Hi all,
I am struggling with an issue that pretty much makes the Kindle Fire useless for my usage.
Basically the KF will be carried around by users - who will be alerted by a sound from the Kindle Fire when it received a message over WiFi.
Problem is, I cannot get the WiFi to stay reliably connected when the screen turns off.
I have tried WiFi Keep Awake - with limited success. It helps some of the time, but is unreliable.
To test this, I am simply pinging the KF from a PC - and in many instances it refuses to respond. Using WiFi Keep Alive I have even found it not rejoin the WiFi reliably once the screen is turned on.
This is essential for what I need - and I find it bizaare as well if you wanted to use for email etc that it seems to drop off.
So - firstly, has anyone solved this without installing a custom ROM?
Secondly, can it be solved with a custom ROM (maybe stock Android)?
Any help appreciated!
Thanks
I would definitely try a custom ROM. Most of the ROMs here are rock solid. Also I would try this app. It's free so you can sideload it if you don't have the Play Store.
The ROMs I've used that have the most stability are Gederom v1.7, CM9 SGT7 based ROM by twa_priv, and CM10 SGT7 based ROM by twa_priv.
Thanks - will give that app a try.
I want to avoid a custom ROM if I can........

Hello XDA!
I've been lurking here for about six months waiting for CM9 w/ HWA to drop for my kindle fire since christmas, and I have to say now that it's here:
Huge thanks to hashcode for getting Kernel 3/HWA working, and NRGZ28 for the wonderful Energy ROM!
I would be posting this as a reply to their respective threads, but I am classified as a xda noob, so here I am.
Issues Surmounted:
KF Utility: Weird errors about disk being full
Turned out this is a conflict with cygwin, there was another find.exe on the %PATH%. Fix: Replace all references to find with absolute path.
Post-flash infinite boot animation
First time I tried, the KF got stuck in a boot animation loop for about 15 minutes, I reflashed the same file and it only looped for about 60 seconds, followed by glorious CM9
KF not listed under `adb devices`
Even if your driver appears to be working in Device Manager, it could be the wrong driver! I kept installing the 'Android ADB Interface' driver, but I didn't get anywhere until I changed to the 'USB Composite Device' driver after which a 'Android Composite ADB Interface' magically appeared and I regained adb control!
Android Keyboard has stopped
adb install [go keyboard apk]
WiFi not receiving an IP
RTFMFTW: fix-mac.sh!!!
Flaky WiFi Disconnecting
Used 'CPU Tuner' to set governing profiles that maxed at 1008 MHz instead of 1200 MHz. Not exactly sure if this was the cause, but the wifi seems much more stable now and I get better battery life! Win Win!
I'm hoping some of ^those^ might help somebody get going a bit faster.
Issues Outstanding:
Netflix
I can run the app but when I start a video it buffers and then shows a lovely black screen and sits there. As anyone else had/resolved this issue? I've read that other people have problems with the netflix app force quiting, but this seems to be a separate issue.
No awareness of Battery Charging State in ICS
Although the OS doesn't seem to know when charging is happening, it certainly is happening, and I seem to be getting accurate battery percentages so this is functionally a non-issue. (I know this is a known bug, but I wanted to report that it wasn't as painful for me as some had been saying).
Random Reboot
This only happened once, not sure if it's going to be an ongoing thing but the kindle seemed to just reboot abruptly without being told to despite it not being actively fondled at the time
WiFi Geolocation
I enabled this in settings but Google Maps doesn't get any geo info at all
My kindle is now able to successfully play a 720p x264 MKV natively with hardware acceleration playing directly from a mounted CIFS share over WiFi.
THIS IS INSANELY AMAZING.
I did have to enable software decoding for the audio, but who cares, IT WORKS!
I used CifsManager & MX Player, and am hoping to find a SSHFS client for when I'm not on my LAN.
Is the source for EnergyROM available somewhere?
I'd really like to take this great ROM and start tweaking it.
I'm want to extend the range of the brightness slider in settings to go all the way down to 1 instead of stopping at a min of 30.
Right now I am using RootDim[Root] to acheive the desired effect (dim the actual backlight, not the colors), but it's far from elegant.
Has someone already done this? If so I'd like to hear about it, and if not I want to try and contribute.
THANKS XDA, the CM9 guys and specifically the devs who tweak/compile/package/distribute these ROMs so generously.
You've made my wildest (affordable tablet based) dreams come true.
TLDR: Everything important is made of diamonds; can I get the source for EnergyROM?

I Know this isn't what you are asking, but I can tell you I *DO NOT* have all the issues you mentioned with a different flavor ICS ROM. I'm running gedeROM and the only items I get is:
- Random wifi disconnects when waking back up. A simple switching of the wifi on/off fixes it every time
- Charging state shows incorrectly, but it charges
Everything else seems to work pretty perfectly. You might consider giving it a try.
Kindle Fire - [ROM][AOSP][10/10/2012] Jelly Bean Tablet Edition aka Project Jandycane - hanging/freezing
Last year I rooted to Jelly Bean Tablet Edition aka Project Jandycane - 0xD34D and also later updated to version 1.8
I was happy enough with this 1.8 version but recently I am starting to have problems with hanging/freezing.
I have password activated so after Kindle/Android loading I always get the password screen, while at the same time AVAST antivirus loads. This was never a problem, until last few months.
The screen started to hang/freeze in this last phase.
I noticed that although password text marker was blinking as soon as I tapped on it to enter my password, the system would freeze (without loading the keyboard) - at the same time I noticed that AVAST was not loaded.
This only happened on rare occasions at first, but is now more often.
Additionally, I now get hanging freezing when I am in Settings, and to get out of this I have to switch power off - but I have trouble switching it back on. I have to press several times, sometimes the screen stays black, sometimes I see very briefly and very vaguely, the last screen that was there before switching power off (this appears and disappears very briefly in the black screen). After several tries I usually get back to the password page (with keyboard loaded) - and then everything usually works okay again.
Sometimes i get a message (something like) "system is not responding close it".
The same with Password screen where the problem originally started. I have to switch power off, and after a couple of tries switching power back on, I eventually succeed, and usually the password screen appears with the keyboard now loaded and I can enter my password - and everything is okay. Sometimes I got the message "Trebuchet is not responding - close it"
At first I thought the problem was with Trebuchet, now I am not too sure because it is now also happening in Settings - and whatever it is, it is getting worse and more frequently!
anybody have this problem, or know what causes it?
and is jandycane now a finished project (no more updates) - should I run another ROM now (if I can remember how I did it without destroying my Kindle altogether!)
JandyCane is a buggy ROM, always has been. Your best bet for an almost trouble-free solution is to install the Hashcode's pure AOSP Jelly Bean 4.2.2. If you need assistance, just pm me.

Thanks damystica for your great and kind reply!
To be honest I thought jandycane was a stable ROM, but after this hanging business I think maybe you are right. Today I switched off the password option to see if I still get this hanging (which happened again today by password).
But probably I should now change the ROM to the one you suggest. I have just been a little afraid of messing about trying to change the ROM in case I screw up and destroy my Kindle (which I find extremely useful and I don’t want to lose).
But the kindle is already rooted so I guess it is not that big of a deal to just change the ROM, or?
So thanks I will take up your offer and get in touch for help/guidance how I should go about this.
But maybe I should wait for the 3.4 kernel before doing this (whatever that is)?

Ever since I use the Llama app (Location Aware Mobile Application)on my i9195 (Carbon ROM 4.4.2) I have the problem that Llama doesn't receive cell tower information when the screen is turned off. This is a major feature of the app, which doesn't work. I activated the active cell polling, wake up during sleep etc, but the only thing working is to activate the screen during every poll, which is not favorable of course.
The thing is, that with my previous Huawei Y300, with stock ROM 4.1.2 it worked flawlessly without having to enable all the extra (battery consuming) settings. Unfortunately I don't know if the stock Samsung ROM didn't have this bad behavior since I booted the original ROM only once to enable root, in order to instal CWM recovery
Would this be a ROM issue or device issue? Too bad this is my first post here and therefore I can't post in the dev. section of Carbon ROM on this website :crying:
Has nobody issues with Llama on this device/ROM? The location awareness is really adding something to the use of the phone. Really too bad that I have to turn the screen on, before Llama realizes that I am at another location.
I love Llama, it's a great app which allows me to set it and forget it. I love not having to remember to turn radios on/off, muting phone at college or work.
I had to uninstall it because I switched carriers, and with the new one I keep getting "1-1-1-1 No signal" on the Recent towers tab. It's intermittent (once every detected tower) and it had my profiles going nuts.
I also was experiencing issues where my phone would freeze until it forced a reboot almost every time I got back home.
Sounds like your current ROM might be to blame. I suggest you try Llama with the stock rom. I for one prefer stock with Action Launcher. You might lose the added features of the custom ROM, but at least Samsung's camera interface is way better than AOSP, at least to my taste and needs.

Thanks, luckily I don't have any of your issues so far, only the cell tower updates being delayed until the screen turns on. A few posts away from now I can ask the question in the specific ROM forum and see if they can fix it.I love the ROM and don't like the Samsung layer of the original stock ROM.
In the meantime the cell tower option has been added to the Carbon rom!

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this, and/or had any solutions - as it's slowly driving me mad.
I do love my M8, but it's getting old and slow running Sense 6/7, and I much prefer the 'pureness' of GPe/CM12.
My phone is SuperCID'd and fully unlocked, and currently flashed the latest RUU for GPe (full firmware) then Candy5 ROM v2.5.5 flashed (based on CM12).
I've tried various Sense firmwares, and other hacked/full GPe firmwares... Bluetooth seems the same on all - works fine on Sense, but not as reliable on non-Sense.
The biggest issue I have is that I have a LG G Watch R and it will disconnect after a few hours, sometimes days, and won't reconnect unless I turn off and on Bluetooth on the phone. Even then it's temporary - I find Wiping Data on com.share.bluetooth makes it stable again for a few more hours/days.
And no, it's not the watch, as if I'm in the car at the same time - that will disconnect and not reconnect either. It's definitely the phone...
Now I generally keep Bluetooth and WiFi on at all times. I only use WiFi at home.
I have noticed it seems to become unreliable if WiFi is on, but hasn't been connected to anything for a while. It's almost like it's "scanning" buffer is full and it's affecting both WiFi and BT (as it's the same chip).
If I keep WiFi off, and only on at Home where it stays connected - my Bluetooth seems really reliable and I don't have an issue.
This isn't a fix, though. As I don't want to have to rely on Llama to switch my WiFi on and off based on my location. Surely a potential battery drain versus just keeping it on at all times.
I've tried a Tasker task to wipe com.share.bluetooth every couple of hours, but it didn't fix it. Would still die beforehand.
I've tried various GPe ROMs, and CM12 ROMs - all as Clean Flashes and not restoring Bluetooth data in Titanium Backup (I only restore user aps + data).
Just wondered if anyone had any ideas!!
Thanks for reading.
I'm having the exact same issue.
Gpe and sense work fine, but cm12,1 just won't stay connected to my car or watch. Very frustrating.
I really want to run cm as my daily driver, but it's totally incapable of keeping Bluetooth up.
Is anyone running cm 12.1 and has working Bluetooth? If so, can you let us know which radio firmware you're using?
I took a stab in the dark and applied firmware 4.16.401.10. So far my watch's connection has been solid. Still haven't tested the car, but will test today. Hopefully it'll be stable - if it is then I'll finally be able to use CM as my daily driver!
Full commute without Bluetooth disconnecting from my car, and I've had a solid connection to my watch for over 24 hrs! WOOOOOOOT!!!!
4.16.401.10 is the trick. Anyone having Bluetooth issues on CM12.1 should go download and apply the firmware. (must be s-off, obvs.)
Firmware is here (courtesy of Mike1986 of ARHD fame)
Ah great news - thanks.
I'll give it a go later!
Should know within 15 mins after if the bug is fixed!
Thanks again.
Update - looks like that's the fix!
Strange it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere else but at least it's now here for anyone else.
Thanks for the tip!
Hi All,
I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on an issue I'm having. It is occurring with Franco Kernel, and it also used to happen with BluSpark, and with EX. I'm not sure it was happening on stock, as I have been flashing custom kernels since at least the Oreo betas.
Frequently when my OP5T (re)joins a public wifi (here in London it's on the Underground), it freezes and reboots. It's not every time it rejoins the network, but it is happening every day, several times. It's the sort of network with a sign in splash screen. It is driving me crazy.
Does anyone have any idea why this is? Is it likely to be a custom kernel issue (since I hear that OP custom kernels use a different WiFi solution than the stock kernel)? I don't want to go back to stock permanently since I like the SOT and the sound mods on custom kernel.
I've just flashed stock kernel again and will see if that fixes things, but I'd prefer a solution that still allows for bumping up the volume (already using V4A).
As always thank you all!
This is still happening to me... Does anyone have any idea of how to troubleshoot this. I have reinstalled stock kernel... still same problem. Dirty flashed the beta again... still a problem. It only seems to be happening with one specific (unfortunately useful) wifi network, the London Underground WiFi.
The Wifi icon gets the little circle with the 'x' in it, then the whole phone freezes. It doesn't happen every time the phone rejoins the network, but about every 4th or 5th time.
Someone has recommended factory resetting... but I'm not sure that's not a nuclear option at this point. Any idea WHAT might be causing it and is there a way to just tackle that?
help?!
