I am curious to know what fellow Sprint users are using for text messaging. Have you merged your number with Google Voice or have you continued to keep your numbers separate? I've thought of merging my number with Google Voice so that I can text online, but the thought of not being able to text pictures and having to keep data enabled to send and receive texts doesn't appeal to me.

Enabled Google voice mail, but did not integrate. I use the default app on the stock ROM. Like you, I am not hip on losing the MMS.
I integrated my number and use handcent. Mms works fine on phone, I just can not see it in web

I may integrate now that I know this. Thanks! It was my understanding that you had to use the Google Voice app to send and receive texts. I didn't know you could send texts/MMS via the stock app.

I integrated at first, but I really need to keep my 2 separate number so decided to break integration and keep both numbers separated.

Looking for a sms/mms messaging app that uses my data plan instead of my text plan. Search with no luck. Anyone got anything......
That would just be email right?
Otherwise, SMS is always going to come in/send out via your text plan
I guess that would fall into email. Guess I'm looking for more of a chat based app. comes down to i would like to send and recieve messages with out a number trace.

Kik messenger... similar to BBM....
The problem with most apps that say they are SMS replacements that use your data plan is that they are actually some type of IM program which would require the person you are trying to reach be using it as well.
I'd recommend Google Voice as it would be using the data plan on your end, but be sending a true SMS so the recipient sees it as an SMS. If they want to pay for a text messaging plan, that's their choice.
Certain IM clients like Yahoo IM can send SMS messages, but I don't think it's as clean, it's just easier for the recipient when they see a SMS coming from an actual phone number.
In any case, you'd end up having problems if you like to send pics via MMS. Google Voice does not support MMS (people have been requesting it for a while, I only hope it's on their roadmap).
Did'nt Go sms have this as a paid option?
Get Textfree...when u make account, it gives you number that shows up when u text somebody, and it uses data...I used it a lot on my ipod touch, not so much on my dinc, but still does the job

Live profile. It is supposed to work like blackberry messenger but you can use it cross platform (android, iPhone, BB). Downside is that tonuse it, both you and the person you are trying to reach need to have it installed.

You can text with google voice. Its what I use and I'm about to drop texting off my plan. It uses data. Google voice ftw.
Google talk!

Another one here for Google voice. I have about a years worth of messages archived too
I have to admit I went to the dark side for a while and the only thing I miss is imessage. I wish I could find a cross platform app to send all my SMS through that would try to use data connection app first but then drop down and send an SMS if the other person did not have the same app. Anyone know of an app like this? It would need to work between iOS and Android.

Could what's app replace the native SMS app so that if the receiving party does not have whatsapp it will send a SMS from your phone number?

Well, if the receiving party do not have whatsapp, they won't appear in whatsapp's contact list
Here's a quick list:
Viber
Whatsapp
GoSMS Chat
The closest thing you can get to your concern is probably GoSMS Chat. Though if iOS has GoChat, I can't really tell. Viber has both iOS and Android versions, so you can use that too.
I feel you man, I was always on a Android, then decided to switch to iOS just to check it out, got hooked with iMessage but I just can't live with the closed OS of Apple. So I got a GNex and never looked back
My friends and I just use Google+ Messenger app. Half of my friends have iPhones and other hand Android. We just use G+ to group chat. Works great.

Google voice sends an SMS via data. Not exactly what you wrote looking for but close.

So Im having an odd group MMS issue with my GS4, I have a group message thread that my family and I use all day every day to communicate, 3 of the 4 have iPhones, and one has a GS3. Everything works perfectly with the people using iPhones, but with the one GS3, I always get her replies in a separate thread. This didnt happen on my HTC One using Sense, but did with the Google Edition ROM, and on happens both on touchwiz and the Google Edition ROM for the GS4. Any ideas?
Anyone?
Sent from my GT-I9505G using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I have the same issue. No one was able to answer it. The person having problems in mine had a note 2. Maybe a Samsung problem?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
I didn't have an S3, but on my S2 when replying to group messages it would send out individual SMSes instead of as an MMS. Default behavior on the stock messaging app. They might try a different client like gosms, or maybe facebook messenger and tie in sms/mms functionality to that.
Or do the iPhones see the S3's response as a group message as well?
The other people see the iPhone as a normal group text.
Go sms does work... But it's got an annoying double notification for group messages. Hmm.. Strange..
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
Could be because the S3 doesn't have native group messaging. You could try installing one of the AOSP messaging mods with group messaging on that device and see if it clears it up if the phone is rooted.

Thanks for the thought. Hopefully helps out the other poster. Still doesn't explain my issue with the person with the note 2 tho

Yeah.

I'm pretty sure the S3 didn't have native group messaging. If i recall correctly, I would get a different thread for each person responding to the group sms. And that's why I love my S4.

I have the latest available version of hangouts and it has been said we can start using the SMS integration. I don't see that option anywhere in the app.

I'm sticking with Sammy's SMS for now
I like Hangout for Video, and such but for SMS it to me gets mixed up with all the other hangout stuff and I would rather have it separate. For me, I use SMS/MMS WAY more then Hangout, and it's just cleaner to keep it in it's own app. I did try it, worked fine and all. Just like SMS/MMS to be stand along.

I'm the opposite. I use SMS as an alert and rarely use it with other people. I use hangout text all the time. Don't do video much. I'd keep the SMS out of hangout as I prefer it separate.

MMS works between google+ accounts, but not between mobile numbers - Hangouts will force-close whenever I attach a photo to a message going to a phone # (as opposed to a hangout contact).
I got mine to work but I noticed when wifi calling dont work but works when on 4g I also downloaded one inverted from darkhorse is the one im using

Seems like if you are in a group message to people on their phones numbers then the messages will go as MMS instead of SMS, When i am connected to WIFI mms does not work hence i have to choose WIFI or group message and i hate it
But I was wondering if anyone with more experience in android could help.
I installed an xposed module that unlocks the "default SMS" options in settings and in other texting apps like hangouts. Now I used the cyanogenmod voice+ app and linked my google voice, then I went to hangouts and got it to import my existing texts and that worked.
Now this is where it gets weird and I need some help lol its pretty glitchy. I actually receive texts fine, but I was able to send one text perfectly and now I can't send anymore.
If anyone wants to work on this please go ahead
