Does anyone have any other methods to avoid enabling data to send/receive MMS?
I came from the xperia x8 and arc and both can receive and send mms without enabling data. I googled and some ppl said that samsung devices are different from sony's and that data must be enabled to use MMS. I find this very depressing coz i dont have any data plan and if i enabled data, my prepaid will be deduced alot. Anyone have any workaround regarding this problm?
-plz help if there are ppl from malaysia...

Have you asked your carrier to actually block data instead of charging you if you use it?
I have to ask, why would you buy a phone such as this and not have a data plan? You are missing most of the advantages of the phone.
I'm not understanding your request. MMS requires data. So blocking data = blocking MMS.
Different carriers use different methods for allowing MMS. For example, Rogers sends all MMS through a different APN than regular data. That way it charges a fixed rate for each MMS, instead of it coming out of your data plan. MMS works without a data plan, so it would lead me to believe that you do not have the MMS APN set up for your carrier.

Interesting. Verizon does the same, but it still sends over data.

The way Rogers does it, you can still ask for data to be blocked, but are still able to send MMS. All MMS data goes through one APN and is charged per MMS; All other data goes through another APN, and is charged per kb.
Nice.
T-Mobile in the US separates it as well so you can send MMS without a data plan.
For Rogers, you can just delete the data apn. There is a second apn just for mms anyway.

You should be able.to disable data on your account or you could call support to disable it. Allways worked for me

So i have searched and searched but have not found something that works. I have an unlocked USCC Touch Pro 2 that i am using on Tmobile. Calls and Text work fine but when it comes to MMS and Data i am stuck. Whenever i try to send an MMS i get a Box saying there is no data connection. I even installed a preconfigured tmobile MMS cab. Still no luck. Can someone help me with the data settings? Thanks.

Is this a US Cellular phone? I'm surprised that a CDMA phone works on T-Mobile's (GSM) network at all... But if you can receive calls then I guess it does.
The data setting for T-Mobile -- the APN -- is epc.tmobile.com
So...if you have a place under Settings>Connections>Manage/Edit existing connections for APN or Access Point Name then epc.tmobile.com is it for data.
I don't know about MMS...I don't use it.
Its a CDMA/GSM phone.
MMS is wap.voicestream.com

Did you try the APN I suggested and did it work -- did you get a data connection?
Anyone know of a CAB that does all this Data and MMS settings like a T-Mobile Carrier Provisioning?
every since i got my GN it has had trouble sending or receiving MMS, doesnt matter if i'm on 3g or wifi
i have tried clearing the cache and force closing, this works about 20% of the time
anyone know of a fix for this?
From what I've experienced and know, you can't only send/receive MMS through 2g/3g, NOT wifi. MMS is a carrier based service, which is why it won't work on wifi. Some roms have the ability to download on Wi-Fi though, don't know of any here, but quite a few on the G2x.
Anyways, how long do you give it to send/receive till you decide that its a "failure"? It would also help to disable "auto retrieve" in the Messaging app.

This issue is most likely related to the apn settings provided by your carrier. I had this issue too, and found out on two separate carriers that I needed data on one, even though it said I didn't. On the other carrier, I just had the APN settings wrong, and that my current carrier allows MMS through 3g data without charging for it.

+1. This.
You need to verify your MMS APN settings with your carrier.

So I need to call sprint and say "I need to verify my mms apn settings?
Or is this something on my phone?
On your phone.
Settings >> More >> Mobile networks >> Access point names
You can probably find the correct settings on Sprints website somewhere or by googling Sprint APN

When I get MMS from T-Mo users it shows up, but when I go to look at it the message is blank. Has happened from many T-Mo users but no other carrier.
Anyone have ideas?
I tried different roms, messaging apps, broadbands and apn settings, no work.
If you have ideas keep them coming even if I don't test....will test tomorrow....don't want to keep bothering ppl all night.

Who's your carrier, AT&T? My friend is experiencing the same issue. At least, I think it's the same. I'm on T-Mo and he never gets my MMS.
I tried putting the different APNs in his phone as well. I'm honestly not sure, either.
Wife and I are on tmo and I can't get any of the dumb ass mms that she sends me.
I take it as a blessing really.

I'm on T-Mobile but it's weird cause before I was able to send them. But until Wednesday I tried to send one and it said it failed. I rebooted the phone and cleared cache and dalvik and it still didn't work

Yes, I am on AT&T....seems like a GNex issue though.

The T-Mo users I know can send them but it just comes in as a blank 1KB MMS.....
No one has any idea here.....or can we at least get people to confirm they CAN get MMS from T-Mo users...
Mine does this sometimes. Im on sprint
Im pretty sure this is a gnex issue between tmobile and ATT, Switching my sim into a tmobile branded phone and it will send. Seems that all other providers receive my MMS though. I can receive an MMS from a Gnex on ATT to my Gnex on Tmobile. Im thinking its something to do with the user string of the Gnex and tmobile not knowing what it is.
I can send MMS to any one except people on AT&T. My best friend has an Xperia Play 4G on AT&T and my pictures just shows up as a white box. I'm using T-Mobile

I started having an mms issue on T-Mo recently. Fixed it by resetting the apn settings (the only thing that seemed to change was the ipv6 changed back to ipv4 - i believe you are supposed to have separate apns for data and mms)
Pull up the apn list, hit menu, then reset to default...
No one has any ideas about this ? I'm pretty pissed off now because I called AT&T and they basically said since it non-AT&T your screwed.......
and can we please get an AT&T user to confirm receiving MMS from T-Mo using this phone?
Not using a G.Nexus, using an HTC Sensation with a CM9 variant. Just noticed that I'm only having trouble receiving MMS from TMO friends. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if anyone has a fix
I should probably clarify that I do receive the message if there's text in it, my phone recognizes it as an MMS but there is no picture and the size is 1kb.
It's definitely the IPv6. I switch it on and MMSs won't come or go. I switch back to IPv4 (and reboot..grrrr) and MMSs send/receive fine. I have checked and cannot find anything in the APN settings that's supposed to fix it.
You have to set up two APNs on the T-Mo phone:
Ipv6 for data
Ipv4 for MMS
I'm in the same situation. I'm using GNex on AT&T. My friend has GNex on T-Mobile. I can receive text but no picture messages from him or anyone that has T-Mobile. Let's keep this thread going to find a solution.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I've given you the solution.
The guy with the T-Mo phone needs to tweak his settings...
even tried to change the apn. I have a Skyrocket on AT&T my brothers and girlfriend have T-mobile and they send me MMS but nothing comes through.
I know other people that have AT&T and they have I-phone and get all MMS messages from T-mobile.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I haven't been able to get MMS to download without manually turning on cellular data. My LG G2 used to do this automatically. I don't pay for cellular data, but I get free MMS with my texting bundle. With the G2, it would download the MMS but I wouldn't get charged data fees.
Now that I've switched to the S3, I can no longer do this. Is there any way to get that working? I've tried a few different APN settings but no luck so far.
Any help is much appreciated.
My sister in law has an s4, stock rom, mms on Rogers, no data because it is blocked, but she has to leave data enabled in order to receive mms.
So, I'm coming from a S7 edge, and I'm on xfinity mobile. When I'd send an mms or my wife sends me one, it would auto download with data off. But since using the note10+ I sent my wife a pic and its requiring I put data on to send it. Asked her to send me one and I need to put data on to download it.
Is there something in settings to look into?
The s7edge was a tmobile branded phone, that was flashed using the verizon firmware, (for some reason xfinity firmware didnt connect at all, which is odd but anyways)
It's not a big deal, but I'm wondering why it's an issue now.
Thanks guys!
I am on Xfinity Mobile as well. If you go look at their own forums, many others with many types of phones have this issue. The support agents over there either say that is how its supposed to work or do not know what the issue is.
MMS is based on the 3G infrastructure that was the addition of an additional data layer, so I would assume it has always required data as it has always required a minimum 3G connection.
yes you need data for mms, not sms but yes for mms
