A friend of mine is asking me to root his phone and install CWM to flash a stock gingerbread rom he currently using stock Froyo.I have not flashed recovery on Htc before i have experience in flashing rom on Motorola Atrix. So I want ask whats the procedure for installing roms on htc because on atrix i had first unlock the bootloader to flash recovery for flashing rom. Is the bootloader of htc desire Z also locked if yes how can i unlock that and whats the method of rooting the phone.
Also recommend me good stock ginerbread CWM rom that i should flash after flashing recovery.
Thanks
Yes, the bootloader is locked. You need to root and “s-off” the phone. I think this guide is up to date (correct me if I’m wrong):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
What do you mean by “stock gingerbread CWM rom“? You mean stock ROM without any modifications flashable through CWM? You can choose the appropriate RUU for your area here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19101396
and create a flashable zip using Android Kitchen.
Or you can choose some other ROM, look here"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1493365
PS: Don’t be afraid to use the search function. That is all you need, believe me
yes i did use search but found nothing about bootloader and for rooting their various method.

It doesn't matter if you have 1.82 or 1.72, you still need to downgrade to 1.34
Maybe this guide will help you more:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting
Remember, you cannot skip the step "Downgrade to an exploitable Firmware"!
Also you should have some ADB experience and you should be familiar with command line tools.
Good luck!

You need only to create a GoldCard. Follow only the first part - "Part 1 GoldCard" from the guide "Debranding Bell Desire Z".

I have done S-OFF, PermRoot and currently overlocking on my unbranded European Desire Z, but I need to send it back to HTC to repair my phone with some hardware issue under warranty.
What do I need to do? I have seen some guides here but they are all for the T-Mobile G2, and am worried if I follow it it will brick my unbranded European Desire Z.
Just unroot and use an official image! Then everything should be fine.

BAD. NO. YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE.
Flash a stock rooted rom first, THEN follow unrooting steps. There's a thread around here somewhere.

It's only bad if you have S-OFF only via the eng hboot (not gfree), and if you are trying to downgrade your ROM.
If you have S-OFF via gfree then you're fine, just flash the stock ROM back on. Then undo gfree via its options to set S-ON (see the Wiki).
Unfortunately my phone used the S-Off and Root using the old 'hBoot' method I followed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9143423&postcount=3
So what should I do?

What ROM are you running exactly ? If you are still on the stock ROM, and you flash the exact same version back, it will be ok.
I've made no mods prior to this. It was a brand new Desire Z so it was all stock.
Then I did the following:
Rooted and s-off via engineering hboot
Installed Visionary and applied Permroot
Installed ROM Manager for Clockworkmod
Flashed gtrab's godspeed 1.4ghz module via Clockworkmod
How should i go about this now?
Thanks.

You sure about that, Sherlock?
I'm not trying to hijack your thread so please know that but I want to make sure. I thought I could just use the unroot thread to unroot (thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835971) should I need to but it seems as if I need to flash a rom now looking in this thread so just to make sure:
1) I rooted my phone via this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
2) I installed clockwordmod and made a backup.
That's it! I'm going to freeze some apps in a min using Titanium but not uninstall them.
SO... question is, should I need to send my G2 back, what unrooting steps should I take exactly? thanks!
*edit* Ummm MORON* (me) this thread is for the Desire Z NOT G2 which is the phone I am talking about. Sorry, smh! *

This link is first of all for the G2 and not the Desire Z and it is rather old.
But the principle is the same.
- Get a stock rom RUU file that fits you phone. See http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Vision
The version of the rom that you select should be equal or higher to the last stock rom that you had installed.
- Install the RUU file from Windows
This will bring everything back to stock and remove root.
But the phone will still be S-OFF and Super-CID because the rom does not change the radio config partition.
If you also want to remove S-OFF you have to use gfree again and set secu_flag = 1 and the CID to your original CID (see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#radio_S-ON_and_original_CID for a guide on how to do this.
But the problem is, that you can use gfree to restore S-ON and CID only on the Desire Z stock rom version <= 1.34. So you will have to do the downgrade procedure again. Then do the gfree restore and then install the stock RUU that you would like to have.

Awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for.
The only question I have is: when you say use the RUU from windows won't this brick or semi-brick my phone? I'm just asking this because I read a lot of posts about flashing a stock rom with root and don't (obviously) want to end up with a brick...
Cheers
I found a forum where there talking of rooting Wildfire S (Htc Marvel)
Unfortunatly , this forum is in Chinese language.
There is the link with google translate : http://translate.googleusercontent....1.html&usg=ALkJrhgeEKjydt_I6ck9muCipyxUwFujLA
Hope there is going to help root of Wildfire S
The Wildfire S can already be rooted by using Gingerbreak.
Only if you have S-Off device ... With XTC Clip... We search to do without the clip.

Not really. It can only be rooted with GingerBreak on some firmware versions. For instance, the Bell Canada Wildfire S has a very recent firmware version that can't be rooted with GingerBreak. They fixed the exploit.
Here are the Chinese instructions to root the Wildfire S. It's pretty clear and straightforward and only works with S-OFF. I haven't tried it yet though
http://bbs.xda.cn/thread-7706280-1-1.html
(translate it with Google Chrome, just right click and "Translate to English".
Or the fully translated link:
http://translate.google.com/transla...n&u=http://bbs.xda.cn/thread-7706280-1-1.html
By the way... "brush" means "boot".
I am attaching the root.zip file they used to root so you guys don't have to register on the chinese forum.
The process is basically boot into recovery and flash that file.
I have recently bought a Wildfire S with 2.3.3 ROM. Can I root it by flasing the root.zip?
Will I not brick my phone?
Is it a permanent root?
Thanks for answers, in advance!
The zipfile appears to only have files for /system; so your bootloader and recovery is unaffected. Even *if* it bricks your phone, you can reflash a stock rom without problems.
In other words, there is *zero* risk in trying it out yourself.
Do you know what the Bell one can be rooted with?

Currently it can't be rooted with GingerBreak nor SuperOneClick. I haven't tried the chinese method specified above because I haven't seen my girlfriend in a few days and she's the one with this phone.
Why not just install a custom recovery and then a rooted ROM instead, would make everything so much easier.

Yep, but I don't think the chinese method is complicated at all. We'd have to try it first though. I haven't found yet a rooted ROM for this phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186354
If you look in the code box it says it has root permissions with Superuser installed.
it have been rooted
Tested on stock European ROM (S-OFF with XTC clip) and works perfectly. Just flash it with the custom recovery and reboot!

Hi, please try to follow the below steps:
1- Download the rooted GB rom from the below links:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/75c4qkci2cl4jbt/DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1_STOCK_rooted_by_nitr00.7z.001
http://www.mediafire.com/download/82gaj5rfosp9p6c/DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1_STOCK_rooted_by_nitr00.7z.002
2- Follow the guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221039
That should take you less than 5 mins to get s-off.
Hey,
If you want to root your DHD you need to follow these steps :
1. Update your HBOOT to 2.00.0029 using this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40744357
2. Then unlock your phone using HTCDev.
(From step 3 and after it's better that you follow the guide here under)
3. Flash CWM or 4ext recovery.
4. Flash SuperUser
5. Reboot and your done.
(This is not for S-OFF, S-OFF has became kinda hard because AAHK retired)

the guide was really easy to follow. the step by step on tacoroot. just make sure your sdk is up to date and add the path in advanced system settings "environment variables" for platform tools. make sure miniadb_inc2 is on root of C drive. follow steps. I think the little details can really throw some one off. It happened to me
But yeah I got S-off flashed the ICS firmware for the new radio 0320
Running Viper ROM 1.3.1
Well when ur flashing custom kernels or firmware its a lot better to be s-off that way you dont wind up turning your phone into a paperweight. Besides a lot more customization can be of use with s-off vs unlocked boot loader. Hope this helps.
