USB host doesn't work - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Guys, I bought a USB OTG cable today. Nothing special, but my GNexus doesn't want to work with me. No matter what I connect - USB mouse, keyboard, flash drive [w/ StickMount by Chainfire] - Nexus doesn't recognize it. Tried wiping and reflashing my ROM (CM10, today's nightly) but it doesn't help. I use Air Kernel, but flashing franco.kernel or using the stock one doesn't work too. It looks like there's no power in Nexus' micro socket. However, when I connect a USB hub with external power source Nexus starts charging. Any ideas?

You say that when you connect the Nexus to a powered USB hub, it starts to charge. Does that mean you have the USB-OTG cable hooked to the Nexus, then some sort of gender changing adapter to hook it to the USB hub? What happens if you plug the flash drive into the USB hub while the Nexus is "charging"? Does the Nexus continue to charge and you get access to the flash drive???

I just have a USB hub with a socket for power adaptor - it's nothing special. However, when and I connect anything to my hub while Nexus is "charging" it still doesn't recognize this device. I'm outta ideas.

Darn. I was hoping you had somehow magically discovered that the phone can charge itself while still being in USB Host Mode. That'd be absolutely fantastic!

Try it on stock JB, CM10 isn't even alpha. Plus, make sure any custom kernels you plan on trying support it.

I've tried CM9 stable a few moments ago - doesn't work.

Your cable is probably defective. I just bought mine, works great, but in reading reviews many people reported defective cables.

Just bought the second one - still doesn't work. Why?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1092493.html
Check out that link to see a potential cable problem.
The roms [cm9] and kernel [stock] should work for you.
Is the cable you are buying specifically stating usb otg on the package? If not, buying 2 cables from the same store of the same type won't change anything.
This is what works for mr.

The second one is different - I'n sure it's not the cable problem. Something with my software? I doubt it. Hardware problem?

I seem to get quite a bit of opposition to this but as you'll see there are links included..one from Samsung and if you look in the manual that came with phone, it also talks about the OEM chargers. Try disabling NFC then try yo charge. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841584

Do you know someone else with a Galaxy Nexus, to test the cables and ensure they do actually work?

It was suggested 2x in the thread to go completely stock [rom + kernel].
You stated trying CM10 and CM 9, as well as stock kernel, but you never say if you tested stock/stock.

Mkay, I'll try the stock JB tomorrow.

Accidentally thanked you.
What I'm trying to say is, AFAIK stock kernel doesn't support OTG. So try going stock then flashing a kernel.

Won't work either way.
That and most cable will work with Galaxy S2 but it won't work with Epic 4G Touch Galaxy S2. Although they are close they are not the same phone.
USB OTG is disabled on the Sprint version of the SGSII. MHL is only to split the USB data from the HDMI stream.
Do you guys know when it'll be enabled? I asked in a development thread for ICS to see if it could be added in the new kernel they are developing for it and got flamed by Jerdog.
I would love to have this as I use it a lot on my Xoom.

I'm using a Sandisk Cruzer 64GB flash drive and it's working great via USB OTG and StickMount on my stock rooted Galaxy Nexus. The only thing I still wish for is finding a way to charge the phone while using USB OTG. But that's another story...
Can someone please tell me where I can find out about USB OTG? For starters what does it stand for It sounds to me that it is possible to attach external storage. I am very interested! Is it possible to play movies/songs straight from the attached drive?
If someone can please tell me more about it and what is required that would be great!

Well since your rooted and rommed lol get stickmount from the play store. Buy a 3 dollars usb otg cable from Amazon and wham bam u got mountable usb drive as long as they are fat32 unless ur kernel has ntfs support. It will mount the drive into a folder called usb storage on your sdcard.

Not necessarily. On a fat32 can only put a 4gb minus 1 byte file on it. It is coded in a 32 bit format so that's why u only get a 4gb limit if ur files are smaller then 4gb then u don't have to worry. Ntfs will support larger files but I wouldn't recommended it on the phone.

I'd hoped that the pogo pin dock would do the trick but, unfortunately, it doesn't. I modified my dock so that I could access the USB port while docked and tried it, but no dice. If the flash drive is attached, charging doesn't engage. Or if you are charging, the flash drive isn't recognized.
There is a hardware solution in the USB OTG specification for an "accessory adaptor" device for allowing charging while using OTG, but as far as I've found, no one has built one and offered it for sale.

I'm not sure which ones are I'm sure they all will be fine.. I got a right angle usb otg cable because in landscape mode its not a nuisance.. Just spend three dollars or so and find out.. All it does is short two pins together to tell the phone its host. It's not hard to fudge that up lol

It's not damaged at all. The weird thing my observations are that there is not enought power getting to the adaptor. When I plug the adaptor in my friends Galaxy nexus running on stock rom the light on the adaptor lights up just fine, but mine just blinks for like a fraction of a second and doesn't connect. I'm also thinking it's the rom or it needs a new kernal ???
You need to check whether the kernel you're on supports otg.

Weird.. I've only seen power with hard drives that use the USB power. Can you post the exact make model of the adapter? Also, do you have a powered USB hub you could try? As in connect hub to phone, plug adapter into hub. That way the adapter most certainly is getting the power needed.
It also might be ROM kernel related.

While I haven't encountered any issues with sd adapters on the t989, it sounds like you're having either a power problem or that particular adapter isn't playing nice with your kit. You can rule out power by plugging you usb otg to a powered hub and testing with a high powered device (usb drive for example) and should that work, then trying the adapter. If the adapter works off the hub, it's likely a power problem. If not, the adapter hates you and loathes samsung, and wants you to by a nexus.
While not common, the adapter could be asking for a full 500ma even though it doesn't require it or is having some other isb negotiations headbutt with your gs2.
you can also try popping open a console terminal and checking what's happening under the hood. you should be able to see in the output of dmesg when you connect the adapter and what the kernel is saying about it, which will help point you in the right direction.

Try a replacement cable. The cables are flimsy and will allow the fine wires to wear and break. Already replaced 2 on my Amazon Kindle, before getting my Note 8.0. Right now I have a small stock on replacement enhanced micro USB cables for backup.

I never root my note, official ROM I guess, the original one since I bought it.
My stock cable screwed up after just two weeks. The micro connector was way too loose and didn't make a connection without a lot of jiggling. I replaced the cable (only) with one from one of my cell phone chargers and it works fine. Samsung saved a few cents by putting cheap ass cables on their chargers.
