Hi all
Just wanting some advice as been looking for ages in play store.
We have been using WhatsApp for our group chat. Love the program but my brother wanted ability to chat on a pc too. He turned us to hookt.me but I'm not a fan. It keeps signing me out, and doesn't show up in android share menu for easy media sharing.
Can anybody recommend a group chat app that is cross platform, can run on pc too (any Internet browser basically), and has the ability to share media?
Thanks in advance
Wilf

why not just go on a IRC network , you can use mIRC on your pc , and there are a few irc clients around for your Android Phone

If you're like me, you regularly forget your data cable at home, in hotels or at the 24-hour Pokemon Trading Card Repository. In such cases, 2011's New App of the Year, AirDroid, is a lifesaver. It's an incredibly comprehensive remote management app that lets you access your Android device via a desktop web browser, complete with file management, app installations, photo browser, and lots more. The creators are ready to step up their game with the second version of AirDroid, and have set up an invite-only beta.
The only feature confirmed by the AirDroid team is the ability to create an account and log into remote management from anywhere, which presumably includes mobile networks. This would mirror various PC remote access services, with the notable exception of actual screen control. Given the amount of polish that the original AirDroid already shows, I'm sure there will be plenty more crammed in as well.
Invites should be going out soon, so sign up if you want to get in. The beta will be three months long, give or take, after which everyone else should be able to join in the party. And if you haven't checked out the original yet, what are you waiting for

The great thing about AirDroid is that it works - it's easy to start up, and functions flawlessly (in my experience). The interface is also very polished - mimicking a desktop launcher complete with moveable icons, a task bar, and controls that allow you to do just about anything.
One of the most impressive features is the ability to access SMS messages, manage them, and send messages right from a web browser. Users can also manage contacts, uninstall/backup apps (AirDroid will download your apps as apk files), browse files, access the Android Market, and manage music and ringtones, in addition to the ability to look at phone information from CPU status to battery level and beyond.
Best of all, AirDroid is completely free from the Android Market. With all the powerful features it offers, this app is certainly worth checking out.

i am using airdroid a lot at home, because it is working very good and very fast and the UI is very good, but the only problem in my opinion is that you need to connect to a shared wifi net....is there any program witch uses the WIFI direct function of the samsung galaxy s2 or that i can log in into a adhoc network?

What I would like to be able to do, is control my phone that is connected to wifi through work's connection, with my desktop which is connected to a different network, that way i'm not constantly looking like i'm on my phone all the time

Hello,
What do think about them? I feel they are almost the same... can I disable talk and keep only messenger? Have any one tried that?

I wish G+ messenger had the same ICS style UI as GTalk . But on G+ you can text pics and use hangouts. The only thing I don't like about G+ messenger is there is no led notification which GTalk has.

I don't see why Google doesn't just unify all of its messaging services (Google voice/talk and g+ messenger) into one service. Hopefully that's where it's heading.

I've been talking about this with my friends for the longest time. The fact that GTalk can't send files is a kind of a huge issue for me as other wise its a great service. What I would love to see Google do is take a kind of Apple approach to it.. One messaging app that can text from your phones number or your Google voice number as you so designate, and, if the person your messaging is likewise using an Android 4.0.x and above platform, it would automatically send via data with higher limits to what you could send as opposed to text, and it would link to video calls and hangouts and such like GTalk and Messenger, can send files other than pictures.
Basically, one unified messenger to rule them all. I am not a huge apple fan, but I like the concept of iMessage and I know that if El Goog took the time to make it so, they could unify their services into one glorious messaging platform.

Unfortunately they are very different. Messenger is mobile only and requires the user have the G+ app but it does offer more features. GTalk allows you to message anyone on an Android or through the web on Gmail or G+. They really need to merge these messaging services into one as it is very confusing.

Google just bought Meebo so I would assume we will see some improvements in this area later this year or early next year at the latest. They have to know their current implementation is not very good.
I'm confused. The GTalk and GChat programs on a PC have been able to send files for years. And on the phone neither GTalk or G+ Messenger can send files, so I'm not sure where that comparison came from.
To share large files (or 300 photos) just toss them on Google Drive or Dropbox. I haven't checked, but there's also probably an app to take advantage of Wifi-Direct to "beam" it locally.
Also, G+ messenger doesn't have a standalone PC application. That is no good for unifying. I use the PC app at home/work, and phone app elsewhere. Having to keep your browser open to chat is a real nuisance IMHO.

However the GTalk client on Android does not allow for sending any files whatsoever. And while yes you could use drop box or drive or others as a workaround, what I'm saying is that including that support on the Android Platform app would be amazing. And a huge incentive to use it over regular texting.

There is nothing better than a good ticket:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=43010
maybe if it's starred enough google will be pushed to finally make it happen? I would love to see the integration, in the gtalk UI with additional features like sending files/pictures and improved notifications ( http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=43009 )

Thanks. That would be nice to get this some traction. There were actually already some articles pointing out the issue but those faded away without any impact.
Nevertheless - it can't be ruled out that google is already working on this (*fingers crossed*)
I prefer Gtalk being left alone. Also I don't know why but Google keeps adding random people to my g+ messenger contact list. They are not on my circles either.

maybe you have added them as following? Had same problem but then I went to chat -> privacy settings and selected "my circles" and in g+ settings I selected only a few close circles as "my circles" and actually the list is waaay shorter (and is basically the same as in gtalk).
Hello there!
My name is George, I am an amateur develeper and I would like your feedback on my application!
I've developed an app called Social_Geek. The app is designed to do the following
1) Lets you create a profile that can be retrived be others who have installed the same app and are in close proximity (bluetooth).
2) Lets you scan for other Social_Geek users to check their profiles, kinda like a local social network.
All these happen via bluetooth.
Check it out and tell me what you think, if you've encountered any bugs or simply your opinion!!
Thanks!

Really bye bye WhatsApp? I don't think so. WA has a huge user base thats just getting bigger and bigger. I haven't saw that much of user base on any other Messaging Apps. May be Line? Its hard to convince people to use other messaging app rather than their prefered one. They usually don't do it or gives up after trying for some days. It happened for me when BBM launches. I volunteerly used it. But non of friends are using it. Same happens with Viber and WeChat.

Telegram is written by Nikolai Durov, money was given from his brother Pavel Durov, "founder" of Russian Facebook clone vkontakte (vk.com). The biggest base of pron, pirated music and videos, if you miss any mp3 you gonna find it on vk. (Not a promotion just a fact)
In the faq they tell if there is no more money they add donation option or introduce paid client with minimum new features compared to very free version.
But if you can imagine how much money zuckerberg has, you can multiply that amount by 2 or 3 and you get the money Durov has...
Their goal is to make a 100% free and secure instant messaging service.
The money isn't a problem for this project
I will give it a try, it is free and now that facebook bites whatsapp there is a privacy risk. They said not but I don't think facebook can be trustful in those questions.
