I've been using my S3 with LTE turned off by creating a new APN and setting it to wap.cingular.com. It's been working fine up until this morning when a strange thing started happening. I am able to make and receive phone calls just fine but I have no data connectivity at all. Email won't sync and gives me an error "network unavailable", no Pandora, no youtube, nothing that requires data.
When I switch the APN back to the default one, I get data again, but when I go back to the wap.cingular.com one, no data.
I tried shutting off the phone and pulling the battery for 30 seconds, I tried deleting and recreating the APN, and still nothing.
I've been using that APN because it gives me longer battery life so I'd like to keep using it if possible.
Any ideas on what might be going on? BTW, I'm in the Miami, FL area in case that matter.
At&t is killing edge in not so distant future LTE is the future. Maybe they killd old towers where you live?

Yeah but using the wap.cingular APN puts the phone in 3G mode, not edge. And if they killed the old towers that use that APN, why would I still get phone signal?
I'm at a loss.

I have exactly the same issue. Every 10 minutes with that APN I lose signal for about 30 seconds. Very annoying.

hrmm...and mine only started today. Before today I'm pretty sure it was working fine. I haven't noticed if I'm losing signal every 10 minutes though. I just know that I have no data whatsoever 100% of the time when using that APN.

When my phone is using edge, there is an E right next to my signal meter. It's not using edge when I'm on wap.cingular.com.
And when the E is there, I get data.
Can someone please confirm what the settings should be when I create a new APN using wap.cingular.com? Maybe my settings are wrong?
roaming charges
I did this also, created APN for wap.cingular. If you go to settings->about device->status, you can see that you are on HSPA.
Does anybody know if AT&T charges roaming for this? I hope not. Since the plan is 4G LTE data plan, any other network (even their own HSPA) might be roaming?

Clean flashed a Cyanogemod nightly and I can't connect to LTE
This is my first time using the S3 (came in the mail last night, put CM on it and got a new SIM card)
When I put my new SIM in it, I noticed in the store that data wasn't working.
I go home, reboot my phone a couple times, still nothing.
Flash an updated modem, then tried a new kernel.
Go through my network settings and see that the APN is set to ATT LTE
I set it to ATT and immediately I get HSPA+
I also noticed that there's a network type toggle. Mine was set to WCDMA/GSM rather than LTE/WCDMA/GSM
Under both ATT LTE and the ATT APNs, I am unable to toggle LTE.
Also shouldn't HSPA+ work just fine under the LTE APN?
Not sure what to do from here... This was an upgrade from a gnex and one of the biggest selling points for me was LTE in my area
Are u sure ur APN is right?

APN was correct, it turned out that the data was provisioned properly.
Fixed it by calling 611 and letting them know what my IMEI is. Started working when I reselected the LTE APN after they switched it over.
Thanks though

So I just got the S3 today and immediately got home and rooted and threw cm10 stable on it. Well its been stable minus the data issues in getting. Its switching between 3G and H+ until i try to use data it sticks to H+ but then doesn't work. Speed test times out and so does the play store. Then I have to keep retrying then finally it works? Its bugging me terribly as on the way hone when I was playing with it... none of these issues were present? Any ideas?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Sounds similar to my issues I'm unlocked and on straight talk the indicator always changes at first my speed test were less than 1 MBS down but one day I power cycled and removed my sim and I start getting 6+ MBS down idk its crazy what's your service provider?

Picked it up at T-Mobile, figured im switching from sprint to them anyways might as well see what service is like in my area. Compared to sprint... which there is no comparison its quite sad really. But now its working fine.... until I toggle data then it takes a crap. :-/

the switching between 3g and h+ (4g) is to save on battery live. even a stock nexus 4 does the same thing. the 4g modems that can handle 42mbs can drain tha battery. ther are ways to force h+ but it will drain your batt. if you want to fix search in the cm roms or any aosp rom thread.

Well I don't mind it switching... That's okay. But when I toggle data... To turn it off and then wanna use it again... It doesn't work right away.. It takes like some 10 minutes for the bars to turn to connected and then finally work.

Its probably your apn settings. Make sure proxy and port are blank. ST's recommended apn settings will limit your data speed. BTW make sure you still have recommended setting for MMS proxy and MMS port.

I put my wifes ST sim in and i got 6mb transfer rate, so im calling ST. I def have not used a lot of bandwidth so i dont think im being throttled.
UPDATE: I called straight talk. They reset my internet settings on the account. They called it a 'congestion'. Either that or they were randomly throttling people to see if they notice. Anyway she did that then I rebooted my phone and get a solid 6mbps download connection and about 1 up. So that seems to have fixed the problem! They were pretty easy to deal with.
Glad to hear you got that figured out

When installing Skynote RC9z I forgot to backup my apn's.
Can I get someone to list them for me and how do I set the IPv6 apn.
Plus since I'm on PostPaid I read that I could use MetroPCS apn's, so a list of those please. Thanks
I normally never worry about apn's cause they're automatically restored but I forgot about specifically reading in Skynote thread to backup apn's and forgot.
LoL! Doh on me...

Yea I downloaded and used HiAPN, really wished I would've backed up my APN's from SkyNote RC9.1 cause I noticed I had a IPv6 LTE APN
I created a MetroPCS APN To tinker around with when I'm in low T-Mobile Coverage Zones that have higher MetroPCS Coverages. Shall be interesting, I was connected to it all night last night using it fine no problems.

I just used this link to correct my APN settings on my T-Mobile Note 2
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-6763
Or you can just create a new APN.
Just like to add, I was in a no coverage zone I go to a lot and there for half the day switched from the T-Mobile APN getting kbps like back and forth between edge and gprs and decided to try and switch to the MetroPCS APN I manually added and was instantly get 4G and HSPA or lot LTE speeds between 3mbps to 7 and 10 constantly.

I guess T-Mobile recently updated my tower to lte in past couple weeks. I'm rocking some great speeds, but when I get a phone call it drops the lte and goes back to 4g.
It stays in 4g after I get off the phone and doesn't come back. I have restarted... gone in and out of flight mode. Nothing... when I leave the area and come back or wake up in the morning... then I get lte back again.
Any idea on this?
I'm rooted, stock, wanam, uninstalled knox and carrier iq btw.
Thanks for any assistance

You can't make phone calls on LTE yet with T-Mobile. Thats why it drops to 4g(HSPA+) which allows calls. Not sure why it would not go back to LTE, maybe a sim card problem or a phone problem. I do not have any problems with going from 4g to LTE after calls. I have wanam, no knox, and no carrier iq as well. Are you on stock rom or a moded stock rom. Have you just removed knox and carrirer iq on stock rom?
I'm stock. It could actually be a SIM card issue. I'm using the same SIM card I had from my old galaxy s. I had to cut it to fit the note. Hmmm.. I think that's as good as any place to start.
It could also just be this tower is finicky. Maybe it's not 100% up and running yet. Just wish it would lock onto lte after the call again. It's so choice having those speeds!
Thanks for the SIM suggestion. I'll let you know how it goes.

Is your lte connection stronger than your 4g connection. Because even though it may be faster it always goes with the most reliable connection.
If I know I have lte I just quickly go into dialer and change it to lte only and then back to lte/wcdma and it'll stick to lte afterwards

How do you change it to lte only from the dialer? Is there some sort of #* code? That might be just the temp fix I need.

Couldnt one simply use 4G toggle app?
I tried toggling 4G... going into and out of flight mode... taking the battery out and restarting... going into GSM only and then back to auto select.. Nothing worked.
The method I described above apparently forces LTE only mode and somehow causes it to stick on LTE after going back to Automatic.
I've been doing it all day with great success. It would be nice if it automatic went back to LTE, but in the meantime this is a solution where there wasn't one before.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
It's because they just recently updated the tower. I was having the same issue in my area. I thought it was the phone and had it replaced. I finally spoke to someone at T-Mobile who knew what they were talking about. He said that it takes them months to tweak the tower until they get the optimum signal. Once that happens, you should go back to LTE after a call.
