Hi,
My wife just got the i747 model of the Galaxy S 3 not too long ago and I was helping her configure her contacts. Prior to getting the phone I saved all her contacts to her Google account so when she sets up her Google account on the S 3 it will automatically sync the contacts as well.
That worked without any problems, but when you go to contacts it displays all the contacts in her sim card and all the contacts from her Google account as well, so everything is showing double. How do I get the phone to only show the contacts from her Google account? I see that you can delete the sim card contacts, but I don't really want to delete them from the sim card, I just don't want them to show.
I own the T989 Galaxy S 2 and with the stock ROM you have the option in contact settings---contacts to display, you can choose which account you want to have the contacts "display" either just from your google, just from your sim, or a combo of the 2. I can't find that option on the S 3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
'Contacts to Display' is in the contact settings.. you have to scroll the menu down.

Hi, I have just got my desire and am very very impressed so far, however when I go into my contacts I see the ones I have synchronized from gmail and also my sim contacts.
Is there anyway I can stop the sim contacts showing in the app?
Thanks
Stewart
Wonder if this helps. Under Contacts there is a View option where you can set the sources. SIM is one of those and you can deselect that option to avoid any SIM entries.
Yeah that kinda helped! Now when i go to people the gmail only contacts appear, however when I go to phone dialer, my sim contacts are still appearing? Thanks, stu
I was annoyed by this too and the only workaround is to delete all contacts on the sim.
Desire couldnt do it and neither could the sim app I tried, so I put the sim on my old phone and deleted it from there.
Now I live happily ever after

I was able to delete the sim contacts using the desire. Long press on the contact, view contact, hit menu then delete. Job done. Might take you a while if you have alot to delete, but I didn't mind doing it one by one as I was also adding them to gmail as I went along.
I only had 60 sim contacts and even that would have been too much to go through one at a time for me - I am lazy

I have read some posts which mention that the phone dialer includes all contacts and therefore what is applicable to contacts is not applicable to dialer. I am afraid that deleting contacts is the way to go (for now), unless someone is aware of any other option.
Well I deleted the contacts from my sim, so only my Gmail contacts are showing now. However, it seems like the contacts are not actually stored to my phone, as it doesn't show any contacts being saved to the phone.
Is there anyway I can copy all the Gmail contacts to my phone?
All you have to do is select contacts to be sync'd under Accounts&sync>google>sync contacts and press the sync now button. Once you do that all your gmail contacts should be available on your phone.
Something that I thought should be simple but strangely (for Android) it's not.
If you get sent contact details in a vcard, it gets saved to the phone memory. I still can't see how to save that vcard info to my Google account.
Anyone got any ideas? A feature I've missed? An app? I use Handcent but that's a bit poo for vcards so I have to go back to the native Messages app to even view vcards.
Any ideas???
+1
I too need it, by far couldn't succeed that. It would be the best way to keep your contacts with details that sim cannot store.

This is the response I got from HTC when I asked for any method they know to get contacts from the phone to the Google account:
I would advise you to savbe the V-Card to your phones memory, so that it show in your contacts. Then in the People app, press Import/Export then Export to SD card. Choose the contact you wish to export. We have now exported a copy of that contact to the memory card. Now.. We are going to import it back into the phone as a Google contact, so, From the People main screen, press Menu, Import & Export, Import from SD card, choose as 'Google' contact. This will now have made that V-Card a Google contact. If you then Sync your phone to your Google account by going to Menu, Settings, Accounts & Sync, tap 'Sync All' this will send the new contact to your Google account. Then you will be able to see this new contact in your Google Mail - Contacts section.

The only problem I had with these instructions is that I found exporting contacts is all or nothing. You can't pick and choose. Luckily for me, all my contacts are on my Google account so it was only the one vcard sent by MMS that I wanted to transfer over.
HTH
I saved some of my contacts to the phone instead of google and would like to switch them around but can't figure out a way to. Saving them to google puts them in my contact list in Gmail which keeps them synced between Gmail and the phone.
I tried using the export/import option to export them to google but it only lets me export or import to the SD card. I've also went through every available option in the contacts menu settings and can't figure out a way to do it. Also have searched other threads on the subject and none of them have stated a way to do it.
Any help is appreciated.

Settings -> Accounts and Sync
Then set up your google account *AND* make sure it is selected for contacts
After you save the "phone" list to the sd card, go back and import them from the sd card. When importing, it will give you an option of "phone" or "google". If you save them as google you will have duplicates.

I exported the phone contacts then imported them as google contacts. Then all I had to do was link the duplicates together.
Looking to see if I can solve some issues with my phone without havign to do a fatcory reset,
1. At first the phone wasn't showing contacts from the sim card. So I imported them, but now it appears the phone is reading them as I have duplicates for a lot of the contacts. How do I delete the ones off my phone.
2. I have FB on my phone, but contacts unsynced. When ever I get a txt it comes through with their facebook account name and sometimes their picture. It even happens when they call me. How can I stop this from happening?
Basically how can I use only the contacts on my sim card? Don't want the phone using any others!
Thanks,
First install "go contacts" from market. In its menu options, you can batch delete all contacts. Do it. Then go to settings in your phone( before Google or Facebook sync the contacts again), then go to accounts and sync. You may see you online accounts there like gmail, facebook etc. Click on every account you have and untick sync contacts( if you want to avoid any others like sync Calender/ mail etc, you can untick it too) . Done fb or gmail will never sync contacts till you tick it again and do a sync.
Now go to contacts in your phone( if you are done with removing contacts, you can uninstall " go contacts". I do the same with it on my cm7 rom, as the stock contact application does not have a batch delete option . If you can find any other application which can do the same batch delete , u may use it insted of " go contacts ") now in contacts click menu and it have an import/ export option. Use it to copy contacts from sim to phone.
Remember to take a backup of all you contacts to SD card using the import/ export option. In case you may delete phone/ sim contacts. Pls note that phone contacts load much faster than sim contacts. So just copy it to phone memory. And use it.

simple.....!!
see first of all keep the facebook for android" app on internal memory...its important othewise you will have to sync every time after the boot...to sync all your fb contact with phone.or to have all your FB contact on your phone you just have to go to settings of the Facebook app...press menu on the primary facebook page..and then select settings and their you'll find an option to sync your contacts...just select "sync all"... an their you go....DONE!!
and yes dont forget to join your existing phone contacts or gmail contacts to your FB contacts it can be done by open the contact you want to join/link > select editing contacts from menu > now again go to menu and their you will see option to join. and in the edit menu u'll also find NICK NAME bar just fill your friends nick name their and it'll be shown in every call/msg to you...
anmol, thats how to sync FB contacts. I wanted to do the opposit.
So I deleted all contacts. Including sim card ones =[
How can I add a conact to sim card for the phone to view them? I can only see the option of my google account of phone only, unsynced.
I prefer to keep all my conacts on my sim card, if something happens to my phone atleast I have the sim card!
CM just seems one big pain after an other!
Remb you have an sd too, back up contacts to sd. I think default contact manager on cm7 have no option to copy contacts to sim.

Cm7 does have import/export contacts to SD, I had to do the wifes the other day.

Aye thanks guys, noticed that it didn't actually delete the contacts off my sim card. Sure I tried to import off sim, either phone was having a hissy fit or I was being an idiot.
Got it all sorted now though!
Hi there
The thing is whenever I add a new phone number to my contacts list they don't show up there. When saving the contacts I choose to save them to my Google account. So if my phone dies or is stolen I can recover all my contacts. The thing is they're not appearing on my contact list. Even tough I've selected in contacts to show: All contacts.
The only way to find them (since universal search was removed) is to use the dial to type the name (most of the time without luck) or go to the call log (if I called that number before).
I've come to think the contact IS on the phone, Cuz it appears in the log with the name I've given it.
I have account sync on, I've turned the phone off and on.
I've been experiencing this problem on different phones (HTC Inspire 4G and now on a GS3).
If anyone can help, thanks!

Adding this in case any one else is seeing the same issue:
Did you check if any of your sync accounts are failing to sync? In my case it was facebook sync so i removed FB from the list of accounts to sync with and the other contacts were restored. Mine is Galaxy S2 running ICS so YMMV.
Looks like a bug in Android is preventing it from showing contacts even if one of many sync accounts fail.
Contacts not showing on Android phone.

I had the same problem on my HTC One X. After some time I figured it out. Sign out of your Google mail account and resign in again. After a 'sync'
all my contacts magically appeared. I hope this helps.

This has been happening to me for a while now, and it was driving me insane!! I also save all my contacts to gmail account, yet all of them never show up, even with display all contacts. Sometimes, even doing a search in contacts would not find them, even though they were there!! Just now figured it out, and I am happy, happy, happy!! No need to sign out and sign back in. Just go into your contacts, hit the menu button to bring up settings, hit contacts to display, check 'customized list", now there should be a setting button beside that, hit that, go down to your gmail account and pick it, now u will see like 6 boxes, such as my contacts, starred in android, etc, all the way at the bottom check "all other contacts", save it and you're in business!! Hope this helps...

Unfortunately I don't have a 'contacts to display' or 'customise list' on my HTC One X, just 'Only with phone number' option but never mind
whatever works.
If there's a will, there's a way!
My suggestion : Go into CONTACTS. Hit the RIGHT OPTION (CONTACTS) Then the MENU button. Then ACCOUNTS. Tap on your GOOGLE account. In there you will have the SYNC options.
I just went through this because all of my contacts are not syncing. I have 95% of them for whatever reason.......

Try deleting your google account completely from your phone and re-adding it after a reboot.
This is driving me crazy too...
So,I've installed kitkat 4.4.2 on Friday and everything was really ok. Today I realized when someone is calling me on Viber, there are no contacts, the same is with WhatsApp.
And when I want to use my phone contacts, they are all gone. Then I need to copy the contacts from the sd card(cause there is no option to show contacts from sim card) and they showed up,when I click on Viber again, the contacts are gone again.
Anyone can help me with that???
