Rogers/ATT Galaxy S3 Root/Recovery Guide - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

People worked hard to get this where it is now but I had to search through a BUNCH of different posts to find the proper recovery images, files, etc. Thought I would put everything here so it takes a shorter amount of time to get it done:
*NOTE: UPDATED, THIS IS FOR ALL 747 MODELS, JUST GET THE RIGHT ROOTED ROM FOR YOUR CARRIER BELOW*
To Root The Galaxy S3 (Rogers SGH-I747M Model & Others) - And Use a Custom Rom If You Wish
1. Download Odin 3.07+ and the Samsung S3 Drivers here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722686
2. Download the LATEST clockwork Recovery Image Here:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
D2ATT Galaxy S3
3. Download the stock ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Extract it with WinRar/7Zip.
Now for the easy part... seriously lol. How to ROOT:
1. Make sure phone is charged.
2. Install the Samsung USB Drivers with the phone disconnected.
3. With the phone booted to Android. Plug in the phone. Once the drivers install, disconnect the phone.
4. Power off the phone.
5. Put the phone in Download mode: (Hold volume down + home button, then press and hold power until download mode comes up. Then press the volume up key to continue).
6. Connect the phone to the computer again.
7. Wait for more drivers to install if need be.
8. Open "Odin3_v3.07+".
9. Only things that should be checked in Odin are: Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time.
10. Press the PDA button. Load the extracted Pre-Rooted Rogers Rom (or pre-rooted rom for your carrier). Flashing this ROM should not delete any data on the phone.
11. Once the ROM is loaded (it may take a minute or two), hit the Start button in Odin. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE PHONE.
12. Once the phone reboots you are DONE! The phone is now rooted with the stock software. You will have superuser etc. Do NOT update superuser within superuser itself. It breaks it/does not update properly in my experience.
Note: If you are coming back from another ROM to Stock, please make sure you wipe and format all partitions on your phone, then go through the above steps. Failing to do so will make your phone hang at the Samsung boot screen. If you are experiencing this, just boot into the stock recovery and wipe, then reboot.
To Flash ClockworkMod Recovery:
Have the recovery image on the internal memory...name as "recovery.img"
Download Android Terminal Emulator from the Play Store, have the recovery image on the internal memory, run:
Once in the terminal type: su (press enter)
Then type: dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)
Once the recovery is flashed, you can load Cyanogenmod 10+ from here:
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2att&type=nightly
Newest Rogers/Bell/Telus modem/radio image (ATT is located here as well):

In my experience it has not factory reset it if coming from a STOCK rogers rom going to a ROOTED rogers rom. Everything stays. Your mileage may vary.

What's the difference between the CWM recovery you posted (5.8.4.5) and this one? http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/cwm-recovery-on-all-sgs3-lte-variants.html

Team Epic's cwm recovery is actually for Sprint, but should work well on all devices (I used that one before switching to twrp recovery here).
The one posted in the OP is the AT&T cwm recovery, which many developers insist be used as a condition for support on their roms. If you are going with CWM, I would suggest the ATT version above for that reason.

Will this work on the bell version too?

Yeah should work, but I have no way to test it.
Download the rooted image for bell here (telus listed as well for those on telus): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
***Not sure if the ClockworkMod recovery for ATT will work on bell (although I dont see why i wont and you can always flash back to stock if need be) but give it a go and let us know haha***
If it doesnt work, the above link has the recovery for Bell.

AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus and Sasktel are all on the i747 version of the GS3. The differences (that I am aware of) between AT&T and the Canadian carriers are the modem (software that connects the phone to networks such as cellular/wifi/bluetooth) and carrier bloatware or restrictions. As mentioned above by Ka24e, make sure you use your carrier's rooted image if following this guide to root. Other than that, if something works on Rogers, I cannot see a reason why it wouldn't work for the Canadian carriers mentioned above.
The only thing I strongly recommend AGAINST flashing is an AT&T modem....this could brick your phone!

I'd like to ask as well on CM9/CM10 if you guys are getting proper connections with the APN listed above:
I receive no matter where I am:
UMTS:3 and HSPAP:15
Anyone getting anything different? Only reply if you are using ROGERS.
(To check Settings -> About -> Status)
I think I may have found my problem/answer but waiting on replies anyways haha. -> Yep, Rogers didnt put me on the proper LTE plan, just a regular POS plan. RAGE. Calling them in a few.

Great guide. Now rooted. Can we update superuser in the play store and just not within the app?
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium

Yup, updating via PlayStore seems fine for me.
Also, Rogers fixed my LTE plan and LTE connects on APN Type = *

Oops double post.

Ok thanks. Will try it

Works fine here, what Clockwork Mod Recovery did you install (what version) and also what is the exact output when you try to backup? I've backed up and restored a couple times from CWM and it works fine.

I installed the one in this tutorial in the OP. Says cannot mount SD card

hey guys, i got my s3 yesterday, followed this guide (thanks a lot by the way) and flashed CM9 nightly (2012-08-16) and one think i notice is that 3G / LTE seems considerably slower than on stock rom... i created a new APN with the settings listed in the OP and it seems the same. anyone seeing the same drop? stock ran speedtest.net at around 5-6 Mbit and now with CM9 im getting 1-2 Mbit... what do you guys think?
thanks

5-6 mbps sounds slow for LTE, I average 20, have hit over 50, slowest being around 12. You should call provider and make sure your LTE is activated.

Cwm on sg3 not working properly?

Hi,
I'm experiencing some issues with cwm recovery. When I try to do anything in rom manager it says that I must have cwm recovery installed but when I try to flash cwm recovery via rom manager my phone isn't listed (sg3 att) I have the latest version straight from Google play.
I would greatly appreciate some assistance with this very annoying problem.
Thnk you!

Get twrp does the same exact thing but a better ui and everything!!! Install goo manager and just choose a random rom to flash (you dont really have to flash the rom) its just so it prompts you to ask if you have a custom recovery say no and it will install twrp! Trust me on this one TWRP is one flawless custom recovery and always seems to work with me
Hey thanks for that reply. Just a couple of questions. I went ahead and installed twrp recovery and you're right its very easy to use. I tried flashing cm10 stable (at&t) on Rogers sg3 and I keep getting error 7. I factory reset the phone just like I would have with cwm.
Also, while in twrp when I select browse all compatible rims nothing comes up.
Any ideas?
Thanks again.

Wierd. CM10 always says Cwm is the only one that works to flash its rom .. but its wierd cuz i flashed cm10 perfectly with twrp many times before
Heres a thread to fix your error 7 though.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1932975
Did you install ROM Manager from the market (Play Store)? EDIT: Just re-read your OP stating that you did a fresh install. At any rate, it should work fine, there is an option to select the AT&T version of the S3 (see attached screen shot).
TWRP is good too, I'm just more accustomed to cwm so I tend to stick with it.

I had the same issue as you. I'm on a Rogers GS3 and the S3 ATT wasn't showing up in the Rom Manager menu.
I installed CWM using this toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
I then had to update CWM to a more current version using these instructions: http://andr0idtech.blogspot.ca/2012/09/how-to-install-latest-clockworkmod.html
Once I updated CWM I was able to flash CM10 with no problems.

That is weird!
The "S3 (AT&T)" shows up in your screenshot but it is nowhere in sight on my copy of CWM... (Bell S3)
I am running ROM Manager Premium v5.0.2.4 (current version, no?) and yet, the phone model list skips from the "Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G", to the "Samsung Galaxy S3 (MetroPCS)" and then on to the "Samsung Skyrocket"...
Could this be a regional lock sort of thing? or maybe CWM differentiates between the i747 and the i747m ? Either way, it is NOT showing up in the list...
Any thoughts??

A noob's guide to rooting and flashing

Looking into rooting? Maybe try this foreign ROM thing? (Not talking about ethnicities here) Here is the place to be.
First of all, make sure you have a T-Mobile Galaxy S3. (Aka t999 or d2tmo)
If you follow instructions here for any other device, even for galaxy s3's of another carrier you are extremely likely to regret it and end up having to unbrick your device because you installed an incompatible file.
You can take your battery out to make sure it says t999 under if you are not absolutely sure.
Rooting is a similar idea to jail breaking an iPhone. It removes what restrictions there are with android devices. Yes, it is perfectly legal.
Which leads me to my disclaimer:
I take no credit for what's posted here.
The only work here that's mine is the organization. Please donate to the rightful people who spent quality time developing.
Also I am not responsible for any damage done to your device.
It is vital that you follow instructions in every exact detail.
Firstly, rooting.
1. Install drivers for your device onto your PC. To do this, you can install Samsung Kies or there are downloads that will install the drivers solely(recommended link for drivers http://d-h.st/zya)(thanks DocHoliday77). If you get to the point where you can exchange files to phone from the computer and vice-versa then you're set for drivers.
2. Do a backup (using Kies or a program of your choice)
3.Uninstall Kies. Kies doesn't play nicely with the program used to root called Odin. So uninstall Kies so Odin can work unhindered. Your drivers should stay. But make sure you can still copy files between your phone and computer before proceeding.
4.Follow these instructions put together by OfficialPhoneRebel(aka EverythingApplePro):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKwhAVj5Feg Outdated. try CF-Auto-Root
Yes, I used this method and it did work for me.
5.After you are rooted, the first thing you wanna do is either install ROM manager (on play store). Open ROM manager. (Yes, give it superuser rights) and install the latest clockworkmod recovery, or use GooManager to get TWRP recovery, both work, but sometimes one is suggested for the installation of a specific ROM.
6.Now install busybox(also in play store)
7.You're all done!
If you've made it this far, kudos. Now you're gonna wanna get the app called titanium backup and do a full backup of your phone. Also boot into recovery (home+volume up then press power until it vibrates all while holding home+volume up buttons) do a backup through these menus. If your feeling like an over achiever and wanna be super safe then go ahead and back up to both your internal sdcard and your external sdcard. Also it now would be wise to back up your IMEI nv (basically your phone's identity), instructions for that can be found here (thanks to daxecutioner24)
Now you have reached a possible stopping point. Stop here and enjoy root privileges. Continue to read how to install a custom ROM.
Installing a custom ROM(operating system):
GooManager (on play store) is a pretty good directory for ROMs. And is a great place to download them and gapps. Now since not every ROM installs this way it is important to check the main page associated with that page to see if any special instructions are required.
But this is what you generally do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946701
Roms:
Gapps can be found either on the ROM's page or through goo manager make sure the firmware versions match up (like android 4.1 and 4.1 jelly bean gapps)
For a pure android ROM I would suggest CyanogenMod 10.1 (the one I am currently on)
For an inverted stock ROM stuffed with fun features I would suggest DaRTHSTALKER S3
For a full list of roms and descriptions or if your just addicted to flashing, then here's the stockpile of almost every rom made for the galaxy s3 t999
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088179
Backups are your friend. Especially through recovery mode. They have saved my butt several times when flashing a ROM went wrong.
And yes it is possible to sim unlock (make it so you can use it on any GSM network(such as at&t or US cellular)) your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037390
Problem happened and you can no longer boot correctly? This is actually very common.
If you can boot into recovery:
Boot into recovery (Hold home button and volume up then press power till it vibrates all while holding volume up and home)
Restore backup (easiest method)
If that falls through then install a rom by following the instructions mentioned earlier.
If you can't boot into recovery or if those methods didn't work:
You must odin to stock. Follow the instructions here under using odin. Odin and Driver files are at the top of the post. Firmware files (what you put in PDA) are located here
If this didn't work, you may be out of luck, try again and if you are still stuck browse the forums and possible post something under Q and A if worst comes to worse, make sure to describe the entire situation including error messages you may have received so the problem can be pinpointed.
And finally, everyone be nice seeing as I am welcoming very new people to this thread.
Also if any suggestions to improve this post let me know.

I like this post, would save those useless threads how do I root even though it's sticky all over. Also it would be really helpful if you include how to back up your IMEI nv maybe link the thread before they start flashing roms. This is probably one of the most important thing as when you start flashing stuff the IMEI might get lost and without that there is no phone. Everything else looks good.

The way I understand it is the kernel is the bridge between your input and the devices output. Like the bridge between software and hardware... Sorta.. Ya you don't need to flash one sometimes custom kernels can add features and maybe improve GPS/battery life but I don't use custom kernels much. But that's just me some people are in to that stuff.
And yeah it just depends on the specific ROM for the specific features. I don't know if this is still a think its been a while since I've had some Samsung action but check our hyperdrive they had some good stuff going on when I used em.
Best bet is Google. Everything you could ever want to know about kernels and more! If you want to know about custom ones, read the OP's of the many available ones.

[Q] Rooting for a complete noob... SGH-T999

Hi, I am a complete noob at this. I am trying to root my GS3 SGH-T999 because i want to be able to run a rom (if thats the correct term) that would give me some of the GS4 type features. I rooted it using a you tube video, i would post the link but xda does not allow me to, but the title of the video is: "How to Root the Sprint / AT&T / T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III - Latest" and accomplished what appears to be a successful root of my phone. But I've since downloaded several roms and have not been able to get any of them to work. If anybody could refer me to a video or link or just a better way to accomplish my goal i would be very grateful. I'm completely lost and have no idea what to do, any type of help would be appreciated, I'm sure there's someone out there in my shoes as well... thanks

This will root your stock Samsung T999 Galaxy S3 phone. - It works every time.
There are many other ways to root but for a noob this will root your phone the first
time around instead of trying a lot of other ways which may or may not work for you.
Easy and sure way to root: here is the step by step guide:
After you have followed these instructions your phone will be in the same condition
as it was the day you have purchased it except with the benefit of being rooted.
Download the stock-rooted T999 firmware: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426451
After downloading it make a folder on your computer's desktop and unzip the
file using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Here is a link for ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware (a windows app) http://d-h.st/Q14
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file.
Download the Odin Flash firmware for T999 Tmobile then copy it to the same folder as Odin
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the same folder as the TAR file you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up, then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the Firmware you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache!
(It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)
Good Luck!
there's galaxy s4 apps that have been ported to the galaxy s3. however, they have bugs.
galaxy s4 apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206668
the easy way to root the t-mobile galaxy s3 is root66.
more information, please read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687
also, make sure the rom you are flashing is made for the T-MOBILE Galaxy s3 (T999). Do NOT flash a International Galaxy s3 rom (i9300). flashing an international rom will brick your device.

Measure twice cut once
You have rooted your phone with a stock root wich means you now have root access (if successful) . When you say you tried to flash a rom and it didn t work can you give details for everyone the process and symptoms ie in clockworks recovery, bootloop, stuck on logo etc. did you run root checker?
Heres the link from the video http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743780
What exactly are you asking? How to root? Cause from what I'm picking up in your post is that you already rooted but can't flash ROM's.
Do you have an app called SuperSu? Can you use root apps like Titanium Backup or ROM Manager?
If so, boot into recovery. (Hold Volume up, Home, and Power. When you feel the buzz let go of power and keep holding volume up and home)
If you don't have SuperSu then you're not rooted. You can follow the instructions above or go to Galaxys3root.com

Sounds like you need to update your recovery. Go to the play store and download rom manager, open it and update the recovery. Now you shouldn't have any problems flashing roms.

What exactly are you asking? How to root? Cause from what I'm picking up in your post is that you already rooted but can't flash drive ROM's.
Do you have an app called SuperSu? Can you use root cause apps like Titanium Backup or ROM Manager?

So I have superuser, and I checked that I was rooted with the root checker app, and it was suggested to me that I update clockwork mod because I had an older version, I haven't tried to flash a rom yet though, are there any good stable roms I should try?

Ok, like BeastMode suggested, download ROM Manager, update clockworkmod and you should be set.
Before flashing a rom. Backup your apps with Titanium Backup. Then boot into recovery and make a backup. This is highly important cause incase something goes wrong, you can just restore to where you are now.
Titanium saves your apps and data, backup through recovery makes a copy of your phone as it is now.
If you want a touchwiz based ROM, I suggest Wicked v9.1 it's what I use daily. I love it and highly recommend it to anyone.
If you decide to go to a 4.2.2 rom, that's ok but you might face some issues going from 4.2.2 AOSP back to a 4.1.1 ROM. Gps is likely to be broken when going back but there's an easy fix for it so no worries.
I had to Odin back to stock. Going from 4.2.2 to 4.1.1 was giving me random reboots and force closes. Just a warning.

How do I get/use titanium backup? And could you post a link for wicked v9.1? Thanks.
Playstore. Search titanium Backup, once there backup all apps and data. Go to preferences if you want to save on your external sd card.
Go to android development section of the time mobile galaxy S iii and wicked thread should be on the first page.
Follow instructions when installing. But do your backups first before flashing anything.

[Q] Unbrick GN2 (Firmware upgrade encountered an issue)

Before you guys read this thread, let me just go ahead and say that i AM in fact a XDA noob... so dont hate. I didnt come here for that, but i came for help. Now, i did notice that there were alot of people having similar problems as i was. And yes, i did read all those threads. BUT, the only difference was, they got that error while trying to unroot. I was trying to root mine. I simply tried flashing CWM (and yes i made sure it was the correct flash as well) and it failed. Tried rebooting the phone, and i got that error. I am honestly freaking out right now as to if i have lost my phone or not, so i wouldnt appreciate hate in the comments, that would not help. So please help if possible... Is there a way to fix this?
We're you on stock Rom. How did you try a put CWM on your phone?? Odin??
Best way to install a recovery is Odin or goo manger!!
If you can get the phone into download mode then you can just flash back to your stock firmware...
Unless you flashed the wrong recovery on your phone. Then your in store for brick city.

thanks, i was actually on odin. But i think i found the solution. You see, when i was trying to find a solution on my own, i accidentally ended up installing a verizon rom on my phone which is att. (i didnt know it was verizon) The rom works, but i cant use mobile data, because its not a verizon SIM card. However, i managed to install TWRP recovery with goomanager, and from that i will attempt to install the JediXP14 custom rom. Strangely, it seems the phone is rooted even though i was told it failed. I will let you know on the progress, should be done in an hour or so.
Oh boy..... I smell brick city.. You better be careful what ur doing with Odin... If u are flashing stock firmware in Odin it flashes the radio with it....
Ok guys, i SOMEWHAT resolved the issue. But there are alot better ways of doing it, i was just forced to do it the following way:
The only flash rom i could get to go in through odin was a Verizon rom. It was basically the stock Note 2 rom for verizon.
Now the only problem with this, is that obviously, my phone is ATT and this is a Verizon rom, but it WILL work, but with an exception. Wifi and all will work, you can call and receive messages, but you cannot access the internet via mobile data. So that was another issue that popped up. I tried flashing an att stock rom through odin, but it stayed stuck at "Setup Connection" so that didnt work. The only solution i could think of was to unlock the rom, so i could use data with my ATT sim card. Strangely, the phone thought that it was a Verizon phone when it was an ATT phone, so that was the only option. It required a root but that wasnt a problem. I installed Hidroid off the play store and unlocked it that way, and now everything works fine. There is still an error message in the status bar saying "Non-Verizon SIM" but despite that message, everything still is in working order. If anyone knows what to do once you first get that error message, you could post it below for anyone else having the same problem. And if there is a way to change it back to the normal ATT stock, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks

Maybe you just need to flash att modem with ril for your device. Scroll down and dload the one for att then flash using cwm or twrp. After flashing modem try flashing att rom again via Odin.

Ok guys I resolved the problem. But it took more steps than it needed. This is for people who accidentally flashed the wrong type of recovery to your phone (example, gt-1700 version of cm what on sgh-I317) I'll be renaming this thread if I can. So here's all the steps I took. Now keep in mind that I didn't exactly know what I was doing so I kind of learned on the way, like I said in the beginning of this thread, I am a noob, and I admit such.
1. Install any rom that is in md5 format (preferably with your carrier modem but anything will do) I used a verizon rom. I can't exactly provide a link given my user status though, but I will when I can.
2. If you don't have wifi and downloaded rom under incorrect modem, then download hidroid on the play store and unlock it. It should be simple once getting the app. This will allow you to use mobile data. You'll need it.
3. Download goomanager
4. Press menu button
5. Install open recovery script
Now you should have TWRP installed on your device.
6. Install any custom rom compatible with your device, but make sure it comes with the correct modem as your phone originally had.
7. Flash it through TWRP (make a backup first)
You should be done from there. Now I don't recommend this. There has to be an easier way, so it would be great if anyone could provide that below. But the steps above are the steps I took. Thanks

Easiest is flash att rom thru odin then reboot into recovery factory reset then let phone boot up.

Umm guys, i ran into a similar problem. Where would i find the att rom to flash from odin?

[Q] Noob question :)

To start off my name's Gerry.
I have an sgh-t999v from videotron in Montreal. I would like to root my phone and just want to make sure I'm downloading the right file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
I'm running completely stock 4.1.1 at the moment. Do I have to use the version 4.1.1 or can I use the 4.1.2 for videotron ?
I follow the directions from the same page right?
I ask because I've already tried doing this with instructions from here and it ended disastrously .
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-root/how-to-root-t-mobile-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999/
Phone crashed twice then could not get out of download mode.
I ended up finding a stock rom from sprint that I flashed with ODIN.
My counter is now at 9 I believe. I just want to make sure this will work because I don't want to have to go through the bs all over again.
Any insight as to how to make it even easier than it already looks would be greatly appreciated thanks.
4.1.1 or 4.1.2, either is fine. download the root66 file for your phone.
Extract the root66 tar file from the .7z file you downloaded.
Put phone into download mode [ with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66 tar you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot.
If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
you can stop here if you just want root.
If you want to flash custom ROMs, download ROM manager from play store to flash the clockworkmods recovery.

Try using a different browser, like chrome or firefox (if you are not already using one of them) It seems your current browser settings are not properly set. So downloading a different browser could just save you some time and allow you to enjoy the almighty rootness of your S3!!

For the T999V and T999L, its best to not use Rom Manager or Goo Manager. There are a number of flashables that will only flash if you are using the d2tmo (T999) recovery. Using one of those apps will install d2can or d2ltetmo.
Easiest way is to download either TWRP or CWM (both are good, its up to you which) and flash in Odin right after you flash root66.
You'll want to download one with the .tar.md5 extension. Flash in Odin the exact same way you flash the firmware.
You don't have to do this, but its better for broader compatibility.

I flashed WICKED but no luck . The camera wouldn't work and couldn't connect to the network either maybe I'm doing something wrong . The phone is rooted but I've flashed 2 Rom now and no luck . Does anyone have a link for Rom that are just for the T999v model? Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
If you flashed your stock kernel the camera wouldve probably worked. If you can't find one, ill make a zip for you a little later. Its usually tge kernel on stuff like that.
An no there are zero roms built only for the T999V. Everyone else has been doing fine with what's available.

Is there a rom that you would work on my phone that you could recommend then
please. it is greatly appreciated.
Just look at the ones that seem to get the most discussion. As far as I was aware, wicked worked fine for just about everyone, so I'd say just try another with similar features you want. If it doesn't work maybe another T999V user can give you a clue as to what you might be missing, if anything. I haven't tried most of them so I'm going by what I hear others say. There are several very good ones to choose from. I'd just start trying them each for a few days to see if any work well for you.

When I flashed a rom different from the stock rom I also had issues with the camera.
Option 1:
- You can try dialing *#34971539# (don't forget the * in front) and then selecting your Phone/CAM FW Ver Check
- Once you do that, a little box on the bottom will tell you your Rear Camera Firmware. You have to make sure that they match. If not, you can install the proper firmware (look around on the forums, I know its there)
- Extract the file to the root of your storage and then after that dial *#34971539# and select the second option. This should write the firmware onto your phone
- Exit out and then redial *#34971539# again and select the Phone/CAM FM Ver Check and see if the firmware are both matching. If they are, reboot the phone and it should work again
Option 2:
- If you are running a different rom and stock kernel, the camera may not work so you should probably flash the ktoonsez kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871946) I ran into this problem and after installing this kernel and changing my firmware my camera worked again
I hoped that help you out

Sorry, but Ive got to correct a couple of things here. This hasn't worked since at least a couple of updates ago. The firmware write option is locked. Also, you said to extract the file? Do you mean the option to perform the fw dump? This doesn't create a file you can see, use or flash that I've ever found. Not sure what you mean by this. Sorry it just doesn't make sense.
This is the correct way, if it were working.
Chose Cam to Phone FW Ver Check, if the camera firmware is older than the Phone firmware, then you would choose Phone to Cam FW Write. Thats it.
The dump, I believe basically created a fw img dump on one of the underlying partitions. No one ever reported finding it.
Anyway, I believe it was when we updated to LJA that we lost the ability to update the camera firmware. Also, the camera FW is not the device firmware, just so you know.
If you know something different I'm glad to hear it, I'm just not sure what you are trying to tell people to do...

Completely trouble free. The only thing I ask is how do I keep all my apps that i've bought ? Or do I just have to keep downloading them from playstore ?
