Auto Sync Curiosity - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I've been wondering, does auto sync significantly drain the battery? I just realized there was an auto sync toggle and it's been on the whole time.
Shouldn't be bad to leave it on or is it a good idea to leave it off?
Opinions?

Well, yes, of course it does. When on, your phone is going to poll for email, etc. every X minutes. When off, it's not going to make those connections, thus saving some battery.
Turn it off an you're not going to automatically get emails, etc.

Need app to disable APN/save battery

I really like the idea of disabling the phone's APNs when it's just sitting idle to save battery. Unfortunately I've not found an app that can do this reliably.
I first tried Juice Defender/Ultimate Juice which is so configurable that I thought I'd hit a winner. It's (supposed) ability to automatically enable the APN for a short period every so often seemed like the perfect balance of powersaving/data syncing.
Unfortunately it didn't work out this way and messed up my APNs and internet access completely, even after uninstalling (until after a few reboots).
I tried Sleepy Battery just today. Again, the app didn't work as promised - it didn't re-enable the APN after the phone woke up, leaving me with no internet. Again, this app had made a change to my APN that I had to go back in and correct, after I had uninstalled it.
Has anyone got any advice, or can recommend an app that actually works for this use?
I personally use use APNdroid, it allows to switch 3g on and off and has a widget with it. It doesn't automatically turn the 3g on or off depending on your use, that's something you'd have to do yourself...
Hope that helps!
Try sleepy battery, juice defender, or another app I think it's called sweet dreams.

Thats really strange, I've had great results from JuiceDefender/UltimateJuice. It turns APNs off when in standby and turns them on for 15 seconds every 5mins to allow everything to sync. Really can't fault it.
I'd maybe suggest giving it another go? I believe there's an update coming soon from the developer to sort out some issues with the Desire. This might solve your issue.
Not come across any other app's that do what JuiceDefender does as well as it does.

I really wanted to like Juice Defender. Hopefully the update will help, so I'll wait a while for that.
In the meantime I'll give APNDroid and Sweet Dreams a try. Thanks guys
I would recommend getting the juicedefender and ultimatejuice is well worth the purchase! juiceplotter is also a great free add on. They will save you on battery and will automatically control your apn and wifi.
Just a quick question on JuiceDefender actually. I just bought UltimateJuice to try, love all the options it gives you. But, my question is this...
I have my apps (Facebook and the likes) set to sync once every 2 hours. I also have UltimateJuice set up to turn APN on once every 2 hours to allow syncing. Will these two points in time automatically sync up with each other? I can just see Facebook trying to update at 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 etc while UltimateJuice turns APN on at 15:00, 17:00, 19:00 etc.
Hopefully not though. Anybody know? Thanks.

I have wondered this, I if you've only got APN turning on every 2 hours you might as well set Facebook to sync every 2-3minutes because, my guess is that it won't attempt to sync if there is no data connection.
Hmm, possibly. I've set Juice to turn data on once an hour. I'll leave it like that for tomorrow and see how it goes. It currently claims to be extending my batter life by 1.88x, and if that remains consistent and it actually can do that then I'll be very impressed.
I've now tried APNDroid and I have to admit it seems like it does save some juice. But I forget to turn it off/enable my APNs frequently, and therefore don't get my data coming through for long periods. I need an automatic app.
Sweets Dreams does not fit the usage I want the app for.
So have gone back and tried Juice Defender again for today, and it seems to be working ok this time round. However it reports that it's multiplied my battery life by 1.95, but that is a complete load of rubbish. My phone was unplugged literally 12hrs ago, and I'm now down to 14% battery.
My use of the phone isn't excessive - searched the Market for maybe 5-10min, installed 3 apps, and uninstalled about 4 apps. Browsed internet for maybe 15min total. Sent and received 12 text messages each way. A few emails have come in that I've dealt with. No gaming action at all, no calls, wifi is completely disabled, I had just a couple of widgets updating infrequently (every few hrs) but I got rid of them early this evening.
What do I have to do to get some sort of half-decent battery life out of this thing?
sometimes u want to have data syncs when the phone sleeps, for example twitter if you have new mentions. I used quick settings (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.bwx.bequick)
long press on the search button brings this up so you can change it quick.
You could change the sync frequencies to longer gap inbetween updates to improve battery life. I turn on my APN the entire day and I still get about avg 14hrs of usage
I use Data on Demand from the market. It's simples! Just turns data off when the phone is asleep. Doubles the battery life!

I like it! simples indeed!
I use juice defender/ultimate. It works incredibly well and I can now easily get 2 days use. I have a rooted Desire with MCRr3.
Without this software I stuggled to get 1 day.
After my first couple of days with UltimateJuice I must say I'm pretty impressed. Syncing seems to work fine with the schedule I have set up. I have it turning APS off at night, having it on when I have the screen turned on, and off when the screen is off and then turning back on to sync everything once an hour. Greatly improved battery life so far.

Battery Life

I have a widget that shows me how much I have left and when I unplug it after a full charge, I have 6 hours left.
Ridiculous.
This is on auto brightness, wifi, twitter/facebook/mail updating every 15 minutes.
whenever I take my phone out the house I have to bring a charger...
bloody ridiculous.
couple of points.
1) When you leave the house, don't leave your wi-fi on! I find wi-fi to be the biggest battery drain out of everything ( expect gps)
2) I use a brightness widget, therefore when your in doors you can have it on low, then when your out doors have it on high, i assume this will use less battery then auto brightness
3) why do you need facebook updating every 15 minutes?? Do you honestly look at your phone that much when your out? change the settings so it updates every 15 when your on wi-fi at home, and every hour for when your not.
Wifi isn't an issue. I leave it on 24/7 as well as bluetooth and still can get 36 hours out od a charge. Its hooked up to wifi 20hrs a day as well.

1. Battery and other constantly updating widgets are one of the causes for battery drain. Get rid of it.
2. Battery widgets try to get an estimate of your typical use. They are mostly wrong in my opinion
3. I can get 6 hours of battery, yes, but only if glue the phone to my hand and use it constantly for that time
4. there are tons of battery threads around, use those suggestions (mid brightness, no live wallpaper, turn airplane on when you know coverage will be unavailable for long, etc)
5. Battery gets better in 10 days.
6. Most people can get at the very least one day of heavy usage. If you really need to hammer the battery get a spare one, they are cheap. Oh, and realize you are lucky because you CAN have a spare battery !
7. If you are using an automatic task killer, get rid of it.

1) go to the market and search brightness level, or brightness widget, there are a number of these. The best i find is brightness level by curvefish, it lets you pick a percentage and keep at that .
2) Cant remeber actually where the settings are but there is a way. But i prefer to use another widget, autosync on/off, this allows you to update every 15 when on wi-fi, but when you want to save battery, turn auto sync off and it doesnt sync ,
I suggest you use switchpro widget. its like the power control widget but with more options to turn on/off things.
I typically charged my Nokia N97 every other day or so, even though I used it frequently, and needless to say the HTC Desire doesn't have the same stamina. I was quite frustrated by it, and I started thinking of ways to save power. I came up with 19 tips, and I have actually noticed quite a difference by following them

Nice post thanks.ill give this a go. But I have a question to do with the positioning using data or gps. I believe your stating that you should turn data off for this purpose, and let the gps do it? however my phone was set to opposite. when I changed as you were suggesting and I clicked allow gps, I had a message come up saying to turn off to conserve battery? But your saying to turn on? And have data off? Also how do you get into htc facebook settings,i cant even find it!

yep i also use this widget
also use a free juice defender or paid ultimate juice that keeps turning on and off your 3g every now and then depending on how you schedule it, my phone with snowstorm weather widget updating every 80 minutes + 30s of 3g every 5 minutes to update mail etc and average usage lasts about 36 hours which is good enough for me
I leave my WI-FI on at home and suffer hardly any drain.
At work like today leave my Mobile network on down to 47% with just twitter usage!
Pathetic is the mobile signals drain.

Ok, ive had another read of this and am now just even more confused! Are you saying to have gps turned off via settings and location aswell as data, or just having gps on? Are you saying that having gps selected via settings for the purpose of locating services uses les batty than via using data? Either way, it appeatss that the power control widget controls the gps the same as via settings. Right now ive deselected gps and the data location.

I believe this is what I'm saying:
"To let your device learn your location via wireless network triangulation requires less battery than by using the GPS for this purpose. However, using both methods simultaneously is probably not a good idea from a battery point of view. The GPS can handle this task by itself, although it will get a fix on your location a little bit slower. Also, wireless network positioning will be used to collect anonymous Google location data, which will drain the battery further. You can change this option from Settings > Location > Use wireless networks. "
In other words, to only use wireless network positioning will supposedly use less battery than by only using the GPS, but using both methods will naturally use the most juice
For me...
- Turn GPS On when I needed.
- Turn WiFi On when I needed
- Turn Bluetooth On when I needed
- Use 2G Network for standard internet, we use 3G if we want more speed such us watch video

I can get get good days heavy usage (except games) from mine, I haven't tried the 2G thing yet.
Apparently it is the connectivity thing that kills the battery, but turning off 3G, doesn't that take all the fun out of it???
If you just use it as a phone then I reckon you can get a couple of days out of it, or so I've read...

Please: What is keeping my phone awake

There is no reason for my phone to be awake this much overnight PLUS none of the apps in Battery History show awake time. This is the reason I lost 6% in 5 hours when I probably would have lost 3. How do I find out what is keeping my phone awake? I have wiped and tried different ROMs.
How often are your accounts syncing? Turn off facebook notifications... it's set to check every hour by default and it can be a killer. Also any Twitter app that could be updating every 15/30m depending on the setting. Those are places tostart looking first
Using BetterBatteryStats, the culprit is McAfee Mobile Security which is very weird. I e-mailed their support.

Oh thanks. I hadn't disabled that yet! That should help quite a bit. My phone has been getting good battery life, but it has been staying awake a lot more than I think it should (and thus staying hotter than I'd like).

Battery drain in sleep..

So I already made a thread about this a bit ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025669 but this is a bit different see I get good battery life on screen (4 hours max). But I'm getting some **** ass batterywhen tthe phone is in sleep I kept the phone in airplane mode from 6 am to 12 pm from 100 it became 96.. I tried roms.. Kernels nothing fixed it. Maybe there's a bad app but I use better battery stats and really there's nothing 'bad'. But damn it.. I can post some screen shots about better battery stats results later I hope I get a reply.. This really does indeed ducks. People get a drain from 100 to 96 when they have everything turned on I had everything off!
4% battery loss over 18 hours is a commendable feat! Anyways, do you use a leather case, or keep the phone in a jeans pocket all the time? The higher temperature can be the cause. Though in my opinion, it's not a battery strain you should be worried about

Guys can it be from Auto Sync? I just wiped off the whole phone(backedup ofc) and i didnt install any apps or whatever which means no syncing and im getting awesome battery..is it because of Auto sync my battery drains quick?now heres why i think its auto sync rather then anything else.Keep in mind i have ALOT of stuff syncing..
1 twitter
1 Facebook
2 Gmail
3 hotmail
Whatsapp
HP Printer connected
1 Samsung account
Now i want to know..if i disable auto sync for lets say Whats App. I wont be able to recieve any messages unless i open up the app? Will i get facebook notifications?Twitter mentions?Email notifications?

If you turn off AutoSync, it's not going to sync and you're not going to get Pull notifications, but Push notifications should still work. Apps like Gmail use Push notifications, so the server tells the phone there's new email, instead of the phone waking up to ask the server. It depends on the app if it has Push notifications in it. I know G+, Gmail and Facebook do for example.
However, whether it's Push or Pull notifications, they still wake your phone up when they happen. So you're going to have wakelocks either way. With Pull, it's going to happen every time the AutoSync fires off. With Push, it will happen every time a notification comes in.
You can set up apps like Tasker and JuiceDefender to periodically turn on the radio and check for messages, then turn everything off again. That will help a lot.
Personally, as long as I get a full 18 hour+ day I don't limit the radios. I charge mine every night so I don't need to get 3 days of life out of it. Seems pointless to buy a smart phone, then disable everything about it that makes it a smart phone just to get 72 hours of battery. I can always use airplane mode if I'm not going to be near a charger for more than a few days.
Try Air Push Detector to check which app is waking up.

Phone often awakes causing battery to drain? +max brightness in camera

Hello, I've bought HTC 10 last wednesday and something is not ok with my phone. Looking at battery stats I see that my phone often wakes up. I tried to localize the source of wakelocks but without root it seems to be impossible. I have no location turned on, the signal is weak because of my workplace but it is not the answer as the wakelocks appear also when Im home. I have disabled some apps, i factory reseted the phone after installing updates. I have autosync though but i unticked most syncs and sync only important services like gmail. Have anyone experienced this situation?
And another question- is there a way to disable maximun brightness whenever using the camera?

it looks like you suffer from wifi drain bug on htc 10.
(GSam shows a 6.5%/hr battery drain)
I would turn off wifi when not in use, or turn off wifi scanning if you have that on.
As to the other wakelocks I am not the best for this, hopefully others chime in. :good:
"is there a way to disable maximun brightness whenever using the camera?"
A: The only ROM I have seen this on is Venom. I am not sure if there is an app that will do this as I haven't looked, sorry.
