So about 4-5 months ago, I became frustrated with the GPS woes on my otherwise perfectly operational Evo 4g and went ahead and bought a "refurbished" Epic 4g instead. I miss my Evo 4G like crazy and with work slow for the next couple weeks, I decided to revisit the issue to see if i can maybe fix the problem and re-activate my Evo 4G.
I am a relative n00b but know enough to have exhausted every possible solution I could find using the "search" function. GPS Status AGPS resets, ##GPSCLRX# fixes, as well as pretty much every single driver fix listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132412
thinking back to when the issue began, I think what I did was install a CM7 AOSP ROM over my then stock-rooted ROM, when the GPS didn't work, I kinda freaked out and nandroid flashed back to what i had before but the GPS issues persisted.
I thought about unrooting completely back to stock but if the GPS is the only thing not working, I'm wondering if that would even fix the problem.
It could be a kernel issue perhaps? I'd be more than happy to provide any info/screenshots/logs that might be helpful.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be very very much appreciated
*Edit : in the time since I made the post, I decided to follow this thread and install everything anew, ROM, kernel, GPS drivers/fix (AOSP all the way, CM7 + Savagezen + CM7 N39 Driver ). Still nothing with the GPS, the GPS Status app just will not lock on to a satellite.

that would be very sad indeed. Did you try going back to stock completely (unrooted) to see if that would help? that's the one thing i've not tried and I guess i'm just wondering if anyone thought/knows whether that would make any difference in this case.
(in the meanwhile I flashed miui's ice cream rom on the evo 4g using it mostly as music/media device and it's so freaking gorgeous...looks like i'll have to go get an S3 after all)

Okay, recently I had an issue where on my Evo the GPS would not detect any satellites at all. When I use applications that require the gps such as google maps and gps status the gps icons blinks indicating it's in use, but I never get any signal. On gps status no satellites show up. Currently I'm using sense 4.22 rom, I also tried with 4.24 and cyanogenmod and still no luck. I also tried the sense fix with the ##gpsclx# (something like that I think) and still no luck. Any suggestions?
have you tried that yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132412
worked for me and seems to work for a lot of folks..
Okay I'm going to try that right now

Okay tried one of the drivers, still didn't work, I'm going to try wiping everything and re-installing the 4.22 rom
I've run into the same problem myself.
I've been switching between cm7 nightlies and mik's. Initially things worked just fine, but in the last day it won't get a lock. All I get is a flashing gps icon.
Tried the different drivers floating around, gpsclrx, etc. Not sure what to do at this point either.
Yeah, I just completely wiped everything and installed a fresh rom and still nothing...could the radio's have something to do with it?
I did that too.. No go.
I restored a sense rom, did a profile update, reboot.
Surprisingly, that seemed to work. Trying all the other things, I never did the profile update. So who knows... ymmv.. Good luck!
Btw, if you're on an airave, turn that off if you can when doing the profile update.
Okay thanks I'll try that.
If you don't know what it is, you don't have one.
An airave is sprint's version of a femtocell. A mini tower that uses your cable/dsl connection and broadcasts a low power cell signal. Used for areas of no/weak signal.

Okay so I just tried it, and rebooted multiple times but still a no go. What version of sense did you do it on?
I actually restored back to mik's 2.1 rom. Any sense should work though. Of course, as screwed up as this is, it could have very well been coincidence?
Hmmmm....okay, I think I'll try going back to a froyo rom and see if that works

Okay I don't know I'm about fed up with this. I have tried everything and nothing works. The GPS simply won't pick up signal!!!
Okay just another update, still nothing is working still says searching for GPS none of the Gps apps pick up signal, could this be a hardware issue?
Lol, okay I know I am practically talking to myself, but I just remembered something. About 2 weeks ago I went to the Sprint service center to have my back camera lens replaced. However, I haven't used the gps for a few days after that, but later that week, I noticed that it wasn't working when using my jogging app on the phone. So today I read online that someone else was having gps issue also, and it was the fact that a little connection in their gps antenna came loose. It could possibly be that while repairing it, they accidentally knocked out one of the connections to the gps antenna. I think I'll head over there tomorrow.
Good luck!
Evo HW 003
MIUI 1.6.17
Okay so I just got back from the sprint store. I told the guy about my problem. At first he insisted it was working because in Google maps it shown my location but then I informed him it was just satellite signal. Lol so anyway..after about 20 minutes they decided it just didn't work, they're ordering a replacement phone which should be in, in about a week. Lol fun stuff
Glad you're getting it resolved.
As for me, anytime I have the device connected to the airave, the gps fails to acquire any satellite signal. As soon as I kill the airave and the phone connects to a tower, gps returns. This was not the case before, but the airave has been troublesome more times than not.
Practically however, you're obviously going to make use of the gps when not home, so it's somewhat of a moot point.
Lol yeah...well at least hopefully the replacement phone will work well...now..I just have to deal with rootig that
Okay another update my phone came in early, and the GPS on this one works!!!!!! Yay!!! Lol..now i'm just waiting for a root method hahaha
I am having some issues with the GPS on both my EVO and my Wife's. Basically about 90% of the time It wont lock on using GPS, but rather using the cell network. Now when it does lock on using GPS it is almost scary how accurate it is, but usually the GPS wont lock on.
We are both running:
CM7 nightly
Tiamat v4.0.6 SBC
Radio 2.15.00.05.02
WiMAX 27243
PRI/NV 2.15 003
Both phones are on MetroPCS, fully working with 1x data, and have flashed the MetroPCS Evo AOSP MMS & Web Script v4. Also I have done the ##GPSCLRX# Fix using the Sprint lovers rom.
Is it possible that the recent radio update has anything to do with it? Or could the kernel be affecting it?
you need to look into flashing the Visions GPS driver that Galandy fixed up for us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132412&highlight=aosp+gps
the top one, the qualcomm vision gps driver 1.1
should be good
If you read the faq's for cm7, you would know that the gps is flaky with that rom. I ran that rom for 3 months and always had problems. Some phones will have the gps work fine with that rom, but most just dont work at all.
This could be better placed in Q&A or CM7 discussion.
I am not familiar with Metro, however, you can get GPS status from market. I highly recommend it and it clears data plus downloads assistance data to get even better results.
Also, check out these fixes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132412
I recommend qualcom v 1.1
Ok so I am flashing the Qualcomm driver as we speak. oddly enough my GPS works fantastic at home, so I wont be able to post my results until I go to work tomorrow. But I will post back as soon as I am home. Thanks, I had no idea there was a driver update. I have my fingers crossed.
Ok, wow! of course I wanted to test it before I left in the morning. Now before flashing the driver my GPS would place me almost dead center of my apartment complex. Now its actually pinpointing my unit. So I haven't been able to do a big test yet, but that's pretty impressive already. Will post back tomorrow after really trying it out.
Horrible. Unfortunately, there was no difference.
Looks like im on the hunt for a new rom. I've had it with cyanogen anyway ever-since the issue with my screen not coming on when i get a call.
Any suggestions?

I'm kinda at the end of my rope trying to find a non-stock ROM that doesn't break GPS. I've tried several so far. I can't use any CM7 ROM or anything based off CM7, as GPS is useless. Recently I tried MIUI Bulletproof and loved it, but sure enough, GPS would lose signal during GPS Navigation. The only ROMs that consistently have fully functional GPS for me are the rooted Gingerbread official release and some variations like G-Lite.
There's nothing wrong with these ROMs, but I'd like to run something that has the insane speed and increased functionality that the awesome devs here and elsewhere create. It just get frustrating finding a cool new ROM, loving all the features, then finding that, as always, GPS constantly drops connection or fails to lock at all. I've done all the tricks like efs_wipe and even a proposed workaround bug fix in the General section, but no joy as of yet. So I'm back to vanilla 2.3.4. Nothing exciting, but GPS is flawless. Anyone have any tips of ROMs I may have not tried where I can get best of both worlds? Figured it won't hurt to ask.
Interesting. I'm running CM 7 and my GPS has been working fine. Assuming you did a full wipe between installs and all that recommended stuff?
Yup, I always do a Superwipe+ that does a good scrub as well as wipes the efs partitions. Plus I manually wipe the Dalvic cache. From what I've gathered, random G2 users just cannot avoid GPS problems running anything that isn't stock. CM7 and MIUI give me major GPS woes, whereas stock ROMs give me no issues whatsoever. I've been trying to get to the bottom of this since January and not much luck.
Are you sure u got no hardware problems with ur phone/gps?
My gps is working very good @cm7!
I got the same issue you said with me hd2... gps got lost, never found gps, phone freezes @navigation...
The end of the story was that my hd2 has to be repaired by HTC.

I feel like you're not going to get anywhere with this, since you've obviously tried ROMs that work fine for others. I had problems with GPS on CM7 before, but a efs wipe (and performing Superwipe+ thereafter) fixed any and all issues. The only thing I can think of is to try CM7 nightlies off of CWM (a few user reviews under each) instead of the release. I'm on nightly 204, and everything from GPS, to performance, to battery life is flawless. There's always the option of getting the G2 replaced and trying again.
Good luck!

Well, he did say he has flawless GPS on stock 2.3.4, so we can safely rule out actual issues with hardware.

Exactly. Since GPS works perfectly with stock ROMs, I have to rule out hardware problems. If it was a problem across the board, I'd already have a replacement in hand. The only thing I have not tried yet is RIL matching. Can anyone link me to it? I know the dev who had it up on these boards left XDA and took all his stuff with him. Not sure what it involves or if it may potentially help, but maybe worth a shot. I've tried flashing a few different radios and am now on the "official" radio that came with latest OTA update.

Doing the efs wipe should fix gps problems
Post on ril matching http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902752 another idea is the change the gps.config file to the US server
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030
Also if using superwipe+ there is a new version with support for 4ext partitions

Thanks for the links. I've tried efs wipe several times. Done it manually via terminal emulator and flashed the zip/superwipe+. I'll look into the RIL matching. The GPS config options appear to be specific to Verizon and the Samsung Captivate, so not sure if that one is an option for me. Thanks again for linking me to all this.

Changing the GPS server should work for any ROM,Im using unity and in the uk so not carrier specific just a matter of opening a file and changing the server values,
Luckily I've never had any serious problems with my GPS so I'm running out of ideas, there is also an app called GPS status is useful but if wiping the efs data is not helping then not sure if the app will help, best of luck finding a solution
You should check out the latest "unofficial" ILWT CM7 212b by tsubus. He includes an option to use stock HTC GPS drivers. I updated my radio to. 30, and flashed 212b (which includes the efs data wipe) and my GPS works flawlessly now. Highly recommend it. Link is in my signature.
All features are now part of/options in version 213, and all subsequent releases. Seriously, it's worth a shot...

For some reason, around a few days ago, my G2 started killing it's mobile data connection sometimes when the GPS is being called upon.
It happens around 70% of the time whenever a GPS signal is needed.
Also, the gps icon in the notification bar keeps on flashing.
Using a CM7.0.3 atm, but i've tried to wipe everything and install 7.1.0 and the problem persists.
Gonna try a stock TMo rom later as well.
I suspect it could be the carrier's fault, since i moved to a new carrier 11 days ago, but as it is in my country, unless i've got some kind of proof i can't really complain.
I've got a logcat dump (-b radio) from right after the 3G dying here. Main problem is that i can't really make any sense out of it.
I'd love your input regarding this, and if you can locate the problem in the logcat it would be completely awesome.

And check this out. You may need to try out another radio, and another rom, as I see you plan to. Go to G-Lite before you go fully stock, and I would try putting another radio on your CM7 rom before you go to G-lite.
Happy Hanukkah!
Hi,
My GPS stopped working.
After much research and several tests, changing radio\RIL, stock rom.... could not get the GPS working.
Some time ago, after a long time just picking up one satellite, now does not get any.
Is there any tool or application to test the hardware?
Thanks.
rom do you use?
I noticed this with CM7.1.
The stock rom I tested was the latest 2.3.5 OTA.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17081413
Hi,
I tried this with the stock rom and did not work.
I tried with CM7.1 and still not show any satellite.
Sugestions?
Just for the record:
Radio - 27.14.04.28_M
Have the same issue
I like Cyanogen 7.1, but it seems that the gps doesn't work on DHD. Too bad, because it is a really good rom. I have radio 26.10.04.03_M. The same thing as described by others happen:
I turn on the gps, it start searching, and then it stops and the icon disappears even that the gps is still showed as being turned on
My case is different.
Worked for me several months without problems, and fast.
But stop working.
Someone?
I've tried modifying hardware (antenna), changing to stock rom, tried some different radios, editing gps.conf....
I do not know what else to do.
Anyone know some software to test the GPS hardware?
Have you tried changing the NTP servers?
Changing the NTP servers is part of the link spikey001 posted.
Have you tried flashing agps? I haven't got a thread to point you too but there is one in the DHD ROM section. There are about 6 different gps things you can flash, hopefully one of them will work.

You mention that your GPS used to work. Have you recently dropped your phone? It's possible that the GPS antenna contacts might not actually be making contact anymore (either through trauma or just plain old age)? If none of the SW fixes get your GPS working then perhaps you might actually have to do a HW mod?
See this thread for a HW fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318892
Don't worry, it's not as scary as it looks!
Hi,
sounds like what mine did.
Tried software and even made the fysical contact better for the gps-module itself.
No luck.
The solution for me was to buy a new gps-module on ebay for 5-10 us$.
Worked like a charm.
Good luck!!
Thanks for all the help.

I've tried the HW fix but did not work, still no satellites.
