Alright, hopefully I'm just being a 'tard and not looking in the right place. I took my phone from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 last night, and I have allllllmost everything set up the way that I want it. The only thing that's missing it the backlight for the four softkeys (menu/home/back/search). I want them to stay lit whenever I have the screen on. I've searched, but all the threads that I turned up were people that couldn't get them to turn off!
Can anyone point me in the right direction, or is it something I just need to get used to?
Thanks,
n1n00b
Its a bug, sometimes they turn on sometimes they don't. I hardly pay attention to them anymore as I've gotten used to it

happens to me off and on. Pretty common actually, not a big issue to me since at this point we should have the layout memorized

This is a known issue. They won't work when the screen comes on initially.
If you leave the screen untouched for about 5 seconds, they will come on when you touch the screen. You can also get them to come on by adjusting brightness. They will work until the screen turns off.

Not quite what I meant... I'm referring to the fact that, once they /are/ lit, if you don't touch the screen for a few seconds, they turn off. I want them to be on as long as the screen is on. You can set this to happen in the OEM TouchWiz OS, but not with CM9.

Not a fix lol easier to just adjust brightness from status bar to get them on...
same thing with the screen brightness... it's not as bright as it is with stock rom when you dont have power saver enabled..

I think I misunderstood. I thought you wanted them to stay on when the screen is on. The directions I gave you do that on mine. What was it you want the keylights to do exactly?
Personally I think the screen brightness is actually too bright except in when out in bright daylight.

Is the screen brightness supposed to drastically change when auto brightness is enable. I've been playing around with it and noticed that when auto brightness is enable the screen will drastically change in different lighting conditions (with a couple second delay) For example, ill walk into a darker room the screen will get a lot dimmer after a couple of seconds and v-versu. The reason I asked is that my eco 4g would gradually adjust to point t where I didn't even notice.

I've noticed it rapidly changing like it can't decide a few times, and overall it's a bit too dim outdoors. Coming from an Evo as well and I never noticed it changing either.
Just going to keep an eye on it, not a huge issue for me. Might see if there's any way to override and manually specify the auto brightness thresholds.
There's a second setting called "Auto adjust screen power" further down on the display page - it could be that. It's some sort of thing that analyzes what's actually on the screen and tries to adjust for it.
I think it may just be a samsung thing. I have a Galaxy Tab 7" and I noticed that it was doing this as well, and it drove me crazy. I just went into settings>display>brightness and turned it down manually to just under halfway indoors and if I know Im going outside, i turn it all the way up.
Ive also noticed thst it was auto adjusting even when i had it disabled which was probablt the "power adjustment" thing... But once i caught it turning the brightness down to "prevent overheating"!?

Really?! Thats bizarre. I wonder if it will constantly have the screen down while wireless tether is running.

Thanks. I also have auto adjust disabled. Since others are seeing it then I assume its a Samsung thing. Ill wait to see if others confirm. BTW this may just be me being a geek. I notice every little thing. The other is that the buttons at the bottom of the phone aren't as sensitive as the eco.

A tip I read somewhere but haven't tried yet is to turn auto brightness off and when you do, hold down on the notification bar (don't pull it down, just hold a finger on it) and slide left or right to adjust brightness on the go. Not for sure if it works but give it a try (I'm chargin my phone while it's off now so I can't yet).

Can't remember anymore besides the screen shot one which has been mentioned. Tap home and the power button simultaneously. Also can't remember where I read it.

I would honestly say its a combination of things BC I have used roms where its totally obvious (on froyo) where on others its completely impossible to notice the change.

I've had the brightness at the max, and turned off the Auto Adjust Screen Power option. Just while browsing XDA the screen dimmed, and when looking at the brightness setting it states "To avoid overheating, maximum brightness has been reduced.". This has happened at least three different times.
I'm hoping this isn't a serious issue. Have you had it do that multiple times for you as well?
Its probably been asked but a quick search turned up nothing.
I use screen filter at night to further reduce screen brightness but the capacitive buttons stay bright as hell. Is there any way to dim them as well???
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
If you are using Samsung dock and Desk Home app, that dims the buttons after a short while. I run cm7. But that's if you are not using the phone... there is no known way to dim them if it is in use

Hmm..are these not controlled through the kernel? If they blink when activated maybe there is a way to get them to behave in inverse, like off by default and blink only when touched? I would like to see them completely disabled..wondering why this can't be accomplished..

That would be pretty awesome. I'd like to see that as a feature. I'm sure it would help save some battery, and you can *never* have too much battery
Have you suggested that to any of the kernel devs?

Mine is not quite like that, my screen still works fine but if I lock my phone repeatedly it will eventually cycle to this odd issue to where they white keys light up but the screen does not. Once the issue tosses then I can hit the lock key again and the screen is fine..

Yes there are settings for it that keep them on shorter or longer. My wife's relay uses this same setting to control the backlight on the slider keypad as well!
Look in DISPLAY and see if there is "touch key light duration" I have stock rom (actually wicked, based on stock) and I have 1.5 (default), 6, off, on as the 4 choices.
Yea permanent as long as the screen is on though! Thanks for replying man but I'm on CM10 that rom has a slightly different configuration.

I have tested this with two of these phones and it is confirmed there for sure. I live in Miami Florida there is a lot of Sun here so I have no problem testing this. Within any app if I am in the Sun and it is directly hitting my screen and my keyboard is popped up my screen flickers it's not a super bad Flicker it's light but it's definitely there looks like your screen is blinking really fast. I'm going to try on as many of these devices as I can but can anyone tell me if they are experiencing the same?

I definately recall seeing it. I know exactly what you are talking about. I don't see it anymore so either my kernel (ktoonsez) fixed it or it was a bloat app.
I can confirm the issue on my I9500. Its not only limited when under the sun, also happens when you turn the brightness level all the way down. I'm still on stock kernel, maybe custom kernel may solve the issue. No settings in stock has mitigated or fixed this issue for me.
