Rooting while running ics stock - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I got the ics update a few weeks back and its ****. I want to root but cant find a definite source/method to root running 4.0.4. Someone have a link??:good:

Rooting isn't going to make it any better, you may want to consider going back to gingerbread.
Gb is stable with good battery life and can even look better than ics with a theme.

Bump. A buddy of mine would like me to root his phone, but I havent been able to find any diffinitive answers on rooting ics. My father in law just got this phone as well so I'll probably root his too.

Ics for epic touch

Hey I was wonderin will there be a update for the epic to go to ics?? And does the epic run off gingerbread? ?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes. Epic Touch runs Gingerbread 2.3.4. As for ICS, there is no official word and most likely will not be one very quickly. However, it is highly probable that an official version will come but if not there will certainly be one released here.

Yes it means you will have to root to get it
Don't know. Considering there are many top notch phones, including the original epic still running froyo, nothing is for certain. Buy a phone for what it has now, without any expectations for the future, or you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Maybe we should start nagging Samsung John lol
It will come out for this phone. Its samsungs flag ship device.it may be mid 2012 but this phone will get a OTA and I'm sure once its released from google as vannilla for other S2's it will be ported much before the OTA. But like a guy that posted a few posts back. Are device is great and ejoy it for what amazing tech it is and when ICS is released ( which I don't even doubt it will be ) just take it as a bonus.
Ya I just hope ya know cuz im not really wanting to root my phone
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I doubt it
Samsung's business strategy seems like new rom with new phone only so far. They have to make money for spending so much on their R&D and I think they make it this way. I will not expect it from Samsung, but yes Devs here are awesome and they will bring it.
Should I really root my phone tho like what are the pluses for rooting this phone

Look for the EL29 restore thread. After the restore instructions are instructions and a link for the EL29 kernel repacked with CWM. Sorry xda app is fc'ng when I try to copy the link. Stay away from ROM manager and CWM touch recovery. If you're going to flash cm9 make sure you flash cm7 from Rootzwiki first to get the original CWM recovery.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Also, if coming back from ICS to GB use sfhub's EL29 restore method. It's the safest way to revert and you can restore a GB nandroid once you reinstall the repacked EL29 kernel.

Any other suggestions?

Lol, I still miss my GB Juggernaut ROM. All the AOKP goodness in an ultra stable package. The ICS ROMS are still... well, too varied and not every single one has all the features. I'd like AOKP features in a WiFi-calling enabled ROM...... == Juggernaut GB

Honestly don't let the ICS and JB goodness sway you... the new ROMs still have little issues here and there... GB was _AWESOME_

Former Evo owner here myself and must say this is a hell of a phone with a great set of roms. Now not as much choices as we had back in the day with the Evo but good roms none-the-less. I would do yourself a favor and really not read into too much of the user reviews here. I see a lot of user error and just terrible flashing habits and a lot of complaining about issues with roms that quite frankly are created by the users bad flashing habits.
You had some good suggestions in here and great choice of stable roms like tdjs rom jamison904 rom
CM9 or AOKP

I see an update in the Playstore, but I'm not willing to risk it at this point. @ Playaa thanks I'll weigh those options along with the other ROM that was suggested to me.
By the way, I read that in ICS there is a method for Tmobile to track tethering and start charging you for it even if you have a custom ROM. Is this so?

Deff agree on that one. But alas, i will miss alot of the OG functions from touchwiz on this phone. Although with GN1, they found work arounds for it. Especially S Note.
My plan is to root as late as I can to avoid messing things up. I figure we won't see an update for a few weeks and by then all the bugs that come along with rooting a phone should be worked out. I really enjoy this phone and can, surprisingly, wait on rooting.
