Hello everyone!
My recent decision on upgrading my phone has brought up some questions. I've been looking around and found a few (very good?) deals, one of them being of course HTC Desire (used, 3 months of warranty left) and the other one ZTE Blade (brand new). With both having the same price tag I just can't seem to decide, the Desire seems to have it all: faster processing, more RAM, better camera along with 720p video recording, USB host mode and a known brand name. What puts me off is the relatively average screen size considering my current 3.2" and the Blade's 4.3", and the warranty time I would have left.
Thanks for following so far, it's time for the final questions. Which one would you consider more reasonable in the long run? Have you ever struggled with typing on the Desire? Would it be a pain watching a movie and browsing some web every now and then? Have you perhaps tried both of these phones?
Thank you very much for helping a fellow out here!
Imo desire is still a great smartphone. I don't feel the need to buy a new phone yet.
If you HAVE to choose between those phones, get the Desire. The MIUI-XJ ROM mentioned above is TOP NOTCH, and I've been using my phone INTENSIVLEY for the last 2 years. However, I would really consider more up to date phones if your budget allows for it. Rather pay just a liiiiitle bit more, than being stuck with a phone that is great, but can't keep up with the new boys.(I can not install Google Chrome, for example).
Movie-wise, the screen is just fine.
Hope that helps a bit.
hey, i previously owned zte phones, first was blade (not 4.3 inch screen but 3.5) then was skate with 4.3 screen. i know all the differences of these two between desire. if this place were modaco forum i would recomend you geting desire instead.
the main advantages are phone's basics: screen feels much more better, precise, faster response and real glass instead of half plastic (i did stop using screen protector which was habit of mine for two years too)
second thing is housing, blade feels like egg shell when compared.
headphones output louder, and no annoying hiss. cpu desire is arm7 vs arm6. and menu keys feels more comfortable, not so noisy.
devs support better too, lots of good roms to choose from!
As for typing or browsing we all know bigger screens have advantage, skate is better here.
you should also give a look for desire s, it has more internal memory for apps, so worth paying more.

My only objection to the OP is the 720p recording, that is a joke literally on the desire, even in stock rom. Other than that, it still is a great phone (at least for me).
Thanks for the input!
I would get a more recent phone, but having the budget set to 120 euros (148 USD) I just can't seem to find any better deals than these two. Although having had a LG phone (GW620 to be more precise - just horrible multitasking) for a year and a half, I think the Desire can keep me floating for a while.
I'm aware that the 720p recording is more likely a joke, but compared to Skate the camera still seems a lot better (nice for occasional OCR for instance).
Since I do some cycling, running and hiking, sometimes not having a wall plug for a day, another important fact to consider is the battery life and power consumption. Having used a Hero not too long ago, I measured the power consumption when fully charged (above 90% as I've learned HTC's charging mechanism to work) and on USB power pack, which was just 200 mA compared to LG's (despite the "Fully charged" notice) near 700 mA.
Thank you again for all the great help!
I bought my Desire (PVT4 SLCD) back in November 2010. And after rooting and flashing some custom ROMs from the dev forum, I really dont feel like buying a new phone. So yeah, the Desire is still worth it IMO. If you're not that inclined to the NFC feature then the Desire is not a bad choice IMO.

Hi, I have been offerred this phone free on an upgrade for my HTC touch HD, is this a decent enough upgrade, how does it compare to the HD2?
I have read lots of reviews but lot of them conflict each other, my main areas of concern are as follows:
1. What is the battery life actually like?
2. Is the screen as bad as people say in daylight?
3. What is the camera quality like for stills?
4. Has there been any offical announcments about the DIVX / 720p video recording update?
5. Is there a decent video player comparable to Coreplayer which supports muliple codecs?
Thanks
1. Not the best, but good enough. I use the device pretty heavily and it gets down to about 15% by the end of the day. Light usage can probably last 2 days.
2. It's as good as any other AMOLED device.
3. Pretty good. Low-light shots are not that great. LED flash helps but often it's either not bright enough or the shots get washed out.
4. No
5. Not sure. But I personally prefer to encode my videos so that the default player can accept it.
Thanks,much appreciated.
The developer community for the HD2 is comparatively erm, developed at the moment. Obviously it's still early days, but seeing as the Nexus One tends to be the modder's choice of phone, like the HD2 is for WinMo, I think the Desire will always be in the Shadow of the Nexus to an extent.
A friend with an HD2 struggles to make his last the whole day. He always carries a spare battery. The HD2's screen is very nice, but side by side with the Desire, everything seems washed out and the advantages of AMOLED are clear. Outdoors in sunglight the Desire's screen is poor but not unusable. Using my phone outdoors has never caused me any major problems. I would say the HD2 is more aesthetically pleasing device overall and more customisable at this stage, but with 2.2 almost certainly coming to the device, I think the Desire is a sound choice and don't regret buying it.
I've got an HD2 and I used to cook ROMs for it - WinMo is easier to get your head around than Android IMO - and the community is more developed as WinMo has been around longer. However, I prefer the Desire as the size is better (HD2 is nice but it's huge!!) and it runs better out the box. My HD2 was only good after I'd played about with it
Hardware wise they are very similar. 1ghz Snapdragon, 576 memory. The HD2 has a massive 4.3 inch screen compared to the Desire's 3.7 inch... Put pretty much any phone next to the Desire though and the Desire will make the other phone's screen look quite poor. The clarity and color on the Desire is just... well... it blows any other phone out of the water as far as screen quality. The camera I have found is quite good. The low lights though can sometimes get washed out, but I have found that is an issue even on normal cameras so not really here or there. The phone over all is pretty good. The battery life is kind of sporadic, it really depends on what you do with it, and what you have going. Sometimes it can last days without dropping below 50%, other times I find it dropping like 10% every 20 minutes. I am thinking 2.2 will help out with battery life a bit... and the longer I have the phone the better the battery life seems to get. Between the two devices, it pretty much comes down to which operating system you prefer. I dislike Windows Mobile, and like Android. They are similar phones spec wise, the only thing the HD2 has over the Desire is screen size, and even then the HD2 screen is no where near as nice as the Desire's. If you do want/need the massive size, you could wait for the HTC Supersonic to come out. It's basically an HD2 with Android.
I briefly bought a few phones before settling for the desire. All I can say is its like the leatherman of phones. You just have to hold one of these things & you won't look back
I had lots of smart phones in the past, mainly Win Mobile ones and then deflected over to the other side (iPhone). Not going to get into a debate what is better, but the in my opinion iPhone was and still is a great device. The new iPhone will be even better.
Saying that, I went for this device because it was much more configurable and has much more potential without "jail breaking" etc.
Compared to other devices I'm still impressed about the speed, responsiveness and generally it has been much more "bug free" than any smart phone I have owned in the past and I've owned a lot. I have not had it reboot on me once yet (2 weeks of solid use).
I have a few forced closure of apps but that's an app issue. What made the iPhone great was the apps that was written especially for the iPhone and hopefully the android market will reach that same heights in the future.
Battery life is not great, but I've never had a smart phone last more that a day without charge, but I use it a lot during my train journey into work and have push email, plus other data intensive apps. I bought this phone to give me all this functionality and I find no point in trying to get more than a day if I have to sacrifice not being able to use the phone to its full potential.
Screen is good, nice and crisp. I don't watch movies on the phone, but I encoding it would be better to have it in a resolution suitable for the phone.
In conclusion, I think this phone is worth it, I don't regret buying it and not looking to buy anything else, until....... iPhone 4g.
Thanks again everyone for your comments, these have been really helpful.
well my upgrade is due and ive been offered either devices , ive looked at them in store but really having a hard time deciding. Im not sure about samsungs touchwiz but the design and the quality of the screen really shines .... i was very impressed.
I had a look at the sensation and again i really like the phone however im not keen on the new sense the lock ring is nice but the rest of it does not feel right. One example would be on sense 2.1 my music player intergrated into lock screen on the new sense its like a block in middle of screen which seems untidy same with low battery. However i do like my htc widgets news mail etc ..... which samsung doesent have.
Another thing that concerned me which i havent seen anyone mention in reviews is that the lcds on the sensation suffer from ghosting imagage lag very much like lcds in tellys some years ago, however the improved resolution is a nice touch.
That being said my htc desire has served me well and with the support of the community here it still feels like a great phone i goes part of my decision would be based on which phone has the most support here in the future
Has anyone upgraded to either of these phones over there htc desire and if so what are your initial impression(s) did you keep phone sell on etc would very much like to hear .......
baadnewz (desire developer) upgraded to SGS II but then he sold it and bought sensastion - he said that he couldnt make it without Sense.
I think touchwiz is hopeless
But on another topic I think you're bound to find more support for the Sensation
Sent from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA App
Neophyte has activated himself under sgs2 development. I think per specification sgs with it's Orion snaps anything Qualcomm has come up with atm in half. But it is really poor when it comes to overall feeling of quality and robustness. Sensation is much more robust and you see on the glance it is a premium product, though it is quite understandable that you were impressed with samoled. Last week I was talking to a clerk here at my provider's authorized dealer, I couldn't lift my eyes from it. Must be I left an impression of being extremely rude.
I'd get a Sensation now, but I'll skip this first generation while keeping a close eye where the Desire developers are in the future
I'm skipping too - keeping the Desire, see where things go with the next gen.
ICS and possible quad cores next year will be the next step I think for me, hopefully also with mega improved battery

I doubt about battery. When you look back to where we were in 1999 when we had 900mAh Li-ion, and that in 2011 we have 1400mAh on average, it is clear we stagnated most of the time. I hope so too, but I think it is not possible using current technology and materials, while keeping the same form factor.
Galaxy S:
more RAM, more internal memory, better screen contrast, lower screen resolution, better screen viewing angle, lighter, thinner, Touchwiz, cheap plastic body.
Sensation:
less RAM, less internal memory, lower screen contrast, higher screen resolution, less screen viewing angle, heavier, thicker, Sense 3.0, aluminium body.
Those are my brief comparison for Sensation and SII.
I am also keeping my good old AMOLED Desire and will skip both Sensation and Galaxy SII.
I will be on my way seeking up a new phone again somewhere next year.

lets hope then for better optimization of battery?
I really liked my htc blackstone which could last almost a week without charge...
Hello there.
Im not native english so if i do misstakes please don't be so hard with me.
I want to make a review of my first week after a long life with my HD2.
Prolog: Why change from HD2?
I was on HD2 on the first day it appeared. I liked it very much even with this old fashioned Windows 6.5. Before i was with an Orbit or known as P3300 which gets an free Winmo 6 upgrate after a long life with Winmo 5. I was told that HD2 would get a similar upgrade but as Microsoft changed their rules with the buttons it never came. So i found out that i can Upgrade it myselfe thx to this forum. First i got on WP7 but soon i feeled to much in a cage so i changed after 6 month WP7 expirience to Android Miui. After my Usb port brokes and i needed to use an external device to load my battery i looked around if there is a new phone upcoming to get an upgrade that satisfy me or if i will buy a used HD2 to flash it again. If the One X wasn't upcomming i totaly would have stayed on HD2. It's fast, stable and for what its needed its doing a good job and you don't feel that this old boy is already 3 years old. Maybe it was far beyond its time.
Buy it.
I went to a local media store which i was told get the device on the 4th of april. I was there on 2nd of april and surprise surprise i got one early for 579€ (round about 758 $). So i got home with my new gray One X. The box was smaler than i expected.
Finaly home with my baby.
Unboxing was fast and there i hold it in my hands trying to get in turned on. Didn't work untli I loaded it for about 5 min. But then i hat the first experience with the One X getting ready for its first breath. And it came up fast. I was glad that i could use my old Apps that i bought. As it is my second Android device i didn't know that and i didn't expect it. Set up was fast and easy and soo i got all my old apps and configurations on it. Sense makes still no sense for me but i don't care about it.
Tip for those who came from HD2 too: One X askes you if you want to get your old device data through bluetooth. If you want to make this say that your old tdevice is an HTC Desire. Then it works.
Apps
I hate apps that are preinstalled and not deinstallable. Most of them are usefull some of them are nothing more than an add. Apps i recognized as this and deaktivated them are soundboud and 7digital. Never need them and never will.
Some apps that seem to be a little glitchi on One X are like the Mathon browser. I think there are more glitchi ones and they glitch because of the new software menubutton that apears in some apps which need one. never will understand why they want to get rid of the menu hardkey.
Everything else flawless and smooth.
The feeling and the body.
I can't realy say why but my HD2 seemed to be much more precios. Maybe because of the full glas front and the metal back. I don't realy know.
Theres a little chink around the glas on my One X and espeacialy the one on the top of the displye seemes to be some kind of dirt gatherer. I have to use a little brush every day to clean it, also it looks cheap.
The One X is lighter than the HD2 but bigger. As its thinner too i have no problems to get it in my pocket. Feels good and comfortable as an everyday device.
No SD card sucks. My One X has already only 6gb left. Hope Dropbox will be usefull to compensate this incomprehensible mistake for not build an build in SD card slot.
No Battery exchange. I use myphone much and for everything. As my HD2 gets a lousy battery after 2years i was glad to be able to just buy a new one. I hope this battery has a propper technologie and will last longer than on my HD2. For the usage it lasts enought. I could get along a Day without load and with good usage. I use the atomaticly brightnesscontrol and 2 Hours musik, 2 hours gaming and 1 hour navigate while calling multiple persons din't make it sweat. In the evening it wants some juce with still 30% left. I think this is acaptable for a 4,7 device with 5 cores.
Multitouch
I tested this one because on HD2 it sucks that there is a second point recognised but after that you have to get of your fingers to recognize a new one.
At first i thought "**** only 2 points" but then i found an option whicht told me that its set on recognize just 3 fingers for better control. I turned it of and then i got 10 fingers regocnized. Whats realy nice is that you can touch outside the screen and even over the softkeys and it still keeps tracking your fingers.
Performance
Fast like hell.
Never hat such a fast device that size. Games, espeacialy tegra ones are awesome in there graphics but still there is no good one that impresses me with a good gameplay. Hope there will be more. Camera is fast and good. Pictures are good but not awesome. Flashlight is weak and round about half as bright as it was on HD2. Skype with the frontcamera is good and it was about time to get this usable.
Hot
I think this is normal but on intensive apps make the phone get very warm. It won't burn but never get my HD2 so warm. After taking a bigger video with the cam i realy feelt my One X in my trausers. Nothing to worry about but something you will regocnize too and think about.
Sound.
Good even with the headphones that where in the Box. I don't like that kind of headphones and im more used to inear ones oder that ones that go all over your head but the sound quality is realy good and much better than on the HD2. As the HD2 was good enought for me for hearing music outside this doesn'T realy impress me. But good to have.
Screen
Awesome. Perfect pixel ratio for me . I will never need more. Colours a good and not so overloaded as on the OLED ones. Movies, pictures and websites just look gread. Ebooks are perfect.
Thinks im looking forward to.
Dockingstation. Yes hell i will get one.
Medialink. I realy like to use that for presentations. Hope it will be available soon.
What i miss when i think of my HD2?
Flashlight. It was awsome to use the home button as flashlight. Ok i can use now an app but even then its still just half as bright as on my hd2.
SD Card. Yes that realy sucks.
Hardware buttons. I don't know why everyone likes this softkeys that are only an extention of the touchscreen. I love them when they make click sounds and you feel it clicking.
In the end.
I slowly get used to the One X. Its a great device and the price is worht it. I think going back would be hard. But if my HD2 would broke like that i think i would have stayed there minimum another year or too. I still will load the 3 Batterys i have and use my HD2 as navigation device when im on trekking tours. It's still an device with a right to live.
But now my new One X has a new challenge to show me HTC is still the best company for me when i think about smartphones.
I hope my english was acceptable.
Edit: Insert Hot to the performance part.
Thanks for taking the time doing the review. I would like to hear more from everyday users like you before making a decision. Why only 6gb left on your device ?
It comes with 32gb right ?
I have already have so much music on it and the bigger problem are movies with the native 720p. i only have about 2 movies on it and they are like 4gb each. As it was jsut to test the experience on a television they will not be there everytime but i like to keep 2 or 3 movies there for wasting my time while i wait for a train or something like that.
edit. Yes 32gb stock. But only 25 for data free. Rest is system and apps.
Thanks for taking the time to write the review, I pretty much agree with you on everything, except maybe for it looking cheap, but then I like a minimalist style.
No SD slot is a little frustrating, although in fact, i never actually fully used the 16GB card I had in my Desire, I really like to have the option.
Battery is a concern, my Desire battery survived the 2 years i had it without a problem but it is a worry that if this one does not then it will be expensive to have it replaced. For long journeys I will consider buying an external battery pack.
Thanks again for the review and your English is very good!
2 hrs of gaming?
I lost 20% of the battery just downloading Shadowgun let alone playing it. lol

I realised that the especialy the tegra 3 exsample games are very high draining my battery to. normal ones don't. the glowball demo also ist not very perfect jet. when you drain so much battery while downloading maybe some settings are different.
make sure you download it from wlan. it feels like to get much data from your LTE drains the battery faster.
i didn't only play this was a list what i did on a day normal usage without getting battery to 0%.
Thanks fellow HD2 owner.
I enjoyed your review, but can't agree with on the soft/hardbuttons. I'm so glad I'll have a device with soft buttons... I feel "guilty" when I press HD2 buttons because I always think that I'm wearing them out and that eventually they will fail.
You talked about ebook reading. My One X hasn't arrived yet, so please could you take a picture comparing HD2 and One X on a ebook reader app? I would like to see how much more text One X displays for page. Thanks!

There you are. As you can see the normal PDF view has this software menu button so you can't realy make it fullscreen. think there will be a better app for ebooks but for showing this will be good enought. i tryed to scale both on a letter size i think i can read good. on hd2 you can meke it even smaller but the pixelating will get so high that its not so comfortable to read. even with this high ratio i like the letters bigger but they are sharper an thats the reason why i like reading on my One X. The difference isn't so hig as the HD2 had a very high resolution for its time too. 800x480 compare to 1280x720. still it's not as good as e-ink contrast but as it has a higher res than e-ink this is still a good alternative. Also that the contrast of the screen is more realistic than AMOLED ist good for reading.
The button thing is something that depents on taste. i liked them more but we will se if i get used to the soft ones. This was no real critic of me maybe more an experience i wanted to share.
ps.: yes there is dirt in (not on) my HD2 screen
Thanks lokiderelb! Not the best image though A epub would perhaps been better since there's no difference in zoom, only size letter.
Another question regarding screen size: is One X wider than HD2 or are they roughly the same size? When you go back to HD2 from One X do you think: «Hey, this is small», or it isn't that noticeable?

I know. I hadn't install a reader now so i just wanted to show the pdf version.
When i hold both phones the feeling is better on the One X. Even if its bigger it feels lighter and the screen that shows no gap between glas and screen looks bigger. The X is about 2mm wider with i just don't feel or see. It's about 1cm longer which is positivly noticeable. It's up to 2mm thinner which i notice immensely. The X has not the metal felling which i realy loved but i think i will get used to it because polycarbonate is a much higher quality.
Your review has been very helpfull for all the prospective one x buyers...thanx

I love my HD2 and its build quality, but I tend to hold it long time with just 2 fingers for bed reading and I find the metal feeling and it's weight a little bit unconfortable, so I really hold high expectations for One X in this regard.
P.S.: THANKS for measuring HD2 and One X. I really appreciated.
thanks for the heads up.
I am also planning to migrate from HD2 to One X soon.
I am not so heavy user of internal storage so the microSD shouldn't be an issue for me but mostly likely I gotta buy a portable charger
Thanks a lot man for the great review. I guess that there are a lot of people migrating from the HD2 to the one X .. and this proves that they are both great devices .. but i honestly am gonna miss my HD2 , it is one of the best phones that HTC manufactured.
Thanks for the review lokiderelb, I was a happy HD2 owner for a couple of years myself but I did have a couple of newer HTC phones in between. The HD2 was ahead of its time and I feel the same way about the One X, I can't see another phone beating it out for best mobile phone on the planet any time soon
Are you guys going or have already sold your HD2?
I will only do it if besides One X I also get GNote/Titan. But I'll probably keep my HD2. It's just to great to sell.
I am like you moving from HD2 to One X. I am expecting my device after Easter. I don't use SD card much and I think lack of SD expansion slot not going to make much difference for me.
I hope we will have some instructions/videos to replace the internal battery before we go to that stage of every 6 hours charging.
I will keep my HD2. Also its a little broken cause of the not funktional usb port and the little dirt behind the screen, which comes from a not so lucky try to repair it by myselfe. I have 3 Batterys for the HD2 and i think i can take it for trekking tours. Its resistable and it s awsome for navigation and my new One X will be happy to stay at home when im going trought the dirt.
Hey guys, first of all I'd like to apologize for posting a question thread in a general section.
I've had EVO 3D GSM for almost a year (9 dec 2011 is a date of purchase) and now it is time to move on. Poor baby was a victim of numerous experiments, including dangerous ones. Evo 3D brought me into android ROM development and I really, really love this phone. But it has lots of marks and scratches, aluminium rim is bent, battery doesn't last longer than 4 hours, digitizer is almost dead, registering random touches while the phone is sitting on the desk not being touched by anyone, sometimes there's an opposite situation: you can lean your whole capacitive corpse on the screen and it wouldn't even suspect anything.
Recently I've got Nexus 4 16gig from my friends for a couple weeks of testing. I was excited as duck, brand new google nexus phone blah blah blah... It ended up being returned to where it came from. Surprisingly, I didn't like it at all. It looks very nice, the glass on the screen is very thin, the glass on the back looks classy, it weights like a solid phone not like a cheap-o toxic chinese toy (this is a perfect description for GNexus' weight IMO). But... Touchscreen responsiveness is awful. I mean, yes, it's better than my iPAQ PPC bought back in 2003, but come on, even the possessed digitizer on my e3d is capable of registering touches more accurately and hell of a lot faster. The glass panel on the back looks sexy, but it is ducking slippery! A couple days ago n4 just slipped away from my hands in the subway, it was saved by the god himself and by tight 3.5mm headphone jack. And, of course, 16gb is not enough at all.
Enough of that, I suppose. The question is, is the One X a good thing to switch to? Are there any problems with this sexy phone, are there any disappointments waiting for me after purchasing the One X?
And another question, is the One X+ that much better than OX? In my region the price difference is above $300, I don't want to waste any money on some useless stuff.
Thanks in advance, folks. My daily driver smartphone is a very important part of my life, and I don't want to rush.
And if you think that One X isn't a good thing to have, which android smartphone would you suggest?
It is onex forum. So yeah, I can definitely recommend this phone as I am using it since April and still love it, I don't even think about upgrading any time soon.
Some people may tell you wait till new phones are introduced which is happening pretty soon, just couple of months. But if wait for a phone you can spend all your life for waiting for a perfect phone without having one

@ the right price, I think you can't go wrong with the HOX. IMO the X+ isn't worth the price diference.
Comparing it to its arch rival (SIII), i think the HOX, with its amazing looks and Sense will always win the day. But thats in my case, I really like sense... (some love it, some hate it)
And now that I've bought a Tablet, the HOX battery is just right for me, since the everyday usage as dropped a little.
Adding that to being unbrickable (no S-OFF) and the absolutely awsome support here in XDA, its just great for a stock (or not to adventurous) folk like me.
Wrapping up, I think it is one of the best daily driver smartphone: great looks and feel, awsome Sense experience, and (at least in my circle) its really exclusive and as the WOW effect.
I upgraded from the EVO 3d to one x and I am disappointed its little to nowhere faster at most things, though the camera is miles better I think beats is a huge step down from srs equalizer too its not as good. Imho I'd wish I had stuck it out and waited for HTC's next big flagship, luckily I can pay for early upgrade lol p.s. iv had to send my one x for repair already too once as has my friend with his where as my EVO got thrown dropped dunked and all without any faults. The only things I much prefer are the hdspa speed increase, the great camera, the immense screen is great too, and the feel of the device is great. But deffo go one x + if your going to make it a one range

Beats and SRS are just stock equalizers with fixed preset. Yes, there may be some good audio chip or something, but come on, I'm using PowerAMP atm and I have a custom preset for every song in my playlist. Idc about beats or srs. So despite that the only thing that disappointed you after switching from e3d is the fact that one x turned out to be less stress-resistable in a single occasion?

Could you tell me a little more about HOX+? I'm aware of the fact that its CPU is overclocked a bit, and it has 64gig of memory (which is twice as much as I need), and it has some badass red styling, but despite all that, is there really any significant difference?

I just used it for a little, and the main edge for me was the 4.1 in it. Now that the JB update is finally rolling out for the HOX, that edge is gone (I repeat, this is just my opinion). I prefer the HOX Styling (really disliked the red capacitive buttons).
And pairing that to the fact that the price diference is quite large, paying so much for an incremental update doesn't make sense to me.
The Tegra 3's newer version and the 64Gb of storage are not worth the extra cash IMO. As the real world tasks and usage are just as great on one handset as on the other...

Lol, the only thing that I could've been thinking of after seeing red capacitive buttons on Sensation XE was "WHYYY~"
Well that's enough for me. One X it is, just placed an order for a sexy white 32gig version
Thanks to everybody who answered

Hi,
in MY OPINION, I think it's a good change, i've tooked the same path, owner of HTC EVO 3D for almost a year with almost the same problems as you, and now at 1 week ago changed for this ONE X, I did not went for HTC ONE X+, because it does not compensate the money, I'm very happy with the phone.
Go for it.

Well in that case, high five
Also guys, a very quick question: I've just heard that it is possible that white HOX comes in several finishes, including 100% gloss and 100% satin. Is it true? It doesn't seem to be true though...

No not just the eq, it's more the whole package. Also I hate that YouTube stutters at times, no matter if the video is fully buffered or not, audio also stops when a notification noise comes on which is poor, don't get me wrong its great phone and I wouldn't have anything else but the one x+ at this present time, but from my view the jelly bean update adding USB otg and non moving wallpaper when moving screens is a big step forward, so it's a good choice if you need a phone at the present time and won't wait to get one

Hello,
I am evaluating purchasing an used HTC M9. The price seems to be a real bargain (around 60€), but I am worried that it is still a too old device to be enjoyable.
I own an iPhone 7 Plus now and I said myself numerous times that I would never switch back to Android, but I had lot of fun with Android ROMs years ago and I feel like I would love to try again.
I had both HTC m7 and m8 devices and loved it (more the M7 than the M8 actually). How does the M9 feels like?
How would it work after these years? I will not use it to play games, but I will make phone calls, internet browsing, messaging and lot of normal-light usage.
What is your suggestion? How does your M9 feels like after all these years?
Well, by now, the HTC M9 still has respectable development here on XDA. the SD810 feels hot by the heavy use, but it's not dangerous... the phone doesn't have official updates anymore, keep in mind that, still the phone runs great and the Sense UI is one of the fastest UIs around... it has 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and you can put more space with the microSD, so storage wouldn't be a problem, you will find cheap cases on internet, even the Otterbox Defender is like $7 USD on ebay.
The HTC M9 is like a M8 with steroids...
I've just moved to this phone from a Google pixel after it's untimely death ( kid broke it :'( )and I'm happy with it. Performance wise it's fine and I've only noticed a drop in performance on one game. I also flashed a different ROM without sense and got it just the way I like.
Edit: I thought I would add I have always loved the build quality on HTC devices and this one is just as good. Mine is an old phone my wife used for years and she does not look after them. It's full of dints and scrapes and has been very wet and still works perfect. Even the screen is remarkably scratch free.
€60 is a good price, I've just paid €150 for one, although mine was in mint condition and came with s-off.
My wife is still using my M7 that's still going strong after I replaced it with a Sony Z3 (far too fragile for my lifestyle) and then a Moto X Force (lovely phone just has ribbon cable issues with the OLED)
Only slight gripes are the sound quality in Lineageos, so gone back to stock Nougat, a case is essential if you want it to keep it's sexy looks
All said and done, the 810 is a disastrous chip which gets very hot and has a pathetic on-screen battery life.
for me at that price is a good phone, powerful and fast.
There are no overheating problems (at least with last firmware) and the defined disastrous processor is very powerful even if energivorous.
certainly a disastrous purchase at full price but at that price in my opinion is not despicable
Better get a refurbished HTC 10 @ ebay.
Sure not to get M9 is 2018, the battery life, camera, S810 is nor very well. Maybe you can try other budget phone.
Camera is NO good on the M9!!!

G'day mate,
I would give the M9 a wide girth if you have any interest in using it to take photos. It has an impressive 20M camera, but no ability to focus, and take good shots. Here is a post that I made some time ago on the subject.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/help/photo-quality-m9-poor-compared-to-t3385288
I have three beautiful daughters, and the inability of this phone to take good photos of them lead me to purchase an Oppo A77. There are may good Android phones in the AU$300 (~EU$180) range. Oppo is an excellent brand to start with, however if you take this path be aware that you need to tinker with it a bit to get standard notifications; check out my Oppo post here -
https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/enabling-push-notifications-oppo-a77-t3748639
Good luck mate, I would say "Happy Hunting", but as I believe in peace on earth I will settle with "May you reach your dreams, even if they encompass the stars themselves!"
Cheers
Davo
For that price and just to play around with it, totally.
But the first thing you should do if you get one would be to go to a service, open it up and clean the dust from the speaker grille.
Or try at home with a toothbrush and a vacuum cleaner. (This is what i personally do, but there is clearly still dust in there because the sound is still cracking at high volume. Plus, dust particles still fly away from the speaker, even after cleaning, if i turn the volume all the way up)
But if you clean it professionally, it has an incredible speaker setup.
Camera now. The Nougat 7.0 update made the camwra usable in low light. (You could try to find the link for SunDream's 7.1.2 S.ROM because is clearly the best Sense-based ROM around here. And also the only one that also raised the API level by 1 over the OTA limit.)
Like, is incredible how much right that one update did... But you lose the 9 seconds of exposure time from the "More Light More Fun" Mod (or something between those lines. Somebody posted the link in this thread anyway).
Anyway, (5.1.1 MLMF + Luma Denoise. What i currently use) in daytime and slightly less than perfect light conditions, the camera performs really good.
The bokeh effect is amazing, like the edge detection is on point. It detects those hair strings like magic.
I did a bokeh test on a moving pine tree branch, and it got all the pins right.
Not a single one got blurred over.
I tried it against the Note 8, the S9+ and the iPhone X (stuff that my classmates have) and beat all of them at edge detection from my personal tests.
The others struggle with reflective surfaces from what i observed.
Anyway, performance.
Good. Doesnt slow down over time.
Never cleaned dalvik, never zipaligned, never optimized databases, never installed a new ROM.
I challenged myself to use it with what it had installed (in my case, the update right before 6.0.1).
It can still play PUBG just fine on HD settings... For like 10 minutes because it heats up and throttles.
But older games work just fine on the highest settings.
Screen. If you can ignore the fact that black is some sort of very dark blue, is ok.
You can play VR with it just fine. You wont notice the pixels.
Also, if you set it on Automatic, it actually goes darker than the lowest brightness setting.
(Also, activating the brightness slider from the customization file still doesnt make it darker than Auto Brightness.)
IR is really useful, imo.
Headphone sound was really good for it's time, but it's still just a 24-bit DAC.
Bluetooth is just AptX and you can feel the compression.
But still enjoyable with Viper FX.
I think you can patch AptX HD tho...
Also if i remeber correctly there is a mod that makes the speakers louder.
And finally Dolby Digital Surround 5.1 is very realistic... If the speakers are clean.
Done. Would i recommend it in 2018?
As a secondary phone, totally.
Would a Butterfly 3 be better? Obviously, if you dont care that much about ROMs and customization. (It has water resistance and dual cameras.)
So... For 60$. Have fun. Install as many ROMs you want.
(Also a good time to buy one because MIUI finally got released, so you have a very wide sellection of ROMs.)
