Hi all,
I know that on older phones the battery had to be emptied almost to 0% and the charge it to full. This was done for battery health or something?! Is the true for newer batteries?
Anyway I plan on buying a desktop dock, and i was wondering if it would damage my battery if i charge it when ever i can for random periods of time. Would this decrease my battery life time or in anyway damage it?
I think with this type of batteries you don't need to completely discharge and then recharge. In fact, that may harm the battery.
It's better to charge the battery whenever possible
yep ljesh is right
with lithium batteries that is not the case, i forget what the old batteries were called, but i think they began with a N..
You can't completely discharge these with normal usage since they have in-built lower end limits for protection.
-----------------------------------
- HTC Desire via XDA App -
You're talking about the memory effect.
The battery used in the Desire (Li-Ion/Li-Poly) does not have such a memory effect. (older did, like Ni-MH, Ni-Cd) So no, you don't have to and you shouldn't deeply discharge this type of battery.
Recharge it as soon as possible, as few as possible and let it charge till it's full without interrupting if possible.
Sometimes you'll read that you have to 'calibrate' the battery. You don't calibrate the battery, rather the charging controller, which estimates the battery capacity. Over the time this estimation can get wrong, thus you have to calibrate the controller by discharging the battery till it's empty and charging it till it's full (some do a few other tricks, too, however, it's only interesting if you have root). If you have issues with your battery (like shut-down at 10% or higher already) then consider such a calibration.
I have noticed that compared to my iPhone 4 charging the desire takes ages. Could it be because I am using a 3rd party wall charger?

yes!
The Desire can charge in two modes:
USB mode: Low current, can get charged from a normal 500mA USB port. Takes long
AC mode: High current, charges with 1A, only compatible AC adapters should be used.
How can the Desire detect what mode it can use:
If the Data+ and Data- lines in the USB cable are bridged, then it switches to AC mode, else it thinks it's connected to a USB hub or a device with max output of 0.5A.
So either get a AC Adapter which has those pins bridged, or modify a cable, or buy a USB cable which has those pins bridged already (don't know it exactly, but I think I've read that such a cable gets supplied by some HTC car adapter, but I don't know it for sure)
Just search about this topic, you'll find a lot of posts about it.
Thank you I will look for a proper chargeing cable.

Stock battery, no bump charging, less than stellar battery but I'm thinking Google music beta is the culprit.
Plugged in overnight and sometimes plugged into Car Charger.....And thank you for the charging hack, or whatever its called, that you included in your awesome Kernel Chad, because car charging wouldn't do anything before.
Plug in overnight to charge. unplug when I take my dog out fr his morning business. Plug into car charger on 20 minute drive to work. Unplug when the green light comes on. Gets me 6:30 am to anywhere between 6 and 8 at night with 50% + left when I leave work.
I keep it plugged in pretty much anytime I'm home, and always overnight...that may be too much, but I use Wireless Tether often at home, which really drains the battery. I do have a 1900mah battery from HTC Express, though. I've heard of some who have 2+ batteries that they switch out every day, but I personally don't want to constantly remove the battery cover.
plugs everywhere and charge when needed
Also once in a while it's a good idea to just turn off your Droid Inc and charge it up. You'll notice that even if while it was on it said it was full, the phone will continue to charge when you turn it off. it kinda recharges the battery to its full potential. Kinda small alternative to a batterystats.bin wipe
I charge overnight

I usually charge it overnight, but I also have two batteries, which I switch out if I forget to charge it or something.
Charge it whenever it gets low.
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
i put it on the charger when i go to bed, and then take it off when i get up. last all day. battery life with incredikernel/MIUI is awesome. very rarely do i need to charge before bedtime.
If I'm not going to be too far from a charger or if I know I won't be using my phone much, I typically wait till it gets below 40% and then charge up to 60-70% or so. This is the optimal approach to extend the life of your battery. I wish there was a way to configure the voltage or percent at which you want to stop charging.
If I'm going to be away from a charger for longer period of time, I'll charge until the LED goes green. If I'm going to be away from a charger for a really long time, I'll bump charge, but I try to limit the frequency with which I do this because it shortens the life of the battery.
I am using the 2150mAh extended battery by HTC and I have recently (the last 2 days) been powering down and letting it charge over night. Thankfully, I have my DX and multimedia dock to use as my alarm clock.

For anyone using Android 4.0, specifically running it as stock on this device, do you experience the same battery drain issues commonly seen in Gingerbread? You know the one where the process Android OS uses an ungodly amount of battery life through suspend and events/0?
been playing around with the phone for the past 8 hours from a full charge, nothing unusual about the battery

Does it take long to charge the battery? Like the nexus s. If its a slow charging phone like the nexus s then im not buying.
didn't think that fully charging it toke that much
i usually leave the phone charge when i go to sleep
removed from a 100% charge at 9:15am GMT
I own Nexus S too and experience the same, slow charging ... using the charger from Samsung (default).
So, I changed the charger and I use the one that came with the HTC Desire
And it is much faster, like 3 hours to go fully charged compared to more than 5 hours.
So, there you go, change your charger!

I can usually get my nexus S to a full charge in an hour or two, depending on how empty I let it get. It's fast enough that if I've forgot to charge & need to go out a 20 minute blast will get me through the evening.
No idea who made the charger.. I've got a house full of the damned things these days
So what about life time?
Just check your chargers mA output, the higher the nr, the faster the charge. A computer USB port outputs 500mA wich gives a rather slow charge normal mA on chargers is around 700mA -> 1A. Keep in mind though that higher mA resulting in a faster charge puts more stress on your battery and it WILL get hotter, to high numbers can even damage your battery so be carefull and monitor your batterys temp when trying a new charger!

Slightly off topic, but regarding charging...
Does charging via a "weaker" USB port damage the battery? For example, at work, the only USB port available is an old iMac keyboard USB port, and it's "weaker" in the sense that when I connect it to my phone, the computer tells me "A USB device needs more power.... "
I understand this might charge the battery slower, but does it cause any damage to it, short or long term?

As far as i know USB before 2.0 needed external power supply, meaning your device should not be able to charge from this type of USB. But to answer your question, no, you can not damage an electric device by undervoltage or lower Amps.

That's what I do as well but I don't think its the best way to charge the phone as sometimes I wake up in the middle if the night and the phone is close to exploding from the heat it generates while charging.
But as how fast it charges, I think around 2 hours for me too. USB takes a little longer, I'd say about 5-6 hours.

There's no need for it. The charger stops at 100% and goes into battery mode until 95%, then starts charging again. It never approaches overcharging at any point. This is also why sometimes when you unplug your phone, it drops a few percent almost immediately, cos 100% battery was already achieved some time ago, and has been on battery the last few %

hehe i know i orginally said that i was getting 2 hours(this was the first charge cycle of the phone )
but now it takes me 3 hours for a full charge this is after the 1.28 update
going to add here, go to settings and power and check the status if it says (charging - USB) then it will charge slow for me it's 20% an hour from a USB. I also have a charger cable (has plugs for iStuff, micro USB/ mini USB and that tiny one for Nokia) and when that it plugged in it says (charging - AC) and its a lot faster.
2.5-3 hours max
charger = 5v 1a
2.5 hours here
Thanks for the thread. It also takes mine just under 3 hours from completely dead and I was thinking that was on the long side. (My Atrix 4G used to take 2 hours.)
HTC One X/AT&T
Charge time from 5% is about 3h
Hello,
i own an htc one x and the charge time are usually around 3-4.5 hours. now granted many say their average charge time for this phone is about the same. but what bugs me is that i charge my phone with a 5v+/- 1 amp charger in a 110v 50hz socket.
i have an app that measures battery usage, charge times and the amount of mAh being used or stored @ a given time interval. now when i charge the phone through the 110v socket i get 386 mAh the max from the socket. where as at my school we use 220v sockets (i have both connectors for my phone) and i get easily 895 mAh reducing charge time to just over 2 hours. so my question is.
the specification on both chargers is:
+/- 5v 1amp
so even if there is a difference in sockets both still list 1amp. so why do i only get under 400(386)mAh at home and just under 900(895)mAh at school?
btw. noob. if im in the wrong section plz redirect me. only board that looks close to what i need
Anybody else having the issue (or perhaps it's normal?) where running the Google Navigation app on your Nitro absolutely KILLS the battery...Even if you have your Nitro connected to a high-output power connector?
On mine, running CM10.1 RC5, even plugged into a 1.0A car adapter, the battery drains at about 1% per minute! The area around the CPU is super hot so I imagine running Nav pushes the CPU quite a bit...But this seems excessive.
Any thoughts on workarounds, fixes or alternate Nav apps?
Thanks.

This is actually a fair question, as what is "normal" usage when it comes to using Navigation on our Nitro? Is the 1% per minute drain to be expected?

What IS normal is high current draw during battery use. What ISN'T normal is the battery drain when plugged in. Try a different cord or even a different vehicle. I have noticed that on some cars for me it won't charge at all, but won't drain, and on others it will charge slowly. I would suggest also making sure that the cord is rated for at least 2 amps. When I tried the stock cord and charger with a power inverter it would drain the battery with GPS use, just not as bad as you described. Also with screen off I get a drain of about 5%/hr with the navigation working. This has been consistent with stock or cm10.1 for me
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
it's actually decided by the wiring in the vehicle, and the adapter (which is either a car plug that has usb or a straight car plug -> micro usb)
i drive 3 differant vehicles at work and my car and have 3 differant adapters, i noticed that each adapter has differant charge speeds, and each vehicle does as well, my dollar store charger can't even keep up with navigation drain, a rapid charger will. however in my car i have 2 outlets, one in the center console and one in the dash, the center console outlet is more powerful than the dash.
so if u can't control your vehicle power buy a higher priced rapid charger.
if you really want good charge, buy an adapter that turns your car plug into a wall outlet plug, then plug the wall charger that came with your phone into it, that will probably be the max possible current you can get in any outlet, the higher quality the wall outlet converter the better.
if you notice you can charge your phone in a wall plug about 5x faster than a cheap car adapter plug
that is why they added a "slow charge" warning in some rom's to hint to people that it isn't the phone that is broken it's that there is a LOW current coming into the micro usb port.
there are also some kernels that will force a faster charge and remove some media transfer over usb capabilities, but i think that only works when plugged into PC (not sure)
I've noticed mine drain like this too. Nav annihilates my battery, if it's plugged in it still slowly drains. Maybe someone still running a stock ICS ROM can try it for comparison.
My old phone (HTC) also drained fast on nav, but plugging it in would result in a VERY slow charge instead of a slow drain.
The only time I experienced an actual drain when plugged in was while using the stock adapter on a power inverter. My car adapter plugs straight into the micro USB and us rated at 2A that is why I suggested a 2A adapter. Also to answer mpsantiago I experience no battery drain on stock ICS but on cm10.1 it actually charges faster. The only thing I can say is get a 2A adapter as the phone clearly draws more than the stock 1.2A adapter can deliver.

that's interesting... well i guess the moral of the story is just find a good charger, usually dollar store ones are garbage, also, use a widget like power toggles which has a multi setting brightness toggle, and turn your brightness low while your screen is staying on in navigation, my only suggestions. you could also try a new ROM or flashing firmware for gps hardware but i doubt that is worth the effort, if i use a cheap charger or use a bad outlet on an old work truck i have these problems with ANY ROM, but i don't have them using a good charger.
I love this phone and all, but it tends to have strange battery drain tendencies. As in, the screen isn't what drains the battery most, a lot of the time. :/
I happen to have the 6200 variant, if that makes any difference.
I had installed the yahoo weather app and went from 2 day on one charge to less then 8 hours on a charge. Some apps are a bastard on the battery..

Yes, Navigation kills battery. I too have it plugged into my car charger and while it slows the drain down, it can not charge it fast enough to keep up with Navigation's drain.
I'm running HO!NO!'s ATT V20f rom with the latest Wind Kernel. It's not just your phone. The Nitro gets hot and if you didn't have the car charger plugged in while running Navigation, your battery would easily be dead in about an hour.

You have to use a 2 amp charger with the navigation app with the screen on. As part of my job I am constantly using Google navigator. The cord I purchased was $40 and it charges fine, slowly but fine. To test this I borrowed a buddy's cheap charger that he bought at Walmart and sure enough I experienced battery drain, as it was only rated at 1 amp. The good news just hit the power button on the phone to turn off the screen. You will still get the voice guidance and your phone will charge or get a decent charger. BTW my charger has charged my phone no matter what ROM I used from Gingerbread to Jellybean.

good advice, but if you need the screen because of volume issues or you don't have a bluetooth stereo to make listening to audio easy, then you can just turn your brightness down as far as possible, i use power toggles for this its a widget with a brightness button that has up to 4 options, so you can push it and toggle through, mine is 10% 20% 30% 75% and there is a settings for auto, this is handy because depending on the sun at the time you want to be able to quickly swap between the lower brightness settings to find one suitable for seeing but that has minimal battery drain.
