In any case, if you are flashing any NON-touchwiz based rom (or do not understand what I am referring to), please do a lot more research before flashing any other ICS roms. Please read and follow directions fully for any rom that you intend on flashing to your phone.
The search function does not work well from the mobile app. From a pc browser, you have 2 search functions. The one at the very top that will search the entire XDA site, and the one halfway down that will search the current thread. The suggestion to use this was valid and should be regarded as very sound advice.
If xda search fails use Google and add "xda" to your search string, it will pull up all of the threads on xda containing the keywords in your search right at the top of the list. Just below the first few results there's an option to add all on xda-developers.com click it and you will find pages and pages of Google results for Xda with your keywords  search, read, read, read, search, read some more then flash. If you don't educate yourself about the risks of flashing and how to avoid them, don't come back and start a thread crying about how your phone is bricked. I'll tell you now, if all you get is a blue led until you pull the battery or Odin fails at the data partition repeatedly, you failed, your phone is now a paperweight, take it to sprint pay the $35 for a warranty replacement and don't come here and cry about it

Agat recovery backup on Stock FF18 - "can't find sext-sd"
I rooted my phone and flashed agat's CWM recovery.
When I do a backup from recovery, it says it "can't find ext-sd". Any idea why this is? Will this cause a checksum error or other errors when I try recover?
Thanks!

Its because your SD Card isn't partitioned, no big deal. the sd-ext partition is where a2sd scripts place the app+data, then creates a symlink to the device so you can put apps on your SD card you normally couldn't move because android thinks they are still on the internal file system

The sd-ext partition is a secondary partition on the SD card, typically you will have a fat32 or xfat partition and then a smaller partition of 1 or 2gb for as2d. Really isn't necessary on our device but on older devices with less app storage it was useful. I used to have my evo set up that way when I used it as my primary phone. I've never used up more than 1.5gb of my 2gb app storage on the et4g so haven't seen a need to do any partitioning. Some recoveries have the option to uncheck sd-ext, cache and other partitions during backup so you won't see the error, but the error shouldn't affect a restore it will just skip the sd-ext when creating and restoring the nandroid

Any idea what would have caused a check-sum error on a recovery I tried to do recently then? You can change the name of the recovery files that agat's creates, right? All I did was that and delete some old ones, then tried to recover and I got a checksum error.
Thanks

Yes this is the Sprint Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch section.
Did you make a nandroid backup 1st? (If Yes, restore your backup) Did you go into "mounts and storage" and format "/system" before you wiped data/cache/dalvik cache?
Odin another rom.
Search for and download odin v1.85. Then download a .tar file. Where ever you find these items, you'll also find good instructions.
Then try flashing starburst again.

I would suggest 5.0.2.3, or 5.0.2.6 Also...make sure you format cache/dalvik/data/system at least 3X each. If that doesn't work, then try redownloading the ROM. Might've gotten a borked download.

Use this: LoStkernel or this: CWM
But I'm willing to bet that you either didn't format system in the mounts and storage menu or it didn't take when you tried. I would retry StarBurst again first, making sure to Format System Under Mounts and Storage and making sure it succeeds. Then you won't have to worry about any of the other stuff.
Yeah, CWM can be quirky

The place to post ANYTHING about using a Starburst ROM on Epic 4 G Touch is
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276320
I feel a little foolish asking this here, but I'm a new member, didn't find an answer in my searches and can't respond in the Clean GB thread.
I'm new to rooting and to installing ROMs but have had great success and happiness installing Toadlife's Clean GB ROM. In a recent post on his Clean GB BML thread, he mentioned that there is an "updater script" for his ROM that would allow a user to update to 1.0.3 without having to wipe all their data, but all I can find is the full version.
Is there a unique updater script for this ROM? Or do I just download the full version and will the updater script be included with that? (And if so, do I just install the zip from CWM recovery without doing a pre-ROM wipe?)
Any help y'all can offer would be greatly appreciated. Finding this forum has been a huge help to me.
Alex
When u were looking at his rom, did it mention anything about an updater script included in the changelogs? I don't really remember. Sorry.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Ok, I just read about the updated version, and there is no updater script in there. I think u can zip the update. I yet have to try it though.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Thank you for responding. When you say you can "zip the update", I'm not sure what that means. Is there a file that you've found that I could zip as an "update.zip" file?
Yes, when u click on the full version, it will download onto ur sd card as a zip file. So u basically just reboot into cwm and install the zip file.

OK. So there isn't actually a special "updater script". This comment made me think there was

But really he's just talking about doing this Nandroid backup process?
Sorry if I seem dense. This is just my first time with a custom ROM and I know Samsung has actual update files. I really appreciate the help!

Hehe. The updater-script is built in. He says it backs up and restores on its own, but to back up just in case. Which is exactly what you should do. It SHOULD do it for you

To upgrade from cleangb 1.0 to 1.0.3 simply download the full 1.0.3 zip file to your sd card. Reboot into clockwork. Install zip from sd. Choose zip.
The "updater script" is built into this zip. You don't have to do any prior backups, but you should anyway. That is what toadlife was saying in the post.

BML is the partition table and RFS or EXT4 are the file systems.
so i shouldn't really have any worries updating this kernel then.... i just don't want functionality problems, thats all
Ver 1.0 of cleangb was bml/rfs based, so you are already in this mode. There is also a version which you may want to consider one day in the future in another thread (mtd), but for now, stick with what you know.

I think most of the BML kernels will work on either RFS or EXT4. In the install script they check to see which file system you have and install appropriately.

I made the jump to MTD this morning AM. I restored my Legendary 2.1 on MTD and flashed the MTD Shadowkernel. Zero issues and everything is so smooth on it. What issues are you concerned about?
As toad advertised, cleangb just #$%ing works. I see a lot of ppl move to mtd with no issues, but it doesn't give me anything I don't already have ... yet. Cool factor, sure, but I will hold out for that compelling reason before flashing. Maybe 1.0.4 or 5....or if I get bored one night. Lol

Hi,
I'm thinking of taking the jump into CleanGB 1.05 MTD. Currently I have a rooted EI22 build. I'm going to update to the EI30 modem first but I'm unsure of the steps to get the CleanGB 1.05 build installed because of the change to the MTD filesystem. There is a how to video on the BML 1.03 page but I can't find anything on the MTD 1.05 build. From reading I think there are extra steps I need to take, or maybe the ROM does all the steps already.
Doea anyone have a link to a video, or instructions for loading the CleanGB 1.05 MTD ROM?
Thanks
JM
As long as you have ClockworkMod you are good to go. Most (I think all) MTD roms auto-convert for you. Then enjoy!
^^^^exactly... if you have cwm 5.0.2.7 you're good to go... if you're using acs recovery flash cwm first... all the roms do the work fo you...

I would think so... but people have reported errors using acs recovery when trying to conver to mtd using that recovery... so 3.x.x.x may give you the same problems... never tried it though so I'm not 100% sure...
Edit- and after flashing an mtd rom and converting to mtd DO NOT flash another recovery... not even 5.0.2.7... the cwm that the mtd rom installs is the only recovery that works on mtd for our phones

MTD ROMs have their own MTD only version of CWM 5.0.2.7 that gets flashed with the conversion. Do not try to change it after converting..
It is also best to just update to CWM 5 before trying to convert. Just to be sure.

Sweet, found the perfect thread for my question
I'm running cleanGB Mtd 1.05, came from CM7. I have unsuccessfully tried to flash a few things, I have an epic ringtones zip I picked up somewhere along the way that gives you a ton more system ringtones, I also tried to flash some ei22 transparent mms themes....anyway, none worked. did the usual process, wiped cache, dalvik, and nada. Nothing there. At least they didn't cause any harm either.
Not sure why this is....my only guess was they were designed for bml ROMs? Thought i had a good understanding of bml/mtd in which case i didn't think it would really matter which partition I'm on for these flashable zips to work....any takers?

Yes, and not a problem...I forget half the damn time and wonder why the changes to my theme are not showing up...LOL. You have to mount system anytime you want to flash something in MTD except ROMs and kernels...they seem to mount system for you. Restoring backups do not need system mounting either. You can back up and restore your MTD ROM freely, even a way of using ROM Manager (ask me). BUT you cannot restore backups of BML ROMs without jumping through all those hoops that you hinted about.

I am sure I have forgotten to unmount as well....need some of that Chinkocobra or whatever it's called.
I'm going to hijack my own thread to ask this. I do not have enough posts to put this in the developers fourm which is probably a better place.
How do the custom ROM's for the EPIC4g (any phone I guess) come about? The few ROM's I've looked at seem to be one man operations (i.e. toadlife for the CleanGB I use). Clearly the CM effort is a larger team effort. I'm very happy with the CleanGB ROM after a few days of use but I'm looking forward to an ICS based phone. I don't think I'm brave enough to jump onto a release candidate so I'm probably not switching to CM9 RC0 any time soon.
So is the normal path of develpment for the CM team the first release a new ROM (CM7 for gingerbread, CM9 for ICS,..) and then do the other custom ROM developers take this as a starting point to do their thing? Now that CM9 RC0 is out should I expect to see a bunch of custom RC0 ROMs released in the next few weeks?
Thanks for the help. Oh and if you see Toadlife ask him when CleanICS-MTD is coming ;-)

So i decided to go from illusion to stockaroma v2 and once i got the phone setup it said i was running low on storage space so later on i rebooted my phone and i got android.phone has crashed blabla
Upon rebooting it kept crashing and crashing so i decided to wipe and reflash stockaroma but funny thing is everytime id wipe and start over I'd get same settings apps and stuff already preloaded as if cwm wasnt even wiping i tried couple times reflashing the rom didnt work..
So i decided to restore my backup now when i went ahead to do that o couldn't because it was saying there is no files ? And i flashed a rom i had on my sdcard but even tho i wiped i got some stuff preloaded which is not normal ? And now i got like 7 times the same directory it looks like this : sdcard/emulated/0/0/0/0 ??
Everything is messed up and down i do not want to go through odin since i have a damn slow computer which shutdowns by its own now imagine me flashing and it crashes...

Sorry but Odin seems to be your best bet or go buy an external sdcard and reader (as I've advertised on all forums before). This is also why we say to update your recovery to the latest one constantly, in many threads and most OP posts of most roms. Good luck. Also always having a backup of all your contemts on memory is recommended before messing with flashing ROMs. Live and learn.

Funny thing is in 4 years never been through anything similar you're telling me live and learn like i probably never read anything before flashing which is not the case i am always careful....
My guess is i ran out of storage space and maybe thats why there was so many /0 folders now that i cleaned some junk im all set up back and running just was wondering what happened and i had the latest cwm touch recovery so i don't know how should i upgrade my recovery if an update isn't out?

Personally I use TWRP. You may try that instead. CWM may or may not be the problem

I say live and learn cause you didn't have thing backed up like you should and you made a mistake. I've yet to see anyone have duplicate /0 for that reason and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the cause. Its cause you weren't on the latest or even up to date to handle 4.2.2. I never said you weren't careful but in lots of the threads including illusion my post and Ramsay's, I think, says make sure you have updated your recovery and backup your sdcard contents. Just saying and its a friendly heads up, also advised you on external sdcard. No need to be defensive, just giving pointers and helping, bud.

I haven't ever ran into the issue so maybe someone else can chime in. I would just format it if you don't care what else you lose.

In TWRP there's an option to only wipe internal sd if you want to try that.
Or maybe if you Odin the stock firmware it'll kill the symlink or whatever is holding it there. Then try to delete.
Or factory reset?

Isn't there a way you can extract specific data from them? Never had to myself but I swear I've seen it mentioned somewhere.

You can use TiBu. But I just open them with WinRAR. Any archiver should work.

Use Odin and switch to the latest twrp, lots of ppl have been having issues with cwm lately as its not updated with the latest flashing scripts and such, most cwm recoveries can't handle preload or wipe everything needed for 4.2 roms, try twrp and u shouldn't have anymore issues...

(In TWRP) Restore>Advanced>Select the partitions you want to restore
There is a similar option in CWM6 (at least there was last time I used it on my old phone) but I don't remember the specifics.

Yeah, that's an option in both, but I was referring to the ability to just pull a certain app and data out of one of those partition backups.

Ah ok. Yeah thats in Titanium. Batch>Restore>Data from Nandroid, then you should be able to select the specific data/apps you want.
ok guys im very frustrated. this is my 3rd s4 and i just want to know what im doing wrong, im on a tmobile phone. so when i get my s4 i immediately root it via twrp method, then i go and find i good stock rom to flash, my favorite is wicked rom, i get the rom, putt it on the external sd card, flash the rom and flash ktoonsez kernel, it reboots and the rom works fine no problems, until i try and reboot, then it just hangs on the samsung galaxy s4 boot screen, and it then starts to bootloop without ever going back on, ive tried flashing multiple stock roms and even leaving the kernel stock and tried different kernels without any luck, i can odin back to stock and it works fine, also i can flash any aosp rom and i dont have any reboot issues, this has happened with every phone, im at a loss and i have no idea what im doing wrong, clearly something, i need help. please help guys
Did you do the wipes, including factory reset?
Yes I do all the wipes

Just some quick questions. What model is your phone? Which TWRP did you flash? Did you check the md5 checksum of the rom and kernel zips?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
Model SGH-M919, I've tried twrp 2.5 and 2.6, mostly use 2.5 because I have issues with 2.6 and yes I've checked them multiple times, re-download them both multiple times as well
Use cwm, both versions of twrp are bugged or something is wrong with it. Cwm will do the trick for you

I encountered the same problem, go to KTweaker if you are still using ktoonsez kernel. And change your settings to this.
Make sure you set it to on Boot as Immediately & save the settings. Same thing happened to me, I put in his settings and problem vanished.
After you do that, turn it off and go to recovery. Wipe Dalvik Cache & Cache than finally Fix Permissions in Advanced.

+1 you're having an issue with the kernel you're using.
Are you using exFAT 64gb sd card? If you are, take it out and your phone will boot fine.
Sent from My S4 in BEASTMODE
Ok. Because you formatted the internal storage with TWRP your partitions are probably messed up. Odin back to stock (like you need to return it) and start over again. You can use TWRP if you want, its a great recovery. Just dont format the internal storage with it. Obviously try the easier fixes first, ie SD card. These phones seem to be more sensitive to formatting than previous galaxy models.

Ive been thru this issue also Trust me Restore stock once more and use oudhs cwm base recovery with swipe gestures. .. skip the twrp junk.
You need to root in a specific manor to bypass the Selinux permissive setting that samsung put on the s4.
I root with odin and flash these files in order after u google search them there also in the s4 root section ..I forget which page.
First @ foremost
FLASH RECOVERY I RECOMEND OUDHS 1.0.3.3 swipe gesture By shabby penguin.
Reboot device into recovery
Flash in order
1# root m919 UVUAMDL.zip
2nd #flash MDB SetUIDoff.zip that bypasses the kernel issue that samsung has blocked ..
3# flash superuser.zip of your choice
#4 wipe cash
5#reboot
You can now flash any Rom, restore etc.... no issues.

I'm having issues no matter what kernel or rom I flash, I'm pretty sure it's a bit more complicated than that
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda premium
No its not actually. ... if you would odin back stock and root the way I said with files i mentioned you would see.. if you dont want to then thats fine too.
You dont even need odin stock
Just format system in twrp
Then reflash the files.
