Hi,
I'm an Android user for more than a year now and ever since I have the Galaxy Nexus the tethering is been giving me headaches. it seems to connect to my laptop but after a while it just stops to work. I can't browse any site or download anything from my laptop but this does seem to work on the Nexus.
I've resetted the phone to factory settings but this didn't solve it. I've also noticed that disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi tethering helps even though I do have connectivity problems sometimes.
is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
I'm on the UK 3 network and the Nexus is not rooted and the unbranded version.
before the galaxy nexus I was using the HTC Desire (rooted etc) but never had the same weird disconnecting issue..
I have not tried it yet

Yes, having the same issues here as we speak. All the issues and fixes above I am experiencing. I'm from Australia on the Optus network.
I put my sim into a Huawei E585 and had no issue whatsoever, so seems to definitely be a phone issue....hopefully a software issue which will be fixed soon as I its extremely annoying as you know!
I'm awaiting the 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 update now, this seems to solve several issues and they also mentioned tethering in it. let's just wait it out now
I haven't received any update on the Galaxy Nexus yet, still running 4.0.1, can anyone please verify if they are having issues running ICS 4.0.2 or newer on their handsets while tethering?
I wonder if the networks have found a way to remotely block tethering access? I say this because I have an HTC Desire on Orange which will no longer load anything when using Wi-Fi tethering.
My Galaxy Nexus is fine though. I'm on the One Plan with Three which includes unlimited data and tethering (says so in the small print of the contract). I'd say contact Three if you're on the one plan and ask for their help.

Guess you didn't really properly read all messages,
I don't have any probs if I tether from my desire, I have an All you can eat data on Three,
the thing is it just stops working and I cannot ping my Nexus from my computer. according to the change log for the nexus they did say to fix some wifi issues etc with updates..
So which version are you running???
I am running 4.0.2, Samsung galaxy nexus, and tehering is not working. Anyone have a solution to this problem?
Temporary solution: (Click thanks! )
Google knows about the ICS tethering problem and this is their temporary solution.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
You must "allow" you computer after you've connected to the hotspot. See this thread for more.
I am experience the same issue on my Galaxy Nexus, it's currently running 4.0.2 and Baseband I9250UGLA4.
my solution to the issue at the moment it's using USB tethering.
I suggest PdaNet, you can find it at Google Play and it's free =)
i am not using the stock wifi tethering feature on ICS instead i'm using FoxFi and at times the timeout issue will show up but if i restart the hotpot a few times, it seems to be working fine again...
i'm not sure if i am any good help to anyone but that's my experience...
FWIW, I have not had any issue with this. I tried tethering for the first time the other day with my Wi-Fi-only tablet for an hour and it Just Worked.
PDANET+ Beta 4.01.0 is currently working on the newest GA10 leaked, no root and on stock ROM. I've tested on USB and Wifi modes, verified it's working. However, if you are trying to tether 4G it will disconnects/loses signal, and forces a connection on 3G. Is anyone experiencing the same issue? I understand it's still in Beta stages, and GA10 is fairly new. I've also reported this issue via email to team PDANET.
I use version 3.00. It always works on any rom/build ive ran. Plus it tethers what ever data connection your phone has.

Hello all, I have been trying to find a working wifi tether for my Optimus G. I have tried the Wifi tether app, and it works, but once I turn it off, I can't enable it again until I restart my phone. It also corrupts my wifi driver until I restart my phone.
I have also used the built in wifi tether mod used within cyanogenmod(and it's modded roms), and it works beautifully, but I just don't like using the roms it's built into.
I have also tried Barnacle with no luck.
So, is there any other solutions to Wifi tethering applications(Not usb or bluetooth)? Is it possible to flash or remove the wifi tether part of cyanogenmod for use with the stock(or lifeless) rom?
Anyways, thanks guys
For stock ZVB, that's a flaw we have to live with still. Nobody has fixed it yet that i know of. WiFi OR Tether per reboot.
As for cm, i don't know. So i can't help you there.

Im making another thread in the Development section since people with the Nexus S dont care to even try to help with the Nexus S 4G people..
Short and simple is there any Jellybean ROM for the NS4G that has 4G Tethering working?
Please Thank "cloud9utk" for finding this! Post #18
Code:
ok, so i have a NS4G running CM 10.1.2-crespo4G. i run the matrix kernel v25-CM and have gapps.20130812 installed.
i was able to get 4G tethering running with Wifi Tether v3.4experimental1
here are my settings:
Profile: Google Nexus S 4G
Method: Netd-Ndc (master)
"Max Client" - unchecked
"No-tether" - checked
No encryption
Default SSID on default channel (set to 01)
wifi reload 1 - unchecked
wifi reload 2 - checked
all other settings default. you can enable access control and just allow your own devices.
works in 4G just fine.
oddities: when i analyze the wifi signals, all other modes go through without errors on the log, but the wifi never shows up in the Wifi Analyzer graph. but with these settings it shows up, but at channel 06. curious, but it works.
i haven't tried to change the ssid, because "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but i'm confident that won't mess it up.
cheers everyone! thanks for all the help! glad i could finally give something back!
PS: it works best when sprint isn't mucking around with their WIMAX network... also, i am on voyager mobile, not Sprint, but it is a sprint mvno. so $50/month unlimited tethering data. hmm..
In 4.1.2 most if not all rooms should be easy to tether off of with the standard wifi tether app I don't have the link handy but it's the common xda-developers one.
For 4.2.1/2 Google changed how tethering works... The only app I found that works is in the market for $. 99...It's called wifi tether router.. It eats most of the ram while running so one app like a music player or texting can be run at the same time but expect to reboot if you disable the tether and want to re-enable it... Also it bugs sometimes and has to be reinstalled... Wpa2 appears to work the best... I use it with slim bean 4.2.2 and it runs on wimax just fine. It does drain the battery at close to 1 percent per minute and beats out the charger in drain just be aware.

I am using the latest WiFi Tether I grabbed from Google and it has been working great. I have been tethering 2 laptops and my other phone on 4g and it hasn't disconnected once.

I could not get WIFI Tether to work with anything after 4.1.1 and the only way to get it to work was to go back to stock 4.1.1. What custom JB roms work with WIFI Tether?
What settings are you using with WiFi Tether? I too have not had any luck in getting it to work with a Jellybean Rom.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter
This is the only one that works for me currently wpa2 works fine

You were right. I was on 4.1.1 at the time and tethering 4g with no problems. I am going to try the link posted above and see if it works but WiMax is used so little now that tethering 4g might make me stay on 4.1.1 stock. I can customize the extended power menu and battery icons with Xposed mod so it may be OK if the above link doesn't work. I am trying them all on SlimROM 4.2.2 now
This worked for me...
Running stock, rooted 4.1.1 on Nexus S 4G. I've been running up against a wall trying to get tethering to work until I stumbled across this link...
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1661
Of particular interest was post #197 and the link to wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk
Be sure to change the device profile to Nexus S 4G. Voila! Tethering works!
(you should uninstall any other tethering apps you may have installed.)

Do you mean this works on 4.2.2 or 4.3? I had Wifi Tether working on the last Sprint OTA stock 4.1.1 but not on anything after.

I'm on Sprint OTA stock 4.1.1, rooted and unlocked, and have not been able to get tethering to work at all until Ifound the referenced link. I don't see why you couldnt try it on 4.2 and beyond?

Yeah I've tried to get Wifi Tether working on 4.2 roms but unsuccessful so went back to stock rooted 4.1.1, as it's the only thing that would work with Wifi Tether. This thread is about trying to get tether to work on a 4.2 or 4.3 rom.

Same here. I tried at least six different 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 ROMs and as soon as I activate a tether it errors out. I switched from the odexed stock 4.1.1 to OMJ's deodexed stock 4.1.1 so I can add in inverted gapps and re-odex. I don't know why data is not reconnecting once i turn on any tether app on 4.2.2 but I did get it to work twice which is driving me nuts
Well, on 4.1.1 I can tether on 4g and as soon as I posted my last post, I got the native 3g tether working on one of the newer CM builds... CM10.1.3 RC1 but only 3g as of now
Thanks for all the replies guys, I finally got internet in my house so im going to try and download a couple roms and give it a test for my self.. The only reason i wasnt doing it before was because i was terthering internet from my phone which was my main source of internet and it would have taken 2 hours just to download 1 rom
reviving this to see if anyone has gotten 4G tethering to work on at least 4.2.2

I just finished setting up my HTC One so I will go ahead and try and find a few newer 4.2.2,ROMs and try them. I already downloaded last night's CM nightly so we'll see. I mean it has worked before but I got frustrated toggling it 20 times to get it to lock.
Although I did add all of the 4.2.2 gapps to my 4.1.1 and I am fairly certain that it's all current...but what the hell, I have time today

Awesome, btw i was testing out Hellybean 4.2.2 because someone said they had tethering working in that (Seems to only be 3G Tethering tho)
But after flashing Hellybean 4.2.2, Native 3G Tethering works like a charm
After flashing gApps on top of that native 3G Tethering STOPPED working.(as in i can connect but no data gets sent to my computer)
Ive tried to replicate the problem 3 times so far and each time the same things happens so i believe i just linked the flashing of gApps to our tethering problem, at least the native tethering
4G Wifi Tethering Working on JB 4.2.2

Thank you for this, Ill have to give a try later today when i download the rom. Ill report back with my findings

all to do now is see if the matrix kernel is not needed. Thank you so much again!!!
Hello all, I just recently purchased a Unlocked T-mobile galaxy s3 that im currently using on straight talk. I have it rooted on the 4.1.2 jb version and cant find anything to help me get tethering working whatsoever. Any insight on what I can do to resolve this would be very much appreciated as im about to tear my hair out! Thanks
Try the tether apps from play store. If they can't help then see if your straighttalk plan prohibits you from tethering. As a last resort, you can switch to a AOSP Rom. All of these roms do have built in Tether that works the first time.
I don't do tether and don't use stock Rom, so can't help that well.
some time ago, i used an app called easytether. check it out.
easy tether and wifi tether
I've tried both easy tether and wifi tether, both to no avail, I can connect my computer to both but I don't receive data. Don't have this problem with my old galaxy s blaze. Even tried pdanet, same issue, does upload but no download for any of these. IM completely stumped at this point.
