Custom ROMs. There's a camera mod that you can flash if you are unlocked with custom recovery that will let you do this, and greatly improve overall camera quality.

if u use viperx ROM then u can choose any of the 3 capacitive buttons to take pics too

I tried the mod and it not only allows that but it also allows you to increase your image res. and your bitrate for video recording.
Only problem I've had with that MOD is that if you disable the burst limit (from 20 to unlimited) it'll crash around 30 pictures or so.

if i am not mistaken... you can use mp3 media converter apk or myview player&server apk for convert any file to mpg4 format (are in the market)... but record a video directly to mpg4 u can´t....
and if i understanded that you said (You have given little information).. you want to click vol- for to do photos?mmm i thing that u can´t too
EDIT: why you not convert files into your PC?its It is more comfortable

if i convert it after that i've make it is too later because the quality off 3gp recording is less than mpg4...i've read that with cyanogen mod i can record in mp4 but this mod haven't sense features, and i don't want lost this sense features.
For the other question, yes i would like to do photo and video with vol- or vol+ i see this feature in some apps, but this apps is no really good for do photo/video or for example don't make photo at 8mpx

Yep I know exactly what you mean. On CM7 autofocus doesn't work for me at all when recording video and there is no tap to focus, the best feature on Sense camera app.
I've also tried many other camera apps and they all are missing this feature and lacking for the most part. Camera X or Camera Zoom FX has the ability to use volume buttons to take shots but both apps lacks anyway.

for the photo yesterday i've tried about 10 app for make photo, all at the last version...camera zoom fx is the better...i've also flash my phone with coredroid hd mod that improve the camera performance...symply wonderful

I'm new to the Nexus, I just got it today. Had a HTC Sensation before.
I LOVE this phone! It's amazing! Everything is just so perfect! The one thing which bothers me is the Camera. Which I do use, a lot! Even my Sensation didn't have a nice camera itself but I remember my super old K850i! It used to take such crisp shots!
Any way to improve the shooter's performance?
You could decompile the camera and look for some delay or speed values in the code?
I will do so when I have time.

How would editing the Speed/Delay values help? Better focus time? :\

Doesn't work on stock gsm 4.0.2.
I use an app called Camera Zoom FX from the market. It takes much better stills than stock. Costs 3 bucks though, but you can test it pretty thoroughly and get a refund if you don't like.

Look for the app camera ics in the market. Improves quality and uses the 4.0.4 camera app as a base

I use this as well
Camera Zoom FX doesn't make any impact. I've done some pretty extensive testing and unless it was something with my phone, there was almost no difference or there was no difference whatsoever. Couldn't notice anything at least.
this tweak for camcorder (from euroskank ROM) increase the average bitrate:
extract media_profiles.xml from media_profiles.xml.zip and place it to /system/etc
you can customize this file to fit your needs

I installed the CM10.a9 a few weeks ago on my HTC One X and till now I was missing / unable to find two functions.
The first thing is, that you normally can take pictures while recording movies (both in HD), but I could not figure out, how to do this in this particular mod. The second problem is, that I didn't found a way taking multiple pictures with just one click. I know that I was able to do this under the original firmware with just holding the button.
Are these features not implemented yet or am I just too blind to find the functions?

PS: Sorry for my bad english.
Those features aren't present in the stock cm camera; you'll need to use an alternative camera app if you want those functions. LGcamera allows you to take photos while filming, and also has a burst mode (although you have to select that mode rather than just hold the shutter button to automatically activate). I'm sure other camera apps will give you similar functionality, I don't really use either function so I've not looked to much into it.

well , u can use " lgcamera " app.. search on play store without spaces and quotes
thank you! it works... but not so well. i mean you have to keep pressing on the screen to focus (it doesnt do it automatically with the camera button) and after the first focus you have to press the AF symbol to make it autofocus again (with the flash ofc).
its not very good but i will use it in hard spots where its a must!

Yeah it has this problem and is buggy and laggy , its pics aren't as good as stock etc etc.. But its the only one with flash assisted focus..
You can use focal. In focal you can turn on your flash in a flashlight mode, and then it lights permanently!
i use camera 360 for that! (many camera apps do what you say). the bad thing with that is that you will blind everyone xD

already existing..install one mod somewhere here on Pixel 3 XL threads, search for Sanity Google camera apk and enjoy I got shots at night with zero noise ,much better even than with pro mode of other phones i got . Also at daylight shot, the picture file it's twice bigger with much more details and les noise.Only difference from original camera it's The just a little bit of warmer images ( most of times I prefer them I dunno why )

This is the mod you need to install first. (you will have feautures like shutter speed till 60 seconds,iso 50-12540 as i remember)

I had conversation with Cstark27.
What I understood.
Mods like from San1ty, Arnova, BSG, Tolyan have crashed native Google camera algorithms of photo making.
Like details(Super Res Zoom algorithms), colours, shadows, hue, saturation, white balance.
Also render algorithms like HDR+, Super Res Zoom.
I know only Cstark27 mods, which are not crashed them. But his mode didn't have options, I wrote in firts post.
For me important to keep in mod last developments from Google, like Super Res Zoom in basic mode instead old HDR+. And expand Google photo with features from first post.

Imagine that on original application photo can produce an image file of 5MB when the gcam create a file of 10MB (i have got also picture of 12MB with much more details and clear image of course)
