Google earth optimization - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

So I got my S3 last week. I love this thing! So much faster than my original epic 4G that I've been using since now. I also have a Toshiba drive that recently got the ICS update. For sh*ts and giggles I wanted to compare my phone to my thrive as far as performance goes. The application I used to compare is Google earth since it's a big app with a lot going on. Turns out that my Thrive runs Google earth faster than my S3. I realized that the Google Earth application is actually optimized for the Tegra chip. I wonder when the Google Earth application will be optimized for the S4 chip in our phone and what other applications run better on Tegra versus S4 chip.

[R] Galaxy s2 browser

Can someone port over the browser from the galaxy s2??..the browser is fast and it uses GPU acceleration like ios and windows phone 7...it surpasses the iPhone 4 and windows phone 7 in the browsing department
The froyo browser already killed both the ios and wp7 browsers.
Texted while driving
yea but have you seen the galaxy s2 browser in action..there is no lag at all when scrolling.....can it be easily ported though??

It isn't going to help you right now unless you plan on porting it. The browser will not work on EC05 and I doubt it would work on EE03 either unless someone takes on the project of porting it over.
yea, i was hoping to see if anyone was working on it or could work on it??...hopefully in the future, it can be ported over
Once we get official Gingerbread I am sure someone will port it over if it is a lot better than the one that we end up with.
I am very sorry I can't do it tonight I'm currently have issues with my computer

If I'm not mistaken, The gingerbread browser we're going to get is the same thing; It does have the kinetic/over scrolling like iOS and its very smooth.

I believe all your seeing is the power of dual core, not a major improvement in the browser. I've seen the atrix literally destroy hopped up single core phones, like my [email protected] As far as I know its all really about the sunspider0.9.1 test. Best I can get is 4369, I believe all the dual cores score around 2000~2500, roughly 2x what our epics can do at their best.
Side note; apples latest update to ios 4.whatever, takes the 1ghz (or less) a4 to around 4100 in sunspider0.9.1. Yeah apple is now kicking our ass (googles) in browser speed vs per clock. I know all this not because I like crapple, but because I pay attention to the competition.

Try out Opera 11, it really shines in Sunspider (at 1.2ghz I got 2953ms), and of course it has hardware acceleration so it is silky smooth.

That's where android=win, options and we have flash. I do realize we have faster browsers than stock, its just my baseline is always the stock browser and its the one I prefer.
if only you could try opera mobile, you could see how smooth the interface is during zooming, panning and even during text-reflows! definitely no lags at all even on my 600Mhz legend cpu. Opera mobile uses hardware acceleration on its UI, and that explains the difference in its fluidity against the stock.
i also believe samsung has implemented hardware acceleration on its web browser, and if someone can really port galaxy s2's browser, that would be good!! very good!
by the way, i have also used a galaxy ace's web browser, and it's hardware accelerated as well (i think) and maybe they have used the same thing on galaxys2?
Im sorry but the browser is pretty bad, it gives really bad checker box all over the place.
Worst browser i have seen in a long time.

The subject that was bound to come back sometime - Gaming

Hey everyone,
This question was bound to come back sometime, and since I have one day left to return the Galaxy Nexus, I wanted to re-raise the issue.
First of all, the GPU of the Galaxy Nexus is the PowerVR SGX540 clocked at 307mhz. Other phones that have come out relatively close to the Galaxy Nexus are the Samsung Galaxy S ll , HTC EVO 3D and finally the iPhone 4s (or the iPad in the site below) have much better benchmark scores compared to the Galaxy Nexus. Now I know the performance heavily depends on the drivers/etc installed but would that make any difference from a phone like the Galaxy S in terms of gaming performance?
According to these benchmarks: here the phone with the PowerVR SGX 540 at 300mhz (Optimus 3D) performs pretty horribly, and I have this phone for another 14 months. Since I consider myself an avid gamer, I want to know if you guys think this phone can last 14 months in terms of the GPU. I know its found in plenty of older devices such as the Galaxy S and the Nexus S, but there are so many games already optimized for it so do you guys think developers will continue to support this fairly dated GPU for the 14 months to come?
Now I'm no technology expert, so I'd appreciate if someone else could help me out here
Thanks,
Mosh
benchmarks don't really mean much to be honest. you could run the exact same test 10 times and get a different result each time.
as far as what this phone can handle... well, i have tried the following:
Shadow Gun
Sentinel 3
Samurai II
Fruit Ninja
Field Runners HD
Shinobi Barrage
all those games play fine for the most part, just a lil slow down here & there in the more graphically intense games like Shadow Gun(this game also makes the phone run very hot). as far as other phones go, i have tried all those games on my Rezound and they played just fine on that phone to. actually, Shadow Gun was a bit smoother on the Rezound(but only slightly).
i'd say as far as 'top-of-line' phones go(on Verizon at least) the 2 tops are the Nexus & the Rezound.
as for the future, supposedly Asus & HTC have quad-core phones with Tegra 3 GPU's coming out 1st Q 2012, but who knows how soon that actually will be(most likely will be push backs & won't see the light until summer or later)
First, the GN GPU is clocked at 384 MHz, second there is not yet a single game (game, not benchmark!) out there that comes close to utilizing the Tegra2 GPU (which is not "very good" either) to its fullest. Draw your own conclusions.
Mine are that the GN GPU will be more than enough until the phone is "old tech" anyway.

Umm.. no.. its actually clocked at 307MHZ. Only way to see it clocked at 384MHZ is if you OC to 1.4 GHZ (CPU) which many Nexus become unstable or become slower for some reason. The Rez plays games better but its not a huge upgrade either. If you want a stronger GPU, wait for the Adreno 225+ or the new Galaxy S3. The Tegra 3 from what I remember reading seems to be still slower than the Exynos chip which to me is a dissappointment.
If we get games like Real Racing 2 graphics or better, our GPU's will not be strong enough to support them. The iPad 2 at times slightly stutters on Real Racing 2 even with its strong GPU.

The only game that I've tried to play other than Words with friends and Hanging with friends is Airport Mania 2 HD, which runs horribly on my Galaxy Nexus (with and without GPU rendering forced). Just food for thought. I'm wondering if 4.0.3 will help it out any. If it does, good, if not, oh well as I really don't play games that often, but it would still be nice to be able to play it on a "top of the line" phone. Other than that, I still like my phone.
I noticed the slow downs in Shadow Gun too. Which prompted me to try overclocking. My phone stutters at 1.4 but very smooth at 1.35. Games play better too. And they're just getting started, who knows what they can do... I think its gonna work out great.

The A5 in the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 has a dual-core SGX543MP2, which is why it benchmarks a lot higher. If you want a mobile device that will give the best gaming experience, the iPhone 4s is your best bet as it has the most powerful GPU out of all phones available.
i thought the gpu was 308 mhz? aaaand you don't need to oc to 1.4ghz for 384 mhz. i'm running 384 mhz stock and uv'ed. and yeah the 543mp2 suck up juice when you push them. but so does the 540. i'm happy with it. great balanced phone. should last two years. and somebody supposedly oc'ed the the 540 to 512mhz but i haven't seen a followup or proof yet so who knows.
You want a great gaming device, get a tablet, or better yet, the PS Vita, which will have much better software titles from A+ game studios.
I hear all of this talk about how well or how poorly these devices (i4s included) do with gaming, but I say, who cares? There are good games on Android and iOS, but hardly anything worth investing 30-40 hours of time in, like the Vita will have. The way I see it, if I really wanted to have an amazing portable gaming experience, the 250 dollar Vita will give me Uncharted, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, LittleBigPlanet, etc etc. The list goes on. Plus that 250 dollars will, as a console, last me more than 2 years. Plus it actually has buttons and thumbsticks and such, things that are pretty important IMO.
Thanks for all the replies guys!
One thing to be noted though: The GPU can be overclocked without overclocking the CPU.
Another thing though, I'm actually not going to return it because I realized that I barely need to play a 20+ hour game on my phone. At home I have a computer (With an i5 2500k and a GTX 560 Ti), Ps3, xbox 360, etc so there's no room for a mobile device in terms of gaming at home, and when I'm out I'm usually at school so I barely game, and when I do, casual games are sufficient for my needs.
Thanks again guys
The gs2 epic touch gets the Mali 400 I think. Its an older but still very fast gpu. My wife's gs2 pulls 4200+ quadrant stock. Considered one of the best on the market...even w age.

Quadrant doesn't mean much, it isn't optimized for ICS yet.
The Mali 400 is a newer and much faster GPU than the SGX540, the 540 is a leftover from the original Galaxy S and Nexus S. The Exynos CPU is nothing short of amazing. I did some side by side testing of the Nexus and the GS2 today and it wasn't even close the GS2 smoked it in every test and game.

I wasn't trying to come off that quadrant was THE benchmark but over 4k stock seems nice.
I knew the gs2 was a beast but had no idea til we bought it. No buyers remorse here. It can stay on gbread forever for all I care. It runs better than anything I have used.
Haters gonna hate, but if you want a device for gaming, you should honestly look at an Apple device. The native nature of iOS apps gives Apple an advantage over Android right from the get go. Java apps will always be slower than apps written in C (or in this case Objective-C) for any given level of coder skill. Then you have to consider that Apple's current iPhone/iPad platform are running hardware that is uncharacteristically powerful compared to not only what Apple is notorious for using, but to most Android devices as well. Finally, the grim reality is still that the big name studios prefer to develop for iOS.
If you are ok with giving up many of the freedoms you may have become accustomed to with Android in exchange for gaming performance and selection, then the 4S is probably a good choice.

Play vs MT4GS

Hi I have a myTouch 4G Slide on T-Mobile and was wondering if how is the Play on AT&T compared to it. I have wanted a Play but I was on contract and was not able to get one, but now that I'm off I would like to consider this phone.

Depends on how much of a fan you are of video games (especially emulation) cuz that's the main reason to get the PLAY. It's a bit less powerful than your current phone (single core too), but still plenty fast.

Games/gaming

I am not a very long time owner of the Nexus, but was wondering about gaming limits on the Nexus. My reason for asking is that while browsing games on Google Play, most are listed as incompatible with my device. I am not in America or Europe, so could this be because of my location, or is the Nexus just not a good phone for games?
That's weird, almost all games I find are compatible with mine but I'm in america....
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
That is probably just your location messing up google play's app selection :cyclops:
The nexus is perfectly capable of running most new games available in the market now. Bear in mind, developers have to optimize their apps/games for crappier devices too, so you can expect to have a fine gaming experience.

Buy this, or wait for Tegra 4 Tablet?

Hello,
I was going to buy this tablet soon but I just found out about the Tegra 4 CPU.
It is supposed to have better performance than SnapDragon S4 CPU which the Nexus 7 flo tablet has.
Do you think I should wait until a 7 inch Tegra 4 Tablet comes onto the market or should I buy the Nexus 7 now?
Thanks,

Kindle Fire HD 2 will supposedly have the Snapdragon 800. The Nexus will have more development support including kernels to overclock the CPU to 2GHz+.

Gotta be able to flip those pages faster than you can blink, yo.
Tegra 4 and SD 800 are just days to a few months away. They have the potential to be awesome.
That said this S4 is more of a SD 600 than a S4 and as you can see from the Dev section, can be clocked to 2.1 or possibly even 2.3 GHz. The GPU can also be OCed to 487. This machine will give all a user needs if they like the 7 inch form factor at a very reasonable price.
Also while the SD 800 is awesome to unlock it past the potential already achieved by the Devs on this one will take a good Dev on that device. So
Honestly as a user, if you like a 7 inch tablet this is the one for this year IMHO. But if your a tech geek like me well... I like to buy them all lol.

I'm thinking that I should just get this tab and be happy with it for a year or more. I mean the most intensive game I play is Riptide GP2, and my Nexus 4 runs that fine on stock with high settings. I will also be doing some emulation on it, but if my Nexus 4 can run it, the Nexus 7 will be able to even better
2.3 GHz is insane for a mobile device that is $230. But since money is pretty tight for me maybe a $230 tablet is probably all I will be able to afford. And about the Kindle Fire, those have always been bad for development and I like to have root and custom roms, and stuff.
So I think this will be the tablet that I'm going to get.
Thanks

Never trust nVidia's promises or even their benchmarks. Their chips ALWAYS look killer on paper, but they are almost always very buggy and don't work the way nVidia claims they should. Check out every Tegra device made, short of the Nexus 7. Updates very rarely came, and when they did they were buggy and crappy. Even the Nexus 7 on 4.2 was a step backwards in terms of battery, speed, usability, etc. I won't touch another Tegra device until they prove otherwise.
The SnapDragon 800, on the other hand, while yes, it will be faster than the new N7, I don't believe will make its way into many 7" devices. Its just not necessary. The CPU isn't much faster than the current 600. Its main claim to fame will be its GPU. And 10"+ tablets and devices will begin having 4K resolution screens shortly, IMHO, where that will be needed. SnapDragon 800 in a ChromeBook would be fantastic as well.
Hello,
the Tegra 4 SoC do not support OpenGL ES 3.0 fully.
If you want to enjoy AAA games or apps in the near future you might not be able to do so.
Also most of the recent Tegra SoC had bad sound quality through headphones and tend to overheat.
Best regards,
pootney

However, we don't know what KeyLimePie will bring this fall. What is overkill now may be barely cutting it on a new OS.
i use to be all about tegra myself but tegra is not all that good. battery life is horrible and there are heat issues, the htc one x i had got pretty freaking hot. i wanted a tegra 4 tablet like the new toshiba excite but for $480<==F that. i already spent $400 for preordering my ps4 so im not gonna spend that kind of money on a tablet. Nexus 7 is perfect and lightweight. its $270 i can run android games and emulators. with a rooted nexus 7 you can bluetooth a ps3 controller to it for those games and emulators. plus it runs the default android OS which is the best OS out there. The nexus 7 will have a lot more support from devs for kernels, roms, mods, etc...... Seriously buy a nexus 7 and with the money, give it a nice case. kernels for this device can OC the cpu/gpu as well.

No, I don't THINK that will happen, but let's be honest. 95% of devices won't get KLP anyways. I'm not saying it wont run it, just that the overkill may not be overkill in 5 months. History says otherwise, but look at apple updates. Sometimes the new releases run like crap on older devices.

I've played many games for many hours with my Infinity connected to my TV, and using a PS3 controller and the Sixaxis app. Never an issue or hiccup of any kind what so ever!! It also has the best looking display on ANY device in my opinion!

I assure you, I have PLENTY of Tegra device experience. Moto Xoom, LG G2x, Nexus 7, Droid X2, HTC One X+, development in general for all devices. Believe me when I say, nVidia says things work one way, and more often than not, they don't. They require a LOT of extra development workarounds and time to optimize and get them to behave acceptably. I have a feeling that Asus benefited from the Google relationship with the Nexus 7 being a Tegra 3 and applied that knowledge to the rest of their devices. If Asus was willing to spend the time and engineering brains to figure out all those work arounds, kudos to them. Most other manufacturers were not. Even things that are EASY to develop for barely get Android updates, and if theres any sign of it not working right, they just throw in the towel.
The original Nexus 7 worked well, and I'm not saying your Asus tablet doesn't, but the vast majority of nVidia powered devices are not good in the long run.
Check out this article about the history of the way nVidia has dealt with the Tegra chips.

WOW!!!! Apparently you've never heard of or seen the Asus Infinity (10.1" with Tegra 3)!!!! I don't know what you mean about "updates very rarely came". Asus was amongst the first, if not the first, to release 4.2 on the Infinity!! Buggy? Not at alll!!! Games look and play amazing on it!! Has a mini HDMI port on the side of the tablet for connecting it up to a TV. I've played many games for many hours with my Infinity connected to my TV, and using a PS3 controller and the Sixaxis app. Never an issue or hiccup of any kind what so ever!! It also has the best looking display on ANY device in my opinion!
Before dogging all Tegra devices, you REALLY need some hands on experience with them!!!

Tegra Devices in general are just bleh. Video play back always seems lacking. /shrug
Asus will only update their devices once. maybe twice. That isn't support. They only do that as they have a "Life cycle" of their devices. Once reached. Its end of line.
Best display? Lol you lost me there.
The Tegra 4's CPU is equal or better than the SD 800. The Tegra 4's GPU is also equal or better than the Adreno 330.
For those saying that the battery life is horrible - what are you smoking? One of the things the Tegra 3 was lauded for was battery life. Anandtech recorded 18 HOURS of video playback with the Tegra 4 - not even the iPad could touch that.
IMO, the Tegra 4 is a premium SoC. If you really want the latest and greatest, wait for the Tegra 4. Otherwise, the N7v2 will do just fine.
Don't kid yourselves into thinking the Tegra 4 is horrible though...
