A: Gnex nfc battery problems - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I keep seeing questions pertaining to charging and/or heat with our batteries. I myself had this problem and Google extensively until I found the cause.
First, it's NOT your charger. It's NOT your phone. It is in fact the nfc technology in the battery. Unlike the NS4G, the GNEX nfc chip is inside the actual battery. You cannot use someone else's charger. You cannot put a non-nfc battery in your phone. You cannot put your battery in a non-nfc phone, and even risk problems if you use a non-oem nfc battery/phone except the ones they were originally paired with. You cannot use a gsm nfc battery with a cdma one. Doing any of the above will potentially cause all the issues people are having and even render the nfc capability useless and then a replacement phone is required unless you don't want to use that feature.
The battery has a "key" of sorts that has been "programmed" to the original device. If a battery with a different "key" is inserted the battery is unable to read the information properly. If you use a charger other than the original one you risk a different amp/voltage than the battery is supposed to have so the next time you put your charger in it won't work. Does anyone remember the NS4G not charging if you used a charger other than Samsung? Once the nfc is ruined, it cannot be fixed..the chip is inside the battery. Luckily I didn't "break" my chip and was able to charge it fully then wipe the stats and go back to my original charger without further issues. Included are some links I came up with for reference. http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-t/430774-non-oem-battery-upgrade.html

Yes...there are different devices talked about in these links but the point I'm trying to show isn't the phones. It's the common denominator nfc and the issues they all are having. I had the charge and overheat problem back in April/May. My phone would get so hot it was practically burning me. It would say not charging when plugged in and would have to power cycle then charge to make it work. I tried other chargers and eventually they stopped working also. I don't have this issue anymore. I googled this stuff months ago.

Cool story bro to the website.
It's proven that the NFC chip is in the motherboard of the Nexus, battery is just holding the NFC antenna

This says under battery.. regardless it's causing a charge problem. http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sams...in-the-battery-average-repairability_id24205/

i said i was retarded. Those ones aren't the original ones i read back when i had the issue. Saw them and thought they might be relevant. All i know is I didn't have the battery issues I did until I couldn't find my charger and used an lg one and included my extender. Still refuses to charge of I add the extra cord. My phone would get so hot i could feel it thru my otterbox and it would say not charging. Wasn't discharging, but wasn't charging either. Discovered i had to power cycle before i plugged it in and then not wake the screen for it to charge and not get hot. Charged it fully one day with power off, did the battery calibration thing, and went back to my original cord. Had to use a different one the other day and same thing started. Repeated above fix and am golden again.

If that's the problem shouldn't you be able to turn off nfc while its charging then back on again when its done charging. The voltage and amperage shouldn't be diffident enough when using two stock phone chargers that have the same connection type. I'm not an expert I'm just taking an educated guess.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

actually, i do believe i just saw something on that. At the time tho, I just wanted to get it to charge and googled nfc battery along with some stuff off the battery. These are what Google returned.
And i don't use any other charger but let anyone use mine.
The cord yeah but not the pluggie part

The battery only holds the NFC antenna, the actual NFC chip is inside the phone. Using different chargers won't affect anything. The OEM charger will change it's amperage overtime as the battery is closer to being fully charged. It'll also only take as much power as it needs, so the difference in amperage/voltage is irrelevant.

I had an issue. I googled it. Issue resolved. Noticed large amounts of other people having same issues. Posted my findings thinking it could be useful.

As was stated by the other posters, the NFC chip is in the GNex, the NFC antenna is in the battery. NFC will NOT work without the antenna.
phonearena.com is not a reliable source of accurate information.

Stalking? LOL! Ah, no. As you can see, I spend a lot of time on these forums.
I'm just trying to add some weight behind what is accurate and what is not. (And I think I've built up at least a little credibility on XDA...)

So my ET4G wont charge the batt. but will connect to everything else just fine

So not 100% sure as to why this happed, but I did bring it to the sprint store they told me there was some corrosion found in the charging port. Which in means there unwilling to even look at my ET4G luck has it I did get the ins. coverage...But I'm not ready to just roll over and give up that easily. What i find strange is that I have absolutely no problems connecting!? I can flash with Odin/mount usb/SD card and usb tethering.???? When I plug my phone in it will start charging then in less then a min it stops...if I check the battery info page it will change from discharging to charging for just a short time when connected to power (usb or charger) then goes to not charging...After downloading and testing (one at a time) a few battery apps found in the market I noticed that my battery temp is reading at 6C and when I'm really using it and its pretty hot to touch the highest reading I've gotten is 13C now I don't know what translates into as far as F but I know that its way to low to be correct...So I figured I'd get the possibility for it being a software issue outta the way by flashing back to stock and trying a few combos of Roms and kernels making sure to wipe and keep the Roms absolutely as they came unless I needed to add gapps...I quickly got an error upon plugging in stating "charging stopped battery temp to low." and every touchwiz based ROM I use gives me the same error...So I've come to the conclusion that I somehow got my phone damp/wet and fried the temp sensor...So unless I can replace that for cheaper then 100$ fixing the hardware is useless but
I was mostly interested in what apk/receiver is responsible for telling my OS to not accept the charge b/c its to cold and if I can just disable it in autostart manager or if theres another work around to force my battery to take the charge (I know there is a probably gonna be a risk of over charging/over heating etc etc etc but either way I'm gonna end up dishing out the 100.00 due to the pure inconvenience)
**I should also note I have tried 2 OEM chargers 1 after market car charger 2 OEM batteries and 6 different (two different brands) of after market batteries all of them work for other ET4g's and all of the batteries will take a good clean 100% charge from a wall charger or in my wifes ET4G....
Of course if theres no fix which I'd find hard to believe said phone might just end up at the bottom of a a lake...if sprint will still honor there replacement police in that case????
I'd like to use the "lake" phone as mod fodder for our current Emmc issue once we get a "possible fix"not just a random shot in the dark, but if we get what is believe to be a fix I'll be happy to follow a Dev's step by step instructions, and log my findings to help out! With that being said thank you for taking the time to read my monster of a post, and any advise into this issue is much appreciated
I would also like to know if there is anyway to fix this problem...
My wife, being 36 weeks pregnant is kinda forgetful suddenly.
She lost her phone for about a week we searched everywhere, cleaned the house many times, cleaned out the car, search for a week.
the amazing thing is she lost it walking from the bed room to the car, she was in the car when she realized it was missing maybe 2-3 minutes after leaving... long story short...
I went walking and found it on the side of the road... a week later with the case and battery cover off laying face down on the grass. I got it home took it apart, dried it out, and amazingly it still works the only thing wrong with it is the Battery saying its at 6°F and wont charge, Its stock ive tried factory reset didn't work. I have the same phone i can charge the battery in my phone but cant charge either battery's in her phone.
Would there be a way to fake the sensor?
Force it to say a higher number?

That's what I had to do... clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol and something that can get into the port and remove any debris - a cotton swab, towel, anything... then try again until it works.
Here's the pinout schematic:
http://pinoutsguide.com/PortableDevices/micro_usb_pinout.shtml
So it's possible to have one and not the other if contact is not being made.
I had to go as far add cleaning all the way up the main board and all every contact point from port to battery
If the phone works just fine go on eBay and grab an external charger and spare battery. I got one for $8 with generic battery. Works great.

Here's the thing. This not working is a sign of other issues. If you see corrosion like this and you don't address it it will lead to bad things. Better to remove any corrosion while it's minor IMHO.

[Q] Guys charging help needed and would be greatly appreciated here

Ok about a two year old galaxy s2 (SCH-R760) to be exact and is now having charging problems as of now to this date... im not sure what is going on at this point but two different charges that have been tested and working are now refusing to charge the android (it registers it as it is charging but the battery is draining and charging when the phone is off results in hours of supposedly charging and the battery not increasing by even 1%) i have an external wall charger that charges the battery out of the android on the wall (that charges it just fine and it is a brand new battery not even one month old yet) ive tested this while being rooted and custom rom as well as just flashing back to stock software unrooted and still have the exact same effects.. (ive opened the case to see if the port is loose but it practically looks brand new inside and doesnt appear to move or budge at all).. im running out of options here at the moment and would greatly appreciate any thoughts on anything of this matter

Could be a bad battery as stated, or the battery is loose in the phone and not making good contact or the usb post may be dirty or damaged. Try cleaning the usb slot with a qtip and alcohol. Make sure all the prongs are straight.
Have a great day!
I had the problem that one of my connection posts was bent in too much, if you do mess with them BE CAREFUL. They are very fragile.

If you believe its not the port...maybe take a volt meter ( powered ) and test the circuit in the battery compartment. I've never tried this , but it should read out just like any other circuit .. Easy way to be sure that the battery connections inside are good.. I'm not sure which plates are which..but I think my battery says..so maybe yours does to..
I believe you should get a reading between + and - ...and if they are the outside plates ( respectively ) . Then you should get a reading from each of those to the middle one..
This is just me applying my knowledge of house electric...the way a phone is wired is beyond me..so I could be miles from right...

Hmm I haven't tried or even thought about anything like that actually... It's a new battery wouldn't think it would go that quickly but as a matter of fact I'm going to see if I can get the battery checked and see if anything is up with it that gives me ideas but the battery I can say will charge perfectly when it is outside of the phone and connected to an external wall charger and nothing is wrong then but completely refuses to charge while in the phone

Okay so I came across this stuff while surfing through and it caught my attention. Supposedly a breakthrough product set to increase the battery life by up to 3 times and also improves recharge time and usage. Now I'm very very skeptical about this and honestly think its a load of crap but who am i to judge. I'm interested to know if any of you have tried it before. Check out the link to their website.

According to that picture, it's not even a sticker on the battery, but on the back of the phone...ridiculous.
Edit: I looked at the site and it is indeed on the battery. Not sure why the iPhone picture looks like that.
I also love this bit "Several charging cycles (5-10) are required for noticeable improvement in battery life"

It's because the iPhone doesn't have a removable battery so you have to put the sticker on the back of the phone instead. That's how amazingly powerful these things are, they work through a metal phone body. This is serious technology guys.

Hello,
I have 4 stickers and I am testing them on the EEE 701 pc battery that has 4 lithium cells. so one stickers for each cell.
they were near to be death, 10 minutes charge. Now the pc does stay on for 1 hour after 5 cycles.
and they're not even covering 80% as they suggest to do.
nanotechnology is something you should never undervalue, and it is the only reason I looked at it and got to test.
I have other 'ancient' lithium battery to test and will do it.

Yeah and just because it's supposed "nanotechnology" doesn't mean it does a damn thing. Use your noggin, it's a sticker. Calling it nanotechnology is just an easy marketing trick, just like calling things HD. Ignorant consumers bite, hook, line, and sinker. If this miracle tech was baked INTO the battery, that's one thing, but again, it's just a sticker. Don't you think if it was real that battery manufacturers would have jumped all over it? It's a scam.

Lenovo Vibe Shot Z90-7 Charging Problem

Hello,
I would like some insight on a problem that I am having with a Lenovo Vibe Shot Z90.
I just bought the phone two months ago during a trip I took to Singapore. It worked fine for about a month before the problem started. The phone never fell down, into water, overheated or anything like that. The problem started suddenly, without an apparent reason. Alas, the local Lenovo branch refused to honor the warranty, claiming that they only take in "EU models".
The problem is that the phone will not charge while it is turned on. It does not even "see" the USB cable getting plugged in. If I turn it off however, it charges just fine, all the way up to 100%. I also noticed that the battery drains faster, for no apparent reason, without any apps running. It most definitely is not a software problem, I did a hard reset at first, it did not work and then, just to be sure, I even flashed the latest official ROM using QFIL.
Do you reckon there is any possibility that the problem is caused by the battery, or is it definitely mainboard-related? If there is any chance that replacing the battery will solve the problem, I could order one online and I am competent enough to replace it myself, but I do not want to get into an ordeal if there is not even a remote chance that it would fix the problem.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thank you in advance.

Yes. A bad charger was the first thing that I considered, so I tried another 2 A charger and then even tried it with a 50 A desktop PSU. It made no difference. There is no current flowing from the charger (PSU) to the phone at all once it is on. When I turn it off, it draws about 1.25 A, which is pretty normal.

Yes. A bad charger was the first thing that I considered, so I tried another 2 A charger and then even tried it with a 50 A desktop PSU. It made no difference. You have to read about "USB PowerDelivery".
Alone PSU current efficiency has no effect on USB devices charging current.
Amount of current that the end device is able to absorb, is defined on the resistors (voltage dividers) which feeds the D+ and D- lines.

I am aware that the device would not ever (normally) draw more current than it is supposed to, regardless of the PSU used.
I did check some of the resistors at the time before my original post and they did seem to fall within spec. Besides, the phone would charge normally once powered down, so I doubt that it was such a simple problem as a resistor. Alas, this is an old thread and long ago I decided that the phone was not worth my time anymore, so I threw it away and thus I cannot recheck the circuit again. This will hopefully be helpful to people with similar problems in the future.
I think this is a software issue. Please tell me what version of ROM and baseband you have?
I was playing a lot with different roms, and in some cases I had the same issue. Eg when phone was chargeed from PC it was very slow.
Hi,
i've just received my lenovo vibe shot.
After a full charge, it worked perfectly.
After a second charge, still working. And the it stopped. No led when i plug it. No charge, no power.
I tried a different usb cable. Then another charger. Still nothing.
Any idea ?
Thank you.

As far I know, MAX77819 is charging the battery.
Using multimeter measure selected (PINK) test point and read if voltage vs GND is about 1.8V

Thank you for your answer.
I'm not sure I will open the phone now as it is under warranty.
I'm also not sure that i would be able to open the phone as I don't see how to open it !
It 's kind of weird that nobody else seems to have this kind of charging problem. Bad luck I guess.
Same problem
I have exactly the same problem. Phone was purchased from tinydeal. Replaced ROM with international version because not been able to run Facebook and other applications. Working perfect for 1 month. Then suddenly stoped charging. When plugged indicator shows charging but percentage charged droped.
I was not able to use warranty because I cannot send products with lithium batteries internationally using regular mail.
The phone was at two service shops. They problem is this chip which should be responsible for charging is very difficult to replace. They could not repair it. Now I have ordered a motherboard from aliexpress for 70$. When the phone broke there were no options for purchasing motherboard.
Thank you for your post.
I have now sent the phone back (i did send it with regular mail !). Still wainting for replacement.
I hope i won't have the same problem again !
Let us know if you succeded to fix the problem.
Hi.
I had the same problem after my first boot. I bought in Aliexpress. My solution was (more or less) easy.
I don't know why, powerful charger didn't work, but my old 5v-500mA worked 30 mins after connected. Once I had 10% battery I used stock charger and thats all.... very strange... Probably something wrong in battery..... who knows.... I hope this helps next time.

Samsung Note 10.1 2014 Edition (P-601) wont accept new batterys

Hey there,
greetings from germany. Pretty sure this belongs to "Questions and Answers", if not - please hit me and move it.
I am confronted with a, in my opinion, strange problem regarding my P-601 Samsung Note 10.10 2014 Edition.
I will try to provide every action I took and what I figured out so far that noone that wants to help will need his crystal ball. But the first actions are about a year ago, so forgive me if I cant remember exactly.
Device: Samsung Tablet Note 10.1 2014 Edition (P-601)
Problem: Charging slow AF but lives, can be turned on, can be loaded via USB. (But more power is drained while using than can be delivered by charging = dies sooner or later while beeing used)
OS: LineAge OS
First I thought, EASY - get a new battery, done. Wrong.
I ordered a new battery, a (2) "vhbw" battery for "T8220E" - same mentioned on the original Samsung battery.
This is a year ago, In my belief I did get the tablet to run, and charge- but had the same problems regarding the charging speed. Slow AF - but I am not sure! Life happend, things came inbetween so I did put everything aside. Now I want to use it in my home gym, so thats why I came up here.
My next suggestion was that the charge electronic maybe the problem, so I ordered a new one, built it in. Didnt change anything. The (1) Original battery, is still charging slow af.
The new battery, doesnt do anything! If the (2) "vhbw" battery is built in, I am not able to turn the tablet on OR charge it. Its just a brick with this battery.
So what did I do? I ordered a new battery, from a well known german company trading parts like this, a (3) "original samsung battery". Guess what, the tablet does nothing.
So i thought, maybe your new charging electronic is the problem. So I put the (1) Original Tablet battery in again, and well - it runs, can be turned on and can be charged (slow af).
So the charging electronic is fine. Display is also fine.
I did confirm this several times by changing the batterys in and out, the new batterys (2) and (3) are "dead", the (1) original battery runs.
Right now I am stuck. It seems that my Tablet is blocking any battery besides his original one.
Note: I cant access Recovery Mode with battery (2) and (3). Its really dead. They where also charged atleast an half an hour, just in case they were delivered "really dead at 0%", which would be new to me because most devices or batterys come with atleast 25% battery status.
Note2: Yes I did use a ****load of power adapter and cables all in combination, same result.
Any help is really appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hello, I came here looking for recommendations for a new battery for my SM-P600. Could you tell me where you ordered your OEM one from?
As far as your problem, do you have a multi-meter? There are very cheap basic ones if you don't. Anyway, you can test the seemingly dead batteries with it to determine if they are in fact dead, or something else is going on.
Secondly, do you happen to have a hobby charger? With these, you can charge pretty much any battery L-ion or other. You can also do a drain test with most of these to determine the capacity of a battery. That is all I can really think of thus far. Determine if the batteries are dead. Oh one more thing you could do with the multi-meter is test the current being applied to the battery. I believe there are some free apps in the Google Play Store that can also tell you the electrical current going into the battery. Perhaps by doing this you can determine if the problem is something in the tablet itself. If I think of anything else, I will let you know.
Thanks
Hey,
thanks for the feedback.
You mean battery (3)? I ordered battery (3) from ng-mobile.de
Funny that you say that with the "dead battery", because I just had the same thought 10 Minutes ago. Those batterys were manufactured years ago I guess and were just sitting cozy in their boxes, I guess they are deep discharged. (hope this vocab is correct).
I have pretty much everything that is measured "useless" in a normal household, but sadly no multi-meter (no more). If those batterys are deeply discharged, it should be possible to be reanimated with very low charging power. The lowest I should have is a USB 2.0 Port on my pc (which were it is connected right now) or a oldschool dumb power bank without any intelligence).
I will keep this updated.
solved
It worked. About an hour connected to a USB 2.0 port of my computer, and it just popped back into live. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!
There have been reports of the plugs of replacement batteries for these tablets not fitting properly.
Also bad solder joints at the battery connector.
And a certain behaviour i oberved myself, requiring certain custom roms or chargers in case of my P605:
In soft-off state tablet will charge at 0,5A instead of 2A max
and
When powered on it will charge at full power until the screen switches off and it enters standby. Then no charge at all.
