Hi Everyone,
Tell me, why would anyone actually choose an iPhone over a Desire/N1?
As I see it, the only thing an iPhone has over the Desire is the volume of apps, but can you give me a list of what the Desire/N1 has over the iPhone?
Speaking as someone who has had WinMo, Nokias etc. I can honestly say that my iPhone 3GS is the best device I have ever had. User interface is functional and simple and I can find an app for everything - plus the apps are mature. JB adds a new level to it, and provides the customisability that I love to do.
What I don't like about the iPhone is the restrictive nature of it, with the extreme control that Apple has. Ofc i have jailbroken the iPhone but Apple are making it increasingly harder to do this and I fear we are not far away from them making it near impossible to do so (hell you already have a situation with the newest phones having a tethered jb - i.e. they need to re-jb if their phone loses power, or is rebooted).
That being said, and my heart being in Linux land, my next phone will hopefully be the HTC Desire. I love the customisability of Android, the less restrictive nature, and for someone like me, I reckon i'll get more fun out of it.
The Desire's hardware beats a 3GS hand down. Android is getting there but is not as mature (obviously) as the iPhone OS, and nor are its Apps. But they are getting there. The Desire is a good enough handset that in a years time, Android really will be competing with the iPhone and your hardware will still be capable.
My wife will get the iPhone....
because the iPhone has the best apps. when it comes down to it, that's all the average smartphone user cares about...

And that's the discussion I keep having with my mates. With the Desire's hardware and Eclair+Sense, the only real thing that the stock iPhone 3GS has going for it now is the apps. My argument there is that once a developer has perfected their app on/for the iPhone they'll likely(/hopefully) then be seeking the challenge, and the revenue(?), from launching it on the Android Market. The Desire's/N1's/Droid's hardware specs and Eclair's open customizability and capability would then allow them to take it to the next level.
1. Better UI controls. Android has great homescreens but when it comes to app UI controls, it lags behind Android.
2. More and Better casual applications. Many more games. Can be purchased around the world in 70+ countries. Much more free/promotion games compared to Android.
3. Better camera than the camera of most Androids.
A couple of things the Desire has going for it vs the iPhone:
*Camera: 5MP w/ flash vs 3MP w/o flash
*Screen resolution: 800x480 vs 480x320
*Battery: I can't back this up but I'm guessing the AMOLED display will drain less juice than the iPhone's traditional backlit LCD. Also, removable battery is always better than non-removable.
*Multi-tasking vs no multi-tasking
*Non-obstructive notications
*Useful information on homescreen vs just a bunch of icons
*File explorer
*Text reflow in browser
*Hardware buttons!

what? This post makes no sense what so ever.
you mean it has a GPU? And are you implying that android phones do not have one?
Maybe you should read up on programming for android:

I went from Nexus One to iPhone 3G S because of iPhone has much better quality apps. Apps make sense as they are thoughtfully designed and hence are easy to use unlike some Android applications which have every feature under the sun but are unintuitive. A good example of this is Astrid.
The good news is 2Do developer have confirmed they are working on 2Do port for Android. Then you will all understand what I am trying to say.
Also, iPhone has much much better games then Android.

I just find the iphone very limited, I've had the 3GS for a month and I'm terribly bored of it. The only reason I still use it over my old touch pro is because it's faster for web browsing.
Android sounds like the kind of OS I want, very customizable very flexable.

Exactly I love the apps and games I got on my Ipod touch but I wouldn't buy an Iphone cause I dont like that Att crappy service.
All hardware aside, you have to approach this as a standard customer. Said customer buys into what marketing sells; buys into all the hype generated around the fanboys spread across the internet; buys what they are told to buy.
Because of the market saturation, apps developed for the iphonepods will be more cared for and mature a lot faster. Facebook is a prime example of this. If you don't use facebook then this example is lost on you The iphone has a fantastic fbook app that keeps you in the app and offers almost all the same functionality as you would find in a desktop browser; almost. Fbook on android however...not even close. This is a deal breaker for those who live and die with fbook.
So you have a bajillion apps being sold every second in apple's app store generating a ****ton of revenue for all involved giving people reason to create solid apps. There is some pretty solid DRM involved (though not unbreakable ) preventing app piracy which leaves the devs with a peace of mind.
Now take the android world. While android is found on more devices now than I could possibly think of, the average user would never know it. There is no advertising (well nothing compared to the viral campaigning apple has successfully pulled off), no customer draw...android is, for the most part, word of mouth.
So with the above in mind, the numbers just are not there for developers to devote a ton of time into making apps comparable to what you will find on the iphone...not yet anyways.
App protection is another biggie. So with both platforms you require the device to be unlocked/rooted in order to get around this. With the android platform it's a bit easier; once you have root, you have free apps. With the iphone it's a bit trickier but still very doable; one layer beyond simply rooting (jailbreaking). Don't kid yourself if you think devs are not aware of this.
Thankfully, the majority of users on both platforms don't use their powers for evil or we would see a serious drop in apps I bet.
So why would anyone choose an iphone? Apps and itunes.
Apps are a big deal; they are a means to keep in touch with friends and family, they are a means to get unlost, to get lost, to waste time, to save time...the better the app, the more efficient you can do all of these tasks.
People want to carry their music with them. Love it or hate it, itunes is here to stay and a ton of people have fully entrusted their music to itunes. an iphone means everything in itunes is easily synced.
Personally, I went from dumbphones to winmo (moto Q on verizon) to the g1 (t-mobile) and never returned to winmo. I switched to att from tmo and without really thinking about it, I gave my g1 to a friend in favour of an iphone3g. I should have just kept my g1 on edge on att...now while still on att, I am happily back to android with my nexus one. For me, everything stated above carries zero weight in value compared to the freedom I have with my n1.
...thursday rants are fun
Simply because Average Joe (or Jane for my part) doesn't read XDA
I think the more appropriate question is "Why would anyone choose the iPhone?".
Consider this scenario:
You're playing a casual game and listening to your music at the same time. You want to change to another playlist. You can't even do that without completely exiting your game.
I can't fathom using a supposedly smart device that can't even handle that simple of a multi-task.
I think the reason why iphone is still a big winner is only because of the apps and games.
Do u guys think good apps make a good OS?
Why Windows is still now the most popular OS?

I have had a variety of smartphones from Blackberrys, to Android. My android phones are by far the best ones. I have up my iphone and ordered the G1 for the original release date. Even though at that time it was not on the same level as the Iphone it opened the door for us to have phones like the Nexus One, Desire, Legend, Moto Droid...ect.....tons of phones that give us choices. My Nexus one out the box was amazing, rooting the thing made it even more ridiculous.
As many of you have said previously, the only thing that I can see is better on iPhone than on Desire / Nexus is the Games, so I do not understand yet why you pay so much more if you buy this just for games? why not buy an iPod if you want the games/mp3.
Because its the trendy thing to buy.
I brought an ipod touch when they first came out. I was sick of it within a day. The apps are pretty well junk or gimmicks, I brought a ton of them never use them.
Games yeah right, maybe sitting in the car waiting for someone but really there crap and you are better off just getting on the net and reading XDA
There also to big to put in your pocket and use as an mp3 player.
But good on apple for marketing to the sheep so well and there about to do it again with the ipad!
Hi ,
I had HTC HD , and now i am on my way to buy a new Phone.
I wont buy 3GS , because in 3 months we will have a new Iphone , so that will be sucky sucky. on the other hand - if i pay so much for a phone i want to be able to play on it , and i saw some tests , showing Iphone has much more FPS in games.
is it a GPU thing ? if so , why would i buy the Desire.
currently this is the only thing -
if Desire had good games with good quality 3D and nice FPS . no reason to even consider 3GS or any iPhone .
Hardware (processor speed) comparisons are simply "wrong". Numbers on paper mean nothing because the OS software are not the same. Don't know why people don't get this...
That video that idandush referred is a good example.
Its this Windows better than other mobile OS?
Why?
Why I have to choose Win phone 7 instead of Android?
Can some one tell me please?
thanks
For me, one sentence will answer all...because we want to try something new and fresh.
However, the usability and satisfaction towards the OS or device are depends on your personal preference.
IMHO, I'm not really satisfied with this new OS,it is still in premature stage.
Much better user experience than WM and Android. More restrictions than both though, but most people aren't affected by this.
WP7 is smooth, clean and simple. It's generally very fast and elegant in operation. But right now it has bugs...at least for the pre-nodo devices. It currently lacks the higher-end hardware associated with the latest Androids and the iPhone, such as no front camera or dual-cpu. It doesn't use a plug & play expandable memory card...though you can expand the system memory with a little complexity on some devices...without voiding the warranty.
MO, its nice and fast with good apps. Big and easy to the eyes fonts.
But the weak point it gave you the feeling the phone is tied down as if you rent instead of owning it e.g. cant transfer documents to pc(not everyone have sharepoint),
no backups on anything(apps with user data or sms..anything) shud the phone needs to be reset or repaired.
If you are a patience type, then waiting for updates will not be an issue for you.

Well, if you're going to confuse User INTERFACE with User EXPERIENCE, than your post is correct. Unfortunately, you are confused. The Experience goes beyond the interface. I'm not going to put my huge list in yet another thread. I'll leave it at that.
@ OP:
In the end it depends on your requirements and how you use your phone. The way I'd rank them, depending on what you need most:
Phone/Battery Life: Nokia (Symbian) > Blackberry
Media: WP7 > iOS (Phones with Bigger Screens, Zune Pass/Zune, etc.)
Gaming: iOS > WP7 > Android (Too many Android games are of terrible quality/bug-riddled).
Browsing: Android > iOS (More Browser Choices, bigger screens, 4G devices, etc.)
Communication (SMS/MMS/IM/eMail and Business Communications): Symbian > Blackberry > Android (WP7 would be in last place here, IMO)
Business User: Windows Mobile > Symbian > Blackberry (BB loses points due to needing BES for decent Exchange support - WM gains points for supporting every Exchange Policy and having Office Mobile 2010)
If having Voice Nav is a huge thing than Android > Symbian > Windows Mobile
If you're an Appaholic: iOS > Android > Blackberry
Since I know where you're probably (even if secretly) coming from, I'll just cut to the chase here... WP7 isn't as good as Android. The User Interface is better and it performs better in many cases (this is device dependent, to a large degree), but the level of services integration in addition to the functionality drop-off going from Windows Mobile to Windows Phone 7 is just not good when compared to other platforms. Microsoft failed to capitalize on their Windows Live services with WP7 (billed as a consumer device) and then they failed harder by locking down the platform so tight that the development community can't even help them close these gaps.
WP7 is a necessary step forward for Microsoft, but the platform is Beta in functionality and Release Candidate in User Experience. From what has been coming out of Microsoft, it also seems like nothing more than a transition platform. Don't get it until Mango releases to all carriers if you are coming from iOS or Android. You never know what the functionality gap is until you actually use this device on a daily basis. Using it for 20 minutes in a carrier store is not enough.
However, for those moving up from a feature phone and don't really want all the extra fluff of a true smartphone OS, then WP7 may suite them well...

Well, I personally moved from a "true smartphone OS" (WM) to iOS to WP7 with a couple of brief stops with Android, and it suits me very well. Because I can do more with it, and better, including work (which for me is primarily communication via email and checking/quick editing office documents). While I will 200% agree that WP7 isn't a "PC in your pocket" in terms of power/flexibility/features by any stretch of imagination, and it isn't a business powerhouse, whether and how platforms fit your specific needs is what matters. Each platform has its own specific bugs or quirks which you may not notice at all or they can turn your phone ownership into hell.
You're going to have the "hate it"s and the "love it"s, with a good mix of fanboys in the middle, so my advice is to get an actual device in your hands and play a while with it.
Read about its features and current limitations and if it fits your needs, it has the apps you require and you enjoy it, take it... I know I did.

Actually, this is a crucially important piece of advice. As uniform as WP7 devices are, I had a very difficult time getting a phone for myself. My major problem with the current crop is miserable amount of storage. I had to go for a carrier branded Mozart to get at least 16GB, and while it wasn't SIM locked and doesn't cause too much hassle, I would advise that you avoid branded handsets if possible. You won't get any added value from them but updates will be delayed, among other things.

IMO you are asking the question wrong. It's a bit like asking if a Hummer is a better car than a Prius? With no qualifiers you will get as many answers saying the Hummer as you get people saying the Prius.
Now, let me add some more information. I live in the country, have three dogs (who like going for drives), we get ****loads of snow in the winter and them side roads leading up to the property are not exactly prioritized when it comes to removing snow.
For me it (Hummer) definitely is, but for them there city folks probably not so much
If you'd like to add some more information about what you use your phone for, i.e. what is important to you - I'm sure we'll get you some good reasons why you should (or not) pick WP7.

The interface is indeed better, and the user experience is also better in general. MUCH better than WM's user experience; you can't deny that.
Similar to how the iphone couldn't do nearly as much as WM when it was released, but the user experience was much better. Everything "just worked" as they say. Some people have issues with WP but most don't have or care about any. It "just works".
Windows Phone 7 is by far the best OS I have used.
Android is very laggy. I can't tell you how many times I went to answer a call and couldn't because my Android device wouldn't respond in time.
Interface is unmatched. Way better than anything Android or iOS has to offer.
iOS is a good OS if you have the latest hardware (iPhone4), but the interface kills it for me. It's very boring.
Gaming experience is really awesome on WP7. Love the XBox Live integration/achievements.
Mostly everything just works without a hitch.
There are still bugs... but as an early adopter, I couldn't be happier.
Having both I say choose Android but watch WP7 for the future.
Currently WP7 offers very little to the customers.
It has very easy and nice interface but equally boring and dull to be honest.
Almost every thing this device can do is limited, maybe besides Zune and Xbox.
If you don't care about any more advanced features WP7 may be for you.
After 3 months of liking it I couldn't stand it anymore.
Limitations driving me crazy, stupid inconsistencies in performance plus Interface which is just a little bit too primitive (even if it's so easy to use).
Many people wrote here alot about both OS'es. Almost everything has been said.
For me WP7 is a massive disappointment. I gave it huge credit, bought my WP7 device for cash in December. But honestly the current situation is simply unacceptable at all.
Crippled features + no support in most countries with Marketplace, Maps, Bing and native Keyboard. If I think of it now I see it's ridiculous.
WP7 definitely is something worth interest because MS has all the services to make a perfect ecosystem in every possible area and that may be amazing. That was one of the reasons I bought it. But they don't do it now at all. You can do 100 times more on any other platform.
I suppose WP7 may be big hit once Nokia will jump on the market and WP7 will be much more opened. I think after Mango update this can be better and better.
But not now. Apparently MS has huge problem with the upgrade system what is not positive. My device still can't be updated although preNoDo was OK.
So a really competitive and finished product can be available around beginning of next year. Not before and it's too long to wait for me - I buy device to do the job!
I guess current WP7 is like an advanced beta where MS has it's learning curve.
And regarding the fluidity I say - people tell myths here.
WP7 lags sometimes terribly and current Android interations are really snappy.
I had a iphone then a Desire HD (which I still have) and now a samsung omnia 7 16gb, I also have a Ipad 1 so have a good idea of all of the OS's. All three are good phones, and getting any of the 3 different OS you can't go wrong really.
However I am loving WP7 so far even with the little quirks, the UI is really awesome and I much prefer it to Android in that regard, I spent hours using launcher pro and icons and lock screen mods and was never happy with how it looked whereas WP7 does all i need on that front and beautifully.
Also it's a lot smoother than android, though to be fair Android is as smooth as you need, the very little lags and jerks you get when scrolling are not big deals and I didn't actually notice them till I had both phones side by side, not sure why people make such a big deal about tiny jerkiness sometimes in the scrolling on Android.
IOS was a little too bland for me and I really wanted a better notification system as well as a bigger screen 3.5 was too small for web pages and gaming, though the amount of good quality apps was amazing, however I had my iphone for 3 years and I really only had about 20 apps, A few games to play when really bored and not at my PC.
Zune is awesome, million times better than Itunes, never used it before WP7 but now I am hooked, will be going from the trial to a paid zune pass too, works very well the streaming.
I also am impressed with the gaming on WP7 some very cool games in the market place, just a pity they are normally a lot more expensive than what you get on the iphone or android.
So overall WP7 does what I need (email, calendar, phone calls, and music with the odd game) and in a beautiful UI, for some people it wont do what they want and that's fine but for me it's great.
The Desire HD isn't used much at all anymore and I will probably ebay it soon. Really hope WP7 gets bigger as in my opinion it deserves a place in the the market even at this early stage of it's life
It completely baffles me as to why people continue to point out that WinPhone doesn't use dual cpus as though it has some negative affect on the phone or it's experience, even going as far as to compare it to Android phones which do use it. With it's first generation processor it still outshines newer Android devices. Performance? WP7 outperforms those dual cpu Android devices. Battery life, as so many have argued is the biggest positive? WP7 still gets better battery life. Also, how many people actually use front facing cameras? Really? I know quite a few people with MyTouchs and iPhone4s who have never done a video chat, and they've owned the devices since launch.
Just had to get that out there.
Really the only things where it suffers are in the app department....once the OS gets it legs(another year or so) it will be on par if not better than iOS. It doesn't beat out the Iphone 4(definitely better than the 3G and 3GS) and some android phones. I say some because Android is highly dependent on the phone you get. With Windows Phone you can pretty much go with any phone and they all work well. Im on my 3rd month with it and I still love it. Ive been through sony android phones, the iphone 3GS and a bada phone as well.

So I've always been an android dude, I have given the iPhone credit where it deserves but I never see why it sells so much. But this upcoming year looks very incrediby tough for Apple. Especially with the S3 and the One X. Do you think the same Apple lovers will still suck on Apples lolipop? Or turn to all these intense android phones?

iPhones will continue to be bought by the following:
-Apple fanboys
-People desiring a solid product that requires minimal figuring out and runs great out of the box
-People who want a simple phone that just works
-People who shop based on price tags
-People who don't compare features
-People who feel that Apple is an elite product and want the status (redundant maybe with the first on my list...)
-People who like talking to their phones for some reason
Google will continue to attract:
-Google fanboys
-People who love tinkering with their phones
-People who love freedom and choice with their phone
-People who compare features and prices closely
-People who love cutting edge technology
-People who like screens more than 3.5" in size
-People who like green robots delicious product names
All in all, I believe it will be a wash in terms of new fans coming and going. Both have attractive features, and pros and cons. I'll never buy an iPhone, but mostly due to Apple's insane price inflation and lack of SD card expansion (also the battery being non-removable, but I've forgiven HTC for that faux pas due to the other incredible things going on with the EVO LTE).

Insane price inflation? How much is a iPhone 4s / iPhone 4? Same as all new flagship phones.
Besides that, the iPhone 4s continues to lead in graphical performance months after release. The display is still one of the best on the market. And although Android has improved a lot, iOS continues to be the platform of choice for creative/innovative third party apps.
Btw, Android already has a bigger user base but the iPhone will continue to be the best selling single device.

Yes, insane price inflation. On Sprint, the 16 GB is 199, the 32 GB is 299, and the 64 GB is 399. $200 more for the extra space? Come on now. That's absorbent by today's memory prices. I'll take the EVO LTE and the 16 GB internal, expandable with SD slot, plus 25 GB cloud with dropbox (for 199).
As for the camera and display, many of the latest phones can top that (see One line by HTC, among others).
I had an iPod not long ago, and I'm not much more impressed with the iStore than I am with the Play Store. Both are so vast that they seem to have anything I need.
And personally, I was quite tired of the boring OS. It was reliable though, I'll say that.
But as for sales, of course it will be the number one seller. That's like comparing Big Mac sales vs. every other burger sold at McDonalds. The beauty of Android is the choice, which creates scattered sales statistics. I don't think this shows anything much about iPhones, but it shows the diversity in Android options.

Most 16GB Android phones are 199, many are more, so they are priced competitively. Esp considering how well Apple products hold their value. Don't add sd card, there are plenty of Android phones that won't have sdcard support as well.
None of that matters though, it will still be the best selling iPhone ever and make billions.

It all comes down to personal preference obviously. I'm not knocking Apple for their making of lots of money, they obviously will. I just don't like the fact that they charge $100 for an extra 16 GB ($20 maybe?), but people are willing to pay it so they may as well.
But I'm not sure that PLENTY of Android phones won't have SD support... unless we see a complete shift over to the cloud storage. That's one of Android's selling points, I don't see companies straying from that anytime soon. Although the One X shocked me with that lack of support.

Thanks for this link. I would NEVER consider an apple product, but these videos are a fantastic illustration as to how and why Android is vastly superior to iOS

Terrific video.
The guy presents and speaks well, with clear thoughts and sentences. Most people on YouTube sound like they're making things up as they go. This sounds like it was rehearsed - very nice video!
=] glad you got the point.... his videos aren't actually rehearsed .. he states he has no scripts this all coming from expierence/disappointment. although he loves both android and iOS but chooses android over iOS because it IS better. He's not done with all 6 parts but the first 4 are proof enough that android is more intuitive and "just works" even more efficiently than iOS.

I think that android grabs more to users that want to customize and make their phone truly unique and have total control. I have never messed with a jailbroken iPhone, but based on what I have heard its not nearly as customizable as a rooted droid. This helps apple keep a more stable/faster product due to simplicity. But to those like me that get bored with phones and rather than buying a new one can just grab a new rom, droid is #1.
I've switched over to the iPhone 4s and although I'm happy (for some time at least.) I do miss Android and I still very much appreciate my Evo 4g.
Although It might seem a bit dumb the main reasons I switched over was because of the screen, camera, and apps.
My Evo's charging port was also broken. If it wasn't I wouldn't have upgraded and instead gone with the new Evo this summer.
If apple doesn't step their game up majorly and the next iPhone is only a minimal upgrade from the 4s and for whatever reason they don't upgrade the damn screen size, I'm definitely going back to android.
Customization on the iPhone is a bit harder but there's plenty of themes and widgets like there is for Android and once u get the hang of it it's a piece of cake.
With these new phones having cameras as good as the iPhones, hd resolution displays, huge screens, the android market quickly catching up to apples app store (in terms of quality apps) it's hard not to go back to android. Sadly I only just upgraded 2 months ago.
Every now and then I still boot up my Evo and flash a new build of ics or miui ics just to calm my flash withdrawals.
Until the day comes that I return to android I will keep on lurking these forums like a creep
A lot of people do not realize that apple cannot change their products mainly because of their business plan. This is because they Bulk buy their parts. They pretty much have to leave it up to their amazing PR department to sell their consumers on the products they are going to release without the influence of other products on the market. Basically the next iPhone 5 is decided by their supply, not the market so any information given right now is pure speculation.

That video is preaching to the choir. We know the advantages of Android all too well. The reality os a majority of iPhone users have already made up their mind they want it and don't even bother to cross shop or even think about Android/WP7. It simply doesn't matter. I don't really want to call people like this stupid, they aren't interested in efficiency or configuring, they just want to use the simple, limited UI iOS has.

For ur comment on insane price - in India - unlocked iPhone - 900-1,000$
unlocked One X - 700$
And rest of Asia iPhone is expensive minimum by 100$ (depends on country) as compared to android flagships.
Will you say there is no price difference??

I think this is depends personals preference. To me, I prefer the iPhone, and have collected many nice resources and free apps for it, such as:
http://www.enolsoft.com/blog/must-have-iphone-4s-apps/
http://mashable.com/2012/02/10/free-iphone-apps-every-day/
For your information, this "10 Things iPhone Does Better Than Android" could be reference.
And now there is not iPhone 5, only iPhone 4S.
So I realize this thread might not go over well, but just looking for a little discussion to see where others stand.
I'm a die hard Googler. I currently own a Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. I couldn't live without Gmail and its advanced feature set. I use Google+, Maps, Calendar, Contacts, Photos, Music, etc. on a daily basis and I truly believe that Google's services blow Apple's crappy iCloud junk out of the water. iOS is a constrained OS that isn't scalable enough to satisfy my inner geek (I've used iPhones enough in the past to have learned this the hard way).
This brings me to the iPhone 5. Even though I know iOS isn't for me, and even though I can't stand Apple's direction with respect to mobile devices, I find the hardware extremely appealing. The level of engineering is exceptional, and the overall fit and finish results in a device that looks and feels like a work of art. The best analogy I can think of is that the iPhone is the Mercedes Benz while most Android handsets are your typical Honda or Toyota.
Am I the only one that is desperate for somebody to step up and make us a solid, well built, powerful Android device? It seems like Samsung is addicted to plastic, HTC insists on spoiling their otherwise solid hardware by bloating the whole experience with the crapware known as Sense, Motorola is intent on releasing 20 versions of the same funny looking device, and the rest are spinning their wheels. If somebody were to step up and offer an Android handset that had external appeal comparable to the iPhone, I am confident it would be the nail in the coffin for Apple's smartphone sales.
RANT COMPLETE
I hear what you're saying. While I want nothing to do with with the iphone, I could agree that maybe manufacturers could pay more attention to the form factor of most android devices. Don't get me wrong, I think my Nexus devices are gorgeous.

I agree with you 100 percent. When the iPhone 4 came out, it was hands down most sexiest looking phone out there. Their build quality feels amazing in the hand. I would have loved a phone that looked like that and ran android. Obviously the fragile ness is a downside as well as the early radio weakness aka death grip. The galaxy nexus was a huge step up in design for android and I think is still the best looking android device. I really hope manufacturers improve design. Even though functionality is great, I wasn't a fan of the SII or the SIII's design. The Sony Xperia phones are nice too but so far almost all android phones look the same. But damn is the Gnex sexy as hell especially when the screen is off.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
iPhones all look the same to me, since the first one, and personally I think the hardware/software of Nexus line devices are very well put together. I can agree that other manufacturer Androids tend to lack in solid design and hardware/software being well built for each other, but I strongly believe the Nexus is the solution for that issue. I feel no envy towards the iPhone 5.
Honest opinion without any need to bash on Apple.
Sent from my AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus.
I have to admit, even though the iPhone 5 is more of the same from 4/4s it is a nice looking and high quality phone. Android OEM's would do well to step up this area. And personally I don't mind plastic phones if the quality of the plastic is good, and the fit and finish are pleasing. I haven't inspected the gs3 up close yet but have played with one several times. It is a nice phone and very comfy in the hand. But Samsung would do well to mix up its image a little and come out with a metal phone or two, albeit engineered to overcome the reception issues that are possible with metal phones. Really wish Nokia had jumped in the android boat. They had a handset for everybody.
need more high def music...
I do like the build quality of the iphone as well. But I've also been thrilled in every way, shape and form with the GNex. And hey, drop either of'm and I'd say the Nexus has a better chance of no damage.
Yes, the iphone5 is a beautiful phone as far as hardware is concerned. In my opinion, The only manufacturer who can keep up with appealing hardware at the moment is HTC (I like their One series designs, but to each their own).
On top of hardware designs, I believe Android is also lacking one other "feature" compared to the iPhone. I intentionally use the quotes, because I am referring to the lack of quality accessories that are available for us to choose from. Apple did well with their aftermarket electronic accessories because they were supported very well by other companies. Android can't really do this, because we have so many different form factors when it comes to hardware, and the major one being the location of the charging port on each phone. If Android standardized the location of the charging port, accessories would be much easier to engineer for Android. However, this may be an after-thought soon since we have NFC and there would be no need for a physical connection between accessories and the phone itself. The lack of NFC and the changed connector will be the downfall of the iPhone.
And lastly, my biggest gripe has to do with the quality control of Android manufacturers. I've personally only ever had Sammy Androids, but I gotta say, they suck at QC. My Droid Charge had sporadic radio issues, resulting in crackling voice calls regardless of radio updates. Now I'm on the Gnex and I've yet to see someone who has a FLAWLESS screen. Purple tinting, banding, burn-ins, low brightness issues...
Regardless, I am not going to support Apple at this day and age. Not a fan of their business practice, and I don't like being associated with the majority of iPhone user who aimlessly throw their money at a shiny new toy w/o knowing much about it.
sure the iphone is sexy that you cannot deny and that has always been how Apple does things. They put a great deal in designing an attractive product so that it appeals to the mass market who sometimes do not care about the functionality, performance, and hardware specs. This has helped them tremendously in getting people buying the phone because of its looks.
It is hard for the other manufacturers to compete against Apple since not only they have to compete in the industrial design but also compete in the hardware specs. I have to say, with non-iPhone devices, HTC seemed to be the most creative in terms of design with their latest One lines. They make one sexy phone that is packed with features. Unfortunately, it does not get as much attention as Samsung device because people are very locked into the whole Galaxy line of product as Samsung has already established its name and branding with it. In the Windows front, I think Nokia is doing a great job and it always has been quite good at designing hardware that looks good. But sadly for Nokia, Windows Phone is just not as popular as Android.
Not a fan of ANY apple OS nor am I a fan of their business practices, However their design and quality is extremely appealing. Jony Ivey has done an incredible job at apple and is probably the real factor behind their success, purely on aesthetics.

If I could get an iPhone 5 running stock JB perfectly, I would switch in a second.
Having said that, anyone see Engadget's battery rundown test? 11 hours of battery looping a video with LTE on? I hope this sets the bar for future devices in the industry. I don't care that the iPhone did it, I just hope that other manufacturers follow suit.

I actually considered a switch to the dark side and get an iPhone5. They only thing holding me back was the lack of simultaneous voice and data on CDMA carriers, even with LTE.

I had a couple wp7 phones and trust me, the os leaves a lot to be desired.
the app store is a barren wasteland, multitasking hardly works and little things left out (like being able to control separate volumes, like headset and ringtone, or ringtone and alarm)
OP, I agree with many of your points. I dislike Apple and I hate itunes even more but I am jealous of their systematic update process and dammit everything just works approach. My wife has an iPhone 4 so I get to play with one daily. Even apps that are available on both platforms seem more polished on iO6, I realize there are a number of reasons for this.
I too have a GN and an N7. I love the openness and customization of Android but frankly I'm getting way too busy with real life to keep tweaking and adjusting. And while fragmentation has become the big buzz word this year it has annoyed me since I purchased my first Android phone 2 years ago (Samsung Captivate). 5 android phones later and it's still a big problem. Meanwhile my wife's iPhone 4 which she purchased at the same time just got iO6.
Btw, my 2 "Nexus" devices aren't even running the same os (If you tell me to root my phone or buy a GSM Nexus I will yell at you very loudly while throwing rotten eggs).

I think it all comes down to one thing and one thing only. Personal Preference
I own an iPhone 4 (For work) and a GNex
I love my Android phone because of what it can do for me. I can tweak it, customize it, and know that I can do everything on it.
My iPhone? Meh, A big brick of glass in my opinion. It's broken the minute it gets dropped. But some people like what it has to offer. It's simplistic in the sense that things work (I've seen a few people say this in the thread) BUT the only reason it works is because you have to do things their way. (iTunes sync, 1 computer at a time, etc) There are a lot of things that fail when it comes to the iPhone that a lot of people hate. That's why they go elsewhere beyond Apple. The one thing you cannot deny though is how good Apples marketing is. They're extremely well known. Because of this they have a lot of loyal, blind, fans. Even though they don't know the specs, release dates, etc. They want what is essentially great marketing.
Now I personally believe that if you were to sit everyone down and hand them 3 phones (An iPhone, Windows phone and an Android phone) It would probably be pretty even across the board. Why? Personal Preference.
At the end of the day Apple is still going to be playing catch up to everyone else. Why isn't the iphone 5 an HD device? The resolution is sub par considering everything is HD now.
I'll end with that I'd much rather have a Windows phone that is truly simplistic in every sense of the word than another iPhone. For those of you who think that the iPhone 5 is a beautiful piece of great hardware? I point you to the HTC 8X, a Windows phone that's exceptionally beautiful.
Hi,
I was planning on buying nexus 7, but then prices for tab pro 8.4 have dropped, if google nexus 7 lte costs 350$, then why not add some and buy samsung tablet with better performance, better screen and micro sd slot and many more advantages.
But from what i see, modrianlte is very short on customization, wifi version has some support at least, but lte has like 1-2 custom rom available, no custom kernels. Is the reason for such lack of customization because its too early ? Or the tablet isnt just popular enough ?
I'd like to know the same. The galaxy tab pro 8.4 looks like the closest thing to the perfect tablet to me, with the nexus 8 being somewhat a little further away. I'd love to get it asap as the price here in Sweden is almost identical to the "big" nexus 7 while being significantly better spec'd . so I'm hoping the lack of development (and dedicated forums for the different gtab pro iterations) is due to the young age of the device. Maybe someone with some more insight can shed some light on this
Keep in mind this tablet is having a bit of a short lifespan unfortunately. Blame Samsung.
Here in Canada, it's no longer available for purchase anymore and I had a HELL of a time finding the "white" Samsung OEM case for my white Tab Pro 8.4
I live in the largest city in Canada and only ONE store still had the white cases, and they only had 3 or 4 of them left, all for full MSRP price...
It's a great tablet, but IMO Samsung is a bit of a foolish company. I don't know which idiot (maybe someone in marketing) thought it would be good to release the Tab S just 3 months after general availability of the Tab PRO.
This is my first Samsung product since the Nexus S and probably my last (not due to product quality, but due to Samsung being a foolish company).
well that **** my upgrading plans. Good for them. New Revision, slightly worse specs, higher price. Now what. I love the N7 but its just a little bit too small and apart from the T320 there isnt really anything that compares by a long shot in the 8-9" range.
thanks anyways, guess the only thing to do is wait for the N8 or an upgraded N10.

don't get me wrong, i love my Tab Pro 8.4, but i think i just have to get accustomed to using it stock (or stock + root) rather than having a HUGE selection of ROMs/kernels like my Nexus 4
my thoughts exactly. Im coming from 1st gen n7 and the n4 and im addicted to flashing sth new almost weekly so of course im used to a lot there and id never expect anything close to the variety of roms and generaly development on a the galaxy tab series. But as it is probably the most bought tablet series out there i was hoping for there atleast to be a certain amount development for it. With Google taking so long and this being such an incredible deal for the money i had hoped that that would stoke development for the tab pro here on xda.
Can you think of any alternatives offering atleast a FHD screen, not too old A15 processor and 2 gigabytes of ram for under 450 USD in a <9.9" package?
well new nexus, htc nexus 8 or 9, seems to be not the thing we are looking for, word around says it is going to expensive.
Tab S is a scam, i don't know what kind of idiot would buy that piece of crap over iPad mini.
From my point, i want to buy a tablet and use it for a long time, just like my galaxy nexus phone of which im very happy, i'm not planing on to buy, try and sell.

Nope. Your criteria is very similar to my own! Before this tab became widely available, I was going to get the LG g pad 8.3,but its hardware is worse than the tab pro obviously. Especially the screen, ugh.
Basically, for 8" tabs it's either this or the Tab S.
BTW I think from a "sales" point of view, there are more galaxy tab 3's and 4's out there... But let's be honest even if more people have those (which in turn causes more development) their hardware is pathetic for anyone over the age of 10, lol
I'd say stick with this one and try to get all your friends to get one too, boost sales
Most unpleasant situation would be would be if idiotic samsung sold all Tabs and stopped producing.
Buy used one from swappa or CL. Then sell it when Nexus 8/9 comes out. I traded my N7 2012 for $50 GC and after all the deals/coupons/perks the tab pro cost me $240. I don't care about custom roms on tablet , all I care about is root. But on my phone I need latest the Android version so my next phone is going to be a Nexus.
I think that once you change the launcher and freeze a few apps the tab runs pretty good and you can even root it if you want. Nexus 7 is good but still smaller screen, lower resolution and slower CPU. There are a couple stockish ROM and CM for the models using a Qualcomm CPU, I find the situation not so bad looking at how young the tablets are,

All just rumor for the time being, but if the Nexus 8 is going to be at the $400 price point, I would wager it would be with impressive specs and features. Yes, the Nexus 7 had a "budget" set of specs and features, but also appeals to a much lower price point (currently $229, release was $299 I believe?). Rumor also has it that its being made by HTC, which makes arguably the most beautiful smartphones around, and briefly did so with tablets. So the build quality may rival or even surpass the iPads (in my opinion the HTC M7 and M8 easily surpass the current iPhones).
I for one am happy to see the "race to the bottom" on price for small form factor Android tablets started by Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire has somewhat cooled down. Manufacturers are started to recognize that some folks actually want quality, not just cheap.

I didn't mind paying $399 for the Pro 8.4 soon after release. The exterior design isn't quite as high-end as the Ipad Mini, but it has a higher resolution screen, MicroSD, etc.
More importantly, I'm not interested in the closed Apple ecosystem. The iPad was never a real contender for me.
But I also realize and agree that the mass market is not going to see it that way. To many, a tablet is a tablet (many don't distinguish or even understand the difference between Android and iOS); and furthermore Apple has more brand recognition and respect than Android (to the masses). Android tablets need to either carry more features and/or come in at a lower price point than the iPad in order to sell.

Indeed, that's exactly what i want to say.
Anyway, iOS has more exclusive content than android, some fine games, apps first come out in the AppStore, then Android, but sometimes developers refuse to make an android version, or crappy android port.
For example, a fun app called ElfYourself was first to come out in iOS then it was ported to android, but to compare both official apps android version looks crappy, laggy, lacks some features, it was probably ported by some other developers.
That's why i want iOS tablet.

If you want to talk about very particular apps and games, than yes iOS has more "exclusive" content. But there are plenty of apps for any purpose on Android, whether it be games, utilities, etc. Seriously, both iTunes and Play Store currently boast over 1.2 million apps. It used to be a big deal for iTunes to tout there number of apps when it was 50,000 or 60,000 etc. But honestly, once it went into the tens of thousands, why does it even matter? A few dozen good ones is enough. You don't even hear Apple or Google mention the total number of apps anymore, because its now irrelevant.
Yes, the quality is not always there (and there is a lot of crap to dredge through on the Play Store), but its getting better. Fact of the matter is that iOS users spend more money on apps. But on the other hand, developers can no longer ignore the fact that Android now has more market share (at least for phones) than iOS in the US (and its not even close globally). They simply can no longer ignore that customer base.
If you like iOS, then fine. Apple makes fine devices. But I personally can't stand how Apple dictates what the customer wants; instead of listening to what the public wants. How the OS looks, how it works, the device form factor (Steve Jobs "Nobody is going to buy a big phone"). iOS has hardly changed since it began. And the biggest changes to the OS appearance have actually largely stolen from HTC Sense, of all things (talk about coming full circle!). It took what, 3 or 4 years for Apple to even let folks change their wallpaper background on the iPhone? Come on!
I'm not a fan of iOS, im just trying to make point for myself, maybe you are right, maybe my infos are outdated. I just don't do much gaming or surfing or even use many kind of apps, cuz of tiny screen of the phone, that what i want to change by buying a tablet

I'm not saying you are wrong about the apps (at least particular apps or ports). iOS certainly does get more attention from software developers. And if your goal is particular apps, games, etc. than you might not be happy with an Android tablet. As you mentioned, they don't all come to Android. And if they do, they sometimes don'r run as smoothly or get updated as often as the iOS counterparts.
But for me, there are plenty of great apps to keep me busy. I'm not a big gamer (but play a few sometimes) and most often use my tablet to web browse, read books, comics, and watch Netflix and other videos.
I'm also a big user of various Google services (Gmail, Calendar, Google Maps), and their integration into Android simply has no comparison.
