Howdy,
So I'm another user having problems with GPS on my HTC Wildfire. I tried pretty much everyhing. Flashed all different radio versions via Recovery, fastboot and Android Flasher. Also I installed the agps patch. None of these solved my problem.
Before doing all this I had no GPS status bar icon at all. Now at least I have an icon showing me that he is constantly searching for GPS.
I also used GPS Test to clear and update AGPS but no luck.
Finally I tried several custom ROMS, from CM, to Splashmod and rempuzzle and all of them have this problem. So it's ROM independent.
What else can I try?
Fasterfix and gps essentials are the 2 apps that helped me fix my gps once.. and i had even used the agps patch by crypted for more accuracy

If you did all the above really clean - I mean with formatting/wiping/factory resets etc. it could also be a hardware problem in the end. But from my experience there are just a lot of pitfalls why solutions won't work.
The fact that you didn't get the icon show up before but now it does looks to me that it's not a hardware problem. My suggestion would be to reflash either the radio and the ROM again - but as clean as possible.
- look into "The Complete Wildfire Index" thread (in "General") pick the radio in the middle and flash that first
- do a clean wipe of at least the system partition, cache and dalvik-cache (I also do "format system" and sometimes a "wipe all/factory reset" to be sure and it couldn't hurt to wipe data also - your decision)
- flash the ROM you want to use
- flash gapps
- reboot and look what it does (this most likely won't do at that point)
- flash the newest of the 3 radios afterwards and see if this helps
--- Edit --- to flash two different radios is a dirty trick to remove leftovers or problems because wiping or formatting doesn't touch the radio --- EDIT ---
For testing GPS I suggest GPS Status from the market (best tool in my opinion). You could delete ags data as well with it.
The agps patch (I'm using it too) is just for optimization (to get faster responses) - it won't help if your GPS doesn't work at all.
Hello guys,
I finally resolved the issue and realised that GPS was working all the time well. However, I always tried to search for a signal inside a building in front of my computer and was not aware of the fact that the signal might be too weak to be received from within inside...:silly:
Anyway, the flashing method apparently did the trick!
Cheers

I have a GPS problem, and despite reading a number of the threads in the forum and trying the usual fixes (downloading GPS Status, clearing downloaded data, re-downloading A-GPS data, factory reset, upgrading to 2.3.3 etc...) I still figure out what's wrong.
Symptoms are:
I do have a GPS icon in the task bar in the apps where I would expect it appear
I never get a lock
Both GPS Status and GPS Test seem to indicate I have *no* signal from any sats
I am outside when I try this
aLogcat seesm to show no NMEA data, though I've never read a logcat entry for working GPS, so I'm guessing a bit here. It does show GPS start up and shutdown lines however
It didn't work in 1.84, when I downgraded, and it still doesn't work in 2.3.3 - seems to be version independant!
Does anyone have any bright ideas? It's really irritating. As a side note, the phone isn't rooted (as I forgot to S-off when I upgraded to 2.3.3) though it could be downgraded fairly easily if there was a good reason to do it...
Thanks!
If it has never worked and you have wiped the device, re-installed etc....
Then I would guess that it may be a defective unit...

1. are you running custom roms? if so which?
2. have you updated your radio and made sure that the RIL is matching?

1. Nope. The stock 2.3.3 RUU and before that the UK T-Mobile Stock 1.84 ROM.
2. Stock only, so standard RIL.

That is my fear. It did work when I first got it, but it now doesn't on any ROM. Unfortunately I can't quite work out what changed...
If this is the problem, does anyone know a way to get back on the T-Mobile official ROM so i can take it back to the shop?
Hi there, Your best bet would be to try and downgrade, root and flash a matched ROM, RIL & radio to retest. This happened to me a while back and this was the only thing that sorted it. CoreDroid has been particularly good for GPS on my DHD, hope this helps

Yeah - I tried the Coredroid rom - no dice. Think that confirms it's hardware. Back to stock and then back to the shop for this one.
I heard rumours that early DHDs were flaky for GPS. Guess that confirms it for me...
Had exactly the same problem with mine after using the gingerbread ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056329
Are there different versions for different countries? Maybe this only works in the US or something? I'm guessing here!
Are there different stock ROMS for different countries/ networks? I didn't write down the version numbers before updating
I've tried running cm7.0.3 and virtuous 1.0.2 and I can't get a GPS lock while using runkeeper. Is this because of my location?? or the rom?
I've also tried the clear cache zip file for CM7 and it still didn't work.
Thanks
Did your GPS work when you were stock?
There are quite a few reports of GPS issues with CM, I know I experienced (and still do to some degree) a lot of them.
There are several things that people have tried to fix this issue..
You can wipe your "EFS" data, I tried this and it made things different but I'm not sure if it made them better.
You can flash a new radio, I'm currently running 12.50.60.24_26.08.04.16 and it's working reasonably well for me but there is a newer one available that I plan on switching to the next time I upgrade CM
See http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/21454-gps-on-g2-not-working-stable-7/ for more information
Thanks, tried wiping efs but that didn't work. Will try the radio now
There is an AGPS Patch for Desire Z?
What did Google say when you tried searching the term?

something like this ?
Speed Up Satelite Fix for GPS on Android
Just get the app GPS Status on the android market, it will update your AGPS data every few days. Then, use 4ext control to wipe your efs partitions - once for every new rom you flash.
That's all I do, and I get near instant lock every time! Of course, if you travel alot, fixes will take a bit longer.
Unrelated maybe, but I found this thread to solve all my GPS issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258316
My gps got screwed up along the way from flashing different roms. Then, I flashed back to stock and it was still broken. This thread was the fix.

I couldn't agree more. I even went as far as updating my lib files to my carrier's latest, changing the pool for gps servers, wiping efs, gps driver, etc. Although, that helped KEEP a lock.... never did help getting one after a few days on not using it. The ONLY thing that helped me was using "gps status" app from the market and clicking wipe gps data and then click update. locks ALWAYS within a minute even driving fast down the highway or indoors. saved me alot of aggravation

Can you explain that part in laymen's terms? Or point to some instruction. I would love to get my GPS fix working better, but that's over my head.
I created my own gps.conf file to fix any GPS issue and i got 8 satellites and 15m error margin. My solution is a mix of
this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239713
this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fqn_G1xzeY
and this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472870
Enjoy
I Found a new method to fix GPS e get it stronger (I Found till 15 satellites with my device) I'll be happy to share with you tonight, stay tuned
Ok now I'll explain you my method running on a CyanogenMOD ILWT ROM (ver 388b):
Go Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258316 According to the Radio you Have downlod the specific gps.vision.so file then: 1.wipe cache, dalvik battery stats and efs 2. after rebooted your phone install the gps.vision file 3 wipe the efs partition again with the terminal method you can find here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fqn_G1xzeY. Once rebooted go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472870 and download the desired AGPS patch file, before to follow the procedure to apply the agps patch, modify the gps.conf file with those strings
NTP_SERVER=COUNTRY.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=0.COUNTRY.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=1.COUNTRY.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=2.COUNTRY.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=3.COUNTRY.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=0.REGION.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=1.REGION.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=2.REGION.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=3.REGION.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
where you have to substitute COUNTRY with your country (it for italy in my case) and REGION with your region (europe in my case)
once you did this, follow the standard procedure to install this patch than once rebooted i advice to make another time a cache, dalvik, efs wipe in recovery. Once rebooted again use a gps app like GPS status (i use this) and use the function manage agps status to recover and download data, reboot again your phone than when the phone is on again run gps status, download agps status again and wait for gps lock. With this procedure i got till 15 satellites and a error margin of 10meters. cherees
Hey!
I looked everywhere to find a solution to my GPS that's not working and ended up with this thread, where crypted offers a scripted solution, including the agps solution, using the NTP servers.
I selected the Google Build and after a Restart, the GPS locked and I was happy!
But unfortunately, it locked 260km away from my position :-/
I know that some users already experienced similar problems, but I couldn't find any solution yet.
Did I miss something?

Hey!
These are two of the solutions I tried, first the scripted one (I actually wanted to post this link but I accidentally took an other ^^) and then the other one.
There was no change, I also think, that both describe a similar way to solve it.
Right now, I saw, that there are two gps.conf files, one in /etc/gps.conf and one in /system/etc/gps.conf, but I don't think that this is the problem..
BTW: Heres the GPS Status - there are no Satellites showing up, is this normal?

well, try with this too :
4. This works with ANY ROM unless the ROM has aGPS and/or GPS disabled in the code. This happens with CMx nightlies and some betas! I cannot fix this, neither can you.
9. CMx ROM users may not experience benefits from this patch. However, we have had good reports from CM users with one negative one. Remember to do all of the steps when flashing and the following notes are important too!
11. Reports show that certain ROM's including some CM builds require a modification in the build.prop. You need to change "ro.ril.def.agps.mode = 2" or "ro.ril.def.agps.mode = 0" to be "ro.ril.def.agps.mode = 1" in order for aGPS to properly function. Only do this IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS after attempting the standard patch.
the 11 one may get it to work ... ?

I tried that already (also tried different config layouts), but unfortunately, it changed nothing.
Isn't the aGPS just for finding the nearest satellites faster? So, it seems, that aGPS is finding the wrong position (maybe because of some NTP servers?) and that the normal gps still isn't even working (because I tried to get GPS running since I flashed CM7)..
Hmmm..

i guess it's not working, somehow, since you can't find ANY satellite
did you try any other rom, and did gps work when u were stock ?
^^
Yes, it worked on stock rom, and i believe it also did on another (maybe Mindhaxors ROM)
But I like CM very much and would prefer not having to change, these are like two worlds for me since I tried it out ;-)
I had the same issue, using CM7 nightly. I applied the patch and GPS was showing a fixed location far away from actual location. Then I tried a combination of using another app (GPS test instead of GPS status), calibration of compass (rotating in all three axes a cuple of times) and removal of AGPS data and GPS started to work in gps test as well as on google maps. After reboot however I was not able to reproduce it. Now I don't have any fix..I'll try it tomorrow, maybe I'll have more luck.
make nand backup and try full factory reset clean dalvik cache and stuff, and reflash... try it even with new sd card or just some clean one...
p.s. flash latest nightly, or 14th january one, since it's tested ;-)

I have the same issue:
CM72, GPS fix various methods tried out as in the topics linked, get "too" fast fix within minuted but around 400km away ;-( Any idea what else could be done???
Yes. Wait for sat locks and position update the first time and try not to get bored and quit. It well find you eventually and subsequent location updates will be faster...Might take 10 min or so.

I also have the same kind of prolem.
I tried every solution adviced but my gps is stuck to 46°59.999N and 3°59.999E.
i am with cm 7.2 and my gps workswhen i install a stock rom.
thank u in advance

I think I might be having the same problem, in my case after applying GPS patches the location returned by GPS was constant (and far away from my actual location). I am yet to understand and fix it, but I think I'm getting closer
UPDATE @estantor - yep I'm having the same issue, the GPS is either stuck at exactly the same coordinates, or lately it stopped locking on to the satellites
those are the exact coordinates where my CM72 GPS is also stuck, in the middle of nowhere in France.
Really strange, I wonder if flashing a more recent CM72 update might help?
UPDATE: DId a new flash with CM72 RC0, applied the fix and now its fast and correct ;-)!!!

did you install the latest nighly build? i'm still stuck :-/
which fix exactly did you apply?
Edit: GPS is working after I installed m1ndh4x0rs ROM where it worked before and reverting to my previous backup (CM7) it still shows the wrong location, though, when GPS has a weak or no signal
Since I changed to BlackIce 1.27 from RcMix3D4.0 I have been able to get near instant GPS locks, but after 2-5mins I lose GPS in google navigation. If I restart the program it works again for 2-3mins...
Things I have tried:
Changing the GPS settings in IceTool & using GPS stats to download new gps data
Full wipe and fresh re-flash
Differnet RILs from Icetool
Flashing several different agps builds
What I would like to try:
Can I flash the gps.spade.so from one of my working ROMs (RCMix3D4.0, HTC Froyo, ARHD6.3.1) to BlackIce 1.27?
I am loving this ROM, I have my battery and performance just where I want them so I really don't want to change it (or change it as little as possible).
Thank you in advance for your help.
have you tryed flashing the gps and see if that helps you

this is a problem for every CM7 based roms.
the only way for it to lock all the way to ur destination is by...
(when GPS stops moving)
1. turn off GPS
2. turn on GPS
You are absolutely certain that you've turned on GPS in the location and security tab
in 'settings' ? I've had a similar issue with Blackice with Navigon, and it turned out that
i needed to turn on GPS for localisation on street level.
After that no more issues.
Problem is fixed but I'm not sure how.
I restored my RCMix3D 4.0 backup copied system/lib/hw/gps.spade.so to SD. Restored my Blackice 1.27 copied the file from the SD to the system/lib/hw.
It didn't work straight away so I re-flashed AGPS found on Xda (thank crypted). Now no loss at all, and quick lock times.
Strangely before multiple attempts of using AGPS did nothing..
My main initial question was really can I copy gps.spade.so across? What dose it do?
