GB 2.3.3 to ICS - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings
I'm new to the Xperia play scene, i have one, version R800i and i acquire some help from anyone experienced in this.
I have been doing some research in rooting, unlocking and installing roms on this device and i have succesfully rooted and unlocked it.
After doing so i also installed the Recovery System using ClockWorkMod Recovery 5.0.2.7-nAa-r2 install batches, then i continued and tried to flash XperiaPlay Ice Cream Pureness ver.1 through Recovery, which, failed and soft bricked my phone... so i then used Flashtool to downgrade to a stock firmware that i randomly found on the forums.
So the firmware installed is GB 2.3.3 and i was on 2.3.4 previously. I thought i could update my phone to a higher firmware using the PC companion app but it fails saying that my device is modified somehow and cannot upgrade... ok, well, i thought maybe using a ROM anyways so i tried installing Recovery system again but X-parts now says that my phone is unsupported...
Basically i'm stuck on 2.3.3, and i'd like to use a ROM which unlocks its maximum potential.
Any help appreciated!

Thanks for that!
Also is it a specific kernel for each ROM? or there a lot i can choose from?
Would help a lot if u could tell me what ROM is recommended for gaming.
I'm owner of a rooted SGSII with resurrection ROM. Modding a Play is harder xD

well the thing with a xperia play and all 2011 xperia devices is you can't flash the kernel via recovery like most phones,
Kernels are specific to each version and branch. AOSP,CM etc need a different kernel to SE. ICS and GB also have different kernels.
The rom i recommend for gaming is the one i am currently working on, based on TrueAncestor but need to get approval from here before releasing it.

same lol

[Q]{ARC S} How to get into Download Mode?

Hey @ all
i'm a new SE Arc S user and saw my friend using a custom rom on his galaxy s so i decided to give it a try myself ^^
reading the FAQ i got to the thread Read BEFORE flashing!!
it says before flashing i got to test if i can get into the download mode.
so i tried all three methods but i can't.
then i went through many other threads and saw that it actually works on an arc s.
so my question is how do i do it?
i already rooted my phone and i have installed the android sdk including platform-tools and the adb drivers.
additionally i tried to get into recovery mode using the button combination but it doesn't work as well.
Information to the phone:
Arc S (LT18i)
Android-Version: 2.3.4
Build: 4.0.2.A.0.42
Kernel-Version: 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected]#1
if there are any more questions just ask and i will try my best answering them ^^
hope someone can help me

You have to unlock your bootloader, push a kernel via adb, and install a custom ROM via CWM recovery.
Sent from my LT18i using XDA Premium App
EDIT:
Your guide is for the Samsung Captivate.
Start here.
Thx for your replay.
The guide you linked in your post is for an arc.
Does it work on my arc s too?
Of course, I own the Arc S too and about 95 % of the kernel/ROMs/MODs/themes/etc. works for our device too.
heey
i just unlocked my bootloader.
now i would like to back up everything so that i can switch back to the actual state of the phone.
but recovery is only described with changing the kernel.
is there a different option for a backup?
Flash this on stock kernel, go in recovery and take a backup.
Then you can push kernels, flash custom ROMs, etc.
that means if i make a backup using cwm i bavk up the kernel too?
No, you just push kernels via adb, but you can when ever you want push the stock kernel again.

Download Flashtool and ICS (4.1.B.0.587) or GB 4.0.2.A.0.62 Generic firmware, which is a FTF file, and flash it in. Will install fully stock firmware on your phone.

Custom roms with locked bootloaders

Hello everyone last week i got pissed at my arc s because of its stockness.Stock, kernel, rom, widges, slow ui,locked bootloader, not rooted etc etc etc.The i decied to unlock my bootloader, after few hours of research i found out that the only way to unlock it is the paid method i got pissed. Then i decied to install a custom rom and heres what i did"
Since i coudnt instal nor get into cwm i found this https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wdnkuQ1dNaW5zdGFsZXIiXQ..
i installed the program, rooted my phone with DoomLoards method(the one for ICS phones) and then downloaded to rom
What i did next is to download few rom and tested and here are the roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526717 , I did all of the steps with wiping data/cache atc when i installed all the roms, but just choosed the other archive file for the rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1565475 < which im using now
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515148
Remmember that i cant get into cwm if i turn of the phone for some reason,so i run the xperia cwm program and got into it.After that just follow the steps given in the rom's topic "How to install" and thats it.
After 2 reboots my phone was running all of the listed rom which needed unlocked bootloader in order to be installed
I would love some1 else to test my method
To flash new kernal u need bootloder unlock so u cant change kernal in locked bootloader
Roms like
Cm7&9
N miui wont work
Ics base Rom may work
Well yes
im running them with stock kernel.Right now im using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1565475 MuIU and it runs perfectly much better then the stock ICS i had before every with 80 100 free ram

Hi I would like to try what you have mentioned. However, I am currently still on the GB ROM. I have rooted my phone. I presume I need to flash to ICS first before trying your method.
Is there anyway I can flash a stock ICS ROM with a locked bootloader using flashtools? Stock ICS is not released for my region yet so I can't do it by the usual PC Companion way I think.
I dont think that u need to install stock ICS before using this "method".Try installing this https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wdnkuQ1dNaW5zdGFsZXIiXQ and then do the steps said in the rom u want to install.I would suggest u to read very carefuly the tutorial provided by the rom's developer so u wont srew your phone like i did the 1st time aka dele cavik cache/farcroty reset etc etc.U can use the instructions from this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526717 .U can put any rom u want on the sd card but the steps before that got to be the same
So basically what you did was install a Stock Based ROM without install the kernel that ROM need right? And is working?
I have ROOT and ICS Stock, i already search and i was thinking to install a Stock Based ROM without ROM custom kernel but i was afraid
So seams you try it and work right?
Yes ive tried those 3 roms and they work with the stock kernel that my arc s comes with, they detect the phone as lt18i etc etc.Mind that if your bootloader is locked you probably wont be able to get into recovery vie the normal way aka press to volume keys up and down, thats why u need to install the xperia cwm program and reboot into recovery with it.If you do something wrong and your phone freezes at the xperia logo we can fix that(flashing the stick ICS with flashtool using flashmode (holding the back key)

I think you should install ICS first because those roms require baseband 70, that comes with ICS.
I cant confirm that my methot will work with GB since i did not try it

2) KERNELS
a) Sirkay's ICS Kernel HERE (For Overclocking )
b) Arc Knight Kernel by jimbo77 HERE (for Overclocking)
OR
b) Stock ICS Beta Kernel with CWM HERE (thanks cobrato)
OR
c) DoomLord ICS kernel with Wifi Modules .
Sorry guys but i cant try it i dont have the time to reinstall my phone again and i dont have wifi or mobile internet for my programs to be downloaded again.
I have my doubts that this rom will work because of the kernels.Check b) its says stock ICS beta kernel i dont know if this is the stock kernel of the arc or its some other kernel.Ask in the rom's topic if u can install this rom with the stock kernel. If u can they you should be albe to install it.
Mind that i cant be held responsive if something goes wrong with your phone.I can verefy only the roms from the 1st post

ROMs for Locked Bootloader

Hi XDA, I've got an Xperia Play that's rooted with a locked bootloader running ICS, I've used the method in this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762372. So far all I've done is gotten it rooted and cwm installed. However, anytime I try to flash a different ROM over I get bootloop, hangs on the Sony logo. I've tried the installing the following ROMs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877297
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719746
If it makes any difference, I never attempted to install the ROM found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790615) before trying any other ROMs, I just went straight into the ROMs listed above but no luck. So, my question is, what is the best MIUI or AOSP ROM for an Xperia Play with a locked bootloader, and how can I install it?
The roms you were trying to flash needs custom kernel which means you need to unlock bootloader, that's why you get bootloop. For AOSP and MIUI roms you need custom kernel which means you need to unlock bootloader. As for locked bootloader you can only use the locked bootloader ICS by vokal and Markphyton ICS.

I also found one MIUI ROM that said it could be installed on locked bootloader, don't remember where I found it but it said for locked bootloader put the nandroid backup in the recovery folder and install from there, which I did. It got past the Sony logo but then hung at a black screen. How can I unlock my bootloader? My phone status says my bootloader cannot be unlocked, though I figure there must be a way. Can anyone help me out please? Also, thanks for your reply.

I use to have that problem with stock based roms... Try do a full wipe and format system before you flash... The format system bit is important might just fix the boot loop it worked for me before when I installed markphytons rom...but when u format system you will lose cwm so your going to have to install it again

I still have yet to try markphytons ROM since I've wanted to use others, but I guess I have no other option and it's probably better than the ROM that the ROM I'm currently running.
I was under the impression that any ROM based on stocked ICS would work with the above method, is this not true? Where can I find ROMs based on stock ICS 4.0.4? I've searched but haven't had much luck...
Yea that's what I thought aswell but never tried any other roms...i always revert back to gb... It doesn't really make a difference which stock base Rom you flash they all have the same camera and gamepad problem I think

You cant run ics on your xperia play because ICS requires a ICS kernal. You are currently using a GB kernel (locked bootloader) and ICS cant use a GB kernel.
Of course you can run ICS for locked bootloader it's created by vokal1992 but it runs very slow but you can try his/her kickass Gin2JellyBean ROM

If your kernel screen comes up then its not bricked. Just flash the stock ftf. Search for it as r800x stock 2.3.3 ftf. Download flash tool and flash it with that. Its self explanatory. Also Zeus is for r800i you need to use zeusc though it should still have booted (only service wouldn't work). After flashing ftf try again and make sure you clear data/cache/dalvik and format system from recovery before installing. Also it might just take a a couple minutes to boot. Don't worry about bricking the play. Flash tool will fix almost all software problems. Usually the only way to mess it up is physically.

[Q] Can i keep going on r800x Bootloader Unlock?

// It seem that i posted on the wrong section (had alot of tabs opened, sorry for my mistake, if any admin can move the post, will be AWZUM!)
Hello! im pretty new to unlocking bootloaders and stuff, and i wanted to know, i search here on XDA some tutorials and i found this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961298
How ever that tutorial covers 2.3.3, and im running 2.3.2 Stock Rom, also when going to sonymobile and following the steps to unlock the bootloader, itsays to dial *#*#7378423#*#* and check for rooting status, my device dosnt have that displayed ( as a side note, i rooted my deviced almost 2 years ago).
However, I Continued with the sony steps and when dialing *#06# , the cellphone does give me my MEID, i continued with the tutorial, and so far, i got in my mail, my key to unlock my bootloader.
My question is, can i proceed with unlocking my bootloader? i would like to install a custom kernel so i can overclock it, to play games a little more fluid, my current room its a Stock Rom, however ALL the bloatware apps are gone now, my phone just have about 12 apps, and its using 80 megas out of the 300 the xperia has. is this good or i can go better with a custom kernel and a smaller rom?also im from mexico, when doing this im gonna need to reactivate my cellphone or something on the company?
Cellphone: R800x (Custom Build.prop To Be Identified in the market as a R800i)
Status: Rooted
Rom: Stock Rom 2.3.2
Want To: Play games more fluid, try to overclock TO A SAFE SPEED. i dunno maybe 1.6? 1.5?
Thank you! C:
Update to 2.3.4 then it will show in service menu if you can unlock bootloader and if you want root then root through flashtool with 2.3.4

You can unlock your bootloader with flashtool. Doublecheck your unlock code you got from Sony. Make sure you have correct drivers installed. Verizon kept the root status in service menu hidden... But it will work.
Yes it will work but as lordomn said check and make sure all your drivers are good then do it and you should be fine

Yeah, thats easy saying lo, but im particulari new to this.. theres alot of stuff involved, for example, im on 2.3.2 stock rom, i made a revocery image using CWM, and saved it somewhere safe, so here are the questions in order, ( if you can answer them in order would be great ):
1.- im on 2.3.2 stock rom, and i saw a kernel named 2.3.3 stock kernel with overclock, can i flash this with my stock rom and keep my stock rom, or i would need to flash first a 2.3.3 stock rom?
2.- when i want to test a new rom, do i need to flash the kernel first, or the rom?
3.- am i totaly safe with CWM and a nandroid backup?
4.- testing kernel is something safe? i mean can i go back?
5.- if something goes REALLY WRONG, can i flash the stock rom/kernel using flashtool?
6.- i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605631 wich is the stock kernel 2.3.3 overclocked, but im on 2.3.2, can i flash it and stay on 2.3.2 or i need to flash the kernel and then the room, or first the rom and then the kernel?
7.- can i install CWM recovery on all the roms? i pretty much want to be safe, in case something goes wrong, or can i just use FLASHTOOL, to flash the stock firmware / kernel 2.3.2 and start over again?
8.- unlocking bootloader makes the xperia play able to use the flashtool, right? like, whitout unlocked bootloader, how does people flash roms for locked bootladers? using CWM recovery menu, the update .zip function? im pretty confussed right here, like, i unlocked my bootloader, so, i can use flashtool right, thats what unlocking the bootloader its for?

1. im not sure as i never messed around with GB but i believe that 2.3.3 kernel will work on 2.3.2, but why would you want to stay on 2.3.2 when 2.3.3 has better performance?
2. Yes always flash the kernel first then the rom.
3. A Nandroid backup does not back-up the kernel as the partion its on CWM cant see... so if you get a faulty kernel flash or you flash a wrong kernel just use flashtool to get a working one.
4.yes you can always go back from flashing a kernel and yes its pretty much safe.
5. yes you can always flash with flashtool unless for whatever reason you damage the bootloader or the Trim Area then you have to seek for more advanced methods to recover the phone, dont worry tho if you dont accept an official update after unlocking the bootloader you will be fine.
6.i would be safe and upgrade to 2.3.3 using a .ftf so that you dont have any headaches.
7. yes you can flash CWM on all roms, however CWM is not part of the rom but the kernel and almost every costom kernel already has a recovery.
8.no everyone can use flashtool, unlocked or not except r800at models, no thats not what flashtool is for, flashtool is built to flash .ftf files to Sony Ericsson phones, it also has other functions like unlocking a bootloader and other things
if you have other questions just ask and i will do my best to answer them...
