Auto-rotation issue - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hi all, my mom recently bought the captivate glide. (it is a rogers one, i927r is the model number... & the rogers boot animation is a giveaway lol)
Anyways, it's unlocked, stock, not rooted & she's using it on straight talk at&t.
Here's the issue: the auto-rotation is shoddy/a little over zealous.
Even if the phone is upright, if she/I goes in the messaging app, or any other app, or menu, the screen auto rotates into landscape mode. The only way to fix the issue is to take the auto-rotate option all the way off... which sucks because l obviously she needs it for other things.
I come from a gnex & don't really know much about this device. I thought it would be a good crossover phone for her as this is her first smart phone.
Please, any help/insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I too have noticed the rotate to be at times over zealous. The way that I worked around it is to disable the auto rotate and when I need it to rotate simply open the keyboard tray as that will still rotate the screen even if the auto rotate is disabled. I know it is not the solution you are looking for but just letting you know what worked for me. I see you did mention not wanting to turn off auto rotate but the way I do it you have a work around. Good luck

Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't mind a workaround, but I feel my mom will. Looks like this device may be going back.

I'm not sure if we are talking the same issue but 2 or 3 times the rotation seems to get 90 or 180 degrees off. Turning off auto rotate worked around it until I could reboot which made it go away. I've had the phone for 9 months and it hasn't happened in a long time.

I'm not positive it's the same issue or not. I helped my mom move from Verizon to prepaid at&t (straight talk). Purchased a brand new captivate glide. If the phone is upright (portrait) & I open the messaging app or settings/anything... the phone will go into landscape, no reason at all. Takes a lot to have it rotate back to portrait & when it finally does, it spazzes out & rotates back into landscape, again for no apparent reason. It's stock, not rooted, on 2.3.6.
I've had a lot of android phones & none have ever done this. Again, any help/insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Slow screen rotation..

Hey guys, on my nexus when im typing anything I turn it to landscape mode for the bigger keyboard and sometimes it takes ages for the screen to follow - sometimes it doesn't do it at all. Anyone else have this prob?
It is slow on purpose.

So that if you are in bed and turn sideways it doesn't just keep switching, and other similar situations.
No guys, I mean REALLY slow, as in 5-10 seconds. Sometimes I have to keep movin it around untill it turns. Today however its really playing up and not turning at all.. haha

I find that actually it's the exact opposite.
When I want it to rotate, I need to wait ages (sometimes tapping the screen while waiting makes it faster).
When I lie in bed, it very often rotates when I don't want it to, and then I wait ages for it to switch back to the previous mode.
That pretty much forces me to disable automatic rotation every time I am in the bed. Whatever they tried to achieve with this, either they failed completely or I am somehow mysteriously missing the point..

Mine has been staying, and being used to the HTC Desire spinning instantly it was a bit strange at first. As regards to the tapping, there are some modes where tapping is what rotates it and it wont until you do.
Same damn concern very annoying

I mean in applications like the stock Browser. I'm not 100% sure, but 99% that it rotates faster if I tap the screen as compared to just waiting.

it's not slow
it's the smooth transition animation (like windows IE)
you will need some 3rd party tweak to disable it

OP is talking about the screen taking awhile to finally rotate when he tilts the phone. He isn't talking about the phone not tilting at all.

Auto Rotate Broken.......

Just recently, my Auto Rotate function broke.
I noticed it failing intermittently over the last couple of weeks, but didn't think anything of it, as I thought it was a setting issue.
But then the other day it failed completely.
The camera is stuck in Landscape mode, but the rest of the phone functions in Portrait mode.
I can't change either.
When I started trouble shooting a couple of days ago, I did the following:
- Power cycled the S3. Didn't fix the issue.
- recalibrated Gyro sensor. Still broken.
- Pulled battery for 30 seconds, reinstalled and rebooted phone. Auto Rotate was still broken. I repeated the process, and auto rotate started working again. But only for a couple of minutes, then it broken again.
- Repeated the above process, worked and then broke again.
- I reset my S3 to Factory Default, but Auto Rotate is still broken.
- Auto Rotate completely broken at this point.
I called Sprint, created an eticket, and went to the Sprint store. They checked it out, and verified that Auto Rotate is broken. They are ordering me a replacement S3 Pebble Blue, 32GB device. Hopefully I'll get a new device, and not a refurbed.
I don't know why Auto Rotate broke, but I hope it is not a widespread issue, as I'd hate for it to keep breaking.
Auto Rotate used to be a simple function, but Samsung added a few options to the Auto rotate feature, maybe complicated the way it works, which is prone more to breaking the feature. I don't know.
I just noticed that my Screen Off while on a call is not working. I checked the appropriate setting.
I'm unsure when exactly that function broke, and I don't think it's related to the Auto rotate function, as it's a different sensor.
I used to be able to cover the sensor with my hand, and the screen would shut off, but not anymore.
Anyway, if anyone else is having the above issue(s), it may not be a setting issue, but a hardware failure.
Maybe you turned auto rotate off?

That was one of the first things I made sure of.
Are you running a custom launcher like apex or holo? If so, the launcher settings will override your phone settings. If you have a custom launcher, make sure that auto rotate is enabled in both the launcher and system settings.

As I mentioned, I reset the S3 to Factory Default, and still have the issues.
The Auto Rotate is still broken, as is the Screen Off sensor during calls.
I am running ADW Launcher Ex, but the above doesn't work with either the stock or ADW Launcher.
As for the proximity sensor, make sure that you don't have any apps that use the sensor as a function such as "wave control".

No apps, as my apps are at a minimum since I'm swapping out phones Tuesday.
I didn't even bother to Root this S3 again.
Sounds to me like you just got a defective device. Hopefully the replacement will be good! I have not heard of many problems with this phone at all so I am sure you will be good to go with the next one.
wow! i'm having the exact same issue, guess i'll unroot and swap it... thanks for the post (a year later )

Photos show rotated when taken as portrait

Hello all,
So I've searched for this issue before, and while I've found others that have the same problem, nobody seems to have found a solution.
The issue is that when I take a picture in portrait mode, and then either try to MMS or send to my PC, the photos end up rotated on their side. I noticed that when I open my camera, it looks like my phone is rotating to landscape. I have tried resetting auto screen rotation, but no luck. Anyone have any idea about a solution to this? My wife's S3 does the same thing so others MUST have the same problem, I'd assume. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Just take photos in landscape. They come out looking normal. It's a known bug. I don't think there's a setting to change it.
Since i rooted and flashed new kernel and rom never happened again

this happens when i have Auto Rotate function turn off. I just turn it back on and everything is back to normal.
I didn't know that about auto rotate.
How many articles have been written about the pitfalls of taking pictures in portrait? Just don't do it

Screen Rotation bug?

Hey there, just want to consult something to you guys. For the past few days I am experiencing a bug in screen rotation. Seems like the phone cannot detect the accelerometer and it doesn't rotate the screen/app accordingly. I also tried Rotation Locker set to auto but it only rotates when I lock/unlock the phone. Apparently the issue can be fixed by restarting the phone but it goes back again. BTW, phone is stock unrooted MB2. I experienced this after MB2. Anyone having the same symptoms?

Disable smart rotation.
Search this forum. I saw this problem long back

Also started experiencing this rotation bug with DMB2. I thought it was just because I was pushing the system to the edge.
The "smart rotation" comment above does not work. Only a restart does the trick.
This is so annoying. First, the battery issues. Now this?! Come on, Samsung. Don't kill my love for the Note 2 with your stupid updates.
Mine does the same and I have exhanged one unit because of it and still happens its weird wished samsung would fix it. Only seems to happen when I watch a video for long period of times. Dont have smart rotation enabled either its a strange one.

Since 4.1.2 strange rotation issue

Since I've upgraded my btu note 2 to 4.1.2 I've had really weird issues with my screen where it will go to landscape on some apps and it refuses to rotate to portrait
The play store sites it and xda sometimes . Plus in the gallery some pics refuse to rotate
Has anyone else had the issue ?
My screen rotate is switched to on
I've wiped the handset on update
Thanks

It happens the same to me, a lot with the videos of youtube
Glad its not just me thought my phone was faulty .. Any solutions ? Don't fancy wiping my phone again
Wonder if the dbt new update of 4.1.2 will sort the issue ?

There was a thread about this with a solution. Just search rotation.

Since updating my samsung galaxy note 2 to 4.1.2(N7100XXDMC3) my screen rotation is acting crazy..when I switch on the auto rotation it doesn't rotate no matter how hard you try to do it(even with smart rotation on/off)..then suddenly after some time it rotates to clockwise side and it stays in that position forever on that side it won't rotate any other side even portrait mode until I turn the auto rotation off..I'm annoyed by this problem even rotation in youtube fails..I have heard from forums that muti window causes this problem.. but a restart fixes it but just temporarily..does anyone have this kind of issue?..please please fix this samsung even with a small update..we cant wait to long for 4.2.2(don't know even if they will fix this problem in 4.2.2)
