how can i do system FORMAT on the S3? I know you can wipe data/factory reset from recovery but how can I do a full system FORMAT?
thanks
EDIT: making things a little more clear... Id like to format the system so i can restore using a rom, not stock.
The best way to perform a system restore is to restore you nandroid backup (you did make one right??)
If your not rooted than truly a factory reset is the best you can do! Odin would be overkill as the system has been untouched
Ummm... read a thread or two...

Cmon man you changed your question, and his answer was perfect to your original question. Any who, a factory reset us as good as its gunna get. Factory reset and reflash the room (or factory reset, wipe cache and dalc, and format system as well to really clean things up) make sure to DEFINITLY reflash the ROM if u choose to format system

i changed the wording to make it more clear what i was trying to do. thats why i wrote "EDIT: blah blah blah" stating that im making it more clear and i capitalized the words that were changed.
his post was to a thread that linked the downloads for stock backups which is not what i was asking about. i want to do a full system restore with another rom and not use anything stock.
im wanting to wipe the phone completely and then flash a rom (not a stock nandroid)
Edit: kennyglass123 helped me figure it out... thanks everyone.

I just tried flashing the new wimax update and it went through and succeeded, but now my phone reboots after a minute or 2 once it's fully booted. If I'm in recovery mode it doesn't have that problem at all. I'm using baked 1.5.

Have you tried the standard "wipe cache and data, then reflash your ROM"?

Did you try flashing an older version or a nandroid? If you are using clockwork make sure signature checking is turned on too, you could have a corrupted file.

I tried flashing an older version and that didn't work either. What is this thing about nandroid? How do I go about that?
Edit: I fixed it by restoring google proprietary stuff(forgot the name) and restored nand. Which one fixed it? I have no idea, but it basically restored me to factory 2.1, but with root access. Mods please lock/ delete this. It's in the wrong forum and I apologize. Thank you

A nandroid is a backup of your system you can make from the recovery, it's always a good idea to make one before you flash anything. I'm not sure if that covers your radios though.
Do you use titanium backup or anything? Without knowing how your phone is set up (what recovery you are using, etc) the only thing I can think of would be to flash the engineering bootloader. That should fix it but you would have to reinstall your ROM afterwards.

The nandroid restore worked because I had a backup I made while following the guide. I fixed it doing that, but while trying to update the radio to the current one again figuring if it messed up I can restore it and again the same problem came up, but this time nandroid restore wont work and it's telling me to use adb restore, but adb says your device is not found.
BTW all of my phones stuff come directly from the idiot proof guide(recovery etc)
bump... I'm sorry I'm sitting here with a semi broken phone. Is it possible to download someone else's nandroid back up and install it on mine? I know it will fix my problem as it already did, but for some reason now it's telling me to do it with adb, but my usb seems to not be working either.
I m about to switch Roms ( from Unleashed Ultra to Unleashed Darkk R3)
to to a back up do i use Titanium back up or How do i do a Nandroid ?
Is it the same??
No, Titanium backs up your apps and settings, which you should do. After that, boot into recovery, if on clockwork, select backup, which backs up your rom as it is, apps, settings, ect. If on amon_ra, leave the first 3 things checked, then add whatever else. The wipe your factory/data, cache, and dalvik. After flashing the rom, load up titanium and restore your apps and data, not system settings.
Also, nandroid = backup; they're the same. The backup is just called nandroid on amon_ra.

Titanium Backup is used to back up your apps and app data. Download it from the market, hit batch, then backup all apps with data.

No.
My advice to you, if you dont know what a nandroid is, maybe you shouldnt be trying new roms just yet. If you dont know what you are doing, you could very well brick your phone.

Agreed.
You should really have a firm understanding of your rooted device before flashing anything. I wish everyone had to pass a test before being able to flash anything via recovery or Rom Manager.

Hi everyone,
I got a question. Is it a must to wipe before flashing a rom? For example, I'm on a rom and i want to flash another rom. Why is it a must to wipe it? What happens if I don't wipe it and flash a new rom?
Kind regards,
Semih
Its not a must but its highly recommended if you don't sometimes you'll get bootloops, sometimes you'll get random crashes and apps not working or you could get very lucky and everything might work fine. You should at least wipe the /cache partition, you won't lose any data.

if you are on the same rom and the dev updates then most of the times no it is no need to update. if you are trying different roms though then yeah best to do is wipe. if you go into ARHD thread in the first page there is a script called superwipe. download that and flash it before you flash a new rom and that will do all the wipes for you. or just do it the old fashion way in recovery and reason why to wipe sometimes so you do not have old system data from previous roms

Also make sure 100% you have your Rom on your sd as you can't mount sd in recovery and after running there is no system.

And also a backup..that is the most important thing...went through a lot of threads that i read and most of the people on some threads ask on how to restore using RUU cause they do not have a backup of their stock rom..So please always make a backup my friend
It's not. They call that a "dirty flash". I've never done it but I've heard that it's not advised.
I want to flash a new rom, but i don't want to use titanium backup to restore my apps, thats to much time. And if I wipe it, my settings will lost. So, i don't want to do it. But it seems that I have to do it, otherwise i'll get some errors and bootloops etc. I thank you all for your fast reply. I'll wipe my phone
A nandroid backup. If I do it while on the old rom, can I restore it on the new rom? not an updated rom, just another rom of another developer..

Yeah thats fine, I usually flash the old rom first then restore the backup when coming from cm9 or miui to stock to avoid bootloops etc.

OK so I think I have my phone 'rooted' via the toolkit, (even though theres no busybox?) I now have A few questions regarding flashing roms...
1. How do I go back to stock JB?? Do I have to download a stock rom and flash that if I want to go back? (Cant seem to find one for my build which is JRO03C)
2. If I flash a rom, will everything reset? .. If everything is reset, will a nandroid restore bring back all my apps and settings as they were??
3. Is it easier to flash a rom via the toolkit, or through the SD Card??
Im still a noob, so all help and explanation is appreciated thanks all!
Going back to stock rom is as easy as restoring a nandroid...
Things a nandroid won't restore:
Radios (you'll always have the same ones unless YOU change them by visiting a thread...and downloading and flashing the radio)
Bootloaders (same as above. This won't change unless you explicitly do so.)
Will you lose everything?
If you did it right, lol.
Use my guide.
Post 2 of my sig below.
It'll get you through the process of wiping/installing/and restoring your apps and such.

There are two parts of restoring apps and data. If you flash a new ROM and want to go back to stock all you have to do is restore your nandroid and that'll bring back all your apps, settings, and put the phone into exactly the same state as when you made the backup.
If you want to restore all your apps and settings into the NEW ROM then I recommend using Titanium Backup (there's a free version in the market/play store). You can't restore apps into a new from your nandroid, but Titanium Backup can backup and restore most everything. I have Titanium redo all my backups once a week just to be safe. Occasionally a nandroid won't work for some reason and recent backups have saved my life more than once.
Hey folks!
This may be a silly but I just want to clarify, it is possible to switch between roms quickly with Nandroid backups?
In better words, I mean to have a Nandroid backup of Rom A with all the apps, settings etc. saved, and I flash Rom B to see if I like it, and if I want to switch back to Rom A, all I have to do to get back to where I was previously is to do a clean install of Rom A and restore Nandroid backup. Is this possible? Google tells me it's possible with other devices, but I just want to make sure.
Thanks!
No need to even do a clean restore.
Just backup rom A, install rom B, and when you want to go back to A, make a backup of B and do a nandroid restore.
Of course after wiping data and cache.
It's not silly, but the answer is obvious when you think about it, and most People figure stuff like this out from just trying it, if you've already made a backup it doesn't matter if something you attempt fails.
