then set the permissions to rw-r-r. Hope this helps you out dude.

[Q] Trying to take messaging apk and htc keyboard from virtuous fusion rom

I tried to take the messaging apk and the htc.ime apks from the virtuous fusion rom because i want to use them on Insertcoin_vision rom running 2.1 sense+ 3.0.Is there anyway that i can do this ??
Put the rom.zip on you computer and unzip it. Then look in system/app for the apk's.
Now there is a good chance that these apk's won't actually work on the insertcoin rom. For a lot of sense apps to work they are dependent an the sense framework and this varys from version to version.
Easiest way to then install is adb if you know who to use adb, cool. If not I'm not going to explain here and you will need to follow the instructions bellow
you won't be able to install like a normal app you would have to place then in the /system/app folder and make sure the permissions were set correctly. The best way to do this is using root explorer or something similar. Place the apk on your sd card and copy them to the folder. If your using root explorer once you have copied them th the correct folder press and hold on the app to bring up them menu and select permissions. The permissions need to be the same as the other apps in the /system/app folder. You will need to move the original apk before copy the new ones in make sure you put these on your sdcard.
Then reboot, but be prepared for the apps not to work.

Did you ever extract the keyboard from Virtuous Fusion? I am interested in it as well.
I have never used Virtuous ROMs but I am curious, what is special about the keyboard? Is it not just the stock HTC keyboard?

Replacing apks in ROM zip.

Just wondering if it's possible for me to overwrite certain APKs in a ROM zip with custom ones that I've found.
Specifically, the inverted/blue MMS and unlocked Exchange Email APKs to put into my AOKP zip. I'd like to be able to do this instead of having to do it post-flash.
Thanks.
Yes you can,i make custom roms with every rom like this,it really easy.Just use 7zip and replace them, just make sure they don't have different names,to be sure i usually delete old apk's first and then copy new ones instead of replacing them.
This what i do:
1 Add or replace apk's in system/app folder and delete any apk's i dont want, this improves speed and battery life.
2 Go to system/media folder and delete or replace any unwanted ringtones and delete system sounds. You can also replace BootAnimation, zip in there for custom boot animation.
3 (Optional) go to /system/frameworks folder and replace framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk to use a custom theme, just make sure its compatible with the rom yore using.Oh,and replace SystemUI.apk in system/app folder.
And BOOM you have your own custom rom ready to flash. If you need any more tips just ask.

Resign them? You don't need to resigh them, just add the apk and that's it.
NOTE:
If you modify some apk files they will no longer install from /system/app folder and you need to resign them, but if you did not modify apk file you're good.
While rarely(about 5% of time) some apk's will not install from system/app folder.
Strange thing is that if apk wont install,if you modify it and not sign it it will install,it will install unsigned but will not install signed!
So try it,if signed apk wont install just unsign it(mod it with 7zip) and see if it does and vice versa.
But 95% of apk's will work in system/app folder with no signing or unsigning needed.Just place the apk in system/app folder and you're good.

Its nice but not really needed, plus devs can name same apk's with different names.I ptefer seven zip because it even tells you which apps devs added themselfs to the ROM.

[Q] accidentally deleted clock after root (4.04)

I rooted my phone following this thread for 4.04 successfully, but I accidentally deleted the system clock app while trying to get rid of the bloatwares. (I think it's called clock 1.0 in root uninstaller)
I checked the system/app folder and I have a file called "clockPackage, odex", but I don't have the "clockPackage.apk" file. Is that the file I need to get the default system clock app back? If yes can someone please upload it for me? otherwise what do I need to do to get it back?
Thanks in advance!
Just open up the rom you have wherever its saved extract the clock.apk. Then copy and paste it to system/app with the same permissions as the other apps r-w-r-r or 644 and root. Then reboot when it boots back up go to app drawer and you will see the clock app again.

thanks for the reply! sorry for my noobiness, but which file is the rom and how do I extract it? I looked through the unzipped files I used for rooting and didn't find any apk files
If you are rooted get root explorer to open the zipped rom then extract it to sd card then copy and paste like i said.

MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP FIRST OR YOU ARE A NOOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Download rootbrowser lite from the market. Now if you have the cm zip on your phone, navigate to it, open it, go to system, then go to app and find gallery2.apk. Click on it and rootbrowser will give you 2 options, click extract. This will extract just the apk to /storage/sdcard/0/extracted (its a folder now). Great now to add it to whatever rom you are running right now:
If you are trying to install the camera app on any touchwiz based rom it will fail, don't try, it will fail. If you are installing it on another AOSP follow the following directions:
1. With rootbrowser go to /system/app in the root directory of your phone. Then find your gallery2.apk and copy it and paste it somewhere on your sdcard (not in the extracted folder though) where you can find it in case something goes wrong.
2. After storing your old camera apk somewhere safe, go to the extracted folder on your sdcard and copy the gallery2.apk you extracted from cm.
3. Paste the cm gallery2.apk in the system/app root folder on your phone. It should ask if you want to overwrite a file (it will be overwriting your old gallery2.apk) just hit yes.
4. Reboot and hope for the best.
5. If it doesn't work try either clearing dalvic cache, cache or fixing permissions from your recovery
6. If all else still fails it means that the cm camera simply won't work with the rom you are using. This is why you made a backup. Simply find where you put your backup apk and copy it back to system/app folder and overwrite the cm one.
Once again you should have made an nandroid backup from your recovery before doing this so worst comes to worst you can always restore to that if you screw up.
If I have helped, please slap that thanks button

Rom flashable .zip not working properly

I made a rom with bloat removed and some of my useful app into /system/app, after flashing the zip phone boots to OS but
i dont see my apps installed into system, also the airplane mode toggle is also missing from power menu.
I trying to flash stock GB rom.
when i look into system/app using root explorer i can see my apps there with proper permission but they are not installed
What can be the problem?
Are the APK files well-signed ?
Try to install them manually directly from the /system/app folder.
Hope I helped.
Cheers.
