News: Important News for Sprint's LF9 OTA Update
6/30/2012:
Sprint SGS3 received the LF9 OTA update from Sprint today. If you used our previous root method, applying this OTA update works. After applying the update, you need to flash the latest version of our Root .zip in order to retain custom recovery and root status. You may also want to upgrade to CWM for SGS3 LTE variants version 4 as it contains an important fix for backups.
Reportedly LF9 fixes the Google Wallet not Certified issue.
sweet v4 did the trick. the OTA broke recovery and I was getting nervous lol
Did not fix the Google wallet issue for me

No, although you need Root .zip v4 after you upgrade to yesterday's OTA.
Funny thing is I did not have a problem with wallet before I tried to update ...the update failed in cwm obviously

Looks too easy but can't wait to root
ODIN'd back to stock, found my security update inside the internal cache (stock recovery) and was able to run it from there just fine....yup, had unrooted and run the update; it downloaded but failed to activate.
ODIN'd cwm/rooted then opened wallet, activation went fine........after, ran the Store update: now I get the Unsupported Device message (4 rooted devices)............go figure!
** still, wallet works just fine! Rooted users, just ignore the message........all wallet users should be aware: your working wallet needs to be reset direct from the open app (not cache/not data) PRIOR to flash or device hard reset. Otherwise you may end up borking your wallet and bricking the secure element. So, prior to flash: open wallet then navigate Menu/Settings/Reset google wallet.........now you're free to flash.

help for us mac users
Could you guys find out/include the method to achieve root using Mac OS X? It would be greatly appreciated.
Help please
For some reason I am unable to achieve root. I flashed the LF9 update and then Odin'd v4 tar, pulled the battery when it said pass, booted to recovery and flashed root-from-recovery v4. When I rebooted, I did not have root. What did I do wrong please?
Hey guys I just got my Sprint SGS3 a few minutes ago and I'm getting the update notification, can I update it and still root?

update: nevermind I actually do have root access. however when I used the root check to see if I had root, it said that I did not and it said that the system was running very slowly. however when I did it again after updating the binary in su I found that I did have root. thanks to all the devs, donation on the way.

Does the flash actually fail with Odin? Or are you accidentally letting the phone reboot before booting into recovery. The Step-by-Step directions are there for this very reason. If the phone boots up without flashing our Root .zip v4, the stock kernel will rewrite the stock recovery back to the phone and you will have to start over.
Question? Do we need to install busybox and let it update?

If you want to stay rooted, flash the LG1 package from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426. That post also has the GoogleQuickSearchBox app from LEM if you want to put back universal search.
Yup, I had the "update available" notification, then updated to UCALG1 and still have root and so far I haven't been bothered by another update notification.
let me try and clear things up sorry for the confusin, i am rooted and want to stay rooted. at&t sent that ota update about a month ago i guess now and it ask me to update when i try and update it starts to the restarts phone and sends me to recovery and i reboot system and it says update failed. id like to update it if i can keep root but not sure how to do that. my recovery is cwm-based recovery v5.5.04. i know there is a work around i think it has to do with the odin but i have no idea how to do that one. phone specs are baseband version i747uclem. kernel is 3.0.8-599060-user build number is imm75d.i747ucalem im not sure ill miss the universal search as i dont believe i use it if it just takes away the widget.
Here's my experience:
Got AT&T SGS3 from local retailer. It had I747UCALEM ROM.
Restored stock kernel via method in [Root]/[Restore]Our ATT SGS3 Tested working! thread using ODIN.
Installed ClockworkMod
Flashed rooted I747UCALEM ROM from [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - Updated [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers] thread using ODIN
Verified root via SuperUser and Titanium Backup
Installed ClockworkMod Touch for AT&T from [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - Updated [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers] thread in the Third, (optional) section.
A few days later, I got an AT&T Software Update notification.
I tried to apply the update, and it rebooted and told me the update could not be applied, so I told it to Postpone.
About a week later or so it nagged me again, so I revisted the [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - Updated [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers] thread and noticed the I747UCALG1 rooted ROM was available.
I downloaded the I747UCALG1 rooted ROM and applied via ODIN
After application, checked root again, and still rooted
All good (as far as I can tell), and no more AT&T Software Update nags! Now I know to freeze the app via Titanium Backup if I have the problem again, or probably I should just freeze it regardless so it stops checking period.
So in your case since you're already rooted on I747UCALEM like I was, I think all you need to do is apply the I747UCALG1 rooted ROM via ODIN and you'll be good like me.
Hope that helps clear things up for you.
So not sure if i know to do it but i think u download file to computer and open in Odin put phone in download run Odin go to recovery unzip file. Correct me if I'm wrong
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Pretty much you got it. Just remember to extract the tar and use PDA mode in ODIN.
The instructions in the Second, section of the [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - Updated [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers] thread, that's what I followed. It tells you exactly what you need to do.
What is tar?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Sorry, extract the tar file out of the .7z file, you don't need to do anything with the tar file beyond feeding it to ODIN. Just don't try to feed the .7z file to ODIN as it won't know what to do with it.
But if you're insanely curious, tar is a tape archive file from the *nix days, it's a concatenation of files and their attributes.
More on tar on Wikipedia
i noticed on the other thread it says u can stop at a certain point if u arent gonna flash roms. im not sure im going to on this phone yet or not can i go back and do the third step if i decide i wanna do roms or would i be better off going ahead and going all the way thorugh? or do i even have to since i already have clockworkmod?
As I understand things, because you're rooted already (or maybe because we have clockworkmod), the standard AT&T update doesn't work. Regardless, if out did work we'd lose root in the update.
The AT&T update check still runs in the standard (rooted) ROM so you are getting nagged about the newer version.
So...
OPTION A - UPDATE AND KEEP ROOT
If you want to update and keep root, you need to manually apply the newest rooted stock ROM from the thread with ODIN.
Once you do that the AT&T updater should see your ROM is current and will stop nagging.
OPTION B - DON'T UPDATE AND KEEP ROOT
Freeze the AT&T software update application from Titanium Backup.
Then you won't be nagged about the software update anymore.
You won't have the newest ROM but at least you keep root.
OPTION C - LOSE ROOT AND UPDATE LIKE STOCK PEOPLE DO
I haven't looked into unrooting so I can't tell you how to do this one, but you'd be back to "normal people" world.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2

For this you'd flash a non-rooted, stock ROM through ODIN.
Can I still receive OTA updates while rooted and custom recovery? I ask because I am not getting the notification people are talking about. I tried unrooting and it still says I'm up to date. I have TWRP recovery. U would like to receive OTAs at least until Jellybean comes out, then I'll go custom. I'm coming from a Samsung Vibrant that I was really used to updating and it seems like some things have changed since then.

Do you have custom rom? On custom roms there is no notification about OTA updates.
I just made a guide that might help you for stock rooted roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842142
It will take you the Kies route to get your update. I also did not receive a notification.
I do not have a custom Rom. I am using the stock, root injected Rom and TWRP. I have the original recovery of I need it and OTA root keeper. I thawed out all of my frozen bloatware apps, so I should be fairly straight, besides root and recovery.
Also curious if I flash Wildchild's deodexed stock OTA update, would I still be able to get notifications or does that classify as "custom"since it's deodexed?

I assume your guide method will trip the flash counter and I use Triangle away to resolve that? I used the no trip method to get root the first time, that's why I ask about Wildchild's deodexed version because I have flashable one downloaded already if all is well with future OTAs.

Yes, on my guide you will trip the flash counter when you install the custom recovery again in ODIN. But like you said, triangle away and your good.
Where are you located? OTAs are generally sent out in waves, by region i think. Just may not be pushed to your area yet.
And if you are rooted, you can download the updated but it will fail at install.

I'm on the west coast of the U.S. I'm sure I'm not in the wave yet, but I'm impatient (as it seems like most of us in these forums are) and I'm going to flash the deodexed version... now. Thanks for your quick replies and I'm keeping cybrnook's guide for later reference just in case.
Okay, so I flash that root injected OTA update and new modem with no flash counter trip, but now my device status is modified. Can I get future OTA notifications?
I am rooted with cwm and wicked rom v2. I got the notification and was able to download it however when it rebooted and went into cwm recovery and it says aborted and failed.
So I think if you have a custom recovery you will not be able to do ota updates but might be possible for Kies update never tried Kies so not sure

As long as you are on a stock based rom and the ota componets are intact, you should get notified if there is an update.
The update will fail though so you have to either get it as a custom rom or update via kies or odin.
Most people say it fails because of root, but I think it can also fail due to either a custom recovery and/or having a deodexed rom. (Not 100% about that last one though)

If when the official update is released and you want the official ota you can Odin back to stock and grab it but I suggest you wait it out till devs get a rom you can flash without the worries of losing root. Being able to be rooted after jb ota is still to be determined cuz well no one has it yet.

It'll be easy. The beauty of an Odin flash able recovery means no matter what we will have a custom recovery. I rooted the leak jb build by flashing cwm in Odin. I unchecked reboot so I could pull the battery and key combo into recovery. If you let it boot after Odin recovery you have to Odin recovery again cus it'll be overwritten. When you get into recovery just flash superuser and binary and you'll have root.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Download the official Superuser binary+app at: "h tt p:/ /a n droid su.c om/ sup eru ser/" (no spaces), and flash it in your recovery.
If your recovery is not working (due to the update) or whatever, then just reflash it using odin or heimdall. flash either CMW or TWRP:
"ht tp ://ww w.cl ockw orkmo d.co m/ro mma nager/"
"ht tp: //t eamw .i n /pro ject/t wrp2 /106"
^ NO SPACES (XDA not allowing me to post links before 10 posts)
I think the odin links are pretty famous by now, so I won't bother to post them.

I have a rooted Sprint 2 with stock recovery, and wanted to unroot and take the OTA update. I tried to unroot using Toolkit 3.0.0, which flashed TWRP as part of the unroot process. After I thought I was unrooted, I took the OTA update, but then realized I had forgotten to flash back to stock recovery, and I got an error. I've flashed back to stock recovery, but now my phone is still on Build JRO03C.L900VPALJC, and I can't get option to take the OTA update again. I've tried 'Update Samsung Software' and 'Update Firmware' but they both say no update available.
Any suggestions?

Does the MA7 update include any modems that were included in the update? Do you think I've tripped the flash counter and that's why I can't see OTA anymore? Will flashing the MA7 update trip the flash counter? If I've already tripped it, is there a way to untrip it?

Everything is included in the zip. But you'll need to make sure your binary count is down to one and also like you said, in stock recovery.
