porting new number - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

I want to get a new phone and give my rooted s-off inc 2 to my son, I want to keep my number for the new phone and have a new number ported to the inc 2. Can and will Verizon port a new number to a rooted s-off device? Would it be more advisable to unroot and get s-on again before taking it to the Verizon store to have a new number ported? Thanks for your advice.

Yes they can and will. You don't even have to take it in. It can be done over the phone. If you do take it in then your warranty will be voided if you still have one.

Incredible 2 Preloaded with 2.3.3

I received an Inc 2 as a replacement phone and it came preloaded with the gingerbread ota.
I have researched various forums and have found some conflicting information. Mainly, this thread serves as a clarification for myself and those that also have gingerbread preinstalled.
1. Is it possible to downgrade to froyo in order to root when the phone comes preinstalled with gingerbread?
2. Is there currently a way, software wise, to root the 2.3.3 gingerbread update?
3. If the answer to the previous questions is no, is it ever going to be possible to install a custom rom and/or gain root access ?
Basically I am trying to decide if I should attempt to exchange it for an Inc2 with the old froyo software installed.
Thanks in advance.
I got lucky, I already replaced fascinate with dinc2 and got it today, however I had froyo on it.
1. no
2. no
3. Wait for an exploit or buy XTC clip.
No, you cannot downgrade to Froyo without rooting the phone.
No, there is no way to root the phone via software, YET.
Yes, it is likely that there will eventually be a software root for GB phones. It might be a while, because they just came out with froyo root a few weeks ago.
You could always get in on one of those XTC clip trading/group buy deals. I would just keep your phone for the time being, because honestly, there aren't any good ROM's yet. (this goes along with the fact that the phone just recently got rooted)
You're not really missing out on anything. My phone is rooted, and I am running the OTA debloated, not much different....
AT&T did that with My ARIA when I ordered it it was supposed to have 2.1 (Eclair) on it that was rootable, but by the time I got it they had released 2.2 (Froyo) and they shipped it that way.
I didn't have to wait very long before S-OFF was achieved though.
I imagine some Dev will stumble onto a way to S-OFF the latest OTA.
But If its the latest version I as far as I know you will need an XTC-Clip to get S-OFF.
I had miui on my fassy and miss it greatly
Oh well, it was worth a shot. Guess I can deal with stock for a while, if it becomes too unbearable I'll cough up the money for a clip.
haha you'll have the official MIUI with dinc2. check miui-us's post

Drooling over that currently haha
At least sense is better than touchwiz
I saw a few guys on here claim to be able to downgrade, but I don't know the truth to that statement. If I was in your position I would look into it, though.

From what I can gather, you can only downgrade if your phone was rooted and s-off applied before the gingerbread update. In the case of phones with the preinstalled gingerbread ota it is not possible. Again, I am basically guessing but I believe this to be the case.
If it's true that you can downgrade and root, please correct me immediately lol
I think you're right, if you're S-OFF you can restore back to froyo with an RUU, but the whole point of having S-OFF is to be able to flash unofficial firmware, so if you're already on gingerbread and S-ON you're out of luck for now.
Has anyone confirmed that the XTC clip works for S-OFF on gingerbread?

You're right there sent any 'food's roms there are 'great' roms. CM and MIUI are completely stable and considering the fact that software root was just released I would say that's a great sign of things to come. Plus we have some great sense 3.0 roms that are being worked on as we speak. Bottom line is if you want to harness the best of your phone's hardware you'll need s-off.
Software s-off is not yet possible but an xtc clip definitely works. It is a hardware unlock so it doesn't matter which rom you have installed as it does its process in hboot before the rom even loads. The reason software s-off for gb isn't possible yet is because the exploit alpharevx used is patched in gb. I'm sure they'll find a way sooner or later but patience is the key.
This post is not meant to demean anyone just putting nlmy thoughts out there. Oh and by the way this thread probably belongs in the general section

[POLL]Do you wait for S-Off or Unlock through htcdev.com?

I am in a dilemma with my one x, whether to wait until s-off is here or to unlock the mobile through htcdev.com!
But I am thinking about the warranty, I read that flashing the original RUU will revert the phone to the original state. I am from India, So I think I need the RUU with version 1.26.720.2
Please give me some suggestions!
I also very much want to know the answer to this.
Please vote your wish.
Can't resist to flash the latest custom roms, especially leedroid's

What's the difference? I unlocked on htcdev.com
When you unlock through htcdev.com there were some drawbacks regarding warranty. But when you unlock using s-off you can easily bring your mobile to factory state for warranty.
Can some one post how exactly we can claim for warranty when we unlock through htcdev.com?
I can't avoid all the features which will work only with rooting. So finally I had unlocked my mobile through htcdev.com
I'd say wait 1 week before you do it, perhaps next week there is already a way to do it ^^. (That warranty is lost forever, so I wouldn't do it impulsively).
Offtopic : you really have a giant signature OP ;-)!
I still waiting for S-Off. As if now I don't need rooted device since i'm enjoying the stock apps and stock ROM. Once i'm tired then I may unlocked.
Im awaiting s-off just for warranty reasons
Mod or Die
I'm torn. I need root to make several things work in Norway....
I am new with htc.i came from Samsung. I am just saying in samsung when u wanted to go back in original mode u just used official roms and boom u were in warranty. Isnt that the same with htc? i just used htcdev method to remove some craps from 3 network but i am sure i could go back to warranty using an RUU.
And as i spoke for RUU is there any topic gathering all the RUU's? Where can i found them?
Normally flash straight away but had it 3 weeks and still resiited so far waiting for s off

Just search the topic until you find a functional link.
personally I want S-OFF via htc dev. If they are going to try and void the warranty because the software is being messed with anyway why not give me full access.
i unlocked my phone but i got insurance from my carrier, so should i break it my phone might by accident get a knock out of my hand and over the viaduct lol
but I'm a lucky one and got a flawless HOX so i have no need to return it
It would've been nice to migrate app data from my desire HD to my HOX using titanium, but I guess that won't be possible.

As much as i get tempted to go through htcdev i'm going to hang on, especially now i got a 1.28 update through Three UK. There are some seriously clever devs here so i'm sure sooner or later an S-OFF will come.

What app data do you want to migrate? I only brought my SMS and Bookmarks across with me, using SMS BackupPro and Bookmarks to SD. Don't game a lot, so that was never important...
I am waiting for S-Off. I am actually really happy how my phone works in stock form and sometimes custom ROMs can have one little bug or another, so you are constantly flashing, chasing that perfect and stable ROM.
I will likely want to install custom soon, so if there is no S-Off by mid-year, maybe I'll just go with HTCDev.
I'm wanting S-Off rather than using HTCdev as from following the S-Off Dev thread in here the changing of CID to none rather than the stock HTC CID could hinder going S-Off in the future even with a relock. I also don't feel the need to go Custom ROMing while unbranded handsets are getting things updated by HTC.
I'll wait for a couple of weeks post Kernel source release then make my mind up.
Really difficult coming from.my ENG S-Off Desire HD though.

Ok, I have some questions regarding unlocking / rooting / flashing.

Ok, I have a shiny new HTC One M8 from EE in the UK. I am currently considering unlocking and custom ROM-ming my phone. I am not new to the unlocking and rom world, however, it has been a while since I have done anything with an HTC phone, the only HTC I have had was the original HTC Desire. My last 2 phones have been Nexus's, so I have been spoiled by the simplicity of unlocking and rooting.
So I have a few questions:
1. If I unlock via HTCdev, my Data partition will be formatted - yes? Will the Internal SDCard be wiped or will my photo's etc be preserved?
2. Are there any stock RUU's available if I need to go back to stock software for warranty purposes? (I know warranty is a grey area if I have used HTCdev). I currently have:
Android Version: 4.4.2,
HTC Sense 6.0,
Software Number 1.12.61.17,
HTC SDK API Level 6.17,
Kernel Version 3.4.0-g278eae8 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT,
Baseband version 1.14.2133156.UA13G_20.18f.4096.03L,
Build Number 1.1261.17 CL31414 release-keys
3. When an S-Off tool (inevitably) comes, will I be able to convert my device so it thinks that it is a standard non-carrier version? So I could stay stock and get the newest officially released software direct from HTC?
I hope these questions make sense?
Thanks
Stewart

1. Yes, so back anything up first
2. Not seen any yet so there's a risk regarding that bit - take a full Nandroid before flashing a new ROM
3. Yes
Thanks for the replies chaps!
So, next question, is there a easy way to back everything up without currently having root? I would normally use Titanium Backup, however, I don't currently have root on my M8!
I'm not actually 100% sure I am going to put a custom ROM on, I might just unlock, wait for S-Off then convert to standard WWE(?) and then get the official HTC Updates. Is it the CID that needs changed to make it stock?
I have a few same kind of questions... How Htc has been acting if you use Htcdev to unlock? Do they take your imei and void warranty automatically or is it safe to root M8 with htcdev? Or is it just better to wait and get the unlock and root some other way?
As I'm coming from S4 with Knox tripped I would like that this kind of thing not to reproduce itself.

It depends a little, but there are no horror stories of unlocked phones being automatically voided. If you stuffing around with custom software had CLEARLY destroyed the phone, and they could prove it,,, then maybe you would have an issue. Other than that, no problems. Many people have normal warranty claims with unlocked bootloaders.
M.
Thanks a lot. What about this S-off thing? Sorry for noob questions but my last Htc was stock Desire Z and Samsungs rooting has always been quite easy and simple.

I believe that when (if) S-Off comes, we will be able to get rid of the Red text on the boot screen and get rid of the "tampered" message on the HBOOT Screen. So it will be a lot easier to make your phone look like it has not been touched!
I could be wrong though!
I should have unlocked my loader before I configured my phone the way I like it....

Just to make sure... So at this point I cannot make the phone look full stock (possible warranty claims etc.), not until we have S-off? Just trying to be absolutely sure that I wont run into problems if I root the phone before I even try to get all my stuff moved to it and some defect appears before S-off possibility.

Just got my first htc in years. Question about my software that came with the phone.

First off I just wanna say I love this phone. Been with apple and samsung for years and I just got the M8 and love it!!. Ok so I'm familiar with rooting and recoveries coming from samsung phones. So my question here is what are my options regarding root, recovery, boot loader unlocking and s-off? Software out of the box is 1.57.531.7. Baseband is 1.16.21331931. I just wanna know for future reference. I'm ok with stock sence, it amazing especially compared to touch wiz!!. I want to get used to sence before doing anything to the phone.
Edit: Disregard my sig. I just jumped ship to tmobile with the htc one m8.
