You'll have to flash something that will convert you to mtd first... so root, flash an mtd rom that will convert you... then restore backup....

However my SD card is on MTD currently. So will I need to re partition it in order for clockworkmod to recognize it? Or when I use Odin to get clockworkmod can I just check re partition there?

the sd card doesn't convert the only part that gets converted is the physical memory of the phone. you have to odin cmw then install your mtd rom then restore.

[Q] HTC Evo 4G Recovery

I wanted to know if it is possible to backup information on an Evo and transfer it to another Evo if they are both running 4.24.651.1 through recovery?
I'm pretty sure doing any kind of system files is a bad idea. if u just talking about sd card contents then that is ok
Okay thanks for the feedback

You can...but don't transfer the WiMax partition, otherwise you'll mess up the 4G part. You'll have to either do a custom backup without the WiMax partition or a custom restore without the WiMax partition.
I did this very thing on an Acer Iconia tablet I had (old one broke, but it was rooted and backed up...rooted the new one, put a custom recovery and ran restore...worked perfectly).

[Q] sd ext wont wipe or repair in recovery

Basically the problem I am seeing is when I try wiping sd ext in recovery (using ra-3.0.7gnm, a modified amon ra which has never given me problems since install months ago) I was getting an error that it could not be wiped and would be skipped. My next step was to repartition the sd card in recovery (8gb class 10 pny). That seemed to work but when I attempted to upgrade ext 2 to ext 3 it gave an error and would not let me. Currently I am using my computer to create the ext 3 partition but what could be causing the recovery to fail upgrading the partition? Any advice or recommendation or should I switch recovery? Tia.

[Q] Just turned on Evo since july 11

I just got my og Evo 4g (on the 3d now) back on for my wife since she dropped hers and is in 2 pieces lol. I havent been on the 4g forum in a long long time and need some help from you guys.
I have found out the im on android 2.2 with baseband version 2.15.00.11.19
Was running Eternal Prophecy v6.1 and on 2.6.32.27 netarchy kernel. I know im pretty far behind and want to know how i would go about getting the phone up to date and run a rom that is pretty stable since its for my wife. She has been bashing me ever since ive found out about rooting and flashing roms, so i want to hook her up with a stable rom with all bloatware removed, and show her that "aftermarket" roms are way better than the one that came with the phone. Any recommendations would be helpful.
Oooohhhhh....1 thing, i dont have the SD card anymore and most likely will be putting her SD card in, would that be ok?
Yes that should be okay. Might need to partition the card via recovery. Roms I have been using cm7 for aosp and mikG for sense. They are both good. Kernels that are out for gingerbread are anthrax, lionfish, and a couple of others. If you want to go straight stock give tommytomatoes classic rom a go. He has tweaked that rom pretty good. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply....I'm still kinda noob on partitioning lol, what do you mean exactly by partitioning via recovery? Is that the whole ext4 thing?
If you are running the latest version of Clockwork mod recovery, you have the option to partition the SD card directly from the recovery. Hope that help man.

What do I do after I partition the SD card?
Partition your card 32/1024, once you do that your SD card should be complete. Partitioning your card will delete everything in your card so be cautious and backup your memory onto a computer

Yo,
So I've been reading various forums trying to figure out what the hell I'm trying to do to this phone.
Everything I come across is like trying to read a different language. First off, what am I supposed to copy and paste with a file manager? Then, how can I cloud store my apps Cos I am running out of space due to use of go launcher ex and its many space Hogger accessories...? and finally do I Have to use a computer to root/unlock my phone so I can have newuser permission? how do I do that????
I get easily confused because I'm very new to trying to experience the awesomeness of hacking my phone....Hit me up on Skype anbot3. Thx guys and gals.

it goes through just about everything.
I'd start by installing a smelkus Ra recovery and making a nandroid backup of your current setup
then root and get s-off
then titanium backup and backup all your stuff to dropbox
then make a copy of your sd card on your pc
then partition your sdcard and flash a rom and a2sd

good point, apparently my memory is lysdexic,
iirc, which I probably don't, I had boot 2.18 and rooted through HTCdev and then did a whole bunch of crap, and then did the s-off a couple of weeks later, although that nandroid backup is probably useless since the hboot is 2.18 and my current one is 2.10

You need to partition the SD Card if the Rom is A2SD enabled, and you want to use it. Yes it should be done before you flash the Rom. You should also find out what type of partition. Does the the Rom call for an ext.3 , or ext4 partition. If you are going to partition your SD Card you need to make a backup on the PC first. Partitioning the SD Card will wipe the card clean.

***You need to partition the SD Card if the Rom is A2SD enabled, and you want to use it.***

Yup, "backing up" and "restoring" is just fancy talk for copy and paste
And yes, the rom will still work if you do not partition your sdcard, but a2sd will not work

Not all Roms will work. If the Rom is built so that a2sd is enabled automatically, it will not work correctly. Things will be missing. You can have FC issues. In some cases I've had them not even Boot. So it is better to have the SD Card partitioned before you Flash if the ROM calls for it.

Alright sounds good ill give it a shot later on today then thanks again really appreciate the help
all the partitioning gets done thru recovery.
so where within recovery is partition actually done?
Hey guys, noob here. I am going to be flashing my phone today too.
Death by soaps mod seems to be what I am looking for, but I just want to make sure I am doing everything right.
I have turned s-off with revolutionary and backed up everything with both clockworkmod and smelkusmod and saved everything on my computer.
I am not 100% sure how to continue with partitioning and flashing though. Do you have a recommended guide partitioning and flashing with your mod? I have found some general guides, but they are for other mods and I dont want to screw anything up.

Ok. Simple.
1. Move everything on your sd card to your comp.
2. Use smelkusmod as its the best.
3. Go to partition card or something to that extent.
4. Set your desired size, 1 or 2 gigs is good enough, depending on how many apps you have/use.
5. Set swap to 0
6. Wait for it to partition.
7. Upgrade ext from 2 to 3 to 4.
8. Put all your stuff back on the sd card.
Flashing
1. Use format all/superwipe option in wipe menu of smelkus to wipe.
2. Go to flash zip or something like that.
3. Select the file and confirm.
4. Wait for it to do its thing then reboot.
Done!

Ok thanks, looks like I am up and running. I will report back if smell burning plastic or anything unusual :fingers-crossed:
If I want to mess around with any other mods is there anything special I should do first? Or just repeat the same steps (partition, superwiper, flash)?
Thanks again.

Nope no need to partition again. That's done. Also you dont need to wipe for mods unless the OP states it.
For Roms, however,(what you just flashed) always do a full wipe/ superwipe and if going between versions of sense and aosp, always wipe the sd ext.
For kernels always wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing.

As an extra precaution, I always wipe Cache / Dalvik. Before flashing a Mod.

So in sensuASOP it says to partition the sd card THEN flash the rom if i have the zip files saved on the sd card wouldnt i lose the zip file hence i cant flash the rom? Or do i flash rom first then partition the sd card?
