Decks Reloaded - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK so today my wifi went out.... Just completely went out. I tried wiping the settings and reconnecting to the Wifi point and all it does is try and authenticate, then it drops. So with a few prior bugs like this in the past, I decided to do a combo Temp Files wipe with 4.3 Smelkus MOD recovery.
EVERYTHING GOT WIPED; Go launcher is non existent, Play Store is gone, apps just magically vanished. Going into App Settings, the Symlinks are there, but the app is missing from drawer. Even all the aroma options I turned on are gone. It's basic android with no gapps. This happened to me on first install and I had to wipe my memory card and reformat. I refuse to do this again. So I am going to try and nandroid back to before the wipe.
What caused this?

In my excitement, and retardedness, I forgot to nandroid after a successful install. So it likes like I have no other choice to set EVERYTHING back up again. I'm just thankful I'm smart enough to have recurring TB backups every other day. D

[Q] Weird spontaneous bootlooping?

I searched the forum for something similar to no avail, so if I missed it, I apologize. So I had been running CM 6 stable for a month and everything was great. Hadn't upgraded kernels, or any other modifications. Turned my phone off for the night last night, and when it came back on, stuck in bootloop for no good reason why. So, oh well, I'll just flash a new ROM, no big deal, then tried CM7RC, it boots, I use titanium backup to restore everything, it all works well, until I reboot the phone again, and bam, right back to bootloop, but this time with CM7. I'm completely out of ideas, any help would be appreciated. I've wiped davlik, cache, did factory reset, everything I can think of.
Thanks ahead of time.
Try fixing permissions in recovery, if that fails then try wiping ALL data and installing CM again. If that doesn't work, try a Sense ROM, it might be an AOSP problem
so here's an update to my problem so far. What I had left out earlier was that I could install a new ROM, and I could reboot my phone and it would work fine. Not until I used Titanium Backup and restored all of my apps and settings did I run into a problem. With that said, I did as PGleo86 said. This time, it worked just as it had before. Phone was fine, until I restored data. So I thought about what I had installed last. So the last time I wiped everything and installed CM7, I used Titanium Backup, but this time I omitted a few programs and settings, namely, Amazon App Store and Angry Birds Rio. This time when I rebooted, it worked fine. So I am slowly going to restore the settings, apps, and data I omitted one at a time and reboot my phone to see if any of them put me into boot loop. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Particularly with Amazon App Store or Angry Birds Rio? (I did recently upgrade my version of Swype as well)

From what I understand, its restoring the data that is killin it. You can restore all the apps you like, but when you start restoring data, it seriously screws with alot of roms. You will keep having the issue as long as your restoring data. Good luck dude
This may take a while but try reloading a few apps at a time to see which on in particular is causing the issue. I saw a post like this somewhere on this massive forum, but the person found out it was one app that was killing the boot process.
Different roms store data in different places. So titanium is writing data to somewhere it shouldn't be.

[Q] Backed up my ROM -- now everything FCs

I've been running ACS 1.2 Frozen for a while, with the Genocide kernel and LauncherPro. I've been planning to update to an EI22 ROM for a while, but before I started messing around I wanted to backup what I have now.
So I powered down, booted up into CWM (purple), and did a backup. Then when I restarted, all I got were FCs. The really aggravating thing is that LauncherPro FCs so I can't really get to anything else.
All I did was run a backup! Anyone else seen this? Got any ideas on how to get stability back?
Luckily the backup ran successfully, but if this is what I get just from RUNNING a backup, I don't have a lot of confidence that I'd be stable after RESTORING a backup.
Something happened, may have been related to journaling and the shut down. Did you have journaling enabled? You can do a factory data reset to clear the errors and try an advanced data restore from the nand but if the errors happened before the backup started then it is corrupted too. Do you have any other backups? Titanium? If you clear the errors enough to get into settings, clear data in your launcher and Google Service Framework, then any other app that is FCing.
I did have journaling enabled, yes. I wasn't getting any errors before the backup, but if the shutdown caused them, well I'm a bit stuck. No recent Titanium backups unfortunately.
Thanks for the things to try!

At that point you got nothing to lose. If the restore has the FCs too then Factory Data reset will nuke the data errors, you will lose 3rd party apps, have to set up email again, and your contacts (stored on Google) will be restored as well as the list of apps downloaded from the market (eventually the list will be populated). But your phone will be usable again.
In case you havent tried it, wipe cache and dalvic from CWM. I would try that before wiping everything.

So this is interesting -- it seems like something about my SD card has gotten busted in the backup.
I did a restore of the backup I made, it's identical to where I was at after the backup, but when I hit Home it asked me to choose LauncherPro or TWLauncher. Choosing TWLauncher at least gets me some functionality.
So I did that and noticed that NONE of the apps on my SD card show up anymore. A clue towards resolution without full wipe?
Yup, after more investigation I'm sure of it. Running the CWM backup broke all the apps stored on my SD card. I didn't make any changes other than running the backup, and after restarting all those apps no longer show up.
Backup your sd card on a computer, format it in the phone and restore. That should make it work again. Then you will have to reinstall the apps that were there. Sometimes launchers take more than 5 minutes to reload apps on the sd card. Did you wait long enough?

Severely handicapped my OS

Hello,
I should mention I'm running the dark_hd CM9 rom, rooted S-OFF.
So earlier today I was in the bootloader and accidently hit Clear Storage. It brought up a black screen with an image of an open box and then my phone rebooted normally.. fat fingered it somehow. Oops.
Upon loading the OS it immediately asked me for my Google info and I knew something was wrong. All of my apps icons are there on the launcher screen, however none of them are installed except for the basic apps. Also, when I tried to install Titatium Backup again, it says 'Unfortunately, .. has stopped'. I tried to reinstall a few more apps and each one says 'Unfortunately...has stopped". Before I restored, I wanted to see if I could get back some of my data and make a fresh Titanium backup of it all.
I have a few apps like a a logbook program and my Heytell conversations that I would like to see if the data is still there before I do a full restore or a wipe. Is there any way I can fix this "Unfortunately" error? Also, if I do a restore, will my app data be saved or will it revert back to the info that was there when I did the backup? Thanks.

So you hit factory reset from the hboot menu? You could check /data/data and see if the settings for your apps are still there, but i doubt it. You should also check /data/app and see if the apps apk is still there. If it is there, delete it and then try reinstalling it again. If you do a backup, it will restore the data that was backed up. You can do an advanced restore and restore everything except data.

Did you have any apps moved to sdcard? As it almost sounds like that could be the case if some of the data for the phone like the launcher homescreen data is still intact but the apps were on the sdcard which would be part of storage.

I'm sorry it was CM9. Fixed. I had CM10 on the brain as I was getting read to flash the Pons CM10 ROM. I didn't have any luck recovering any of the data so I just wiped it and flashed a new rom. I was able to run Titanium and recovery the data but I still lost some since my last backup. Thanks anyways.

Install "button" doesn't work

Update The likely culprit appears to be an app called Velis Auto Brightness. A little over three weeks after this problem first arose, I switched my ROM to Dandroid. In deciding what apps gradually to add back, I ran across comments like the following for Velis:
Cannot press install from an APK Found a bug that needs fixing. With this app enabled for some reason installing from an APK it renders the Install button useless but the cancel button still works. As soon as I disabled this App, the Install button worked again.

Nice, but one slight issue I really like this app. Very useful and easy to use. My only issue is that when the app is active, if I turn off system auto brightness and try to raise the brightness, Velis overrides this and forces auto brightness.

Since yesterday, I cannot install apps, neither from the Play Store, Amazon, nor side-loading. The install process begins, but when I get to the screen that offers a choice between "Cancel" and "Install" pressing "Install" does nothing. I can, however, cancel out.
Thinking that installing a trial version of Cerberus may have caused the problem, I first disabled then uninstalled it. Neither solved the problem. I then disabled XPrivacy, also without success. (I restarted the phone each time before trying.)
Yes, "Unknown sources" is checked.
Any thoughts?
TIA.
Are you rooted?
Rom/kernel?
How much space do you have left? Anything else ypu may have done prior to installing Cerberus?

Doc, thanks for your interest. Here are the answers to your questions.
Rooted.
Stockorama version 2 (no change in the last month or more)
T99UVDMD5 (no change in the last month or more)
3.031-112078 [email protected] #2 SMP PREEMPT Mon Apr 15 11:59:10 KST 2013 (no change in the last month or more)
12.85GB available (32GB model) If it matters, I also have an external 64GB SanDisk sdcard that sporadically cannot be read. Rebooting generally again makes it available. Although I live with this, I'd appreciate any thoughts on this as well. But the no-install problem is more pressing.
Regarding the installation of Cerberus, to be more accurate I opened, configured, and ran it yesterday for the first time. According to my AppBrain timeline, I installed it on June 7th.
Try this,
Uncheck unknown sources, reboot, recheck and try installing something.
If it doesn't help, shut down, remove the sdcard, power on and try again.
If this doesn't help, use Titanium backup or a similar app and backup any important apps and data (contacts, sms, etc)(also I find it good to export contacts to sd from the contacts app itself), then boot into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
Next reflash your rom, wiping cache and dalvik (not factory reset). Reboot and try it out. If its still a problem, factory reset, then try again. If this solves it then start restoring your backed up apps. (Start only with the ones you really need your data restored on, the rest I'd suggest reinstalling clean).
I vaguely recall looking into Cerberus a month or so ago and I don't think it had been recently updated for JB. (I could be remembering wrong though) Before reinstalling it, and providing everything is working, make a new nandroid backup, then you can try it again with an easy, recent restore point.
As for your sdcard, what is it formatted as? Fat32, exFat? You may need to back it up and reformat it. I'd try exFat first since you're using a TW rom. If you plan on flashing CM/AOSP based roms, format as fat32. First try formatting using the phone. If you still have issues, format again on a computer.

After removing the sdcard, I was able to install in the following circumstances:
--online via computer from the Play Store (no need to press "install" on my SGS3).
--online from my phone from the Play Store (two different apps, chosen simply as a test, installed without my being asked to press "install").
But I still am stuck when trying to install apps from Dropbox or my download folder.
Trying to install from Amazon via my phone brings up the Cancel/Install choice, and pressing "Install" does noting.
I also disabled Floating Notifications, but that had no effect.
I have a nandroid backup from June 27th. Before reflashing Stockorama and adding back apps, would you suggest restoring that backup? If so, do you have any other suggestion before restoring the nandroid backup?
Thanks again for your continuing interest.
In recovery try wiping cache and dalvik. Not factory resetting. Then if that doesn't do it, reflash the rom.
I'd make a new nandroid beforehand so you don't have to worry about mistakes and loss of data. And of course make another once its working again.
If you use the old one, you'll lose any data you've gathered since then. If you are ok with this then go ahead. I'd try my above suggestions first though.

Success, eventually.
Wiping cache and dalvik didn't work. But restoring my June 27th nandroid backup did. I'm now in the process, with the assistance of my AppBrain timeline, of reinstalling apps from my Titanium backup and deleting others. (Just to be safe, I'm deleting Cerberus without having activated it on this flashing.)
A question, if you will. Were your suggestions just general troubleshooting? Or, did you--do you--have some idea what caused my problem?
Many thanks for your help.
Mostly troibleshooting. Sounded like some data was corrupted or was just in general conflict with the system. First time I had ever seen this particular problem. Glad you got it working! Make a newer nandroid once youre set back up, then you can try Cerberus again just to be sure it caused the problem. If you choose of course.

[Q] acore process stopped after flash

Hi guys. I flashed a new rom this morning. I went from a 4.3 to a 4.3 rom, so no problems right? I checked the checksums, and the rom was fine. Everything went well and I started my titanium backups. It froze. It rebooted and then I kept getting android.process.acore has stopped. it comes up immediately after I hit ok and doesn't let me do anything. So I went back to my backup. Same thing happens here. I wiped, it, installed new roms, Everything I do gives me this. Factory reset, new rom flash, ect.
The google answer seems to be clear the data out of the contacts in app manager, but I can't even get there.
any insight would be appreciated.
thanks.
Well, I can enter 1 keystroke between error messages. I went through the initial setup 1 keystroke at a time. When it was finished logging into google, it just started over again with the samsung account.
Sounds like leftover data causing your issues. Follow these instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50335424. You will also want to delete two folders from your external sdcard android and data if they exist. Now that your phone is totally clean you should have no more problems.

Thanks,. I have started down that road. I'm not sure if the sd card is the culprit, as I tried it without it as well.
