Hello, I'm having a strange issue with my GS4. I have rooted it and flashed a couple different custom ROMS on it, but I decided to go back to stock so that I could get the 4.3 OTA. I did the triangle away and then flashed stock 4.2.2 software through odin. However, when I go to search for the update, I get the following message " Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.". In fact my device status still says CUSTOM under device status in about phone. Could this be because the flash counter is still tripped, or did I flash a bad stock firmware download?
Also strange: I've noticed that the sound my phone makes when I lock it is not the stock sound, it's still the lock sound from wicked V8 Rom.
Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just my personal experience, but whenever using Odin to revert back to stock, it always works right if I flash a non-TouchWiz ROM via TWRM/CWM THEN use Odin to revert. When reverting via Odin from a modified TW something always tends to stick around.
As far as returning to official status, you should be able to use Triangle-away on a rooted/stock firmware then temporarily unroot to install the OTA. Just a question though; why do the official OTA which introduces the Knox counter? There are CWM-flashable pre-rooted, non-Knox 4.3 TMO TW ROMs out already...

Thanks for quick response. So you're saying I should root, then flash a stock aosp or gpe rom, and flash stock rom from there? I actually did have a gpe rom on my phone the last time I went back to stock, but I had wicked V8 first and went back to stock in between.
Another question would be if that small thing like the lock sound would be what's making me not be able to get the ota, or is it because the flash counter is tripped still and it's saying that I'm still custom?
noob question sorry, how do you temporarily unroot?

The reason you can't OTA is because your flash counter is still tripped. If it says you are on a custom firmware then you won't be able to update via OTA.
No need to re-root. Just use Odin to flash a custom recovery. Once there, I'd flash whatever non-TouchWiz ROM you have on-hand... Wicked, the TouchWiz Infamous ROMs, GPe ROMs (maybe, I don't know about these) I would avoid. If you already have CM10.x-11, ParanoidAndroid, Liquid, etc readily available, say, on your SD card I'd flash one of them. No need to flash the gapps, kernel, whatever, just the base ROM itself. Once that's done, use Odin to flash the Stock MDL .tar. After that, I'd say flash CF-Auto Root, run Triangle Away, then in the superuser App there should be an option to unroot (or temporarily unroot). Once that's done, you should be able to update via OTA.

Ah, okay. I think I understand that, I'll give that a try. Thanks for all your help.
Okay, so I tried doing everything you told me to do and got some weird results and thought I'd post them for anyone else that may run into this problem.
I flashed a custom recovery through Odin, then flashed the AOSP Liquid Rom like you said. I then flashe the stock MD5 file through Odin and let it do its thing. Once it was done, that's where the weird stuff started. The phone rebooted as it should, but then it got hung on the white T-mobile screen. It just sat there for a very long time. Now I've done this enough times to know when its taking too long and there's a problem.
So I did something that I know probably shouldn't have done and I held down the power button until it turned off. I then tried to boot it again to no avail, same thing.
After this I booted into the stock recovery and decided to do a factory data reset from there. (I was pretty sure there was nothing wrong with the stock Rom as I've used it before; there must have been something still there from the Liquid Rom causing problems.) When I rebooted from the recovery this way, it finally booted right up.
I now thought that I needed to flash CF-AutoRoot and then triangle away, but no, for some strange reason my device status now reads OFFICIAL!
I searched for the update and it is now in the process of downloading.
(Strangely enough though, the lock sound from wicked V8, is STILL there. I don't get it and I don't even want to know anymore.)
Sorry for the super long post, but I thought that if anyone else was having my same problem they should see this.
Thanks again for all your help and I hope you'e having a great Thanksgiving.
I hope someone can help with a dilemma I have.
I need to flash back to stock rom and do a factory reset on my AT&T SGIII - this I know how to do . However, what I don't know is if the links I've found for tar files for a stock restore (like the one posted here)are for the ice cream sandwich version that launched with the phone, or the newer jelly bean version.
If it is the older version, once I'm done restoring it back to stock and factory settings, will I get an option to update to jelly bean thru AT&T?
Or do I need to find a stock AT&T jelly bean file to flash? If so, where do I find that?
any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Did you update your phone to AT&T 4.3 stock rom via an OTA update? If you did, do not flash any rom that includes an older bootloader as the flash will brick your phone.

No. Ever since going to the Sonic FreeGS3 Resurrection rom, I have been on the 4.1.1 version. I've never been to a more current version than that since that was the last version update for this rom and I liked it just fine.
Even though I'm not wild about having to return to stock, I am at least excited about (hopefully) being able to go up to the latest version released by AT&T. But I wasn't sure if I need to flash a stock 4.3 version AT&T rom (or even where to find that) or if I could just flash the original released stock rom and then be prompted with OTA updates to go to the newer versions.
Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated.
The latest version of the AT&T ROM is 4.3 which can be done via an OTA update or Kies from a stock 4.1.1 AT&T ROM.
Any reason you need to return to stock? Personally, I would not go near 4.3 as it's not required to install KK ROMS and, once on 4.3, rooting, etc. becomes more complicated.

I have to for work. That's the only reason I'm going back to a stock rom. Plus I want to trade my phone in after a few more months once my contract is up.
I have an ATT S3 SGH-I747. Some time ago I flashed the leaked 4.3 rooted with no KNOX.
No problems with it, but I want to get back to stock to get OTA updates in the future.
So far, it looks like I have to:
1-Run triangle away to reset counter
2-Flash the stock ROM.
3-Factory reset.
Is this good enough? Some extra step I have to do because of the insecure kernel I have?
I've been doing a lot of research and I'm still afraid to brick my phone if I try to do it.
If the above process is OK, which ROM should I flash? Just the original that came with the phone? I believe it was 4.0.4. Can I flash something newer?
I'll appreciate any help.

Please check your phone's settings for your firmware version and let's know what you have under Android version, baseband version and build number. I expect the Android version should be 4.3, baseband I747UCUEMJB and build number ...MJ2 but please confirm all the same.
If the above details are correct, then you should be able to safely Odin to ver. 4.1.1. You do not need to run Triangle Away to flash a stock ROM but the other 2 steps are spot on. Once you are on stock 4.1.1, you can get an OTA update to the latest version. I would also advise you free unlock your phone before upgrading, if not done already, as you can only free unlock on 4.1.1. Before proceeding, however, please check and confirm your phone's current firmware settings. A different route may be required if you already have the 4.3 MJB bootloader.

Thanks a lot for your help.
This is what I have:
Android Version: 4.3
Baseband Version: I747UCUEMJ2
Kernel Version: 3.0.31-1804024
Build Number: JSS15J.I747UCUEMJ2
SELinux status: permissive
That's all I can see in "About Device" I hope that's what you need.
You say no need to run Triangle Away. I still would like to reset the counter. Any risk in doing it?

Yes, that's precisely the info I need. You don't have the 4.3 bootloader yet so you should be able to safely Odin back to 4.1.1. There is no risk in resetting your flash counter. Usually, however, flashing a complete stock image should reset the flash counter. The only thing that can't be reset, once tripped, is your warranty bit. If your flash counter doesn't reset to zero, you can run Triangle Away. You can go to sammobile.com and download the Odin flashable 4.1.1 file (i747UCDLK3). Also download Odin from the thread below and then use it flash the UCDLK3 tar file. When you've successfully done this, please remember to free unlock your phone (if not done already) prior to taking any OTA updates.

Just an update. I run Triangle away and now the counter is on zero and the status is showing "official". I didn't expect that. I'm thinking in just wait until the 4.4 update is released (assuming it does) and take my chances with Kies to make it.
If it does not work I still have the option to flash to 4.1 and do it the other way.
I believe it won't update with the regular OTA in it's current state because I have CWM.

OTA is hardly likely to work if the phone is not in (complete) stock state. The good thing, however, is that when Kit-Kat (and other future upgrade) is eventually rolled out for this device, the good guys in the development community can be trusted to ensure a manual update option is available.
My galaxy siii was rooted before kitkat was out, and I have been using it until now and have not yet update to KitKat yet because AT&T is not part of it any more.
How do I get KitKat on my phone? Do I have to unroot the phone and put it back into AT&T mode to download or what should I do?
this might help.

I might add to this...if you removed any stock carrier or vendor apps from 4.3 while being rooted...you'll have to restore them via a Titamium Backup or some other way or the OTA update will not install properly. (I realized that the OTA update from 4.3 to 4.4.2 will patch these apps to update them to 4.4.2 compatibility)
If you can't do that or if its unreasonable to do that based on the way the phone was modified while rooted...I suggest flashing the stock 4.3 rom via Odin and then take the OTA.
Id recommend flashing the 4.3 firmware via Odin to begin with. Its starting to seem like a lot of people who even just have to unroot are having problems with the ota. I think Odin flashing stock 4.3 will give the best chance of a successful update.

I am having this issue. I rooted on 4.3 and removed Google books and newsstand. I then uprooted and did a factory reset , so everything in download mode says "official" but the apps were still missing so I downloaded them from the play store. My question is will this let me get the OTA now or do I have to push the apps to the /system directory somehow? Also if I flash the 4.3 ODIN tar file, will it trip my warranty bit? It's at 0 right now and want to keep it that way until my warranty is up.
The firmware shouldn't trip the bit, but I can't promise that. Im sure its confirmed one way or the other in its thread though.
As for those apps, they'd have to be system apps, so just installing normally won't help. More importantly though, they would also need to be the same version that was originally built into the firmware. The apps you mentioned have seen many updates and using the current versions will not work.
I got the phone 2 weeks ago and it came with 4.3 installed on it. Would I be able to use the current version and just push them to /system/app with titanium backup? I am trying to get the OTA without tripping any warranty or security measures.
I've got a Lollipop 5.1 ROM installed but want to go back to the stock NK2 Touchwiz ROM. When I flash the ROM zip in CWM the phone isn't able to boot into the OS - it tries to, fails, and then automatically boots back into recovery.
You must do a factory reset and use odin to flash the full firmware NK2 in order to go back to kitkat.

I see. So in general, to downgrade you want to use Odin. To upgrade you can flash directly within CWM?

Downgrading involves full firmware thus needing odin to install the full firmware.
CWM basically flashes just a rom or update and doesnt install full firmware which would be needed to downgrade, upgrade or switch operating system.

Wow, I think I'm officially done with third party unofficial ROMs.
Now I'm reading that its impossible to downgrade even with Odin due to KNOX?

no you can no longer downgrade and will have the knox bootloader"

Yes, but the knox thing is only an issue if your phone is under a year old and under Samsung warranty, in which case if Samsung gets your phone for some warranty related work they can technically refuse or charge you for repairs.
The newer knox firmwares are improved over the older version, better call quality, faster processing, better memory management, so it's not a bad thing to upgrade your firmware, it's actually beneficial.
I knoxed out 30 minutes after I had phone out of the box when I got my S4, made sure there where no issues everything worked the way it was supposed to and rooted and got rid of the bloatware.
And still have original phone, no returns or exchanges.
