Yes the ace hack kit is the way to go, be sure to read all of the instructions. There is a irc so u can get help with rooting.

Stock rooted is for example if you stay on your current rom(stock) but you have root capabilities.

Oh OK.but wat if I choose another rom? Can I still receive and install the OTA ICS rom???

Some roms do use an app to notify you of an update, but not all do. Usually they'll post in their threads of an update and you can download it and install it.
But if your asking specifically for the ics update that HTC release you can flash the ruu when it becomes available (but you'll lose root access )or you can flash a custom rom that is based on it.
You won't be able to say be on cm and then install the HTC ota.

[Q] Flashing not working

I've downloaded several different ROMs today, and moved them to /sdcard. I wipe the phone and the cache, and then go to "install zip from sdcard" on Clockworkmod recovery. I've done this several times, and Virtuous Quattro is still here. I'm fairly certain I rooted my phone and everything when I initially installed VQ, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
(Please keep in mind I'm still relatively new to all this phone business.)

Cant we port sense 3.6/4

I think we can port it from desire s which has the official sense 3.6
If you think "we" can, then, come on, get to work.

Desire S and Desire have different hardware. You can't simply port over new roms

You can NOT install any ROM that's not made for your phone. You will break it!

Inspire 4G ROMs are compatible with Desire HD. But there aren't any. In fact, Inspire 4G users use Desire HD ROMs and Desire HD ROMs developers include a patch in their ROMs to make them compatible with Inspire 4G.
So you're not gonna find what you're looking for!
