[Introduction] New GNex user - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Good afternoon, everyone. I've been an XDA member for a while but today switched from another phone to the VZW GNex. I'm looking forward to putting this gorgeous device to the test to see what it can do and eventually try some of the killer ROMs our talented devs have built.

Welcome! You will find many knowledgeable and courteous members here with some even willing to help fix problems and issues. Hopefully you enjoy your time here and your fantastic choice in phones.

Welcome, jellybean is the way you want to go for the ROMs. ICS is as far as I am concerned outdated. Vicious, xenon HD, and aokp are great starters and I would reccomend faux kernel for the fastest and most stable kernel

I just got my Gnex yesterday and I already love it compared to my gs2. But I've noticed a lot of threads and posts on people that just got it in the last few days, crazy.

Can't go wrong with CNA, AOKP, JBSourcery or the CM10 variants. Throw in Franco or Trinity kernel and you're gold

Second AOKP and Franco kernel.

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice. I'm running BAMF's Paradigm right now but I want to test drive others. I've heard about the Franco kernel but I don't know how to flash kernels yet. After I do some research I'll look into that, but at least in the meantime I can try the ROMs.

Hey there, you flash kernels the same way you flash ROMS. Just get a .zip and install it through recovery.

honestly i think your rom will be the best and most awesome rom ever. Head over here to build it.
I have used ARHD and was very happy with it. I just switched to the Gummy ROM this afternoon and I like it as well.
The problem is no one has enough info from you. Different ROMs have different features. Because of this, "best" is largely opinionated. Read through the [ROM] threads in the development section. Try and get a feel for what features you want then ask around for which one people like the most.
My experience:
ARHD: Pretty much 4.0.2 stock. No visual changes, just performance enhancements. Nice and smooth ROM
Gummy: based on leaked 4.0.3 with major enhancements. Toggles in the drop down menu. Ability to over clock and under volt. I have not ran it very long, but so far really like it.
Hope this helps.

I was on ARHD 2.1.2 for a little while. It ran much better than stock. Then I tried bigxie's ROM and it felt much smoother than ARHD. I'm currently using it with Franco's kernel. While benchmarks don't really tell the whole story, bigxie's ROM with Franco's kernel is quite fast. I get over 3000 on Quandrant (vs 2200 stock, although I think it's an optimization issue) and over 6300 on Antutu (vs. 6000). I like it b/c it looks stock, but adds a few conveniences, like having the power widget in the dropdown notification menu for easy toggling.
From the research I have done AOKP seems to be a winner...I have no experience with it as Im waiting for the price on the gnex to come down before I pull the trigger. But its a very popular among the members I know who have switched to the gnex.
I've always know what AOSP is but what is AOKP. I hear that alot.

Score one for the fellow Fascinate owner! If he can find one of the best ROMs available on the Gnex without even having one, the answer should be even more obvious to Gnex owners. I use the Toro version of AOKP myself and can confirm droidstyle's conclusion
Terminators run on Android
AOKP is simply the best one
Try the Milestone 2, its great!
Kang milestone 2, Franco kernel oc 1.35
Best I have used.
7000 antu score
120k browser mark.
Stable no issues great battery life.
Can't complain

Using GummyNex and franco's kernel. Best combo I have tested so far.
I recommend AOKP as well Go to rootzwiki and get the latest build

Android Revolution HD!!! great battery life, super smooth, but completely stock look - no bells and whistles
AOKP. Awesome extras, great battery life with Franco's kernel, and super stable.

It's tough to say what is the 'best ROM' as different users want different things from a ROM, but personally, I really rate Bigxie and AOKP.
They are the only two ROMs I'd recommend for GSM Nexus.
Regards.

New to Gnex coming from gs2.what ROM?

My nexus is coming in today. Cant wait just wondering whats the best roms out and themes/ mods? Thanks

Rooted stock for me, love the ICS look and how smooth it runs without needing much TLC.
Of course if you do ROM it up, go with AOKP, CM9, or Liquid. Those are the 3 best out there right now (At least on the CDMA side of things).
GummyNex & AOKP are the most customizable and therefore my favorites.
Franco Kernels get alot of love and are definately worth looking into.
I just came from a GS2 and am running AOKP. I flashed CM9 but quickly switched back because AOKP was more customizable.

Brand New To GNexus...Best ROM/Kernel Combo?

I was looking at the CM9 Nightly with Trinity kernel or stock IMM76I with Trinity kernel (if it works together...waiting for a reply).
I literally haven't used the phone yet besides speed test and then rooting/unlocking/custom recovery so....just curious to hear opinions
Aokp rom and James bond 3.1 kernel. They will give you stability, performance and fantastic battery life.

I had read that AOKP is extremely buggy still....
I know even on the Kindle Fire it is as well.
Imnuts butternutz. Seriously. Lacks customization. But its smoothest I've come across
Not buggy at all

BAMF hands down with its stock kernal
We need a rule for 'best rom/kernel' posts. There is no such thing and there never will be.
Literally like asking, "whose the best comedian?" or "What's the best type of fruit?"
Its all subjective. Just read the description of each rom/kernel and determine which one is the best for your personal needs.
It's pretty to switch up rom/kernel combinations, especially when you first get your phone.
Try GummyNex and Franco kernel.
Also, I highly recommend you stay away from AOKP. Alot of the posts about "this phones laggy etc etc" keep coming from people who are running AOKP. Just avoid it, maybe dab in it.
CM9 is pretty good for me too with franco.
I think the best is liquid smooth and franco

Have you thought about paranoid android? I run it with james bond kernal.. its built upon cm9.. hacked nova/market.. its a tablet hybrid. That means it gives you the function of a tablet while still maintaining the aesthetics of a phone.. its really a great rom. Its in its early stages but is still one of a kind. Check it out in either the cdma or GSM section..
I posted a screen shot of it.

Stock ftw.
teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. teach a man to fastboot, and you create competency. and less threads on xda.
You should try black ice with lean kernel - great battery life, nice theme and smooth. I personally had random reboots with liquidsmooth and aokp but otherwise they were great roms.
I ran stock with Trinity kernel for a few hours then flashed Liquid 1.35 with Trinity and have been using it since. Really smooth and fast. Battery seems good thus far. Really enjoying it.
Coming from N1 as a ROM whore, so to speak, I'm sure I'll end up trying every which one.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hey redrum! Nice seeing you here!
I'm not much for changing ROMs on this phone yet since I don't feel there aren't many worth using. I'd like something more reliable than a nightly. I think you remember I did say many times I am no fan of nightlies when I had the N1
The best combo I've tried so far is either LiquidSmooth plus Leankernel or CM9 + franco (or stock cm) kernel. I don't think AOKP is all that fast.
Right now, though, I run stock everything besides CWM. Still unlocked bootloader and rooted, though. Gosh, I miss 4EXT recovery
Ive had mine for a month now and have been running cm 9 the whole time......mainly used franco....which was great...tried glados which didnt like my phone much.....switched to trinity recently....clear winner is trinity...for me. Easily the best performer.....and battery life has been better so far

Best ROM/Kernel combos
ROMS: AOKP & GummyNex
Kernels: Lean Kernel & Franco Kernels
Silky smooth Buttery Blazin' Fastness
Tons of customization

Yeah, so far I'm highly enjoying Liquid with Trinity. I was going to run stock with Trinity but I just couldn't resist lol.
I'm hoping Max brings 4EXT Touch to the GNexus as well. I posted in his thread in the N1 section. Would love that recovery here.

Best ROM right now?

Hi everyone, just a simple question. I am looking for the best overall ICS rom for the T989 right now. Is it worth flashing now or should I wait for Jelly Bean rom or any other rom? Thanks for the help everyone.

I'm using Darkside Evolution 3 v7 ICS rom and it works flawlessly. Best ICS rom I've ever used.

So far Aokp is my DD right now I like to the stock feeling of ICS and not touchwiz

Ah dissenting opinions! So there is no de facto rom?
That's like asking what the best car is. Its subjective.

Let the flashing begin...
Personally, I've stuck with Darkside Evolution 3 (v7) since its release. Although it looks very stock, it's very stable with an amazing kernel and battery life.
AOKP and cm9 are amazing (I'll be flashing cm9 again once we get our release candidate).
AOKP feels like cm based ROM with a little more to offer but with that being said, neither feel as stable as a stock based ROM for our phones at the present time.
You'll always get a biased opinion so I'd suggest flashing some of the more popular roms by checking each thread and good luck buddy!

I've been wondering the same. Reading through the forums, I determined Darkside Evolution 3 (v7) was the most popular. It took a few flashes before I was able to get it working right on my phone, but it runs similar to stock. The only way you'll be able to tell if you like it is if you give it a try.
aokp..... more tweaks.... less bloats, stable, fast.

I'm gonna say AOKP. I've tried all of the aforementioned ROMs and I have settled on AOKP because of the amazing battery life, customization and the AOSP theme it comes with. AOKP has also become very stable as of recently, rivaling the stability of Darkside. I used to run Darkside when it first came out, but now I can't get over the very stock feel/look. If you enjoy the tweaking, I would suggest AOKP. If not, then go with Darkside. If you want something in the middle, go with CM.
+1 on AOKP and link is in the sig. Darkside is also a great ROM just depends on your preference of touchwiz or stock. Both are the top ROMs imo.
Either AOKP or anything DARKSIDE.

I find it funny anytime I see one of these threads and find it even funnier when I see how many people answer. Its probably easier to say what not to use....LOL
Lets be honest thousands of people use this forum and if only 20 actually answer this thread I am quite sure all of the dozen or so roms will be mentioned... This question is like mentioned earlier is subjective and no way can you find a definitive answer in here....
I hate stock but there are some advantages to it, I love CM9 but also enjoy some of the tweaks of AOKP... I just load them all up get them to how I like it and nandroid them all... Problem solved
OP good luck but instead of reading our crazy posts get to flashing
AOKP
I am on AOKP Milestone 6. Was gonna try Darkside, but liked aokp and dont see any reason to switch.
There are few things that will not work with AOKP.
1) WIFI calling
2) Audio out via the car dock.
If those are not issues, try it out.

A Couple Questions From A New GNexus Owner

Hey Guys! Coming here from my SGS II actually haha. I just like the feel of this phone better!
So I had a few questions to start off with.
This one is solely based on whoever may be reading this's opinion. Which kernel do you feel atm gives you a fair balance of smooth performance and good battery life (and hopefully no heat issues).
The second question is kind of two questions. Does the Toroplus get CM10 nightly's yet? It seems that theres alot of kang's with cherry picks which i guess are coming from toro? And does anyone know if pete plans to give us toroplus users some JB bugless-beast awesomeness?
Thanks for taking the time to read

Hey guys! I sure do appreciate the responses! This seems like a super nice group of people here . If anyone has any other suggestions ill take em and thanks again!!
Is customization what you want? Or just smooth and stable rom?
If customization, I would recommend poking around sprint Gnex dev forum. A lot of good and customizable roms there!
If smooth and stable, just stock. Really. Jelly bean is only android version that I wouldn't be disappointed even with Stock rom and kernel.
Overall, I would recommend d you to use stock for awhile and then if you're not happy with it, try popular custom roms.
Have a nice day and welcome!
