Just want to know what are the benefits if rooting it, is it free books and magazines or is it just for a ROM, thanks

main benefit to me was access to the google play store. I rooted and flashed CM9 last night. Runs way smoother and nicer than Kindle OS.

cheers mate, one thing,I have a pen drive with 11,000 books on it, can I transfer a lot of these on it, thanks:thumbup:

You will probably be able to read them with an up from the appstore.
I recommend rooting it.
You can make your Kindle look like this:

I rooted my kindle to get rid of the ads.. ICS is waaaaaaaaaaaay better than stock... stock just sucks lol
Just "rooting" the Kindle is basically worthless IMO, but you can "rom" (modify) it and turn it into a full fledged Android tablet or potentially port another OS like Linux.
Rooting alone only gives you ownership over system files you normally wouldn't otherwise, giving you the ability to make small customizations to the UI as in changing wallpapers and such.
If all you want is an e-reader and nothing else, going through all the trouble of voiding your warranty and possibly (although unlikely) ruining your device for simple customizations, is pointless. Most people here buy the Kindle Fire because of its ability to run Android ICS and the like, inexpensively and rather effectively.
Hope that helps
thanks for all the replies but i think im just going to get the nexus 7:good:

There's a pretty high demand for low dpi and tablet ui, I think cm should work on it as an option that would work natively

Can you use this with themes like Purple Kush (which is the cat's pajamas, btw!)? I'm also running a nightly, are they still compatible?

Sure. When I was using the tab mod, most themes worked flawlessly.

Haha, I saw this started a few days ago and decided not to start on the burn wagon. I love the responses of those who did and by those who did it.
There is one theme that I know doesn't work on the tablet. That's the Crimson Cobalt for CM9 and AOKP...that one will send all kinds of crap spinning.
Anyone know the earliest date we can manually upgrade to JB?

rightttttttttt.. so you think if someone wants a WebOS phone they should go back to 5 year old hardware..
anyways if webos had a decent market I would switch to a webos rom.. The problem is they don't.. Otherwise the OS is great..
Instead of putting web os
Why don't you guys that want it start by writing the apps for android and just out it on top of modified aosp

it has desktop like multitasking, it is also a gorgeous OS. Since google sniped webOS's designer, google has stepped up their own UI. At this point i would say the advantage is simply the multitasking. Google has pretty much borrowed all the great ideas webOS had like swiping notifications and swiping apps to close. WebOS always had performance issues likely due to bad hardware and the robust multitasking. A phone with 2 gb of ram and a chip like ours should power it nicely though.
I know this forum is pretty dead but does anyone have any plans on trying to bring Android 4.4 to this device?
One of the features Google highlighted when they released 4.4 was the ability to run on devices with 512 MB of RAM, which the original Kindle Fire has.
Look at this

I'm sure you'll see Hashcode release something when he gets a chance. Dude supports a lot of different devices, so it'll take time, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4.4 release from him by Christmas.
And 512MB support isn't anything new. Hashcode got that working on the Fire a long time ago.
EDIT: Hashcode posted this earlier too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47709839&postcount=2798

I can't find an official CM11 thread. I have been on the recent nighties and things have been awesome. Not a single bug that I am aware of and great battery life.
Keep in mind today was a very light usage day but I haven't seen figures like this in a very long time.

I second swordrune, I'm running his rom now and its running great.
nerds, how much keep awake time is google play using on yours? I had an issue where play was killing me basically staying on all the time. I reflashed everything and it seems to be better but I didnt enable ART this time. Don't know if that caused the issue or not.
It's kind of a shame cause some of us use XDA as a list of ROMs avaliable. I was very late to try PA2 cause there wasnt a thread in the dev section.
