[APP] GalaxSim Unlock 1.02, JB compatible - Galaxy S III Themes and Apps

Back in business ! With an app to sim unlock your Galaxy S / S2 / S3 (and variants) (to use any other network operator).
A little background first. I bought my GS3 2 monthes ago. It was sim locked, but I didn't care as I read there was an app to unlock it. Unfortunately, what I didn't know at that time is that this method was not behaving the same way as official sim unlock method. And as you might know, sometime in July, starting from LG6 rom, Samsung added checks to prevent unofficial lock methods, that would relock your device upon each reboot. It looks like they recently did the same on GS2. So I took my favorite decompiler and started looking for a workaround. And here it is : "GalaxSim Unlock".
Now I won't lie to you. I won't tell you it will unlock your phone forever, as I can't say for sure. I won't enter into technical details, but I can't affirm that this app makes all the changes made with buying an official unlock code (at least, not yet). Why ? Because I honestly don't know what those changes are. So Samsung might add some checks in future roms that could probably relock the phone. Or they won't.
With my growing experience of Samsung's EFS, it seems however that they might not do more than my app, in other words, I'm starting to believe that this patch will still work in the future.
One thing for sure : as of now, this app does more than any other manual or automatic methods available, so your device won't relock with any currently available roms (post lg6, Jb leaks...).
So apart from buying an official code, that's probably your best chance to unlock your device for now.
*** FAQ ***
This app will :
unlock/unbrand your phone the best as my current knowledge permits to. Which is sufficient to run any currently available roms (including JB).
work on any existing rooted rom
support international Galaxy S3 i9300 (Us qualcomm based GS3 are not supported at this time)
support other Galaxy family devices (S, S2 and their variant) (not extensively tested as of now, drop me a pm if yours is unsupported or supported but not written so)
work if you previously unlocked your device with "voodoo unlock" or "galaxy s unlock"
work if you installed a previous ril (aka mike's patch).
warn you if you're using other dangerous methods
warn you if your imei has been lost due to any error in nv_data caused by a third party app.
give you detailed information about current locks status (be it locked, unlocked or "partially locked", ie unlocked with methods not compatible with newer roms)
backup efs before modifying anything (that should guarantee you a safe use)
enable you to restore your efs backup if you want to.
be updated when needed (I need it as much as you )
compute md5 files properly (no log hack)
support more galaxy devices soon
This app won't :
Restore your previously lost efs/nv_data/imei or any other magical stuff.
Support non samsung phones
*** Download ***
GalaxSim Unlock is now available in the Google Play Store here. It's free to download, with in-app billing to unlock, for what I believe is a fair price (I've made it that way so that people can see if GalaxSim Unlock is able to sim unlock their phone before buying).
Other features (device/lock information, nv error detection, efs backup/restore, efs export to a safe place like gmail or google drive) are free to use.
* Temporalily removed the xda version until more tests have been made and a new beta is released. *
In any case, I'd appreciate if you could rate the app on the Play Store.
*** How to use ***
Prerequisites :
Rooted rom
Busybox (found on the market and already present in many custom roms)
Install the app, click on "unlock" and reboot.
If it worked successfully and you want to encourage my work (either by supporting more devices or by improving the unlock in case of samsung new ril update) a small donation is appreciated.
Recommendations :
Even if this app makes a backup of your efs folder, you might want to make one yourself before using it (better safe that sorry)
Don't delete /sdcard/GalaxSimUnlock/ folder, it contains the efs backup made by the app.
You can use it with mike's fix libsec-ril.so, no need to restore another ril before unlocking. However, after your phone has been unlocked with this app, I recommend reverting to the ril provided with your rom / adapted to your radio so that the device's functions as expected.
You can use it on a device previously unlocked with "voodoo unlock" or "galaxy s unlock". However, if possible, restore a stock efs (or uninstall any other previous patches). It's not necessary, but this way, the efs backup made by the app will be clean. And restoring this backup will revert to what your phone was in its initial state, not an intermediate state.
However you need your .nv_core.bak/md5 (not one from another device found on the web). This is required because using nv_core (or nv_data.bak for the record) coming from another device is dangerous as you might lose your imei anytime in the future if your original nv_data.bin file gets corrupted.
What I would do coming from a previous unlock patch : restore efs, reboot (optionnal but recommended to verify efs has been correctly restored), unlock with the app, restore libsec-ril if needed (manually or by reflashing the rom)
*** Changelog ***
v1.02 (2012-08-24) :
improved error messages
added a check for busybox
modified some checks for more safety
added full product code string
updated supported models (and the warning on untested models is not blocking anymore. Although you should be safe thanks to efs backup, USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISKS)
added a "efs backup" button even if there was an error during prerequisite checks so that you can send me your efs if you want me to have a look at it.
cosmetic changes

*** Credits ***
This app couldn't have been made without the work of a lot of people before me, starting on galaxy s up to latest samsung devices : dawen, Helroz, and NWolf, txlibre, dagentooboy, Odia... (if you feel somebody should be added here, drop me a pm).

I believe you can use the app with no problem, it will warn you if anything is not safe. If you have any doubt and want me to check, just send me your efs folder.
@farahbolsey
Hey farah, long time no see !
@skivnit
The app will do it automatically before modifying any file. A manual backup is recommended just in case something goes wrong. Anyway, if the automatic efs backup in my app fails, it won't modify any file in efs, so that should be a problem, but well, you never know what could happen.
@zohawkish
lol I would not have warned people against the mod you posted, just to use it for myself My app modifies users files, so imei should be safe (at least the same than with other unlock app : obviously, if the battery fails during nv_data file write, it might be problematic, but here again, there's the backup).

After Voodoo and the Voodoo patch stopped working I unlocked with the efs hack posted by another member. Am I better off restoring my efs folder and using this method?

As far as I know mike1986 fix is a patch to libsec-ril.so found under system/lib and you can deinstall by reapplying your Rom (assuming it doesn't have the patched version) so I would suggest restore efs reboot reapply the Rom you use without wipe and then apply this app. During the process you may get locked but at the end works.

Yes, the best way would be to restore your efs before unlocking with the app. Anyway, my app won't unlock anything if the nv_core patch is installed (as the device would be already "unlocked")

I should clear that up in the faq. There is absolutely no problem using libsec-ril.so. You can perfectly unlock with it, if you feel safe as you won't have a "crack detection" and phone relock on recent roms upon reboot. It's just recommended to keep the ril adapted to your rom / radio afterwards so that the device's functionnality is good.
So the order would be : restore efs, [optionnal but recommended to verify efs has been correctly restored] reboot, unlock with the app, [optionnal but recommended] restore libsec-ril (manually or by reflashing your rom)

I know roughly what you are talking about. I know command prompt, although I never used fastboot, as I only owned X10 (until I dropped it and USB port snapped ), so never had to/wanted to unlock bootloader this way. But I want to learn, that's why I am reading all this now, and I need to ask about something I am not sure of.
Just go through the unlock bootloader process and then you will know what fastboot is
After that just type my comamnd with my file in the same directory and you will be done.

If I were you I would wait till I get ICS on the phone then unlock the bootloader and root the phone.
Quick question. It just wonders me. Sony "supports" unlocking bootloader, which is more dangerous than root. Why rooting is not supported then? Is it because we could unistall third party aplications and Sony has some sort of agreements with them and are obligated by law?

No you are getting the idea wrong
Long ago we discussed alot with SonyEricsson and together decided this is the best way of doing it.
The reason is simple:
Rooting alone does not give you access to all partitions etc. pp See X10 Forums for that. Sony is very good in hiding partitions
With a bootloader unlock we get fully workable fastboot. We are able to write all partitions and change what we want. (Root too)
Also Sony(Ericsson) is able to track who unlocks and who not AND is able to provide a check mechanism to forbid unlocking of phones which are not owned by the user (for example provider branded phones in contract, the phone is usually property of the provider).
So this is the reason. Unlocked bootloader gives us nearly full access, so no need to worry I am in this game since X10 times (like you or not ?)and we always got the phones working like we wanted.
Our work for CM9 on XPS has started now too.

See, I was not aware of that "agreement". Now everything seems to make sense. I am android user since I bought X10 back in August 2010. I was more or less following XDA since then as well, but this forum is worldwide community and is almost imposible to keep a track on everything. I would consider myself somewhere between rookie and advanced users. I know how to do certain things (root, how to use ADB, I was changing framwork_res.apk for my own purposes, etc.). My point also is, I am more hardware sort of guy, rather than software. That's why I am glad you guys are here with us.
Will this wipe the phone data or only the system partition ?

Well no. But the first step is that you need to unlock bootloader and THIS WILL wipe your data. To flash the systempartition itself will not wipe userdata.

So you restored with Titanium. Since Titanium is a Root app and you don't had Root before i think you are trying to restore a backup from another phone.
If you do that you have to assure that you ONLY RESTORE APPS and NOT SETTINGS! Settings from another phone will be most likely incompatible.
So this wil be your problem!

NEW: beta version available!

STABLE version: (a) XDA post, (b) XDA download, (c) Google Play download
BETA version: (a) XDA post, (b) XDA download
Description
This application REQUIRES a Galaxy Nexus (maguro, toro or toroplus), Nexus 4 (mako), Nexus 5 (hammerhead), Nexus 7 2013 (deb or flo), Nexus 10 (manta), OnePlus One (bacon / A0001), OnePlus 2 (OnePlus2), or OnePlus X (OnePlus / ONE / E1001), with root.
You've rooted your device, and you are trying to decide between the security of relocking your bootloader (with stock recovery and USB Debugging off), and the flexibility of leaving it unlocked.
You know that in order to prevent an unauthorized user from accessing your data by flashing a custom recovery, "fastboot oem unlock" wipes your data. This also means that if you relock your bootloader, you will need to do a full backup-and-restore whenever you decide to unlock it again.
BootUnlocker for Nexus Devices lets you have the best of both worlds by using root privileges to unlock your bootloader from within Android, without wiping your data. This allows you to keep your bootloader locked for security, with this application safely protected behind your lockscreen password. Whenever you want to unlock or relock your bootloader, just unlock your screen and run BootUnlocker.

I'm really glad you've brought this over to the Nexus 4. This is an excellent contribution to the community.
I have a small doubt and i hope you don't mind clearing it. I just got my N4 and i was considering rooting it, my doubt is that once i unlock the boot loader can i relock it? On my old htc explorer it was possible to re lock but it showed the status as re locked instead of locked hence voiding the warranty. Can i relock it and get my warranty back again? Sorry for a probably noobish question.

Thanks. So it's safe to root it then? Won't cause any problems with my warranty right?

If it's a question on being safe, I'm pretty sure most people with sense will always say "do it at your own risk" because we are concerned about your warranty. Nexus devices are the easiest to bootloader unlocked and root and flash and viceversa but the user still has to take responsibility.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
That's fine. I'll do it at my own risk! Only thing I was worried about was the warranty. Now that you say it can be locked again I don't have any problem! Thanks!

thanks for this. maybe put a a disclaimer like the one said in this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898664
advantages:
- doesn't require encryption (for those who do not wish to use it).
Disadvantages:
- relies on third-party apps.
- method will not work if you lose root access for whatever reason.
- method will not work when you cannot boot into Android for whatever reason.

i am quite new to this area so my question is, once I have relocked the bootloader, does the stock recovery allows for nandroid backup etc? and since in the worst case scenario that i am not able to boot, i have no other alternative other than doing a fastboot oem unlock?
thanks for your time!
The stock recovery does not do nandroid backups. You don't have to flash the stock recovery in order to lock the bootloader, but it is a good idea...

I've tested this app in my Nexus 4 and it works like a charm. Thank you very much!
Re: [APP][2012-12-24][root][N4] BootUnlocker for Nexus Devices -- version 1.3
I just want to confirm that this tool is working with the newest bootloader MAKOZ10o from the 4.2.2 OTA upgrade.

New version
New Version 1.3.1: Adds koush's android.permission.ACCESS_SUPERUSER permission
OP updated.
Sorry, not wanting to thread hi-jack here or anything, but this seems like the best place to mention it. If you've ever had the experience of rebooting to bootloader and you've forgetten to unlock in BootUnlocker first, or, you really screwed something up and can't boot the OS in the first place to unlock with the app, I made a recovery flashable zip that will do the same thing. Always handy to have on hand in case of emergencies.
Available in my Odds and Ends thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239421
Cheers! :good:
Edit: I see it answers all of @azrash's disadvantages list too.
Just a quick note to confirm that this fantastic tool works with the new nexus4 MAKOZ20i bootloader (android 4.3 JWR66N & JWR66V).

[Q] Need help rooting!

Hey everyone,
Just to let everyone know I am a noob, however I did watch a lot of tutorials on how to root the Xperia ZL. I am referring to this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31545627 However, considering I am a noob, i can't post in that thread. I am experiencing some problems when the Bat file won't push the Super User app and Busy Box to the phone. Are there other approved methods of rooting this phone. By the way I have a locked bootloader, and I do not plan on unlocking it. Very afraid of screwing something help.
Thanks.
Just to add, I am using v30 of Binary, and everything works fine until I get passed the "restore option." After I complete this and am told to go into "Service Tests- then Display" this is where nothing is happening, and I am waiting forever!
You can use the new flashtool (Flashtool version 0.9.10.2beta6) to root your new XZL. It's the easiest way to root XZL.

Yes, you still can root without unlocking ur bootloader.
Using flashtool u even can relock ur bootloader after u had unlocked it.
One tip after u rooted ur phone, please do a full backup including ur TA (this will ensure u still have ur drm key for bravia engine) incase you want to try to flash other rom especially AOSP base rom and getting back to factory default rom.

Basically, yes ur warranty is void if u unlock the bootloader because u need serial key to unlock the bootloader which u can get it by requesting from Sony website (u have to give ur phone imei number to get the serial key, Sony may blacklist ur imei number).
But if u can make it totally stock after u relock the bootloader (including ur drm key, this key is unique u can't flash others TA in ur phone, it will brick ur phone), and consider u r lucky (the Sony technician may not check the blacklisted list), u may claim the warranty.
This is only my logical thinking, u may need to validate my statement with others. I do not know whether Sony blacklist the phone imei if u request the unlock key. FYI, HTC blacklist the phone imei once u request the unlock key.

As far as I know you can't get back the drm key if you're not backup ur TA first before unlocking the bootloader. U may try to ask the owner of the phone, he/she may have the TA backup but even if he/she have it, I don't know whether you know that TA is belong to ur phone or not. I do not know how to check that, it may have imei number in the file to validate.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

An you are talking to a complete noob, so I do apologize, but TA? I understand I need to do a full back up of everything, I have done that before on other phones I have rooted. Just use Titanium backup for this, or is there a better app to conduct full backups. I haven't rooted phones in awhile. I had a couple Galaxy's notes and stuff that I rooted but I never did back-ups because I was just using them temporarily. So i've been out of the loop

Please refer this link to backup your TA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2234627
For full backup, i think you need CWM or TWRP recovery with stock kernel, please refer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2095
If you are very new to this, I advise you to read and understand completely before you start anything. If you want to install hacked games or tweak a system a bit better you just root without unlocking bootloader, if you want to taste AOSP based rom or addicted with ROM flashing unlocking bootloader will ease your job.
Good luck with your reading and happy rooting
The best method to rooting your Xperia ZL is this method I did to unlock my ZL phones, the easiest without unlocking the bootloader believe me.

Freaking Annoying Questions (aka FAQ)- LG Optimus G(Intl)

Ok, since there more and more users asking the most simple questions over and over again, I’ll try to make a resume with the hope we won’t have the section poluted with useless questions a million times. I’ll try to provide as much info as possible.
First, make sure you read carefuly and use search function. Your question may already have found the answer.
Second, when you try something on your phone, make sure you know how to undo it. Don’t rush into things without proper documentation. Ignore this friendly advice and you may endup being ignored yourself.
Third and very important :
ALWAYS MAKE AN EFS BACKUP, BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK OF DOING SOMETHING TO THE PHONE. It may save you alot of money if any procedure fails.
Now, the most asked questions :
1.Q: My E970/LS970 has a problem,help?
A: First, make sure are in the right section. This is not AT&T / SPRINT .
2.Q: How many models are outhere?
A: A lot. HERE is a list. If you have a new model, report it there.
3.Q: How do I make an EFS and MODEM backup?
A: Look HERE . Kudos to autoprime for efs backup. For modem backup and make it a flashable zip, see HERE. Credits go to user Dapaua.
4.Q :How do I root my phone?
A: There are several ways to root, FIDDY , FRAMAROOT, MOTOCHOPPER, DOOMLORD .
5.Q: Help, I get “security certificate error”
A: Well, it’s normal since rooting is only half of the problem .You will also need to UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER.This leads to next question
6.Q: How do I unlock the bootloader?
A: It’s easy, using FREEGEE app from playstore. Both free and donate apps work. But I suggest using the paid app, to thanks Shelnutt2 for his wonderful work. He deserves a beer.
7.Q: OMG, I received a message saying that I might brick my phone. What do I do?
A: That warning is perfectly normal. Don’t forget you are receiving warning even you install a simple keyboard from playstore. The app is safe, used by me and many others before you.
8.Q. Ok, i unlocked with freegee. What now?
A: To be sure, copy the backup freegee folder somewhere safe. I recommend cloud(box, dropbox, drive etc). This way you can restore your IMEI if you run into trouble.
9.Q: How do I flash recovery?
A: By using Fregee. In fact, when you unlock the bootloader,it will ask you to choose the type of custom recovery. My personal suggestion is to install either CWM or CWM Touch. TWRP was reported to give some errors and compatibility issues.
10.Q: How do I enter recovery mode?
A : Turn off phone, press volume down+power button. It will enter fastboot. Now press 2 times volume down, then power. The phone will enter recovery.
11.Q.What rom works on my phone?
A: See question 2 and HERE. Thanks xerxin for his work.
12.Q: How do I install a certain ROM?
A: Every developer gives the solution in his rom thread. Basicaly it’s the same : wipe data/cache/dalvik,format /system,then flash rom and gapps,if we are talking about CM/AOSP/AOKP based roms. On LG based rom, do the wipes, then install zip from sdcard.
13.Q: I tried custom roms, now I want to go back to stock. How do I do that?
A: Use kdz updater. HERE is how to use it. I made simple. Original thread HERE. IMPORTANT : IF YOU GET STUCK AT LG LOGO AFTER USING KDZ UPDATER,YOU NEED TO PERFORM A HARD RESET. After this, the phone will boot.
14.Q. I tried to use KDZ updater, but I get “file extract error”.What should I do?
A:First, make sure the kdz file is not corrupted. If the error persists, start kdz updater in windows xp sp3 compatibility mode, with administrator rights. User Svenskaslynan reported to work this way. This is for the files over 1gb. User Davevinci(kudos my friend) succesfully tested another solution. HERE it is.
15.Q: I flashed a 4.2/4.3 rom,but my files are gone.I only see a “0” folder.
A: Due to different ways of reading paths and the multi user feature on 4.2/4.3 , your files are located in /data/media folder. Use a root explorer (I use ES file explorer) to copy the old files in new location. Mount /system r/w first.
16.Q : I have a korean optimus G(F180). How do I convert it to E975?
A: We don’t recommend it. It has been reported to be troublesome(network and signal loss). Why didn’t you bought the E975 in the first place.
17.Q: I'll ignore your advice,I still want to convert to E975 my korean model. What are the risks?
A: The hardware specs are the same, the difference is made by 4G(LTE) modem. Asia is using different LTE bands than Europe. So,you have to flash korean modem from HERE .Thanks houstonn for his work.
18.Q: Help, i lost IMEI after converting my F180 to E975. How do i fix it?
A: You need to restore the EFS,which you previously saved.Right??Thanks to user davevinci,we have a solution for that too.HERE is how he did it.
19.Q. I didn't saved the freegee folder. How do i get my IMEI back?
A : If you don't have the knowledge(and you don't), you need a JTAG. This tool is expensive and you can find it in gsm services. If it's not illegal in your country, they can rewrite the imei.Of course,it will cost you some money.
20.Q: How do I convert my Optimus G to Nexus 4?
A: Simple : YOU DON’T. Different hardware(8mpx camera,8/16gb storage). If you do that, don’t expect support here.
21.Q: For some reason, I want to unroot and relock the bootloader. How do I do that?
A: Use KDZ updater. This is the easiest and safest way. It will erase any trace of root and unlocking. Do not try unroot from supersu. Of course, backup your files to pc first.
22.Q : I think I bricked my phone.What should i do?
A : First, you must check if the phone enters either in recovery or download mode. If you can enter in CWM, see TINYBIN . kudos autoprime. If you can't enter CWM,try enter download mode : Turn off phone, connect phone to pc and press power. Then, use KDZ updater. You know the drill.
23.Q. I can't enter CWM or Download Mode.What do i do?
A: This means only one thing: you ****** up your phone. 3 solutions for it : 1.send it to warranty and pray they will not see. 2.go to a gsm service and JTAG it. It will cost you some dough, but it will bring your phone to life. 3.if you don't have warranty or money, well, congratulations, you have a LG shaped brick.good for use as a presspaper.
24.Q: I'm having problems with X rom and Y kernel.What should I do?
A: Ask in the rom/kernel thread. It's more likely to get help there.
25.Q: Does this phone supports USB OTG?
A: Apparently not. For me, it worked on stock rom, but lost that feature after flashing custom rom. To avoid any useless questions about this feature,i had usb otg ON A TEST UNIT,which is NOT the FINAL product. So please, stop quoting this. It's OFFICIAL, we don't have USB OTG on Optimus G.
26. Q: Is photosphere working on OPTIMUS G?
A : NO, it doesn't work. Photosphere is not working on non-nexus devices. If you want that feature, buy a nexus. But i don't know how many times you will use it.It's a gimmick and nothing more.
27. How do i unlock my phone? It's locked on a specific carrier.
A: Unfortunatelly there is no way to do this home. You can either go to your carrier,a gsm service or use an online unlocking server. I personally used MAGICUNLOCK. Costed me 4$ and it was done in 15 minutes.
I'll edit this thread when needed. Would appreciate if you rate this 5 stars to be on top,so everybody can read it. Pressing the THANKS button would be nice too
Reserved for future
And another one,just in case.
Pls include this too... Ask the users to use freegee ly once and keep the backup of freegee separately coz when they use next tym they might lose the orig file... When bootloader is unlocked we cant able to flash kdz and it always end up with saying mobile not connected or something lyk tat... I've tried it recently.... So if user wants to relock the bootloader restore the freegee backup and to unroot mobile juz uninstall the su app and flash kdz....!!
Sent from my LG-E975 using xda premium
I never used freegee to restore efs. Only kdz updater to flash stock. This way i always get a clean, unlocked and unrooted phone. I will add something about keeping the backup somewhere safe though.

This is interesting. I heard the E975 can't supply power for USB devices. I can confirm that. How could that be? I mean how'd that worked for you?
Don't know. It worked, but with only 1 flashdrive. @hasan4791 , Meaning that it is better to unroot before trying? But what will happen if update when still rooted? Like will softbrick or simply failed to update?
@kimitza , Mind explaining why can't we unroot from supersu app?
If you are rooted, but not unlocked, you can unroot with super su. The answer was for those who do both root ans unlock. Only rooting gives highly chances of certificate security error and it's pretty useless. You can't install cwm(error),you can't remove some of the bloat(error avain).
That's why i always say rooting is only half of the problem.
About ota updates, when i was using stock, rooted and unlocked,i could see the updates,i could install them, but after reboot there was no effect.

well, im sure there are peoples out there who rooted but not unlocked just to use apps which needed root access (eg. greenify/titanium backup).
good thread anyway but IMHO, it would be better to state it clearly rather than tell people not to do this and that without giving the reason behind it.
for example,
Q: Help, I get “security certificate error”
A: Well, it’s normal since rooting is only half of the problem .You will also need to UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER.This leads to next question
your answer din't actually tell what caused the "security certificate error" and how to solve it, instead, you just tell them to unlock the bootloader.
i would have answer it this way: the "security certificate error" happen because you removed bloatware without unlocking the bootloader which triggers the security check built in by LG, search around in Q&A for "security error".
just my two cents
The security certificate error is caused by some apps which require root. When an app tries to acces a certain location,it conflicts with lg's security measures. Also, removing some system app may have the same effect, meaning the security the security checks by the system, looking for that app you removed. Without unlocking you CAN'T flash custom recovery. Should i continue? My friend,if someone doesn't have the knowledge, well,it should leave the phone untouched. All smartphones require some amount of brains to operate it. To hack/tweak/flash roms it requires even more. When someone asks about these things, they should really know what they are doing. Or at least have the basics. Not to mention they must read, use search function before they start. If they don't do that, well, see all the dumb quetions about problems that can be easily solved with a litle research and documentation.
This guide was not meant for those people, because no matter how many tutorials are there, they will simply ignore it and make things their way.wrong way. Then they start threads to cry their phones are ******* up. I will ignore those people from start. This guide is for those who want to learn something and do the things how it should be done. For the ignorants there is no cure.

older Xperia devices sometimes got issues after unlock of bootloader (BRICK after FOTA update) - you have been warned
why to unlock bootloader?
u can flash custom ROMs/Kernels
u dont need to worry if the new firmware can be rooted or not as with unlocked bootloader u can always ROOT ur device
Sony gives sneak-peaks/preview builds of latest OS which requires unlocked bootloaders, as they did with Xperia 2011/2012 line, so who knows may be Sony may give early builds of next android OS
Most of this is taken from lollylost100's his tutorial from ARC thread (all credits for that concise tutorial go to him, i have elaborated on a few things and added device specific changes)
btw i dont have this device, most of this testing was done remotely on a users phone... so thanks a lot to him for helping out!!!
[ before we begin unlocking bootloader ]
download the fastboot package
IMPORTANT: if you are using Windows 8 you will need to enable few things to allow driver installation
download the latest FlashTool Xperia Driver Pack and install fastboot drivers (common) & adb drivers for this device from the list!
make sure u have a windows PC with USB cable to connect the phone
power down ur tablet and keeping the Volume Up button pressed connect the USB cable to PC this will trigger FASTBOOT mode and windows will start driver installation, which should be automatically done
once drivers are installed just disconnect cable and power on device
[ how to unlock ] (official way)
Go to: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and read everything!
At the bottom click 'Start Unlocking the Bootloader'
First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your tablet by checking the service menu. On your tablet, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.
Click to collapse
after u have verified that u can unlock bootloader, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Continue"
you will get numerous prompts, read all info and if u agree click on "Accept"/"OK"/"Proceed"
finally u will get a "Create Unlock request" page, enter your IMEI (sometimes the last digit needs to be removed for this to work), name and email address
You should now receive your unique unlock key via EMAIL, SAVE THIS KEY SAFELY
Extract fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar and open fastboot folder
Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
Select 'Open command window here'
Connect your tablet in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold Volume UP button and plug in USB Cable) [make sure drivers are installed as explained above)
In the cmd windows type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
If a value is returned (it will return 0.5), it means the tablet is correctly connected
Type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY and replace KEY with the key which u received earlier.
You're device should now be bootloader unlocked
If this tutorial is too much for you then itskapil wrote a step-by-step guide (and recorded a video also):
-Instructions: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-unlock-bootloader-xperia-arc-play-neo-pro/
-Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRH3pC7MhEA
(the above videos and some steps are for Xperia 2011 devices, but most the steps are same for Xperia Z)
Relock procedure is posted here

Relocking bootloader
With the latest release of Flashtool it is now possible to relock bootloader.
Download the latest flashtool from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
Important
DO NOT USE ANY FTF TO RELOCK BOOTLOADER! THOSE OLD FTFs DO NOT WORK FOR THE 2013 DEVICES!!!
before u relock bootloader u have to be on pure stock kernel (flash only the kernel.sin using flashtool), else the device WILL NOT BOOT after relock
Steps:
now start Flashtool and click on BLU button
u will be asked to connect device in flashmode
once u connect the device u will get a prompt to "Relock"
click on it and when prompted disconnect the device
Want to UNLOCK again after relocking? read this!

Asking or telling..........either way, correct. TA needs root, to get root you need to unlock lol

No TA backup can be done, the guide is the same of Z1 that can be rooted withouth unlock.

It is very confusing indeed. In other words it actually says, do not unlock yet. Wait for an exploid to be found and released so you can root without unlocking the bootloader. Then you can safely make an TA backup, and then safely unlock the bootloader. If you unlock now, your warranty is void.

When a root exploit is found, unlocking the bootloader or backing up TA is not necessary anymore. (Except if one wants to install a custom ROM or custom kernel.)
Yes, but that's why we here. To install custom roms and kernels I mean..

OK thanks for clarifying that! I figured that was the case. And yes thats why I'm here, custom rom! This thing would rock with Slimkat or something similar (if it ever gets ported).
For all those who worry about unlocking I would like to cite Doomlord from the Z2 phone CWM recovery thread:
Dont worry I have been on unlocked Bootloader on all my Xperia phones and honestly there is no functionality that I missed.

Actually I have customs on all my device, but on z1 (same for z2) never needed one, just root and exposed framework+adaway.
About unlocking, as far as I know the only "useful feature" you will disable should be the bravia engine.
Bravia Engine (or X-Reality) is not "useful", it's just oversaturating and exaggerating colors in an unnatural way. A feature for noobs, just like "Beats Audio" is a bass-booster for music-unsensible juvenile oomph-oomph listeners.
So it can easily be discarded without ever looking back.

i agree on that but it voids your warranty.
Im not saying we should all wait till your warranty is over, but at least fully test your device before making a irrational decision, dead pixels, speakers, loose corners (have had 2 devices with that problem), waterproof test, etc...

True, last thing you want is to void the warranty and find out something covered by it goes bad. I can wait. This baby is running nice so far. Dont need custom rom, but im missing that root!!

That's the new rule implemented in kit kat, not Sony's fault.
This problem can be solved if root is available
Sent from my C6603 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
what s that rule? I have been using kitkat with omni since it released in note 2 nd hammerhead. initially it had issues with selinux, then i wrote a patch to omni source as well. but here selinux is not the bad guy I suspect something to QUCOMSEC nd drm keys. l have root, can u give me pointer to fixes. This s my first sony device so I have idea, Thank u

custom roms probably already coded it, thats why you didnt encounter the problem. Explanation of the problem can be found here provided by the OP.
If you have root already you can try both of the following,
*please note that Ive tried the xposed module on my Xperia Z running stock kit kat not Z2.
**please note, back up your stuff before proceeding, just incase something goes wrong and wipes your files.
[XPOSED] HandleExternalStorage requires Xposed framework installed. I am currently running this module and working fine.
[Playstore] SDFix: KitKat Writable MicroSD this was suggested by kingvortex in another thread, havent tried it yet, but the reviews seem to suggest it works.

Sorry - but I just have to add my own experience as a "noob".
First: I gave that X-Reality thing a deeper check; I had two Z2 tablets for simultaneously checking how HD videos look with and without that X-Reality feature.
I usually dislike all kinds of "enhancers", whether for audio or video enhancement. First things to switch off.
But I have to admit: X-Reality really works. The Z2 with the feature on produced a far more lively, absorbing experience. It's hard to tell what exactly makes the difference, it's just there. Among other videos, I used the famous Samsung "build-a-helicopter" video for comparison. Contrasts were better, details improved a bit, colors got slightly accentuated, became deeper. The slightly oversaturated color reproduction of the Z2 of course is there - but with and without X-Reality.
In short: Videos were just more fun and pleasant to the eye.
Best of all: You can switch it off; but you don't want to.
To be honest: X-Reality is THE feature preventing me from rooting the Z2 now. I don't care for DRM keys, I don't care for a true-to-life color rendition. But I care for pictures and videos looking simply better.
Quite lenghty explanation - but I guess this is an issue to consider prior to unlocking your bootloader and waving X-Reality goodbye forever.
Second: Beats Audio is a bit more than a "bass-booster for music-unsensible juvenile oomph-oomph listeners".
I seem to be a 45 years old "music-unsensible" listener. In fact, I am a former professional musician, knowing just a bit about sound.
I don't see anything wrong with utilizing software techologies to overcome some of the acoustic issues tiny smartphone or tablet loudspeakers suffer of. It's not just about creating that "oomph-oomph" redneck sound; it's about compensating the shortcomings of problematic speaker setups.
That's what devices like HTCs One clearly demonstrated.
I'd be quite happy if our Z2 had anything similar to offer. :/
So please try to be a bit more reluctant if it comes to demonizing modern features not everybody may like, but which will be gone forever if you go the hasty way.
