No GSM signal and/or no mobile data signal?
PS: the bar is grey if you're not connected to Google's servers. When you are, it turns blue.

usually the bar contains an "x". rarely there is no "x". never had a blue bar.e
when i activate mobile data, the bar gets blue or grey and there is signal but still turns into "x" when i put my phone into sleep.

Sounds to me either the radio is incompatible with your carrier or some HW malfunction. I'd go back to the store and ask for some service.
Are you sure that your SIM is good? If so, do you have your APN configured properly?
yes i changed the sim-cards from my girlfriend and her phone. mine did work at her phone, her card did not at mine.
I had the same issue. No signal. I got a replacement and the replacement works just fine. I think its a faulty radio.

where did you buy the phone from? if its stolen it wont have any signal
Had the same issue (although not that "hard") and sent it in for repair. They replaced the motherboard, and now the reception is just fine on all networks I tried.

Hey guys I've got the GSM version and every now and then my signal bars turn grey, this is with full signal even showing 3g buts its grey and won't call out or load data. I'm not a twit and understand that phones loose signal its just strange it comes back randomly also. Very annoying.
I'm on 4.0.1 Google build anyone else get this issue?

grey full bars
i dont have a technical response to this question other than i only notice this during times of transition between either booting up the phone or switching to wifi on or off equally.
The phone usually checks to sync when it has been on standby and you then hit the power button. If you theoretically switch between wifi and 3g/4g during this time it would force a transition which could yield a situation as you describe.
This happens to me too sometimes. What network do you have?

You have to find out the true reason why your connection is being interrupted. The bars going grey instead of blue is just reflecting the fact that your connection isn't persistent and you don't have a full sync with Google.
Blue bars = connection to Google servers
Grey bars = no Google servers

When you open the browser does it say that there is no network coverage and you have to turn off the airplane mode?
I was having the same issue with 4.0.1, I was getting disconnect from the mobile network almost every 2-3 hours and the only way to get online again was to do a reset. But now with 4.0.2 everything seems to work fine.
My carrier (Simyo in Spain) is a "virtual operator" (MVNO), so I'm thinking that the issue was somehow related with the “data was disconnected due to roaming” bug in 4.0.1.
Been having same issues on Wifi and 3g, causes huge issues with push gmail
Edit: I removed dns changer from my phone, and seems to be helping

Thanks Menek, I am still on 4.0.1. Hopefully soon I will get an OTA update.
Hello,
This thread kind of died down but it is very important. Here is the issue logged by other users with Google. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22503
Has anybody managed to find a fix?
I called Samsung yesterday and they advised me to return the phone. I don't feel like being without a phone for 2 weeks. Besides it is sort of proven that it is a Rom issue (am I correct?). What do you say guys, shall i send it to Samsung or wait for an update from Google? The problem doesn't happen very often, every once in a while. I suppose this is why the battery runs out pretty quickly as it tries to connect to a network too often. And when it doesn't establish connection it goes to Airplane mode.
Any more comments on this issue?
went to use google wallet at the same petco that I have used several times before, but this time no blue bars just four gray bars and google wallet no worky?
running stock as can be
Grey bars mean your phone isn't connected to the google servers. A quick fix is to open the google talk app and it should re-connect.
I get greyed out bars (actually their greyed out as I typed this) with no lines in the signal either to represent bar numbers.
And yea..I don't use Google Wallet, stock phone, on Verizon.
Phone blows balls for getting and keeping a signal, first time on Verizon service and I HOPE to god this isn't how their service really is because after all the fame their the best this phone is leading me to believe otherwise.
Grey bars are not the cause of the problem, they're the reaction to your signal not being proper and sync not being up to date.

Proper? What does that mean in English? Starting to wonder if my phone is defective or its this software in the radio or possibly even hardware.

If your connection is dropping then it surely isn't going to keep synced to Google properly.... and then Google Wallet isn't going to work.
I dunno what your particular problem is, or whats wrong on your device. I'm just explaining that the grey bars are just a result of your phone not being connected continuously, not the problem that is creating your disconnection.

A link to the definition of proper..hm okay not a dumbass, I know what the meaning of the word is..what I asked for was what you were getting at and the problem.
All you had to say was their greyed out because the phone is not keeping a signal, but if that's the case do I have a signal when its greyed out, or just that the phone is not keeping a signal? I said I called my voicemail and got through but was a bit choppy. Not sure what I'm getting for data, nothing is displayed for that.

Do you always cuss at people who take time out of their day to help others?
Thread moved to Q&A.
logging into google talk did not change anything other than not being able to use google talk as well, for purposes of discussion, the location I was at had 4 blue bars, prior to moving and staying at 4 gray bars.
and today at the market
had gray wifi, how is that possible?
I thought gray == dormant data connection?
Does anyone have gray bars only on 3G? I've had gray bars with no 3G symbol all day yesterday. Tried the google talk thing, doesnt work. Browser wont work either.
I thought it was a Verizon network outage but 4G works just fine (blue bars)
understand why 3g/4g does not connect
but why would you have gray wifi?

Easy. Google's servers are down but your wifi or cell connection is still working. So therefore gray bars due to no google but data still up. Happens once in a while.
Green = google server connected
Gray = no google server, but doesnt mean the whole web is down
Gray bars means no connection to Google's servers.
I have no icon at the top of the screen to indicate 3G, H or H+ and am not sure if that is normal. Is it?
Icons not licons obviously.
It's not normal.
Try a reboot or it could be your network

I get these icons no problem. I have only had to reboot it once since I got it on Thursday due the OTA update. Can't fault this phone at the moment. Reading all the so called bugs but I don't seem to be having them.

You dont see the icons when your connected to WIFI as all data will go through wifi and so whether your network at that time is 3g/H is irrelevant.
Steve
For some reason, my T-Mobile GS3 has grey signal bars whether on Wi-Fi or 3g or HSPA+. I can access the internet at high speeds and sync with my Gmail but the icons never turn white for some reason. I've wiped my phone, installed a custom rom and fixed permissions but nothing seems to do anything. Anyone have a solution? Thanks!
I do believe that is how its supposed to be. But I could be wrong. That's how mine was before I put a theme over mine

I have the ATT version and yours looks exactly like mine, it's the way it was when it came out of the box for me so I'm thinking it's supposed to be that way.
Ah okay. Thanks guys!
I believe that's the way it is as they always have been grey for me when I have a signal. If the signal is a bit weak, the taller bar(s) turn dark grey.
You may need to wait for something like CM9 for a completely different framework.
That's the way it is.
Dark gray bad/no signal
Light gray good signal.

internet/ texting
I currrently new with rooting andriods. However I rooted my galaxy s3 tmobile perfectly and been using it for a month a so using the cm10. recently though my wifi , and even my 4g internet bar has greyed out and i cant access any internet even though it shows signal. Another problem that recently came up is whenever i text, my text wont show up in the conversion box. what can i do to fix these promblems?
I have tried updating the nightly build to see if i could get rid of the problem but so far it a no good. ( currnetly on cm-10.1-20130216-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip)
Ever since getting my phone, I've had problems with data dropping entirely every so often, but also constantly switching between 3G and H (my Sensation was always rock-solid on H as this is a good coverage area).
Yesterday I was testing the Spotify radio app which streams music. That was the first time I used the data so heavily and the data connection was dropping literally about once a minute. It seems heavy data use causes the connection to drop. Wifi is perfect with no issues at all.
A) Has anyone else run into this and figured out a solution?
B) Is this T-Mobile blocking my data for some reason? Maybe they didn't like me switching to an unlocked phone? Is there a number to dial that will reinitialize my account/connection? Or perhaps another APN I can try?
C) Or does this sound like a radio issue? Or a ROM issue?
You can look at your connection information if you open the phone dialer and enter in #*#*4636#*#*. Then press on phone information and at the very bottom you can force "H" only, so it won't switch back and forth between 3g.
You can also turn off/on the radio on the same page. Plus there's a load of connection information at the top.
This was a huge thing for Toro users, it seems.
Haven't heard as much on the Maguro side.
But if your situation is the same, it's a hardware issue.
If you flash stock (and maybe try swapping in a new SIM card) and it still does it...get it exchanged.
The switching between 3G and H is by design. T-mobile phones don't show the change but it's happening. (Marketing)
As far as data drops go. Is it completely dropping or just buffering?

100% dropping. All bars completely disappear and it's just left with a black blank triangle of no bars, even when I'm in an area of full 4-bar coverage. After a long while the bars reappear, and then after a while, the 3G/H comes back and data is reactivated.
And then it happens again a few minutes later.

What are you running and which radio?
There was a data drop issue on 4.0.4. I haven't had the problem since moving to JB

The radio you are running is XXKK1 which is a very old radio. Perhaps one of the first.
You should update to 4.1.1 and flash the newest XXLF1 radio.
Hopefully that will solve your issues.

Ah I see. Is it feasible that these issues could be caused by an old radio?
Anyway, does this 4.1.1 ROM and radio look like the right one to flash? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737849
Its definitely possible. Could be a mismatched ril issue too.
Yep that ROM and radio are correct.
