Screen brightness - software issue - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just wanted to say, back when I had a Galaxy Nexus the screen always seemed to be too dim. I recall having to disable "auto" and manually adjusting the brightness. I kept blaming the phone but apparently it's not the phone.
I had switched from a Nexus to a Rezound some time ago(yeah yeah) and they finally released an official ICS update for it recently. Anyway, before ICS, the auto brightness worked just fine. Now that the Rezound is on ICS, it's having the exact same brightness issue that the Nexus had been having.
Hopefully Google is aware of this issue and will fix it for all ICS phones.

This isn't an issue per say, Auto Brightness is meant to conserve battery and an easy way to do that is to keep brightness as low as possible. If you don't like it, root and ROM to CM and change the values yourself.

Strange dimming bug...

I've been having a a bit of a strange bug with my GN...
When i unlock and open for instance messaging app to look at SMS's...i see the screen dim a lot and come back again. If i open up settings screen dims like an LCD panel with no backlight. If i click back, screen comes back again or if i lock and unlock screen, all is OK.
I've done some fiddling about and it only seems to happen on apps with white backgrounds i.e. messaging, gtalk, gmail etc. If i open dark background apps i.e. phone app, settings or gallery it doesnt happen.
But for all those other apps when i launch them, screen appears to flicker (dim) and come back again...messaging is the only one where it dims completely in settings.
Has anybody else noticed this?
And more wierdness...in the messaging settings menu, if i scroll to the bottom the brightness goes completely and then comes back again, and starts flickering a lot...
maybe i'll try turning off auto brightness and see if it still does it...
I've had a couple of customers come in already saying they always felt like the brightness was on notch to low sometimes or just very dim. Considered it user error, just got my nexus in the mail and after set up brightness just dropped randomly to almost nothing...
soooo guess we'll see
ah well still did it with auto brightness off
wonder if i've got a borked phone or if others do it and they just dont notice...
EDIT: if anybody's interested in seeing it i've just uploaded a vid here
And i know i still have the front screen cover on...havent wanted to take it off yet!
Restored stone to factory settings this morning and i've not installed anything else or changed any settings (other than turning off NFC, wifi and mobile data)...and it still does it.
Think i might have a defective handset then...annoying though, it's only 2 weeks old but the place i got it from states
Phones that are faulty out-of-box as determined by our warehouse can also be returned for an extended period of up to 7 days from date of delivery.

So if i can't get a replacement out of them, what are the odds of samsung replacing it for a new handset?
Hmm pretty sure it's hardware, set desktop picture to something quite bright/white and sure enough when i was scrolling through the 5 homescreens brightness was flickering from one to the next...
What are the odds of getting a replacement handset after 2 weeks? :|
I had this same issue when I got my phone. I had a yakjuwx build in my phone.
Ever since I flashed over to yakju I haven't experienced it.
You may want to check and see what you have.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Mine is already running yakju from new :/ I might try re-flashing it tonight though just for the hell of it.
Is this not a bit weird that it happens only on bright/wight screens/backgrounds/apps? And that it's suddenly fine when you lock the screen...
If it was a laptop i'd be fitting a new panel to it but then i dont know what amoled's are like (especially combined with a light sensor)
Nope, still does it after a re-flash :/
Got a replacement handset now...
Like my first one, it was one of the early opened and re-sealed with samsung label handsets (and they hadnt put the battery door on properly, fingerprint on the SIM card slot!)
But anyways, waiting for the OTA update on this one
It's obviously running ITL41D and no OTA has come through yet whereas on my first handset it came through pretty much straight away.
Would the fact i've already had the OTA on one handset stop this coming through? :|

[Q] cm9 buttons dont illuminate

I installed cm9 after using cm7 and cant get the four buttons on the phone to light up. They are accessible but not illuminated. has anyone else encountered this problem.
Also I was wondering if the Cm7 uses more battery than cm9
You have to use auto brightness.
cm9 illumination
If you mean display auto brightness ok but when I'm outside I can't see the screen...guess ibhave to toggle back and forth. I had switched back to cm7. In your opinion is 9 worth changing to. It seems like in 7 everything is working pretty well.
Thank you for the reply

Toggling auto brightness on and off solves it. Just tinker with it..

Ive been using the dinc2 since last July and I got used to the buttons to the point that I noticed they didn't light up, but until I saw this post, I never considered it a "problem". Since I knew where they were and didn't need to see them to use them. If they ever do "fix" this issue I hope they allow for a settings option to keep them turned off. I actually enjoy them off, in my mind its just one more security feature. I know when my wife tries to use my phone she needs to see them, and since recently rooting to CM9 I don't want her bricking my phone. Because of the unlit buttons she has stopped using my phone (she uses some cheap AT&T phone, refuses to switch to Verizon). Just throwing my opinion in the mix. Thanks for the post as well I wasn't sure it was intentional or not.

I believe in the advanced brightness settings under CMSettings you can do just that. Whenever I run a CM rom, I always go to the brightness settings under edit Other Levels and set all the softkey values on the far right column to 255 so they're always the same brightness and look nice. I like the sheen they have, but I can only see it when they're close to full brightness.
If you did the opposite, set all the values to 0 and then click Save and Apply Values at the top of that screen, they should, theoretically, never turn on.
Thank you ....as I am new to a rooted phone and this forum I didn't know those adjustments were available...learn something new everyday ......
Does cm9 drain the battery alot quicker or is it unnoticeable

Unfortunately, I can't answer that question for you, as my phone doesn't like our ICS builds. Until we get a leaked official kernel and some source, I'm SOL.

Where exactly are these settings? Running CM7 with the same problem as the OP and can't find it anywhere. Edit: found the settings and putting them all at 255 didn't do anything. Any other ideas?

[UPDATED] Auto brightness flicker - Related to CPU load? Try different governer?

Hi all.
I'm reading a lot about 'screen flicker'. But it seems people are using this to describe a few different faults.
I've noticed that my one x backlight flickers when in auto brightness mode. But it only does it under artificial light. Under natural light it's totally fine.
If I turn off Auto brightness, it is completely fine also, regardless of what level I set the brightness to.
It's almost as if the software isn't filtering the auto brightness sensor output enough and trying to respond instantaneously to even the slightest light change, giving the impression of a flicker.
Who else has this issue specifically?
It looks to me like a software issue, but I only have 3 days left in my return for refund peiod and I'm not sure what the best option is.
Cheers.
EDIT: On to my 10th handset now with the same issue and just about ready to give up, but have noticed that the flicker seems to be worse when the CPU is coming on and off heavy load.
Can someone with Root and SETCPU installed please try different governers to see if they make any difference to this issue? I don't wan to root this phone to try it myself as I may end up returning it. Thanks!

Oh well return it, and buy a new one thats probably the best option, i ordered mine yesterday, and ill do the same in 2 weeks if it have issues
Yeah I'm thinking that might be the best option. It's just that it seems to be a Software issue to me.
Anyone upgraded to 1.28 and seen this specific problem (not the screen jumping and flickering pixels) go away?

I've upgraded to 1.28 and still have the flickering problem. I would love to be able to believe its software and its going to get fixed with an OTA, but at the moment everyone is simply uncertain as to what the future holds.
HTC advices anyone with a flickering screen to go to your carrier and ask for a replacement

On to my 10th handset with auto-brightness flicker now. At what point should i jsut give up? lol
It seems to be somehow related to CPU load also as I'm noticing the flicker is far worse when the cpu is changing power states.
Can someone with root try a different governer for the CPU and see if that changes the flicker at all?
BUMP. I'd be really great if someone rooted could test this theory!
..
I really cant help but ill tell my experience with my onex for the past two or three weeks.
I had the flickering screen twice,
1. random on the notification bar.
2. I was taking photos and got the CPU loaded because I was shooting too many pics. the bottom side of the screen was flickering.
anyway, I notice that the flickering only happend when the auto screen rotate is enabled.
Thanks for the reply, but I think you're talking about a different flicker. I'm talking about the back-light flicker when Auto Brightness is enabled. Not the LCD panel flicker.

auto brightness

Hey guys well i purchased a gnex back on launch day and it worked almost flawlessly, except sometimes anyways i work outisde and the auto brightness worked pefectly and my charging port went bad so verizon sent me a new one. and well this new ones auto brightness works terribly if at all when outside. Is there anything i can do to help or fix this, i know it doesnt work this poorly because like i said my original worked perfectly and even my fascinate worked perfectly. So any help or tips would be appreciated.
if you're still running 4.0.2 of the stock firmware, auto-brightness is improved with the 4.0.4 update
yes im stock and dont ever plan on rooting/romin my gnex did a bunch of that with my fascinate but dont feel the need to with gnex ics is so nice the way it is. But can anyone else confirm the auto brightness better in 4.0.4. But really thats kinda irrelevant because like i said it worked perfectly on my original gnex and this 1 is POS.
If it's faulty then I would get another replacement.

I suggest u get the lux auto brightness app from the android market....I have been using it since I got my nexus and it works flawlessly ...you can also customize the auto brightness level and sensitivity to your liking
This is one advantage of rooting. Rooting isn't about flashing roms. Its about having admin rights to the OS so you could tweak the auto brightness values to your exact desired levels.
You shouldn't have to root in order to upgrade to 4.0.4 ... Verizon started pushing this version to phones in the beginning of May. Check for new updates in your settings.

Auto brightness bug

When I'm in a very bright environment (eg outdoors, sunny day), I can't manually adjust the brightness if auto brightness is on. But I can do it if the brightness slider is not on "red' (if it's not too bright outside). On manual everything works ok, if it's not too bright outside everything works ok.
It wasn't like this on my S7. It bothers me when using Waze: I would like to manually override the auto brightness and adjust it by just moving the slider, not having to turn auto brightness off.
Anyone else having this problem?

I am having problems with my SM-G965F. My brightness auto adjusts with auto brightness turned off! There is definitely something screwy going on with the auto brightness. After a while, it gets so I can't adjust it at all. That is, I can move the slider full left and right and nothing changes. It doesn't matter is auto brightness is turned on or not. No change.
I have done a factory reset once to clear it but the problem came back. They have this usage memory feature and that may be part of the problem. I found this post on re-calibration of the brightness sensor to be helpful:

(as a new member of this forum, I am not allowed to post links. replace "_" with "." )
I did this and I got the display brightness back into a reasonable range. However, I can no longer turn auto brightness off at all. very weird.

UPDATE: Today Samsung released an update to the Samsung Experience Service that seems to have completely solved my auto-brightness issues. Prior to that, I was using Lux Lite and that was working well. If problems come back, I will use that again.

I got it via the notification screen. Here is a thread discussing it.

(I can't post links yet)
Not sure if they are doing a slow rollout or if it is region based. There are some posters who say that when they search the galaxy store, nothing comes up. When I search it, nothing comes up. I have an international version (unlocked). This device was apparently destined to go to Thailand. But one thing is for sure, Samsung fixed the brightness bug but maybe your carrier is holding it up?

Well, it was working fine until I rebooted. Now the auto-brightness doesn't work again just like before. So, unfortunately, back to Lux Lite. I have to say, that the auto-brightness issue and the battery life of this phone suck.
