Hi Guys,
My Settings is showing i am having only 693 MB RAM.
I thought we have 1 GB RAM in our device
Can somebody let me know what is going wrong here..
Cheers!!!!
Wow seriously this has been asked... and should already be known. Some of the RAM is reserved for the OS. Just like on a desktop if you have 4GB of RAM not all is available

Uber, you don't have to respond like that. It isn't necessary. He was asking a valid question, and it is hard to keep up with forum posts that are here because the forum gets updated with new posts so often. And yes to answer your question respectively, the system reserves a certain amount of RAM, leaving the rest for the various processes on your phone

So I wonder how much better the phone would run if we had the full 1GB of RAM to use.
Probably nothing too noticeable.
Unless you actually consume all 693 or whatever your current ROM uses, I doubt you'll notice a large improvement. Better multitasking I suppose.

I meant, like, if our phone had 1.5GB of RAM, therefore, we would most likely experience a full 1GB of RAM accessible at all times.

I have no problems keeping up with the forums. Hell, I keep up with this and four other forums for the Galaxy Nexus and my old device the Samsung Epic. I agree with Uber, scrolling a few pages or a simple search would have provided his answer very, very easily.

16GB really equals 14.9GiB (GiB is the the way your phone calculates it). And 1 GB is really 0.93GiB.

Isn't some of the RAM allocated to the GPU? The Adreno 220 might require more RAM relative to the Mali as doesn't the Mali have its own dedicated RAM?
Just wondering.

Mine also shows 784mb. I think its all that Tmobile bloatware. I hear most of them are installed as part of the system so they are all taking up that RAM. It should be around 830 shouldn't it? if root is available this should be fixed right?

Yes, your correct. Android OS is built to multitask so the system has many different apps running in the background at all times to help certain system apps to loud up immediately etc.

The international and AT&T's Galaxy SII don't have all that crap on their phone. Ours has so much bloatware that's using the RAM that's why we're at 784. If you remove all the crapware that T-mobile put you'll get 837 too.
Mine shows 1.932GB of system storage.

Yep, that's what I'm seeing as well.
So I was looking at the ICS build requirements and saw that ICS requires 16gbs of ram to build lol. Unless I am misreading something, so much for nightly builds, that is going to take forever. Anyone have a supercomputer laying around?

Also, the theming is imbedded further in the framework which makes it harder on the themers as well. I have a friend who is working on a theme for the NS4G and he said it will definitely weed out some people because it is more complex. I believe he set up an 8gb build environment to make themes

Even trying to darken the background on the dialer is proving to be a challenge. One thing I don't like is that gapps (especially Google+) are really taxing battery life. I delete a few of them as soon as I flash a new build. Fortunately, the out of the box look is great on ICS. I will probably run rooted stock ICS for a long time when it comes to this phone.

Images in the drawable-hdpi and nodpi are actually less in ICS than our current GB's framework-res, which makes me think there's more smali/XML edits. It'll definitely be harder to theme for those with weak XML knowledge (such as myself).

I just bought a new system off of Newegg for $850
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600k 3.4ghz Sandy Bridge
CPU Fan: Zalman 2ball 2300 variable speed fan
Mobo: Asrock P67 socket 1155 motherboard
Ram: 16gb G.Skill Ripjaw Series DDR3 12800 ram
PSU: 730W Coolmax Modular power supply
GPU: Nvidia GTX 560
HDD: WD Caviar Black 1T
Already owned a Case, Optical, Mouse, Keyboard, and Headset. The most expensive items was the CPU $319 and the Video Card $239. Everything else was $40-$60.
How does such massive requirements produce such a small little phone os? Lol. I have a rig that can handle this if anyone wants to do builds over a network. But we would have to workout a time schedule is all.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Actually with TouchWiz on top of the ICS builds from Samsung it will not be much different. Most of the images are pulled from the framework rather than other places and you still have twframework with Samsung devices. It's not that it's more difficult, it's just learning where everything is now versus previous android versions.
And those requirements don't mean much, that's just if you want something done in a decent time, you really don't need all that power.
Got it covered, I have access to a few supercomputers + XCEDE / Teragrid. How's 7.3 TB of memory sound?

Would be a hard sell to a dev.
Essentially you would be asking "Can you waste your time porting an older OS to my phone that not many people will use, will provide no real benefits, and will require back porting drivers?"
Now if it did come out it would be cool (choices are nice) but I four it will come out.

I also wonder (cause many people compare the gnex with the s2 and say s2 is faster) I know the processors are a difference but not that huge of a difference so I wonder if gingerbread is what's keeping the s2 faster for or noticeably faster then the gnex with pics I wonder if ics will slow down the s2 as well. ICS slowing down the GN? what?
Gingerbread isn't even optimized for multi-core phones.
gnexus has to run faster with ics.
I believe ics is made for the galaxy nexus. to this specific device. therefore ics should definitely be faster.
putting gingerbread on this would be hard cause we only have on-screen buttons.
and you don't see people putting 2.2(froyo) or 2.1 or even below 1.6 on

absurd, both my phones are on stock and the phones never slow down.
I dont use a task killer and I never reboot the phones.
Just disable the annoying bloatwares and you should be fine. (I disabled 20 of them).
Well my thing is that with all the hype about this phone being fast and what not and having 2GB of ram, I shouldn't be having this issue. The phone shouldn't slow down to a crawl where it does nothing at all and I have to do a battery pull or if able, clear the ram.
I understand, I can flash CM10, which I'm running right now by the way and/or freeze the bloatware. But in order to use both these methods, you have to be rooted. What about the person that isn't rooted?
Because I sale/trade phones alot, I've the oppourtunity to own 3-4 other S3's and I experienced the same issues with them.
How about do not keep activities ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
you realize in that screenshot, he has 490MB free ram. Ram is not the issue for a slowdown. it doesnt get slower as it gets fuller. it gets slow when its FILLED.he would have to launch a game of Grand Theift Auto III completely into memory before memory would cause the system to slow down.
a possible cause would be kernel, or its settings. Stock kernel? ya sounds right.
Unused ram is wasted ram, or so I've always heard. It clears it as needed so I doubt that's the issue. My phone was pretty sluggish stock as well and I had a gb of free ram on the norm.

The thing with the limit to 4 processes is that once you reboot the phone it usually resets to the default(what I found). The slugishness is due to something bogging the CPU i think more so than the memory. I think there was a thread about the CPU either being stuck in low speed(sluggish) or other times it can be stuck in full performance(battery drain). There is a fix for it, maybe that would help you?

Its definitely not your ram. You have plenty left. Its almost certainly a rogue app(s) that is using a ton of CPU in the background. This also explains why the allow only 4 background apps settings change worked temporarily for you. I've known a couple people with same issue even myself once, very briefly and used one of many apps/task manager and could easily find that an app was using 40-90% CPU on and off in background without even knowing it. Killed the app and eventually uninstalled it and been fine ever since.

Uninstall it, reboot, and use it for a day to see.
mine usually stays at 1 or 1.1gb free - on stock rogers, rooted rom
0.95GB of 1.62GB, no slow downs here.
usually i stay around 800MB-1GB.
Thought it'd be a fun experiment to run benchmark test on The best dev backed up phone vs one of the top 2 android device to date, benchmarks are not to be taken too seriously as they are not to reflective of real world usage, plus some of you may say this test is un-fair becuase thr gs3 running 4.0.4 and g-nexus running 4.1... non the less your thoughts and opinions are all welcome!

Aw good you took it well but yeah I'm not one for benchmarks. Just ran a few at 1.6ghz just to see how it preforms.

Obvious results where obvious. Stuff like this makes me want to ditch my nexus. And lie to myself saying I will be fine without aosp. Telling myself the specs will make up for it.But those specs lie and I fell for it 2 years in a row NEVER AGAIN

I agree with you on the aosp... but even still the nexus in thoroughly defeated by the GS3 in my opinion and I'm not just referring to just hardware .... anything you can pit against a phone(except timely updates) the GS3 take the nexus down... in fact I made a video on it ... check it out and tell me what you think..

I stick with the nexus because of the updates and dev community. Spec wise it murders but the developmental on t mobile phones are so slow the nexus is the only way to get the experience i want. I almost bought a gs3. I went to the gd3 forum looked at the cm10 thread and there where alot of issues. I dont want to have to deal with that.
that got a little side tracked sorry
I feel ya

Lol still don't want a sglll, I don't care how much it "beats" the Gnex.

As you can see, the gnex benches at roughly half the score of the s3 on antutu, so there's no point in "racing" them. The gnex' other benefits more than make up for this though, IMO. Just my two cents.
Here's to hoping the next Samsung nexus device is just the s3 with aosp

I made the mistake of buying an s3. What a waste of money, at least I can still get decent cash for it second hand.
Benchmarks don't tell the real story ... GNex is far from being a slow phone and the Galaxy s3 is bloated with useless features and software.
