Recent apps menu - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

Hello,
I am currently on SlimICS, but since the beginning I am really annoyed by the ICS recent apps menu (when long pressing the home button), which shows minatures of the recent apps.
The thing takes several seconds to pop up, and then you need to scroll up and down to find the app you want to fall back to ; usually it also lags quite a lot when doing that (different roms, same issue, don't think it's my phone).
Besides having miniatures being irrelevant in my opinion, switching to a different application became rather long with ICS, and I really miss the Froyo/GB way, with just the list of icons popping up instantly --all the icons showing up in the screen.
I am looking for a mod that could change that ICS recent app menu to the one used in earlier versions of Android. Does anyone know if that exists, or would know how to create it ?
Cheers

I'm using an app called "morerecent" from the market. Same recent view as gb. I've linked it to another app called "swipestarter" so I can launch it from a screen swipe.

not a bad workaround, yes. However I had tested an AOKP rom few months ago, which I remember was offering different kinds of such list, including the Froyo/GB style. Maybe I can try to extract the relevant files from the rom and push them to my own.
I don't think that could work at all given my current knowledge though

Turning off Sense in Favor of Vanilla Android No Longer Possible?

Hi there!
I've written a FAQ with Android tips & tricks and tweaks that I try to keep updated, and when I made an attempt to turn off HTC Sense on my Desire the other day in order to get the default Android homescreen, the old method didn't work.
Clearing the defaults for HTC Sense had no effect, and Home wasn't even listed in the application manager.
Is there another way? Perhaps Sense on Android 2.1 devices goes so deep that there isn't even a vanilla Android below it anymore?
Thanks
When you say "no longer possible" are you saying you were able to do this before? From what I know Launcher2, the default 2.1 app launcher, is not installed so you have to find the apk somewhere and install that first.
When the reviewers were first getting hold of Desire's I think there was a video of someone turning off Sense and running stock Android. It was a really simple process too, from what I remember.
When the phone was officially released people noticed you couldn't do this any more.
I think that's what the OP is referring to.
HTC removed the standard Home before they shipped the Desire, so it's never been possible on post-release handsets. It was an option on pre-release phones, though, so people got videos out showing how to do it, and then no dice...
You can install HelixLauncher 2 or 1, which will give you similar homes. I'm not sure if the regular Launcher2.apk will install - I seem to remember trying it and failing. Don't recall for sure, though.
not again lol....well this has been discussed before again and again, the retail version's sense ui cannot be turned off...
Well, it can if you install a different home replacement and clear Sense's defaults.
You can install Launcher2.apk you should be able to find it in some other threads
(use the search?). I had no problems installing it.
Then do the 'clear defaults' setting on the Sense UI application, press 'home' and it will ask you which home screen you want to use.
Better still, install the Helix Launcher 2 from the Market. I prefer it because of the ability to insert 4 static shortcuts alongside the menu button where the space was just previously wasted.

Any way to change number of recent apps?

I did some searching and couldn't find anything. I'm using Android Revolution.
See this thread.
I got it to be 5 instead of 3 5/8th. And played with the numbers to occupy more of the width of the screen and not look stretched out.
good day.
Thanks, but I don't care how big they are. My issue is that the switcher takes a few seconds to appear on screen when there are like 20 recent apps listed. If I could limit it to 5-8 I'd be a lot happier.
Looking for the same. I'm finding myself using the recent apps key less and less since it takes longer to wait for it to boot up and switch app than just pressing back and choosing another app manually

Same here. I'm also getting into the habit of swiping them all away occasionally, which seems ludicrous.
There has to be something somewhere in the code that you can edit that will limit the number of recent apps. Right now it seems like its set to "all" or "unlimited" or 50... lol. But there is probably something somewhere in an XML file that you can change... not sure where it's located... SystemUI perhaps?
Does no one else notice this very annoying delay? Doesn't seem like many people have interest. I know this phone is capable of a lot more. The software just seems to be the hindering part most of the times

SwipePad APP alternative

Does anyone know of another APP like Swipe Pad. It's a good APP but it lags a lot when i open an APP.

Thanks. I tried that re-launcher APP and it works flawlessly. The only issue i have is that you can't remove categories and APP's so it kind makes it overwhelming.

I have tried a bunch of them, and I always end up coming back to swipepad. Don't even remember the names of the apps I tried but they were a bunch of them

Wave launcher didn't want to install for some reason. It keeps FC. But I found this APP that's almost like swipe pad without there lag.

I've loved swipepad but always hated the lag since I had an sgs2 and even when it became faster on my modern phones. This is fast, thanks and I can use both apps.
Although there are a bunch of these, there's nothing quite like SwipePad. I've tried to switch many times and I end up back with SwipePad like an old girlfriend. The only thing is, SwipePad doesn't seem to get updated very much. It took ages for the Lollipop update, and soon after it was done, Marshmallow came along. The context panel no longer works and blacklist also fails to work. It's a tad less responsive to the point that sometimes when you select an app to open, it misses. You have to linger maybe 200 milliseconds. Those things are annoying but even with those annoyances, it's still the best out there by quite a bit. I have two "pads", each with 12 functions. Twenty-four functions is quite enough for me when they are easy to get at and it doesn't require me to switch from Nova Launcher.

I recently updated my tablet from Kitkat to Marshmallow and realize that "Dynamic Pads: SwipePad add-on" doesn't work as Context Panel. From other reviews in Play Store I get feedback that this problem started a long time ago in Lollipop. Context is shown not for active app, but for active Launcher.
I overcome this problem yourself easily because I have rooted device, I moved "SwipePad Dynamic Pads" app from user apps to system apps. Now it works again as it should. Probably some app's permission restriction in LP/MM...
I know this post is old, however I found it with Google Search.
You can give my app a try, I believe it's the closest thing to SwipPad and even taking the idea further to a new level (keep an eye on the coming updates)

Questions about s3 running CM10

I am new to the whole flashing roms thing but managed to get cm10 on my phone. I have a few questions and also would like to know if there is a better rom. First question is why when I hold the home button there is no task manager just where I can switch to different apps? Second are these apps all running and draining my battery? Third is there a rom with a better camera app? I really liked the stock camera app that came with the phone but I know I can't get that? Another question is why can't I set the double home tap in cm10? I'd like that for voice search if there's a way. Last question I have is, is there a rom that is like the stock one that came with my phone but runs jelly bean? I know touchwiz has a lot of bloadware but I liked the overall options it had (camera app, task manager built into app switcher, etc). Thanks for all the help and sorry if I've posted in the wrong place I'm just looking for help.

1) The task manager is part of TouchWiz (samsung twist on Android) and not part of the original android os. As far as I can tell, cyanogenmod tries to get close to clean android as possible.
2) When you hold the home button and see a list of apps, like ios, those are list of recently opened apps. They may or may not be running. In most cases its best to just leave it. Task managers, clearing ram, etc all of those don't really work. You can read/search why it doesn't. In short, you kill it, you either need to load it, or it loads by it self again (services)
3) Try looking for a better replacement for camera in the play store? Not really sure what you mean by better.
4) that's one thing I don't like about android; it doesn't have the ios activator identical. You can hold the menu button and it opens search. You can set another action with the menu button in CM10 by going to settings>system>hardware keys
5) I have personally tried a note ii and Galaxy S3 sprint port by the same dev. I'm on mobile so I won't be able to link you. Search for it
Best of luck

Nooby to nooby lol...I was just going to try that cm10 rom but seeing what you wrote not sure I want too at this time but I think the current Rom I am using may be something you will like an enjoy..it's pretty much how the phone was stock.
All the options you asked about are still there, it's is just a bit more cleaned up and seems to run faster over stock, as of now I don't see any issues yet.
The link for the rom is below, make sure you back up and follow the op installation instruction, as this stuff is very confusing lol
Hope this helps

[Q] Press "Recent Apps" button twice

I have been rooted with a custom ROM basically since day one (almost 2 years ago). If I press the "Recent Apps" button twice it will close all running recent apps. Is this a feature on stock Android or is this a feature of the various ROMs I have been using?
I ask because I just went to play with a Nexus 5 today at Best Buy and noticed this 'double-tap' feature to close all apps was not on the N5. I am trying to figure out if this feature was removed on KitKat or if it was never a feature on stock Android.
That's a PACman specific feature. (I forgot whether AOSPA has it or not)
Sent from Google Nexus 4 @ CM11
I never really liked that feature, preferred the separate clear all recent button.
Often times I'd end up killing apps that I'd wanted to still run in the background.
