So my wife's captivate glide seems to have this problem:
- her glide (everything is stock) often never rings when someone calls her. No missed call notification, just a voicemail if the person decides to leave one.
-yesterday at home I called her phone from both my cell (motorola Atrix, HSDPA) and landline...no ring. Immediately afterwards from my landline to my Atrix, phone rings. Signal strength is around -70dBm for both the Glide and Atrix. I turned on airplane mode on the glide and then off. Called again from our landline and the phone rings on the glide.
Is it the cell tower? phone?
First thing - is the ringer volume on?
ringer volume is on...the glide was in front of me while I was dialing it from our landline or from my Atrix. The glide did not pop up the incoming call screen or ring until I turned on/off airplane mode, which is not a suitable workaround.
cell signal strength from my atrix shows -83 to -91 dBm. cell tower is ~488m away (using the open signal app)
I get this too sometimes.
Could never figure out why if it's hardware or software.
Anyone else have this issue?
I don't have this issue but I never receive calls and when I do it rings
-sent from my insanely awesome captivate glide-
my dads phone (a basic nokia on at&t) does this on occasion the phone has to be rebooted & it works fine. it happens after he goes to their summer home (300 miles away & in a rural area w/ LOTS of at&t dead spots). it does appear to be a tower/roaming type thing.
Get a new sim card....

I've summed this up as an AT&T issue. Have been with them since the Cingular days and every phone I've ever had with them has exhibited this behavior. Making the switch to T-Mobile now that I can get an unlimited everything plan for $60/month

Thing is for when I did my test, my phone (Atrix) got the incoming call from our landline and my wife's phone (Glide) did not. Both have the same band support, maybe the Glide was on a different band?
My wife's phone has the same problem!
My wife's phone has the same problem! She complains about it all the time, and I have no idea what to do. Everything is stock.
It regularly doesn't ring. Like more than twice chunks of time a week.
I do notice that the Glide goes from HSPA to UMTS to HSDPA (in Status->Mobile Network Type) when I enable and then disable airplane mode. The Atrix stays on HSPA when I enable and then disable airplane mode.
I think when the Glide was not receiving calls it was in UMTS. Atrix was in HSPA.
I know someone else with a Blackberry on AT&T that has this problem sometimes. My Glide on AT&T had this problem the other day. I think it's a network thing.
At least if you use Google Voice for voicemails you will always get an e-mail that you missed a call even when the phone doesn't even show a missed call and the caller doesn't leave a voicemail.
Can any of you follow up on this? Did you ever get the problem solved? Did switching phones or SIMs help?
I'm collecting info on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779654 so we can assess the extent of this issue.
Not just an AT&T problem, it happens to me on Rogers in Canada. It happened to me just earlier today.
Mine has periods of time where it will do this, maybe an afternoon or a full day, then it goes away. Not often maybe once every couple of months. I suspect it is the carrier.

I had the same problem and for me, I found that "viper" program is causing it... It takes hold of the phone functionality and prevents the android phone app from triggering the ring and lighting the screen ... I unistalled it and every thing is back to noramal :good:
Me and the Mrs have the same problem all the time. There is no telling how many calls we miss.

I'm with Lookin4Troubleon this one and think this is an AT&T issue (who I have also been with since Cingular).
New Motorola Atrix HD, working fine, left on a desk in a well serviced area having never left range of the tower to which it is connected. After a period of time although the phone shows full bars and a 4G connection, when a call is dialed from the phone it realizes that it is not on any network and re-initializes it's network connection, going through the various icons and network types until it gets to 4G and then the call goes out. While the phone is in that limbo state (full bars and 4G icon but not actually connected to the network) incoming calls go straight to voice-mail and no alerts for missed calls or voice mails are sent to the phone... until the process of making an outgoing call from the phone forces it to re-find the network - then incoming calls and voice mail alerts function... until the next instance. This happens several times a day and I have been unable to logically connect the problem it to any activity starting at the phone.
In the early days of 3G this used to happen a lot because the phones (referring to Motorola Razer V3xx) were unable to cleanly release a tower going out of range and attach to a tower coming into range as you traveled. Compounding the problem was the fact that the phones would not fall back on a different network band as they should have when the 3G connections were bad... because bad 3G connections were not being detected by the phone.
Same sh!t, different day! The new generation of 4G phones on AT&T are as bad as ever at falling back to the older network type when needed AND somehow the combination of AT&T and Motorola have managed to recreate this problem on stationary phones in good coverage areas. GOOD GRIEF.
Working my way through some tech levels at Motorola and AT&T. I've always suspected that this has to do with the phone not properly switching between the various networks it uses for calls and data, and to my amazement AT&T leaned towards blaming their own service issues along those very lines of thought. They seem to be having issues managing their 4G LTE stuff. If their next round of escalation does not find an answer I'm going to try forcing WCDMA connection (4G without LTE) to see if the issue relates to the toggle off/on of the LTE component. The LTE indicator is on for data and off for calls and there is a brief moment where the signal dips to zero bars during the transition. The 2 screenshots below show network state during a "4G" call and after call has ended. Perhaps this is where the problem lies. For anyone interested in testing this way, you can use LTE Setting by Ryo Ueshima. Even though that app was developed for Sony Xperia I've used to to test forcing of GSM/Edge and 4G (no LTE) on my Atrix HD. Resets after restart of phone and perhaps at other times, and may behave differently on different providers - also there are some buttons in that app which you don't want to click on without first noting the default value.

I've noticed a network behavior I did not have on my EVO 4G. The Note 2 can't switch to 4G when it's busy using 3G. You could be standing under a 4G tower and the phone won't switch if, for instance, you're downloading a file. My EVO 4G would switch between 3G and Wimax no problem.
Is this a hardware limitation? Software problem?
Could be a difference between Wimax and LTE connections. I have never noticed this issue, but I also only saw a Wimax signal a couple of times. I had the OG Evo and then the Evo 3D, but rarely ever saw a Wimax signal. With my Evo LTE, my entire area is blanketed with LTE, so I'm never switching between 3G and LTE in the middle of a download. I'll try to test out this scenario within the next few days with both my Note 2 and my Evo LTE. If I do have any weird findings with either, I'll call Sprint and activate my black Evo LTE and see how it handles the data connection transition. That way I will have tested the specific data transition with 3 different devices, and should be able to come up with a some what conclusive decision with what's going on. If someone else has a Wimax device and is in a Wimax area, it would be nice if they could compare that side by side with their LTE device! I still have my Evo 3D, but like I said earlier, I'm not near a Wimax area for testing...

Hmmmm. Interesting. I never noticed that behaviour on my NII or EvoLTE. I still have my E4GT laying around so maybe I'll activate it and see what happens. I've been lucky in my area seeing as we had WiMax coverage even before the release of the OG Evo and are pretty well covered with LTE.

I've noticed OPs issue. The same kinda thing will happen when I am driving away from my home and my phone tries to hang on to my signal booster. Once I actually loose the connection my phone will jump onto 3G and usually by that point I have Pandora opened and trying to play. It wont switch to LTE until either the song is fully buffered (witch in this case doesn't happen because the 3G at this point sucks (connected to tower)) or I go to Airplane Mode and shut off all radios and then turn off Airplane Mode. The LTE will come right up and I have no data issues.
If I'm not near my signal booster, like at work, and I am at my desk getting LTE, when I put my phone in my pocket and walk around it will drop to 3G. When I come back to my desk and try to start using an app that requires data, it wont jump back to LTE until I either close the app that is pulling the data, or do another Airplane Mode toggle.
I think all it is, is just the scan times between searching for an LTE signal (I think like 30 seconds and not every 1 second) to save battery. I could be wrong though. It is annoying to have to go through this routine every day though.
I've never payed attention to it before but now I do see what the op is talking about. Mine won't switch either

I think it's a bit random in my experience. It's it currently downloading something, it'll stay. But I've seen it switch it though while streaming a movie/show/event. I've had the GN2 get suck where it switch towers, but wasn't really connecting, which required the airplaine mode on/off trick.
spotopolis,
You hit right on the kind of scenario I am experiencing. I'm in the car listening to a streaming podcast or streaming music. And because the car is moving, the phone sometimes switches to 3G and will not get back on to LTE unless I kill all network access. It's like the phone needs a moment to breath before attempting to connect LTE.
This would not bug me so much if 3G had a data rate better than 50kbps. When I'm stuck in 3G, forget streaming or downloading anything. Very frustrating.
Trying to figure out if this is a limit of Note 2, LTE, Sprint's LTE or a bug.
It's an LTE issue. I've experienced the same behavior with 4G when I was in NY last weekend. Soon as I stopped Pandora and 3G went idle 4G came on. And no that is not an issue with Wimax devices. Coming from an E4GT and Evo 3D covered in Wimax coverage here in Hartford CT 4G automatically connects and overrides 3G even if 3G is active. However that's an issue too because the 3G to Wimax handoff sucks which leaves your data hanging for a sec. I usually have to stop my downloads and restart them while on the new 4G connection lol

That would be a software issue, not Wimax problem. I had some apps that handled network switches very well. That includes going from cell networks (3G/4G) to WIFI. Perfect example is what I noticed using streaming music on my EVO 4G. (The follow is true for these apps many versions ago.)
1. Slacker, terrible making switch. 99% would stop playback.
2. Pandora, better than Slacker. Could pause during playback but would pickup if network regained soon.
3. Google Music, best of the bunch. Can handle network jumps very well. I think partly due to caching the next song while playing current song.
I thought i was the only one having this issue.... good to know.
I've never had this problem. My n2 has no problem switching from 3g to 4g. When I'm driving while listening to Pandora, I hit areas that only 3g and phone shows 3g. Then afterwards it goes back to 4g with no problem. It does it effortlessly and on a daily. I live in Chicago and we are lte for the most part but I know certain suburbs do not have 4g and my n2 switches without a problem. Guess I'm lucky.

Interesting thread. I'm seeking an answer too. FWIW I don't own a Note 2 but also noticed this behaviour, with my SGS3. I created a thread some time ago (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989176) but there was little interest, which surprised me, considering how annoying it can be.
I really wanted to like it.
I have been running PA/CM rom since they first came out, flipping back and forth. ZVA came out and i was excited and TOT to it. my signal went to ****.
95% of my day is in a 4g area, on ZV8, I see 4g (and pretty fast speeds) most of my day.
I flashed to ZVA, and i can watch the 4g (at my desk, so basically the same place everyday) flip to 3g for no reason. the worst part is it does it in the middle of something. if i go into airplane mode and back out it goes to 4g, for a few minutes and flips to 3g again. so frustrating.
on the way home we drive by an antenna and with ZV8 i see 40 megabit speeds (i can see the antenna from the car)
on ZVA, it will NEVER flip to 4g. we will come into, and go out of the coverage area for that antenna and it will stay in 3g the whole time. if i flip airplane mode, it will kick into 4g.
absolutely terrible!
so ZVC comes out, I TOT to it for a day. same exact problems. 0 4g like the phone does not even try to look for it! also a co worker has the same phone and the same issues. He requested i flash him back to ZV8 just because of the terrible signal on ZVA/ZVC (he has never run a rom or anything other than stock)
is anyone else experiencing these problems?
is there anything that i can do that might help? id like to rock ZVC, but without reliable 4g its a no go
Have you tried disabling band 26 and 41 to see if you get same 4g as before. If not give it a try. ##DATA# and edit LTE. You will need your MSL. Maybe that would help. You will lose the other bands but maybe that is your problem. Maybe trying to connect to those bands but have bad signal so stays on 3g.
Working well for me surprisingly enough
Sent from my LG-LS980 using Tapatalk
Had the same exact problems and disabling bands 41 and 26 helped a lot. However, that means you basically are back to non-Spark, but that was still better than the frustrating fall back to 3G and staying on 3G. Some people say that just disabling band 41 helps too.
However, I've noticed much less of a problem recently with this issue with all 3 bands enabled on ZVA. I suspect that Sprint is upgrading towers around my area to better address this issue. So maybe it's not a software issue on our phones.

The problem is ecsfb (enhanced circuit switched fallback) spark phones can't connect to the voice network and lte at the same time because they only have one antenna instead of two. But to be able to switch back and forth between lte and 3g the towers you're on need to have ecsfb enabled. I had the same problems before but it seems in my area (nyc) that they're starting to enable it as I'll be on lte get a call and then get put back on lte right after the call is up. The coverage for lte in my house is pretty horrible though the signal is like -120dbm outside its much better like -90ish. I just got an airave for my house because I was getting some dropped calls and it worked great for like the first hour the signal went to like -47dbm for the voice/3g network. However after a while it stopped using the airave and it went back to using lte and regular voice towers. I switched my phone to cdma only and it started using the airave again but just now I switched it back to lte/cdma and its no longer using the airave. So that kind of sucks lol. But back to spark it seems to be improving regarding switching to 3g/lte but the coverage hasnt changed much atleast in my house. Whenever I check which band I'm on its either 25 or 41 I have yet to see it go on 26. Hopefully they can hurry it up I considered switching to tmobile last week after sprint tried to charge to say my next bill would be $240 after they told me two weeks before it would be $180 smh. I complained like crazy and they decided to pay the difference and lower my bill so I'll stick with them for now.

Yeah, another known issue with triband phones... The Airave won't connect if your phone is in LTE. But because your phone gets crappy signal at your house, you'll get crappy LTE that intermittently connects, so therefore airave only intermittently connects when you are on CDMA.
I have Tasker automating the switching between LTE/CDMA and CDMA only when I enter and leave my house, but I this solution isn't the best.

3g is way too slow for me I get 1mbps on average up and down. 4g may take more battery but for me it lasts long enough and the benefits are much greater. I do use wifi at home though but if you have the network set to lte the phone won't fully connect to the airave atleast for me because
the lte signal in my house is very low (about -120dbm). So in order to take advantage of the airave I have to set it to 3g even though I'm using wifi. The only alternative I have thus far is the anycut app I put a network settings widget on one of my home screens I can click that and it brings me to the lte/3g setting but its still not as good as having the phone switch itself instantly.
Yep, Airave doesnt support LTE, but do turn off data at home as its an unnecessary drain, dont know about your internet but my Comcast 30Mbps is faster than using the network, plus Airave uses 3G by drawing fom main internet anyway. Also restrict your Airave in settings to only your family numbers unless you want unnecessary connections from neighbors causing bandwidth loss. If you have a big home, call and Airave support will increase your Airave power output to cover about 5,000 Sqft.
Sorry, but theres no reason the phone should not be switching dynamically to 4g as the signal comes available. When I'm at work, and on 4.4.2 it will stay on 4g, and flip itself to 3g in the middle of a file transfer!!
on ZV8, it will get 3 bars of 4g in the same spot.

Airave does not support LTE, so if you dont set it to CDMA only it wont connect to Airave. Thats why even Sprint support says to set to CDMA only, when near an Airave.

What I'm more referring to is the settings in mobile networks. You have to put it to 3g/cdma depending on your rom and whatnot to be able to connect to the airave.
Band 26 isn't out yet if i'm not mistaken. I believe 41 is limited also. Disabling 26/41 will bring you back to nonspark band 25
i dont know how airave got involved in this thread. i could care less if i get solid 3g at my house, i am more concerned about the spark rom's delivering a reliable 4g connection when its available (which it does not)

It's not a great of a solution, but it is automated. I have a profile with the state being connection to my home wifi. Enter task turns off keyguard, then enters mobile data settings, turns on the screen, and then uses two touchscreen taps to tap mobile networks then CDMA.
To execute screen taps, you use a Run shell command of "input tap x y" where the x and y are coordinates of where you want to tap. You figure out the coordinates by showing touch data in the developer options in settings. Be sure you enable root access for the run shell command otherwise it won't work.
Then you can shut the screen off with a system lock. The exit task is just opposite.

Well, Tasker can enter the same page that switches lte/cdma via the Mobile Data settings. The issue is there is no Tasker setting or plugin or anything I've seen that lets you actually change the setting without simulating button taps via a run shell command.
Like I said, not a great solution, but it works. When I enter my house, I'm on CDMA, and when I leave, Global setting without me doing anything.
Anyone else on the ATT G4 having problems with LTE connectivity? In areas where I'd usually get 5 bars of LTE service, a majority of the time I get 2 or 3 bars of Edge service. Putting it into airplane mode and back out doesn't help, turning mobile data on and off doesn't help, and neither does removing the SIM card (and reseting the phone in the process). It seems to come and go whenever it wants to.
Sent from my LG-H810 using Tapatalk
All I can guess is, it's probably just the ATT network itself. They did some upgrades around here a while once Cspire started hyping their fiber optic network and I noticed on my older phone that in areas where I used to get 3G I was stuck getting edge. Even with my G4 I can park in perfect view of a known ATT tower and it'll hit 4G and within a minute be down to 3G - same with strength. Get 5 bars, don't move, no data, no call, and it'll drop down to no bars but still connected and bounce around, usually settling at 2 or 3. Even though ATT says they have full LTE out here I rarely actually see the LTE logo display in the status bar.
I've been using OpenSignal to try to map out coverage areas though, been pretty handy in finding towers and chasing stronger signal
Hi sir
I m using lg g4 h810 AT&T it was working well one day i put a memory card in it signal disappear never came go to software and hardware experts but nobody has solved my problem all other functions of cell phone working properly
Hi,
I've been using Android Auto for calls in my car and think I have a problem.
When I look on my screen I can see, that I'm in 4G. If I start or receive a call it goes instantly in 2G or H.
Now I've found the "extended 4G" option and enabled it.
So the screen shows now that I'm on 4G while calling. So everything seems good. When I drive into a not 4G covered area, it steps back to 2G (seems okay for me) But: I can talk as much as I want and drive into the biggest cities where I absolutely know, that theres 4G coverage, the phone never comes back to 4G while the call. It's locked into 2G.
When the call is over, it switches back to 4G as usual.
But why is it locked to 2G while calling when it's a little time not in covered 4G area?
Google VOLTE and SRVCC. In short behavior you have noticed is normal.
