Stereo audio recording - Is it possible? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I believe our phone has 2 microphones on the top and bottom of the phone, so what's stopping us from recording stereo audio? Is it something samsung just left out, or is there a hardware limitation?
Could this possibly be added with a software mod?

Agreed. Why is this getting no attention? I've spent over an hour researching this and found countless mentions of the international S3 recording stereo audio when recording video. I have tried numerous apps and tested every factory option to get stereo recording and nothing works. I've also read that the other mic is for noise reduction. So what's the deal? Can anyone shed any light on this?

Could it be because of different processor and audio chips?

Just did some more tests. The mic on the top of the phone acts as the mic for both front and rear camera video. When using the stock record audio app the bottom mic is used. Clearly both mics can be used. I guess we'll just have to wait for someone to make a stereo record app since it's clearly possible.

So do any of the xda devs that we all love so dearly want to take a crack at this? Recording audio in stereo would just be tits! Sorry, couldn't help myself!

Samsung Galaxy records sstereo to Video and audio apps can too
I am not a developer but i hope this helps.
When I record a video with the phone held horizontally (the top mic is right and the bottom mic is left. I was so surprised the first time I heard something that had depth. But I couldnt dupllicate it using the Vmemo or any of the other apps. I got kucky one day when recording video with headphones in. The instant play revealed a stereo audio recording when video recording. AWESOME.....
PART II
There is an aoo called Recforge that allows the user to set the device (Mine is Samsung Galaxy S3) to record .wav or .ogg or .mp3. (First app I've seen that recognizes and manipulates .wav files), The user can set the sample rate up to 48kHz. And lastly, The recording can be switched to Stereo (Native) mode. It works great !!!!!
Hope this is helpful. Perhaps one of you is the developer for RecForge.
I love the app. I am a musician and I hate mono recordings done with AGC.(Yes RecForge let's you turn that crap off too)
Good luck.

In CM stereo work fine, problem in stock ROM only

Unfortunately, RecForge doesn't record mp3 or whatever compressed format on-the-fly. Instead, you have to wait at the end of every recording while the phone converts the file to the compressed format you want. That's very inconvenient. Recently, I tried Hi-Q mp3 dictaphone, but this one records in mono only, and the newest version is limited to ridiculous 4 seconds of compressed recording. According to the fact being so unlucky to find a suitable app anywhere, here my 'wishlist':
-recording of compressed audio on-the-fly with at least 128kbit/s bitrate and 44.1kHz sample rate, no recompressing at the end of recordings
-recording in stereo
-display for input sound level would be nice (e.g. vu-meter)
-small app
-free, if possible
Zoli

any news?

If a dev could please have some input on this, it would be much appreciated. I'm curious about this too. I'm using a custom rom(GalaxySfre3) and it also has this problem. I recently made the observation of the 2 mics. Both useable, but not simultaneously. I might try CM, don't know if that guy is saying stereo recording works or if just recording works on it. If anyone has the time to check and confirm if other roms support it, I'd appreciate it!

So your suggesting it isn't anything to do with ROM compatibility, and in order for it to work, there's things xda has prohibited discussion that are necessary. I honestly don't have a clue for what it is, but if a moderator could just confirm if this is true then I don't think anyone would persist with this. Including myself, although I'm positive it could just be a kernal tweak that gets it working. I don't know much about tweaking the kernal so I'd rather leave it up to someone who knows what they're doing.

RecForge records in mp3 on the fly too. The free version pauses recording (in mp3 and ogg not wav) every 3 min which can be resumed.
May be at the time of your writing this feature was not available.

RecForge does record in stereo mode. It records in mp3/wav/ogg and is perhaps most feature rich audio recorder for Android. The free version pauses mp3 and ogg format recording every 3 min which can be resumed. So either one can buy paid version or record in wav and later convert to mp3.
Another app capable of stereo recording is Easy Voice Recorder Pro (Paid version only, free version does not). But it is more costly than RecForge and have less features too.

For the stereo recording, I tried to improve options and features in RecForge II
It's in beta for the moment, but I think we're almost in a stable release. You can get it here : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dje073.android.modernrecforge
To record in stereo, you will have to :
- Select "Audio Record -> Stereo (native)"
- Select the “Source -> Front microphone”
- No disabling of the AGC”
PS : this may not be visible in preview mod waveform, but it should work in recording mod
It doesn't work on all devices, I tried to establish a list of working devices here : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58769997/RecForgeII/html/faq.html (page in construction).
If you have more informations so I can fill this page, thanks in advance.

Damn audio, totally ruins the recording/video experience with this phone...
It still is a great improvement, now I can just make a video, start AllShare and immidiately see the result on the big screen using my PS3. I always thought it was a shame to use this stupid 3GP container so I have to remux all the videos on my PC.
As for the sound: does the phone record from headset if connected? If yes, I guess this could be exploited to use a better microphone. The inbuilt one is meant for the phone function, obviously, and they just didn't add another for noise cancellation and video recording.

Fantastic. Now all we need is touch-to-focus in video mode.
another nice thing would be to be able to change the recording sound volume or some thingy that corrects its selve when you record loud things.

It is possible to record from headset but sound is still crappy. It's software problem.
The problem is with the mic itself, it is very sensitive, it would be great if there was an app that could monitor the input level of the mic and adjust de volume when its lower or higher than a certain threshold level, if not automatic at least manually.
Some kind of mic equalizer?
my bad it was always aac audio and not amr. by mistake i compared with old nexus video lol. only wrapper changed to mp4.

Audior-Video recording,poor sound,very very bad sound...

I've got my HTC a month ago,Europe version,Grey. No issues at all hardware or software,i stil can't belive the build issues people complain to One x.Maybe i got a good build.Everything works smooth, all in all perfect 5 but!!!I love my phone!Whenever i record video or audio,no matter what quality or resolution,if there is background music, something like pop, electro something a bit bassy and rich sound, the sound is all mesed up.Its not even, its high pitched, its highs are all right, but mids and low are garbage. Its frustrating to delete video just for the sound, could there be a fix in the update,is it only my device, what can i do to fix it,or should i give it back.It is very frustrating, video quality is epic, but audio recording is crap, glitchy, cracky.Even my Desire S has better audio recording.I tought it's that crapy speakerphone, but it isn't.This doesn't change if i open it from another device like my PC.Please help me iam at my wits end with this...
Facing the same issue!
Whenever I make video recording some thing on a houseparty it seems like it tries to balance the sound somehow,.. on my computer it sounds like 8 kbit quality or somethig
yeah I got that too, just tried recording my sons band and the sound is awful
I had the same issue when I enabled stereo recording in the camera app.
The only resolution was to disable the setting.

I too have noticed the same problem, video I took at a wedding was terrible. I am wondering if it is because generally when taking a video my hand seems to cover the microphone hole at the bottom, will need to take some more videos to verify.
Same here, overly compressed and squashed sound that doesn't make sense in a few videos.
I wish there was some way to get rid of all the Beats Audio and audio output files and replace them with the galaxy or sony xperia ones, unless it is a hardware compressor in which case it is a total design failure.

I dont think its covering the mic with the hand. I took care not too, using 2 different one x's and they were both the same. I have turned off the stereo recording now and will try again next time
Also, there's an option to enhance sound when you play videos through the gallery app. This has made things sounds strange for me too.

i'm on stock and have now tried just about everything possible to get reasonable sound recording in a party (music and talking and glasses etc) setting and its just not possible.
It's the built in noise cancellation feature during video recording that is doing this. No way around it AFAIK.
The same problem was in the HTC sensation. Still not forgiven HTC about that as they boasted stereo sound recording. HTC desire had similar poor recording but that got sorted in an update. Here's a thing to try. What happens when you use voice recording? Is the sound still poor? Gonna try now.

[Q] Audio quality on video recording?

To those of you who have the Note 2 in your hands already, I'm curious what your thoughts are on the mic quality. When recording video, how is the audio? Specifically, imagine recording vid of a live band in a club room.... Is it as bad as previous Samsung mics? Does the Note 2 happen to have built in mic sensitivity settings? Or does it look like it'll require another root/voodoo type setup.
Thanks

Bump.
I haven't been anywhere with live/loud music to record (and I imagine others haven't either, hence the lack of responses) but in general usage it seems a little loud so I'm not sure how well it will do with loud music.
For example here's a video I took recently http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDb9mE5cpNY (friend gets a bit loud at 1:50)
However I'm not sure if this is a result of the volume mod in this thread or not as I haven't recorded any videos without it.
Ok thanks,
Seems like a very sensitive mic in this video. I was hoping stock would offer more settings for mic control by now. A little surprised this thread isn't getting much traffic.
Voodoo sound is the perfect fix for my current dev. I guess I'll see if that is or will be an option for note2
Here's another video playing music on my really old, ****ty speakers at max volume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXGOhIz_7eQ
It did a lot better than I expected, coming from my sgs2 (that mic would distort if you looked at it funny)

best audio recorder

Hi. What is the best way to record audio at concert?
Default Audio recording android app is bad, but audio using video recording is much better.
Is there some audio recorder app in store that give better quality for audio recording?
Thanks
I use smart voice recorder it does real good with music in my opinion
I found the default app (LG?) much too loud (very high gain).

You can try Secret Voice Recorder. Apart from providing you the best quality voice recording, the app lets you start and stop voice recording simply by pressing the power button 3 times within 1.5 seconds. The power button gesture will work even if your mobile is locked.
I am the developer of the application. If you got any suggestion or feedback, let me know. I will look into it and fix it.
I suggest you to try Apowersoft audio recorder software where you can record your voices, record from music streaming sites and more. You can also save audio in high quality and get deal on the product from dpcoupon.com

I too am experiencing this issue. Not sure if a fix currently exists. On another note, when I purchased this phone i was hoping for more development support! It may still be early, but not too impressed so far!!
I also just got bitten by this crappy audio when recording videos. It absolutely sucks! Will using a different camera app fix it?

I dont think so as I am already using cam mod.
There must be some audio postprocessing going on. When I record audio with an app (Easy voice recoreder) and choose microphone "Main (unprocessed)" the sound is good. If I choose just microphone "Main" the recording is very bad (the same distorted sound I get in video recordings). So the phone can record good audio. The question is how to record unprocessed sound in video.
The bitrate is 96kbps with no way to change.

soo.... to answer to myself it does not work, the audio quality is still 96kbps, I had an idea to record audio separately.
if you start recording only audio with an app like "easy audio recorder" and then you go to the video app and record. the recording audio app won't stop recording its quality is gonna change to 96kbps (bad)
EDIT: yeah, it sucks, only xiaomi can fix it.
I have found a trick to record good audio see my post below.
