WiFi Tether - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am not a noob but I am totally stumped. I have an Evo 4g rooted with CM7 and I cant tether.I have never had this issue. I have always been able to terther yet on my boost design and sprint evo I cant. It connects and everything as normal but just says no internet access and I am stuck.
My set up on CM7 is the wifi tether 3.1 beta 14
Device Profile Evo 4g and routing fix which has never failed. I have done the same setup on numerous evos and it always works flawlessly with the built in hack and or the app for rooted users. I am completely stumped and have tried unistalling. Using 4 different apps and nothing. Regardless the nuilt in hack should work yet it doesnt. Is there anyone else with this issue? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks alot for your time.

I have had this problem and I changed my kernal and it worked then.

What kernel did you change to that worked?

+1 I havent changed the kernel myself. I have to wait. But I too also would like to know what kernel c.robb used.

I did a little testing. My ROM is SensuASOP 1.1. The kernels I've tried are Mason-G 0.15r4, 0.14, and Tiamat 4.1. On all of them my laptop will connect, but not get an IP. I would love to stay on an AOSP ROM, but I'm gonna have to reflash to Sense just so tethering works.

It always has worked for me on a Sense ROM, just not on AOSP; CM7, Deck's Reloaded, etc. I use tethering regularly at work, so I switched over to the Shooter Sense 3.0 ROM last night and updated the kernel to Underground 0.8. No problems with tethering there.
On AOSP, my devices will connect to the wifi but not get a DHCP address. Dummy me forgot to test using a static IP before I reflashed.

FIXED!!
I found out how to get Wifi Tether working on an AOSP ROM!
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=974&q=no IP address
Use the NexusOne Device-Profile, and the netd (master) Setup-Method. Tested and working on my Evo running Deck's Reloaded. :good:

Wireless Tether App

I have recently installed SkyRaider 3.0 Vanilla on my phone, and I had read somewhere that the Wireless Tether application will still work, even though the stock 3G Hotspot does not.
I can start it up, and turn the tethering on, but I can't connect to it to anything..

It's working great for me on uncommon sense. You'll probably get a better answer if you post in the skyraider thread.

What problem is there with the 3G Wireless Hotspot?
Og, I'm not using the same rom a you but I use hydrakernel v0.5.
This may help? Do a nandroid...
If your rom is based on cm6, then don't use my kernel, per the warning on hydrakernel.net
Try using the latest version from the developer's code site instead of the one from the marketplace.

wireless tether not working

Im on the latest SPRINT LOVER ROM and using the latest WIRLESS TETHER APP. When I try to connect from any client, the evo does not show a notification that someone has connected and the client machine does not get an ip address. does anyone know why??
Thanks ...
Your EVO should vibrate when a client device tethers to it and when connected, the client should have an IP address.

Nope not working.. I have now tried my Laptop and an IPOD TOUCH.. neither work.. the network is shown and I can connect, but I dont get any notification on the phone and the laptop or IPOD do not get an IP ADDRESS....
BTW - Im running 2.0.8-PRE1 version of wifi tether on the evo4g. Also I notice that when I use the free wifi tether app and I start it up, I see 2 icons in the notification bar.. one of them is from the SPRINT HOTSPOT and says "0 users connected" .. Is that normal?
I've used the wireless tether app hundreds of times without issue, however, for some reason, I am unable to connect. Hopefully, it is because I'm using SalvageMod 1.2.1 AOSP Gingerbread rom. Normally, I use either Myn's RLS 5 or a rooted Stock ODEXED rom. I'm going to flash to one of the two momentarily and test it out again.

I have been using the wifi tether for months fine.. I had to reset my phone and install the latest sprint lovers ROM and thats when it started NOT working. I just uninstalled the WIFO TETHER I had installed and install the new 3.0 pre1 and STILL the same issue.. I can get my laptop to connect but no ip address and no notification on the EVO
Well, I flashed the stock rom and just finished tethering my MacBook to my EVO and it worked as it should. I'm not sure what the problem is with it not working with the "outstanding" SalvageMod 1.2.1 rom. I'm going to have to look into it. I can't understand why it is not working for you with the Sprint Lovers rom being that it is basically a rooted & deodexed stock rom. Have youvtried unistallung and reinstalling IR installing a previous version of the wireless tether app that you may have backed up somewhere?

Which version of the app did you use that worked?? Also Im not running the kernel that comes with the SPRINT LOVERS ROM. Im running a custom kernel for battery life....
UPDATE: EVEN the sprint mobile hotspot (which the sprint lovers rom has unlocked for 3G) doesnt work either.. I can connect but cant get an IP and no notification that I am connected to the phone
I'm using Wireless Tether version 2.0.7. Change kernels and see what happens. Try Netarchy 4.3.2 noHAvs noSBC noUV.

Does the kernel have anything to do with this??
If kernels can effect camera and video, and believe me, they can, then it is possible for them to have an effect, to some degree, on wireless performance. Of course, I have no proof, but I've been flashing long enough to know that it's possible.

I would completly uninstall wireless tether, I had a simikar problem, after upgrading versions, I then installed older version and it worksfine, I am running ver 2.05 rc 2, and newest netarchy kernel, on stock odex 3.7 rom

As i stated earlier, I nandroided back to the stock ODEXED rom and Wireless Tether v2.0.7 worked well with it. It did not initially work with SalvageMod 1.2.1, but I chalk that up to user error. There is a setting for wireless tethering that I was unaware of at the time. Anyway, I can't understand why the app wont work with the OP's Sprint Lovers rom which is basically a deodexed version of the stock rom, but Barnacle's wireless tether app works well for him.

It only works in adhoc mode.
Download and ODIN this file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415
Then download and ODIN this kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305099
And finally use CWM to flash this file and then wipe your Dalvik cache in the advanced menu of CWM

Worked like a charm for me and is many more times reliable than Wireless Tether.

try it without encryption just use access control you have to authorize each device from the phone once but it at least keeps people from using your bandwidth.
it is adhoc only though so some devices can't connect (mainly other phones tablets ect computers and the like are ok)
im currently on starburst 1.95 with the included kernel but i've yet to find a rom it didnt work on for me anyway
that sprint hack would be awesome if it had 4g enabled also
Thanks guys. I didn't know Adhoc wouldn't show up on my android and blackberry, the two devices I was testing to see if it would catch my SSID. Fired up my laptop and there it was. Sucks there's no infrastructure mode at the moment and hope they can fix that soon.
install the sprint hack from the dev section for those times you need infrastructure mode.
its only 3g but better than nothing.
Not sure what is the problem, im on stock rooted with LosKernel, and im able to ot use the latest Wireless Teather, with 4G on.. I connected my ipodtouch3G to check if it works, and it does
what are this ad-hoc and infrastructure stuff?

But does 4G stay on? Every kind of tethering I've tried, wireless, hotspot, wired, 4G acts like it is authenticating, then disconnects. So you are really tetherd on 3G.

Wireless Tether with any ICS Rom .....

Just wanted to let you guys know that if you want to wireless tether with any ICS rom just install wireless tether beta 11. Go into settings and change device profile to "Samsung Galaxy Nexus CDMA" and voila you have infrastructure tether with 4g!

Do the GPS fix mentioned in the threads. You have to go back to the EL 29 ROM and get a GPS lock with maps. Then immediately go to recovery and nand restore your ICS ROM or just flash an ICS ROM and I promise you will get a lock. Sometimes it won't lock but if you turn off GPS and turn it back on it well lock immediately. It's like the wifi issue where I have to turn wifi off then back on in order for it to reconnect to a saved wifi connection. This sort of sucks but it's a reliable temporary fix.

of course i enabled the wifi encryption and created a password. for a secure dedicated connection

Wi-Fi tether on 4.2.1?

Im currently using this ROM and native wifi tether works perfectly fine. I should add that I'm on R6, 4.2( R8 is the current one which is 4.2.1) as I've had no need to update it.
Ok..as soon as I can find a R6 ROM I will give that a shot and see what gives... My laptop connects but it says "limited connectivity" ... basically no internet...
Would the kernel make a difference? If I ran a 4.2 kernel?
Works with the Paranoid Android ROM and Franco Kernel as well.
Damn...PA is a R8 release? What the hell is wrong with mine then..LOL

I'm using rasbean and with trinity kernel. And I can't get it to work either. Using wifi tether it gives me errors and won't show the created network. It has errors in the log creating "ap". If I try to use the builtin app it creates an "ap" and allows me to connect, but it won't actually let me to browse the Internet. This is over two rasbean roms and the stock kernel and trinity kernel. I've tried changing the device to the gsm version and I have also tried using different apps. Open garden, barnacle, etc. So I do know what else to do.
Thanks ...

I would first try flashing it clean. Wipe System/Data and Factory reset. Then before installing anything test the Native tether to see if it works. I suggest using Cyanogenmod because many ROMs are built off of it, but that is your choice. I also suggest you try connecting another device to the AP to make sure the problem is not your actual laptop. Try tethering a tablet or another phone and see if it works.
