[Q] storage problem

Hey Guys,
it's me again haha.
So I have a problem...
I just read this about the memory of our phone:

So, I downloaded Backstab and need to download extra data, which are downloaded to SD...
Now I'm getting the message that there isn't enoght memory aviable.
So I looked into the file manager and saw, that all downloads,pictures etc. are saved on the "USB Storage" (→Internal SD).
Now my question is, how I can change the standard storage to "SD Card" (→External SD) , that my downloads, pictures (and of cause the data for Backstab) are saved on my "SD Card" (→External SD), where are 8GB free instead of the 72MB on "USB Storage" (→Internal SD).
Hope you understand what I mean ; my english isn't the best, I know

You can find this tool in the android market.
Note not all apps can be moved but this may help.

That app only moves apps from the Device Memory to the internal SD, not to the external one.
If your phone is rooted (if it isn't, I'd advise you too, although I reckon you should first research the pros and cons - and your warranty is voided), you can use ROM Manager to change the default path App2SD puts your apps into, or you can flash a ROM with internal/external memory swap.
Short version: both of these solutions require your phone to be rooted. If it isn't, then my post isn't of any help but there might be someone more knowledgeable out there who actually knows another (better) way to do this.

That app only moves apps from the Device Memory to the internal SD, not to the external one.
This is not true.......
App2SD moves Apps to External SD, if you have normal /etc/vold.fstab, with mount points as normal, not swapped.
This App is really just a GUI to do what you can do with native Android Apps 2 SD....and it gives Notification if a d/l App can be moved, i.e. coded by dev.
To actually see what Apps are on External SD, if you have moved them, use Storage Analyser free from Market.

You can clearly see, I hope, Apps which have been moved to External SD, in /sdcard/external_sd/.amdroid_secure.
These Apps were moved with App2SD.
Also, if you look at the pic below, of Settings/Manage applications/On SD card tab.....this shows those Apps which have been moved to External SD, which have a check-mark, e.g. Google+.....you can also see G+ above, clearly in external .android_secure folder
and it also shows those Apps which can be moved, or are coded to by dev.
btw...the USB Storage message on bottom is just information!!
USB Storage or Internal SD, is intended for Storage of Data relating to Apps, Pics, Music, Game Data, etc.
USB, or Internal SD, cannot be used, normally, for Apps, i.e. as in App2SD

I see. I was wrong then. Thank you for the useful post. It turns out I was fooled by the "USB Storage" bar, since it seems to imply they're stored in the internal memory.
But I don't think that'll really solve his problem, as from what I understood, the application data is still stored in the internal SD. So I still think the internal/external swap would be the best solution for him. Specially since he also complains about the pictures and stuff.
Either way, that ended up being an important piece of info for myself, so I thank you again for correcting me.

You are correct re OP......
if you wish to store loads a game data or photo stuff....
I think that is what the swap was designed for....it will give you potentially 16/32G for this data....I feel you will need a good SD....like at least Class 6....
And Apps can be moved to the smaller Internal SD....which could be good.....
On my last device I needed to use DT's A2SD..with 1G ext-3 partition on SD for Apps.....so this phone is pretty good.....
Just on the OP....it is a pity that most Apps seem to be written with the /mnt/sdcard as default external Storage....
something devs should keep in mind!!!

You have too ways of doing that (technically, three). But please understand before trying any of this that your phone must be rooted!
1. Manually edit the /etc/vold.fstab file (non-recommended unless you can find a good tutorial specifically for Galaxy W, since different devices might have different mount points. I wasn't able to find one, but my research took me 2 min so you might be able to find one.)
2. Replace your vold.fstab file with an already edited one. Here's a nice tutorial on how to do it.
3. Flash a custom ROM which already has this tweak. Like this one, for example.

No the sd card thing is just if you have a partition in it for apps. So the backup you made is perfect. It shows every time when I make one on my phone.

Really, what is happening is that Recovery expects to find that .android_secure folder where the External SD Card normally is for most Android, that is /mnt/sdcard .......
But, things are different on our phone, as our External Card is on /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
AS far as I know, and I am open to correction, there is no back-up of Apps moved to external SD performed by this CWM version.
And, I think that as far as Recovery is concerned, the external SD is on /emmc.....

I understand you here Irish and I read through your discussion with Arco on this issue,but in reality it appears the CWM never had any problems backing up apps; whether moved to to SD or not.I say this because I have many apps on my SD,yet successfully restored them ALL from my nandroid after flashing new stock ROM.

I don't dispute what you are saying at all.....
But, can I propose a reason, with some proof, for my contention regarding no backup of Apps moved to External SD??
My contention is that you are able to restore Apps which have been moved to External SD, for the simple reason that your external SD does not change it's contents, as nothing is written to it by Nandroid restore.....
the .android_secure on external SD is left intact, no back-up, no restore, no change.
As part of Android security, there are asec files in the Phone Internal memory, which are basically sym-links to the Apps which are on External SD.......
these are restored as part of the Nandroid Restore process, so if your external SD has not been corrupted, or destroyed, the Restore will appear to restore those Apps on External SD.
My evidence of no backup of External .android_secure folder/files follows...
[I have made a Nandroid backup with CWM recovery, and also used Titanium BU to back-up all Apps+Data]
By use of Titanium Backup Pro ability to extract Apps from Nandroid, I show that an App, my example is Amazon Kindle, is not included in my Nandroid Backup, but it's data is, which is in Internal Phone memory.

This App, Amazon Kindle, has been moved to External SD:

Now, using the above information, and the fact that Titanium Backup Pro is capable of restoring Apps by extracting from Nandroid, look at the following pic:

As you can see, only Data relating to Amazon Kindle is backed-up.
To check and verify this, I uninstalled Kindle, and attempted to use the Nandroid to restore, as shown above......with no success.
However, as you know, I also had a regular Titanium BU, of Apps+Data, taken at the same time.
With this I restored Amazon Kindle and data without a hitch!!!
My books are still there!!!! Thank God!!!
But, if I was relying on a Nandroid, made with our CWM, to restore this App after a SD card failure or corruption, I would not be able to do it!!!
My advice is, to be sure, always make a back-up of the full contents of your SD card, by connecting to your PC, and using whatever, e.g. Windows Explorer, with all hidden files and folders shown.....make sure all files with . are backed up
You never know when that SD card will fail, so "Be Prepared" as they say in the Boy Scouts....dib..dib...dib!!

Irish,looks to me like there's plenty of life in those 57-yr old brain cells yet.I think your explanation completely 'explains' whats going on here.So keeping apps on the 'external' SD also unwittingly protects them from system wipes as long as you make a nandroid...and as long as your SD doesn't fail you!!Thanks Irish!

Just to reiterate:
The best thing to do, and good practice anyway, back up External SD regularly.....maybe when you do other bk-ups.... like Nandroid and TBU.
Make sure that all hidden files and folders are visible ....there is a Windows setting, not sure for Linux or Mac??
This is basically to ensure that the
.android_secure folder is backed up.
The xxxyyy.asec files there are the App files, which are encrypted and "hidden" [asec = android secure]....
and they have sym links to data in Internal Memory.....
Google sure went to a lot of trouble to "protect" App files on removable memory partition.....

Yeah.....I'd say your OK.....
As long as you understand moved Apps on External SD are not backed up.....but that is OK as long as you remember to make a back-up of your SD Card, as outlined in my previous post.....just for your own data security.

Also, just to mention the other error msg. relating to sd-ext.....like ext-3, or ext-2 partitions.
There is no problem here, this refers to Linux partition on external SD, which is used in some ROM's to move Apps, and which then appear to be on your device.
This is A2SD, by Dark Tremor....which is not supported in our ROM's....afaik!!!!
So no worries there!!!

CWM --> backup and restore --> backup to external sdcard.

1. If you want to install apps on the sd card you can create a partition in your sd card which will be treated like internal memory. Check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397120
2. RAM is a completly diffrent thing, you can't increase it, it is the temporary memory and it doesn't act like the normal memory, you can equivilate this to your pc, the numer of programs you can keep running at the same time is set by your RAM but sd card memory is what you refer to as hard disk memory.

I have installed link2sd card through whch I am able to store apps to my sd card but they are still storing app data to internal memory.
Can I move that app data to external card? so that it will release more space and I will able to story more apps.

When creating the link make sure to check "Link lib files", this will link data too.

It auto install apps to sd card and didn't give me any option to link lib files. and I didn't find any option in link2sd app.

I also like to move app private data to sd card so it will free phone internal memory.

It asks you this if you do it manually, otherwise ther is an option in settings wich allows you to choose what it will link. So there check "Link lib files".

I already checked but have not found any option for this. I also checked link2sd website they clearly mentioned that link2sd will not move any app private data files to sd card.

How big the second partition should be so it is enough to link all your apps?
I have a 2 Gb card and it has about 300 mb left.

200 MB might be enough

I am facing this problem now , I have done all of this I have EXT2 and Link2sd and when I install apps the internal Memory device show me the message that I should uninstall apps , there are apps that do not have Lib files , I need to know which steps should I take?
please help me if you have solved it

I have done all of the partitioning SD card now I have a lot of space and I have Link2sd but when I download apps it still show me : memory device has low space , it means the EXT2 is not treated as internal memory , which steps should I take now?

[Q] Move apps from phone storage to USB storage (internal sd card)

Hi,
I have Android 4.1.2 and trying to move apps from phone storage which is only 2GB to USB storage (11.25 GB). But for every app, movable or not when I try to move - hit the "move to sd card" button- . It says "unable to move app. Note enough storage space".
I don't have external SD card right now and I only want to move them to internal. Do you know what can I do?

U need to change where the phone stores data from ext SD card to internal SD card, u should be able to do it with an app like ROM toolbox, u need to be rooted though, or go buy a sdcard, u can get a 8gb at Walmart for like $12

How do I change that? So far as much as I tried with app2sd, titanium, and rom toolbox, they only let me choose between phone and external. they don't even consider internal sd card.

Somebody plz let me know any workaround for moving apps to Internal USB storage. Under settings>application manager> there is an option to move apps to external sd card only. Is it possible to install/move apps to internal usb storage (around 11.5 GB). Please help.
Phone - Galaxy s2 (At&t sgh i777)
ROM - Shostock3 rom (android 4.1.2)

All the roots apps are for moving apps only to external sd card and to change the default storage location to either internal storage or external sd card. None have the option to change it to internal USB storage.

See idk because when I do app to SD on my ROM it goes to my USB storage, which is the internal SD card, 11.9gb, not to my external SD card I have to manually put the apps on external if I want so theoretically it should be putting them there by default, what ROM are u on? Are u rooted? Ever use an app like storage swap or anything? Shouldn't be installing apps in ur system partition, 2gb, that should only be for system apps..?

What I'm saying is I don't know because ur system, no matter what shouldn't be installing user apps in the system partition, my best advice would be to back up what u want from the phone and use Odin to do a complete wipe and unroot to stock 4.1.2 ROM, this will erase all data on the phone and restore it to stock status, from there u can reroot and use TB to get ur apps back, somewhere along the lines it sounds like ur system got confused or something because it shouldn't be putting anything in that 2gb partition, that's only for system and system app data not user, that's the whole reason to have it partitioned off, if it was me that's what I would do, just start over and see if that was it, sorry wish I could help more but I don't have ur device in front of me so I don't know

Thanks for your reply. I have mounted an external sd card and using link2sd to move apps to it. One thing I noticed that with sd card mounted, when I move apps to external sd card, some part of the app moves to the usb storage and also the app size increases after doing so. DL rom toolbox pro, under tools, all the way at the bottom u can select app2sd configure, in that there are 3 options, internal, external, or device storage, tick corrasponding selection and should be good

Actually, the options under Apps2SD in Rom Toolbox Pro are: 1) Auto, 2) Internal & 3) SD card!!

So? anyone could finally move the apps to the INTERNAL memory (those almost 12 GB) and not to the real external SD card?

I tried to use ROM Toolbox's app manager to move apps to the famous "internal SD" of the GS2.
When I move apps to SD (without an actuel SD card), I get no error but the app seems to have simply vanished from the phone with no memory actually freed on the system partition. Does someone understand what happens ?

What is your ROM? Most of my apps go to internal sd storage. The only apps that are on internal are system/came with ROM. I do believe data resides internally on the 2gb partition, but rest is on internal SD. Perhaps, you need a fresh install.

Actually I'm running the stock 4.1.2 ROM of the GT-I9100, and all apps go to the 2 GB partition :/

Okay, I use ROM Toolbox Pro. I uninstalled an app that was on internal partition, went to ROM toolbox> app2sd and it has three options: auto, internal, and SD. I selected SD, then reinstalled app, and then checked, app is now on internal sd, (not extsd).

Because I am sure I am not clear, internal partition = 2gb phone storage/internal storage, internal SD = 11.29 GB SD that resides on phone. My apps are going to internal SD when I select SD in ROM toolbox options, NOT to the removable external SD card I put in my phone
The problem with other app2sd apps is that they try to install to external SD, hence why your apps disappear, (for those apps, you need ext SD partitioned with iirc ext4). Try romtoolbox first, open, go to configure apps2sd, and it should recognize your onboard SD card)

Well, it is possible it is the stock ROM. You could try a
factory reset in your custom recovery and see what happens or full wipe and install a custom stock ROM, (backup 1st, make sure you have appropriate recovery version for installing ROM, etc).

Apps to ExtSdCard
Since I have a 16 GB ExtSdCard, I want to install and run apps from that on Android 4.1.2 on a Samsung GalaxyTab2 7. I am using Directory Bind now, which can't seem to work with all apps, so I am wondering if anyone has come up with or knows about a more perfect solution...it was no problem with Android 2.3 on my old rooted phone, but no so with this rooted Tablet...

SD Card Issues w/Zenfone 2

Every time I restart my phone, a notification pops up that says external storage inserted (SD card). However, I have not removed it. This is quite annoying, is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone know what causes this and how to disable it? Also, when I try to get Titanium Backup to backup my files to the external SD card, it will not work. I have plenty of free space on the SD card, it tells me I have 15.8 GB free on the External SD card so this is not the issue. I never had any problems backing up to the SD card previously on my Galaxy S4. Any help would be awesome!

That's normal, when you do a power off and on, it will always tell you the SD card is mounted/inserted. Did that with my Galaxy S5 also.

To access your External sd card properly you need to have rooted your phone and run the Kitkat sd card fix (available in playstore). This is an issue google has done as they want everything stored on the cloud and to stop us using sd cards altogether.
Unless you run this most apps will have issues writing to the sd card...

no it is just limitation of lollipop 5.0 i guess,each boot needs sdcard permission via documents,and titanium backup have problem with that

it is just limitation of lollipop 5.0 i guess,each boot needs sdcard permission via documents,and titanium backup have problem with that..
i am using titanium backup with internal and then cut and paste in external...i know its is annoying..but no other option for now..[as far as i know and searched]
and that notification kindoff annoying,i cant find solution till now...

Ansebovi after I wrote this post, I did some more searching and found a thread saying to download and install an app called folder mount from the play store.. It requires root but if you have that it will work. It asks you to patch the android system 2 times then reboot two times after each patch.. After that you have full access to the SD card. I did this and after I was able to backup to the sd card with titanium backup. Hope this helps.

Actually, when you first setup your phone, it even ask you if you prefer to install your apps/games on the system storage or SDCard. You can move apps to SDCard after install, this was added in Lollipop. I know because after Lollipop install on my S5, I was running out of storage space on the phone (16GB only) and had to move apps/games to Removable storage (SD Card). Deleting off your ExtSDCard is limited with 3rd party apps, file managers for example, other then the stock one, when you try to delete a file off SD, you have allow permission via Lollipop to do it, and you only have to allow once. If even tells you how to do it when you try to delete. I use ES File Explorer, no issues deleting or moving files and I'm not rooted.
