If fast charge makes it charge faster then why wouldn't that be the default way to charge in a rom? What's the downside of using it?
Btw I just realized this isn't in right section, my bad. Move it if you'd like

Fast charge is used when you're charging from your PC's USB. This makes the charge time similar when charging from a power outlet. So essentially it only helps when charging from your computer by increasing charging speed.

When fast charge is in use, you won't be able to access your phone from the connected PC via the USB.

It's also nice when using a charger or cable the phone doesn't think can do >500mA. I have an old charger at work that is like that. Fast charge allows me to use the full capacity of the charger.
It's not the default because some computers behave badly with it and you can't do adb/media etc when it's enabled.

I was able to charge my sgs2 yesterday at work through the usb port. It might be the phone, or maybe the usb port you are trying to use doesn't have enough juice to charge the phone? have you tried another usb port on the computer?
usb will always charge really slow compared to an wall outlet
Yes I have tried multiple ports, computers, and cables. Oh well, I guess I'll live with it.

USB supplies max 500mA. Is probably half what the wall charger is giving you. Nexus S is only 750. My guess gsII is 1000 (1A). iPad charger is 2A.
Edit: no a higher power one than the stock charger won't charge the phone faster in a noticeable way. Charging circuits in remotely modern phones limit current to that safe max. If they don't you're probably risking damaging your phone.

I understand that the USB on the computer is weaker. I was surprised to see that when the phone was connected to the computer, screen on, and streaming music that my battery was actually reducing slowly. I would expect the opposite and this behavior seems abnormal.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
that's exactly the reason why in car i use the 2A charger (2000 mAh), and in house i use 1000 mAh wall charger
if i leave it at the computer USB charging, i've to keep it iddle for it to charge after like... 4+ hours
that's usually what i do at the work place, so i keep the battery topped up, for when i need to jump back in the road
as long as you have WiFi on, or 3G/4G on, or if the CPU is in high activity, you'll never see the charge ever reaching the battery.
i always keep a spare wall charger at the office as well for times when i need a quick charge
Thanks for the input everyone! I'm glad it's not defective cause I love this phone!

My issue is a little different but decided against another thread. My phone will not charge with any other cable. Has to be pluged in to oem cable. I left it all night on my old phones charger and woke up with it almost dead. Plugged into oem it just charges super slow. Should i take it back?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Does the other micro USB cable work with other devices? If not, might be a defective cable.
On a side note, who prefers to charge via 500mah vs 1A? I have been charging my phone since day one using my printer, as well as my old Iphone. My battery performance is great! +24 hours on a single charge with moderate browsing 50/50 wifi and 4g. I typically enable the "power save" feature with minimal brightness and 15 sec screen timeout.
I worked on other devices

[Q] Charging problem
I have an issue that has popped up today. When charging through PC, the phone (not battery) is getting pretty hot and losing charge. I'm not sure what could be causing it. I stopped all extra processes and turned off the screen. This is not occurring when the phone is off.
Hey guys,
So I made this rather funny discovery (not surprising though). I have an OTG cable for my Gnex to read USBs, out of curiosity, I plugged in my USB data cable for a Galaxy tab 7 (P1000).
Since this tablet doesn't really have USB host functionality (unless I have like 300 cables and a power source), my Gnex was charging my Gtab :\
If I were to get a new tablet (which I plan to later), could I choose which device to charge which device? Say e.g I want to charge my phone using my tablets power. I ask this since newer tablets have host functionality.
Thanks
Bwahahaha. I have visions of a short guy bringing a tall guy a ladder.

it's not going to work, you can't output power through MHL or host(im pretty sure) and besides the voltage would be to messed up to charge. so no.

I see your point, the charge provided by USB host wouldn't be that high anyway...
Would be a cool function to have though right? I've been caught in situations where I wish my tablet could charge my phone ...

Yes you can output current through OTG, so it is not a wonder that you can charge your tablet. Otherwise you could not even use any memory sticks and such.

I doubt the GNex can output enough power to charge the huge tablet battery at anything but painfully slow 1% per hour process.

Moreover, the Xoom cannot be charged through USB...
But I like the idea to charge the GNex through the tablet. It's got quite a large battery. Two actually.

The other way around works just fine with my XOOM. My XOOM can charge my old N1 and my new GNEX just fine... XOOM has like 3 times the battery...
Seems like that any new tablet I get then would be able to charge my phone then
I won't be charging my tablet much, most likely tablet charging the phone e like you guys have mentioned!

Does anyone else have a problem with the S3 taking at least 8 hours for a full charge?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Mine charges fairly fast and takes around 3 hours. Are you using the stock charger that came in the box ? I find that charges fastest as its 1 amp. But my blackberry charger and other micro usb chargers take a lot longer including my car charger. Usb charging from pc will be slower too. If not using stock charger give it a try

Yes I do find my S3 taking a long time to charge. I am connect my phone to my computer USB, not sure if using the adapter to plug in a while would make any difference. I so notice the battery sometimes gets drained pretty fast, then other days the it is pretty good.
Thanks guys, yeah I use my stock charger but I do use a USB extension so that may be the culprit but the extension worked fine with my Atrix 4G. I don't know but it is rather annoying waiting that long for a charge.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
The charger that comes with your phone is 1amp, and your computer's USB port is 0.5amp, which is why it's taking twice as long to charge. It should only take about 15 minutes to charge each 10% under 90%, and 30minutes for the final 10% (about 3 hours total)
Also, when on 0.5amp, if the phone's display brightness is set to 100%, it will barely charge at all, and even discharge under some conditions (gaming, etc)
Charging times on 0.5amp, 1.0amp, and 2.1amp chargers
Yeah, it takes way longer for me... Not sure what the problem is then. It did it even when I was running stock software. Thanks for your time, I appreciate your help.

If your USB extension is just a charging cable, and not a data cable, then the phone will not think it is plugged into an AC charging outlet, and only allow the 500mA data port limit. The USB port has 4 wires, the middle two are shorted together to show that it is an AC charger, allowing the full 1 amp(or 750mA as some say), but if your extention is only a charging extension it wont see the middle wires shorted, think its plugged into a computer USB port, and charge at a Max of 500mA

Hello there,
I had bought the Samsung Galaxy S3 pretty much a week after it had been stocked in the shops. I got it with T-Mobile on contract and recently it takes like 4 hours to charge the phone through the PC, I'm currently sending the wall charger back with the 2 year warranty that European Trading Standards give as it doesn't work at all with any device.
Little Bit Information:
Rooted: Yes
ROM: CyanogenMod 10 (Latest Nightly)
USB Charger: The one that came with the phone
Please could anyone suggest or tell me how to fix this horrendous issue,
Much appreciated,
Thanks,
Josh
Plug it into the wall instead of your computer. Most newer devices (like the iPad, for instance) take forever to charge through the PC, but charge very fast from outlet. 4 hours through the PC sounds about right.

AKA: I have no plug charger...
Hope I'm wrong but i don't think there is a solution for you then, it requires a certain amount of voltage or amps to charge at a normal (wall charger) rate. Maybe try a ps3 or Xbox it might put more power out?

go to store buy adapter...this is not an issue with the phone it is an issue with you not having the proper accessories
You could use ktoonsez kernel. It has a fast charge option for usb charging. There is a warning it may cause damage to usb in rare cases but I do it all the time never any issues. May be a temp. Fix til you get your new wall charger.

If you're stuck with a PC USB port, best thing is to just do a slimming down. In my experience streaming music or video is the biggest killer, at least on wifi.
You have to remember that when you charge from a computer your phone connect to it and begains to communicate with it. Even without doing any file transfers it still connected and using more juice. From my understanding the fast usb charging on the kernel mentioned turns of the transfer ability to increase charging time. If you dont want to wait for your replacement then go buy one from walmart.

Get a kernel which supports fast charging. Faux and ktoonsez I know for sure has it. Charging is like half of what you said and 2 hours when screen is off

Hi I understand that laptop usb ports only giviing out 500mah and the charger we have gives out 2 amp, and charging via USB port from the laptop will be really slow based on my previous experience with other android phones.
Have anyone try charging the note 2 via a USB port and how long does it takes for a full charge? Just a curious question.

i find the cable quite annoying to be honest, it unplugs itself with any movement and it takes ageeeees to charge but i guess its a good thing because the batt does hold up quite a while. Need something faster tho as im always on the move

Nope. Just regular USB 2.0.
Are you using your phone whilst it's charging? I'm not, except to check an email when one arrives...
Best thing to do is to close wifi and lock the mobile or even completely shut down the mobile if u dont neef it while charging, it will charged faster this way..

I use Android Revolution ROM with Perseus kernel and it's quite faster, but I think this kernel makes the phone draw 900mah instead of 500 so maybe it's because of that.
Sorry. You are all misinformed.
Usb gives .5A in dumb mode.
When the device talks to the host and asks for more, very often it will get 1A on older computers and 2A+ on newer ones.
Some even have a yellow port that gives 2A even when the pc is off.
So theres no simple 'chargin on computer usb' its damn complex. Only if android showed amps its getting....
My nexus one had 'spare parts' app that showed charging was either usb or ac, meaning .5A or >.5A
